Please review. It helps me so much! Thank you!
Elena.
Elena Gilbert walked into her house, happier than she has been in a couple of years. It's been a hard couple of years for Elena. Her parents died in a car crash more than a year ago. Elena was in the car but miraculously she was saved, but the same didn't go for her parents. So, Elena and her brother Jeremy moved in with their Aunt Jenna. Elena really hasn't been the same since. None of her family has been.
"Hey Elena," She heard a voice coming from the kitchen. "Could you help me out, it looks like we're feeding a zoo in here," It was Aunt Jenna.
"Yeah sure," Elena replied, making her way to the kitchen. When she walked into the kitchen she could barely even see Jenna, and that was because Jenna was holding bags of groceries that were stacked on top of each other.
"A little help here," Jenna mumbled.
Jenna's voice brang Elena back to reality. "Right," Elena responded. She grabbed some of the groceries and put them down on the counter.
"Thanks," Jenna let out a sigh of relief.
Should I tell her about Jeremy? Elena thought.
"Is there something wrong Elena?" Jenna asked worriedly. Jenna knows more than anyone that Elena has had a very rough couple of years. So that means Jenna gets extremely worried about Elena.
"It's just-" Elena started, but she got interrupted by the front door opening.
"Hey Jer!" Jenna greeted Jeremy.
"Hey," Jeremy replied, immediately going upstairs.
"Well that was a long conversation," Jenna laughed. "You want to tell me what's bothering you now?" Jenna asked, pushing her dirty strawberry blonde hair behind her shoulders.
"Jeremy," Elena started. "I caught him doing drugs again," Elena sighed.
"Oh god," Jenna stated sadly, letting out a long sigh. "Not again Jer,"
"I know. Are you going to talk to him about it?" Elena asked.
"Yeah," Jenna replied. "Jeremy Gilbert! Get down here right now!" Jenna yelled. Elena heard Jeremy come down the stairs, and she gave him a sad look.
"Why? What did I do?" Jeremy asked Jenna.
Elena decided she didn't want to be here for this conversation so she decided to go outside. Elena grabbed her bag and walked to the graveyard where she always hung out. Elena sat against one of the graves, and grabbed her diary out of her bag. She then grabbed her earphones out of her bag as well, and started listening to music. Elena always wrote in her diary, it helped her cope with her emotions.
September 1st 2009,
Today I went back to school. It was absolutely terrible. So many people asked me if I was okay, or if I was doing better after my parents. I hate when people ask me that. It's so draining. I just wish people would stop giving me pity. It's so annoying. At least, I got to see Bonnie and Caroline again. I haven't seen them since I stopped going to school in the last months of the last school year. I'm tired of responding to people's questions with "yeah I'm okay", "I'm fine", or " yeah, I'm doing a lot better". It's tiring, I'm just not sure I can do it much longer.
Elena felt her eyes fill with tears when she wrote that. She let out a long sigh, and continued to write.
The only good thing about my day was that I met a boy. But there was something different about this boy. He was different from other boys. I could just feel it. When I met Stefan Salvatore today, the dark in my life seemed to go away somehow. I don't know how, I just didn't feel as sad as I usually do when I met him. I think that I might actually like him.
At that, Elena capped her pen, and decided that it's time to go home, most likely Jenna was done with talking to Jeremy. She put her diary back into her bag and started walking to the river that ran right to her house. It was very convenient. She was about out of the graveyard when she saw white smoke fill the ground. Elena looked around, and she saw there was something moving in the white smoke.
"Who's there?" Elena questioned in horror. But, she got no response to her question. "I mean it! Who's there?" Elena was trembling now, she looked around vigorously, and the only thing she saw was the white smoke, tops of graves, and a single crow that seemed like it was staring into Elena's soul.
This crow wasn't here a second ago. What is happening?! Elena thought. Elena saw something move in the white smoke again, and she ran as fast as she could towards the creek. She looked behind her to see if she could catch a glimpse of what was in the white smoke, but she wasn't looking where she was going so she ran into something.
"Oh I'm sorry," A male voice said. Elena snapped her head to look at who she had run into. It was Stefan.
"No. That's my fault," Elena replied, looking into Stefan's beautiful forest green eyes. Stefan bent down to pick up Elena's bag that she dropped at his feet.
"Why are you here?" Stefan asked, handing Elena her bag. Elena nodded in gratitude.
"Visiting someone," Elena sighed. "How about you?"
