Stefan.

Stefan Salvatore rolled over to turn off his alarm clock. Today was his first day of school, and he really didn't know what to expect.

The thing about Stefan is that he's done about 30 years of school. Stefan is 162 years old and going back to his senior year for the 17th time.

A week ago, Stefan had returned to Mystic Falls, his hometown, to try to start again. Stefan had been running away from his problems in Mystic Falls and he decided now was a good time to face them.

Stefan got out of bed and quickly got dressed into a gray shirt, and blue ripped jeans. He grabbed his favorite leather jacket and threw it over his shoulder. He combed back his light brown hair, and stared in the mirror at his forest green colored eyes. Stefan then walked out of his room, but came to a stop when he realized he absentmindedly walked into his brother's vacant room.

Stefan had found himself longing to see his brother recently. Even though he knew the only thing that followed Damon Salvatore was danger, death, and destruction, he still wanted to see him more than anything.

Stefan picked up one of the shredded books that were on his desk. The last time Damon was here he completely destroyed the entire boarding house. Stefan fixed up the entire place but couldn't force himself to clean out Damon's room. He flipped through the remaining pages in the book, while letting out a long sigh. He put the book back down on the desk.

Stefan looked up to see the giant picture of Damon that hung on the wall. His short dark brown hair was slicked back, and he was wearing a fancy gray suit from the 1800. Every member of the Salvatore family had a picture painted of them when they turned 16, that was then hung in their room. Stefan remembered just how bad Damon's 16th birthday had been.

June 18th 1855,

"Happy birthday big brother!" A 9 year old Stefan squealed into his sleeping brother's ear. Damon shot up knocking Stefan off his bed. Damon heard a thump and quickly got out of bed. Stefan had fallen off the bed and skidded his knee on the carpet. Giving him major carpet burn. Stefan looked up at his brother and then started crying.

"Hey I'm sorry," Damon whispered, kneeling down on the floor next to his little brother. "Just stop crying, okay?" Damon asked quietly. At this Stefan began to cry even louder.

"Damon?!" The brothers heard a male voice yell from right outside the room. "Have you seen Stefan?" He asked, opening the door to Damon's room. It was Damon and Stefan's father. "Stefan?!" Their father rushed over to the two brothers. "How did this happen?" He asked. Still wailing, Stefan pointed towards Damon. His father looked up at Damon with eyes that looked like he wanted him dead.

Damon saw Stefan open his mouth to say something like "it was an accident," but their father didn't care. He grabbed Damon's arm and pulled him up so they were both standing. He slapped Damon in the face and then pushed him against the wall. Damon stood up quickly. His father pushed him against the wall, harder this time, knocking all the wind out of Damon. Damon looked up at his father and saw that he was smiling. He kicked Damon's back leaving him laying on the ground. "Daddy! It wasn't Damon's fault!" Stefan sobbed from across the room. Their father had hit Damon before but never in front of Stefan. Their father looked up at Stefan with a look of hate. While his father was distracted with Stefan, Damon tried to scramble away on all fours, but his father caught on.

"Trying to escape, huh?" He asked the 16 year old. He grabbed Damon's bare shoulders to keep him still. He then punched Damon in the face over and over again until Stefan's sobs became screams.

"Please! Please! Stop!" Stefan screamed. His eyes wide in horror, while watching his older brother, who he admired with every part of him, get pounded by his own father. Stefan had always loved and looked up to his father, but he didn't know if he would ever be able to forgive him for what he was witnessing. Their father looked up at Stefan. Stefan had never seen his father look like that before, he had Damon's blood on his face and his hands. He also looked murderous, like if Stefan said anything else he would kill Damon right where he stood.

