Couldn't Agree More

HPD Ballistics Range

"Clear!" Steve called as he touched two fingers to the neck of the body at his feet. There was no pulse - which was not a surprise since the single shot to the head had been dead center.

"Clear in here!" Danny reiterated to Lou's SWAT team and HPD officers who immediately entered the range.

"Nice shot," Grover nodded to Catherine, who'd passed her weapon over so it could be bagged and checked.

"Thanks. It's been a minute," she said, even as she wrapped an arm around Steve's waist in a short hug.

"Just like riding a bike, " Danny quipped, but his relieved smile had her grinning in return. "Go. Both of you. I got this." He waved a hand around the HPD range.

"You good, Lieutenant?" The ballistics instructor asked.

"I'm fine. Thanks." She looked up at Steve. "Ready to go?"

"More than ready." He nodded his thanks to his partner and, tightening his arm around his wife in an embrace as they walked towards the doors, kissed her temple and let out a breath.

"... and this is Brooke Bloom, Hawaii News Now with a breaking story out of HPD where an apparently crazed gunman impersonating an HPD official entered the ballistics range and turned a weapon on the three people in the area. The governor's office has confirmed Commander Steve McGarrett and Lieutenant Catheirne Rollins were on site and the threat was neutralized. Details to follow as they become available. We now return you to our regularly scheduled program."

Elizabeth heard the special report preamble from the kitchen and stepped into the living room just as her phone dinged a text from Catherine.

"Mommy and Daddy are okay," DJ announced to his grandmother as he indicated his new watch. "Grace just called from her work - they got a bad guy and Mommy helped. They're on the way home but she said it may be on TV."

Elizabeth gathered him into a hug and kissed his hair. "Thank you, sweetheart. Your mommy just texted me." Her expression brightened with relief. "How do you feel about making some cookies to take home?"

"Yeah, we can have them for dessert tonight. Can we make snickerdoodles? Mommy loves those and Daddy and Angie will eat anything."

One hour earlier

"Give me that ammo!" The man with the now obviously stolen HPD badge waved his gun at the instructor and tossed him a duffel.

"Hey, hey, hey, look at me," Steve said from his position across from the man who was in his mid thirties.

He'd chosen the range area between Steve and Catheirne, who was there keeping current and when he'd realized who was addressing him, his eyes grew more wild. "You shut up! I'll kill you right now!" He lifted the weapon level with Steve's head.

"You don't wanna do that."

"I said shut up. I need ammo. I want to get out of here and I'll kill you right now."

As Catherine stepped to her right, she quietly lifted her own weapon. When the man began to devolve and she saw him steady the gun and begin to tighten up on the trigger, she widened her stance and fired. Once.

He'd crumpled to the floor midway through a sentence and Steve stepped forward, kicked the weapon away and knelt to confirm what they already knew.

Less than a minute later, Danny, Lou, as well as SWAT and HPD entered and they were processed and heading home.

Just as Steve and Catherine entered the truck, the phone rang.

"Gracie," he answered, seeing her ID. "We're all fine. Danno's wrapping up paperwork."

"Thanks, Uncle Steve. I just saw it on the HPD newsfeed on my phone and turned on the TV. It's on KGMB, everyone's gonna pick it up. I talked to Danno and I just wanted to tell you I called DJ in case he sees the news."

"Thank you, sweetheart," Catherine said. "I texted Mom and he's fine and Angie's in the pool with Dad so she didn't see anything."

"Oh good."

Steve could picture his niece's relieved expression as she said, "I always hated when a case made the news and Danno was on scene… and couldn't call me. I figured in case you guys couldn't call the kids…"

"You're the best, Gracie."

"Love you both."

"Love you," they echoed before ending the call.

Present

They'd entered the house and greeted Cammie, who clearly smelled remnants of blood and death. She gave them each a little extra attention before going back to lie down on her bolster bed next to a dozing Pumpkin.

Steve stopped, one hand on the railing, then turned to face his wife. "Thanks, Cath. If that kind of situation comes up, I know you can absolutely handle it, and you saved my ass today, but I'm glad we aren't in the field together right now because …" he trailed off, knowing she understood. His first thought when the shooter had leveled the gun at him with Catherine ten feet away was the kids. The decision they'd made before Angie was on the way where they wouldn't risk being KIA together was reinforced a thousand fold.

"I know." She leaned up and placed a hand on his face. "Go shower." She nodded to the stairs. He'd cleaned up at HQ but had been splattered with blood and worse.

He smiled. "How about you join me, then we'll pick the kids up a little early and order pizza."

Grinning, she patted his but and passed him on the steps. "That can definitely be arranged, it's my night and I definitely don't feel like cooking. C'mon, Commander, time's wasting."

Catherine picked up the remote as Angie hopped up onto the sofa.

Instead of sitting next to her, the five year old climbed into her lap and snuggled into a hug.

"What a good hug, thank you, baby girl."

"Love you, Mommy," she said before sliding onto the seat and leaning against Catherine, who smiled at her daughter's inherent ability to pick up on the tone of things she was far too little to comprehend. She'd given both parents extra hugs the moment she'd seen them. "Love you, sweetheart."

"Hey, are you ready for movie night?" Steve entered with DJ. They were carrying a bowl of popcorn and four waters.

"Very very ready," Angie said.

"Then let's do this." Steve smiled when Angie clapped.

"Mommy helped you get a bad guy after having a meeting all morning so she should pick the movie," DJ suggested.

"You needed Mommy to help?"

"I did. She was her usual incredible self and everyone was safe."

Catherine returned Steve's soft smile when he leaned across the kids and kissed her temple.

"Mommy's a great helper. You caught a bad guy?" Angie confirmed, swiveling to see her mother's face.

"She used to get bad guys all the time," DJ reminded his sister as they bumped hands reaching for popcorn at the same time, causing her to giggle.

"Good job, Mommy," she grinned, completely unaware of what getting a bad guy often meant for her parents. "What movie are you gonna pick?"

"How about…" Catherine tapped her chin, pretending to think. "Mulan."

"I love Mulan!" Angie announced as she did with every princess, touting their traits with every viewing. "She's brave and smart and beautiful."

"Just like mommy," DJ leaned into Catherine's side and smiled when she kissed his head.

Steve pressed play and as the credits began, leaned over across the kids to peck his wife's lips. "I couldn't agree more."
