"Captain, do you think that Nyota and I are compatible?"
"I don't think I'm the best one to answer that Spock," he answered honestly. The Vulcan's eyebrows rose, and Jim sighed. "I haven't dated in quite a while, and even then, never seriously."
"There is a human idiom about one outside of a situation seeing it better, is there not?"
"Yes," Jim conceded. "And while it's true, there is another that is equally true; no one knows what goes on behind closed doors."
"I do not understand Captain."
Jim sighed, expression pensive. "We only know what others let us see," he began. "So while it's true that someone outside of a situation would be able to analyse it better than those within it, they can only make that analysis based upon what they perceive of the people in question. It might be that a couple they perceive to be perfect for each other on the surface, don't suit beneath the surface, or vice versa."
"I understand," Spock replied solemnly. "Which do you perceive Nyota and I to be?"
"I refuse to answer that." Spock blinked. "I perceive that you're about to make a decision Spock, and I don't want my opinion to sway you one way or the other." The brunet's eyebrows quirked. "Because if you don't like the results of said choice, you'll be mad at me," he retorted with a grin. His expression turned solemn. "But, if you want to talk it out, I'm happy to listen."