"Shut it, boy," he said. He then snapped his attention back to Damon. At that Stefan's screams turned into muffled sobs. His father kept pounding Damon. That is, until Damon let out a strangled scream. Their father went red with rage. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," he mumbled, slowly taking off his belt. Stefan wondered what his father was going to do with it. But the 9 year old soon got his answer when he saw his father bring it down on Damon's back. It made a loud crack when it made contact with the older brother's flesh, making Stefan yelp. Damon whimpered but stayed still. After about 10 lashes Damon passed out, leaving Stefan alone with their father. His father stood up to his full height, shooting Stefan a look that read "this never happened," and left the room. Still crying, Stefan slowly approached his unconscious older brother. He tried to shake Damon awake but he wouldn't wake up. So, Stefan did the only other thing he knew would help, he screamed for his mother.

Their mother walked in and her eyes flicked to a motionless Damon on the floor.

"Stefan what happened?" She asked, her voice surprisingly calm, but Stefan didn't miss the fact that she sounded like she didn't care. It was as if this had happened before. Stefan just couldn't understand why his mother didn't seem to care. She picked up the still 16 year old and put him on his bed. Stefan was stuck in his own mind, he couldn't speak. It felt like his tongue weighed a thousand pounds.

So the only thing Stefan managed to get out was "f-f-father". His mother sighed, getting up to walk to the bathroom. Stefan followed his mother, he wasn't sure where else to be. Their mother picked out a small white zip-up bag, and a white box with a red plus sign on it. It was the same one his father used to clean up Stefan's knee the one time he got hurt playing football with Damon. Sfefan then followed his mother back to Damon's room as she cleaned up all of her eldest son's wounds. She took a few brushes out of the small white zip-up bag, which Stefan realized was his mother's makeup bag. While she was grabbing more things out of it she asked.

"Can you wake up your brother, please?"

"Sure," Stefan replied. He shook Damon's bare shoulder. "Brother, wake up," he pleaded. Stefan's forest green eyes were met with very tired looking blue ones.

"Stefan?" Damon whispered. His eyes slowly moved to where his mother was. "Mother?"

"Yes Damon, sit up so I can do something, please," she asked, pushing her long red hair behind her shoulders. Damon complied, with a wince of pain when he sat up. Their mother carefully applied the makeup over Damon's wounds. After that she laid out a gray suit, with big white sleeves, and a red tie. Stefan and his mother walked out, leaving Damon to get changed.

About 10 minutes later Damon walked out wearing the suit. "Hurry Damon, it's time for pictures," she said, grabbing Damon's arm and pulling him into a room Damon or Stefan were never allowed in.

The room only had one window, only letting in a little bit of sunlight. There was only one chair and it was a pale green color. The back of the chair was very tall so your head could still rest on the fabric. There was a red rug, and a wood bookshelf. In front of the chair was an easel that held a blank canvas. That's all there was in the tiny room. Stefan realized almost immediately that this was the room he had seen of all the paintings of other Salvatore's that were hung around the house. Stefan followed Damon and their mother into the room, but the door swung closed right in his face. Damon was in that room for what seemed like days, people went in and out from the room but it was never Damon who came out.

It was night time by the next time Stefan got to see his brother. Damon looked exhausted, and his blue eyes looked so far away. Usually Damon read Stefan a story before bed, but the only thing Damon managed to do was give Stefan a hug before he crashed onto his own bed.

Stefan shuddered just thinking about Damon's birthday. He looked at Damon's bright blue eyes in the picture that were glossed over. Damon's fake smile was so obvious to Stefan yet he couldn't understand why no one else was able to see it. Stefan looked away from the picture quickly and started walking toward the door.

Until, Stefan heard a crunch under his foot and he picked up what looked like a picture frame that had been shattered. He turned the picture frame around for his eyes to meet a picture that made them water. It was a black and white picture of a 5 year old version of himself and a 12 year old version of Damon. Little Stefan and Damon were smiling at the camera, and god did Stefan remember that day.

Stefan had been annoying Damon all day, asking Damon to teach him how to play football. Finally after hours of bugging him, he gave in so they played football together. Their mother came out and wanted to take a picture of them. So naturally, that meant that Damon would kick the back of Stefan's heels until he laughed or smiled. And 5 year old Stefan had done both of those things. Which then made Damon smile brightly.

This was Stefan's favorite picture of him and Damon and this caused Stefan to remember the last time Damon had been here, and how angry he had gotten.

February 28th 1864,

"You what?!" Damon yelled, throwing his arms up in the air.

"Damon, I'm sorry. We couldn't trust her," Stefan apologized.

"You betrayed me Stefan!" He screamed, furrowing his brows. Stefan saw Damon's eyes gloss over. "I love Katherine!" Damon yelled, vigorously wiping away frustrated tears that fell.

"No you don't. She compelled you Damon," Stefan explained.

"She compelled you!" He screamed, pointing at Stefan. "She didn't compel me! I love Katherine!" Damon explained angrily. Tears were leaking out of Damon's eyes, and he wasn't bothering to get rid of them anymore. "I loved her," he added in just over a whisper, tears falling like waterfalls now.

"I'm sorry Damon," Stefan replied sadly.

"How dare you!" Damon screamed, flailing his arms. "It's all your fault!" Stefan was starting to get angry now.

It wasn't my fault. Right? Stefan questioned in his head.

"Well I did it because I can't trust you Damon!" Stefan yelled. But he immediately regretted it.

"Why?" Damon asked quietly before raising his voice again. "Is it because I'm some kind of monster to you, Stefan?!"

"Damon-" Stefan started.

"No! I get it Stefan," Damon shook his head, and let out a sad laugh. "I understand now. You're not the only one who thinks I'm a monster," he sighed, gesturing to himself.

Damon thought he was a monster?! Stefan thought. He was surprised, Stefan always thought that Damon enjoyed killing people.

"You think-" Stefan began, thinking out loud, but yet again got interrupted by Damon.

"Well you probably don't want a monster as a brother," Damon said angrily. "And, I don't want a brother that will betray me!" Damon raised his voice again, making Stefan jump at his sudden change of tone. "Good bye Stefan, I really hope I never see you again, like you said yesterday. Your wish is finally coming true Stefan!" He yelled. And with that

Damon grabbed a picture that was on the desk, and threw it at the wall, out of anger. The next second the whole boarding house was torn to shreds, and Damon was nowhere to be found. Stefan picked up the picture that Damon had thrown and he felt hot tears run down his cheeks, when he saw it was a picture of a mini him and Damon. He didn't even know that Damon had this picture.

Stefan then sunk to the floor, sobbing, while thinking about everything they could have had.

Stefan let out a sad laugh, and put the picture on the desk. The saddest part was that he loved Damon, and Damon hated him.

For all I know Damon could be dead. Stefan thought sadly. No, what is wrong with you Stefan?! Damon's not dead, he can't be. Stefan thought angrily. At that thought Stefan shook his head, getting himself to stop thinking about Damon.

Breakfast. Stefan thought. He had completely forgotten about breakfast, and he was so hungry. Stefan walked downstairs, and into the kitchen. He opened the fridge and stared at the two packages of blood. Rabbit or deer? He questioned. Stefan decided on deer, and he drank the rest of the package.

Yeah, Stefan had a secret. He was a vampire. Him and Damon's, old girlfriend Katherine, was a vampire, and she turned both of them. Katherine died a long time ago, and that was one of the last times Stefan had spoken to Damon. He had seen Damon a couple of times since then but they never talked to each other, and Damon was pretty preoccupied with killing people.

Stefan is on an all animal diet right now, and he has been for a long time. Stefan doesn't drink human blood, and he doesn't kill people either. I guess you could call him a friendly vampire.

After he had drunk the package, Stefan started fiddling with his day ring.

The sun kills vampires. So naturally, being the smart creatures they are, vampires figured out a way around this issue. That was when the day ring was invented. Vampires could go outside in the daylight when they had the day ring on. But if it wasn't on, they would get fried almost instantly. Only special vampires found or were given day rings, Stefan was one of them.

Stefan quickly grabbed his backpack, and walked out of the giant boarding house. Stefan was at the school in about 15 seconds, using his speed running.

He tightened his hold on the straps of his backpack and walked into the school.

Stefan was pretty handsome, so like all the other times he had been to school, all of the girls were staring at him. Stefan walked to the office to get his schedule.

"Hello?" He asked. "I'm new here. I would like to get my schedule please," Stefan said, getting right to the point.

"Name?" the lady at the front desk asked.

"Stefan Salvatore,"

"Another Salvatore?" Stefan heard the lady whisper. Stefan wouldn't have been able to hear it if it weren't for his vampire hearing. This meant he could hear things he wasn't supposed to hear, and he could hear people whispering from far away. Another great thing about being a vampire. She handed Stefan his schedule and it looked like he had math first.

"Thanks," he smiled, waving goodbye to the lady. He started walking towards the math classroom until he stopped dead in his tracks. There were two girls behind him whispering, and he immediately recognized one of them.

Katherine? Stefan thought. There's no way. Katherine's dead. With this thought Stefan decided to go talk to the two girls.

"Hello," he greeted. The girls stopped whispering, and the one that looked like Katherine smiled.

"Hi," the Katherine look-alike replied. Stefan saw no difference between this girl and Katherine.

Maybe it is Katherine? He thought, but shook it off.

The girl that looked like Katherine, had straight, long, dark brown hair, and was absolutely beautiful. She had chocolate colored eyes, that were filled with life one moment, but dark as a black hole the next. She had long eyelashes, and was wearing a little bit of blush, and shiny lip gloss. She was wearing a purple button up shirt, and dark blue jeans that fit her just right.

"Well I'm new here, and I'm kind of lost," Stefan laughed, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. Obviously this was a lie, Stefan knew where everything was in this school.

"Well we can show you," the girl next to the Katherine look-alike said.

This girl had olive colored skin, and had wavy dark brown hair that almost looks black in the dark of the hallway. She had long bangs that looked like they could be annoying to get out of her eyes. She had brown eyes that were dark on the bottom and got lighter on the top of her eyes. She was also wearing a little bit of lipstick. Her outfit looked a lot different than the Katherine look-alike's outfit. It was black leggings, and a gray shirt that was tucked into her pants. She also had a black zip-up jacket just covering her arms.

"Of course!" The Katherine look-alike replied enthusiastically.

"Cool thanks," Stefan said happily.

"So, what class do you have?" She asked.

"Math,"

"So, do we! Okay follow us," she told Stefan. They walked down the hallway, finding the math classroom. "Here we are," she said, pointing at the classroom. "I'm Elena by the way! Elena Gilbert," the girl who looked like Katherine told Stefan happily.

Elena. Stefan thought. Not Katherine. Definitely not. She's too kind to be Katherine. Stefan thought vigorously. But someone spoke, shaking him out of his thoughts.

"And, I'm Bonnie Bennet!" The girl beside Elena added with a smile.

Bennet. Stefan thought. As in the Bennet family witches?

The Bennet family were the most powerful witches in the world. They scared all vampires, except maybe Katherine?

"Nice to meet you, Bonnie, and Elena," Stefan smiled. "I'm Stefan," he said. "Stefan Salvatore," he added quickly.

"Well it's very nice to meet you Stefan!" Elena smiled.

The three of them walked in together, and Stefan took the only empty seat in the class. Bonnie sat at the very front of the class while Elena and Stefan sat in the middle. Stefan was sitting right behind Elena. Stefan was completely attracted to this girl, and did that have anything to do with the fact that she looked like Katherine? Absolutely. Stefan saw Elena pick up her phone, she read a text message, and then smiled.

After a math class that seemed to go by very fast it was lunchtime. He bought his lunch and then looked around for somewhere to eat. He saw Elena talking to Bonnie and a girl that Stefan didn't know. They were sitting at one of the tables outside. Stefan quickly decided he would ask them if he could eat lunch with them.

"Hi, uh could I eat lunch with you guys?" he asked.

"Yeah of course!" Elena replied.

Stefan got a better look at the other girl. She had wavy blonde hair that was brushed to perfection. She also had bright cat-like eyes that were a greenish-blue color. She was wearing a knee height white dress, with a denim jacket over top. Her shoes were short high heeled boots. They were a light brown color.

"Oh Stefan. This is Caroline Forbes," Bonnie pointed to the blonde girl. "Caroline, this is Stefan Salvatore," she said, pointing at Stefan.

"Nice to meet you Stefan," Caroline responded, putting her hand on her waist.

"Right back at you," Stefan replied, putting his tray on the table. Stefan sat beside Caroline and across from Elena. Bonnie was sitting next to Elena.

"You're new here, right?" Caroline asked, twirling her hair in between her fingers. Caroline was flirting with Stefan, but he didn't really seem to care.

"Yeah, I moved here yesterday. I'm living with my Uncle Zac," Stefan explained.

Zac wasn't actually Stefan's uncle. Zac was 35 years old, and Stefan was 162. So, actually Stefan is Zac's uncle. It's a weird concept really, hard to get your head wrapped around.

Stefan knew they were trying to figure out if they should ask why Stefan lives with his uncle or not. To Stefan's luck they all decided not to ask.

"In a rush to get to school?" Elena laughed. Stefan laughed too.

"Yeah actually. I was kind of excited to get back to school," Stefan said, meeting Elena's brown eyes that now looked black, with his forest green ones.

"Oh really?" Bonnie questioned.

"You may be the only person in this entire school who is excited to be here," Elena told Stefan, while she inspected the crowd of people. Stefan saw her eyes widen when she looked at a certain boy across the field. "One second, I got to talk to someone," Elena said, anger coating her voice. She got up and whispered "it's Jeremy," to Bonnie and Caroline. Stefan knew he wasn't supposed to hear it. But he was curious, so he used his vampire hearing. Elena walked over to the boy, and dragged him somewhere she could talk to him without anyone knowing what she was talking about. Stefan decided it was none of his business, so he listened to what Caroline and Bonnie were talking about.

"Yeah, it's so unfair," Caroline sneered.

"I can't believe he did that to you," Bonnie said angrily.

"I know right. What a jerk," Caroline responded. Once Stefan sensed they were done talking about that, he joined the conversation.

"So, what classes do you guys have next?"

"Science," Bonnie replied.

"History," Caroline said very unhappily. "I hate history,"

"Oh really? I love history," Stefan responded. History was definitely one of Stefan's passions. He is also really good at it because he's lived 162 years. That's a lot of history that Stefan has been there to witness.

"I was just kidding! I love history!" Caroline laughed. Bonnie looked confused, but Caroline sent her a look.

"Yeah Caroline, loves history," Bonnie said, taking the hint. Bonnie was about to say something else until someone else cut her off.

"Hey, I'm back." It was Elena. "So how was-" she began but was interrupted by the school bell.

"Time for class," Bonnie said, jumping up and putting her tray in the "to be cleaned" bin.

"I can take that for you," Stefan said to Elena.

"Oh, thanks!" Elena responded happily, handing her tray to Stefan. Stefan put both of the trays in the bin, and walked to history. Once he got there he saw Elena was in this class as well. Stefan took a seat in the very front.

To Stefan's surprise, history was really boring. And, that was because they didn't actually do any history. It's the first day of the school year so they pretty much just introduced everyone, and did activities to get to know everyone. Even though Stefan was the only one who didn't know everyone there.

Finally, it was time to go home. Stefan and Elena walked out of the school together. He waved goodbye to Elena, and started walking home but he saw Elena was walking the same way he was. So, he decided to walk with her. It was an enjoyable walk until Elena had to turn a different way than Stefan to get home. They both said "goodbye," and went their separate ways.

When Stefan finally got home, he immediately jumped in bed. Stefan had forgotten how exhausting school was. After about 30 minutes of reading a book, Stefan decided that he would go to bed.

But he would do that right after he visited his parents.