"Same," Stefan said, furrowing his brows together. Elena could see Stefan was looking anywhere but at her. "Well I can walk you home if you want to?" Stefan replied, changing the subject.
"Yeah sure," Elena said, and they started walking towards Elena's house together. "So, who were you visiting?"
"Uhh, my parents," Stefan stuttered. "They died a while ago,"
"Oh, I'm sorry," Elena comforted.
"It's okay. What about you?"
"My parents as well," Elena sighed. "They died almost 2 years ago,"
"Oh, that's so bad, I'm so sorry," Stefan replied sadly.
"Yeah, it makes me feel sad a lot, but I'm trying to move on. Everyone says I should," Elena told Stefan. At that Stefan grabbed Elena's shoulders and pulled her to face him.
"You don't ever have to move on. My brother and I mourned for a long time. It was very very hard on us," Stefan started. "Especially my brother, he wouldn't sleep or eat. It scared me for a while, but he eventually got better. He got better by accepting it. Not by moving on," Stefan paused. And, Elena thought she saw his eyes gloss over, but she brushed the thought away. "I think what I'm really trying to say is you don't have to move on. It's better to not move on. You remember them better if you keep them in your heart," he told Elena.
Elena's mind and heart finally connected. Stefan was right. Everything he was saying was right. Maybe I don't have to move on. I always feel so bad when people tell me to move on, so what if I don't move on. And just deal with the grief. She thought.
Stefan continued his sentence. "The best way to overcome grief is to face it head on. I know it's going to be hard, but it will work,"
"Wow Stefan. You're right, I never thought about it that way," Elena sighed. After that comment they both stayed silent for what seemed like hours, until Stefan decided to break the silence.
"So, in the graveyard," he paused. "What were you running from?" Stefan questioned.
"I don't even know," Elena started. "I was just sitting there and then this white smoke started covering the ground," she continued. "I saw something move in the smoke, and then what seemed like one single crow showed up. It was like something from a movie," Elena shuttered. "Or a nightmare," she added. Elena saw Stefan's eyes go wide when she said the word "crow".
"You said crow right?" Stefan questioned. Stefan's tone was very mixed, he seemed horrified, relieved, shocked, and happy, all at the same time.
"Yeah?" Elena replied suspiciously. She saw Stefan tense, and the curiosity immediately got the best of Elena. "Why are you so shocked about a crow?"
"Oh, it's nothing. I just haven't seen that crow in a long time," he responded. Elena thought this was a very bad lie, but in all honesty Stefan wasn't completely lying. Elena wondered what he meant by "that crow" but she decided to ignore it. She didn't want to push Stefan to tell her things, besides they had just become friends. She looked back at Stefan and saw he was staring at the sky with a small smile on his face. Elena saw her house was right in front of them.
"Well, it was nice talking to you Stefan. Thanks for walking me home," Elena said happily. "See you at school?" She added.
"Yup, see you at school," Stefan smiled. "Have a good rest of your day," Stefan said, meeting Elena's eyes.
"You too!" She yelled because she had already started walking across the lawn. "Bye!" She said, walking up the front steps of her porch.
"Bye!" Stefan waved. Then Elena shut the door.
Elena let out a long sigh. It was official, Elena was very in love with Stefan Salvatore. Elena was brought back to reality by someone's voice.
"Who's the boy?" It was Jenna. She was leaning against the kitchen door frame, with her arms crossed. She had a smirk on her face, and she cocked one of her eyebrows.
"What?" Elena responded.
How did Jenna know? She thought. Elena was very shocked.
"Oh come on Elena. You make it so obvious. Next time you want to hide that you're in love, make it a bit harder for me," Jenna laughed. "So, who's the boy?" She added.
"His name is Stefan," Elena sighed happily, ignoring Jenna's other comments.
"Stefan, huh?" Jenna said. "Where did you meet this boy?" She questioned suspiciously.
"Well first I met him at school, he's a new student in our class," Elena explained. "And then the second time I ran into him, he was at the graveyard,"
"Oh," Jenna said, furrowing her brows together. "You poor kids," Jenna whispered.
"Did you talk to Jer?" Elena asked, changing the subject. Jenna's expression changed from sad to angry in record time.
"Yeah. I did," Jenna replied angrily. "I can't believe he's doing drugs again. I thought we helped him last time. I thought it was over,"
"Same," Elena sighed. "I thought you were doing better, Jer," Elena added in just over a whisper.
"Well I think I'm going to head to bed," Jenna yawned. Elena didn't even realize it was 9 o'clock.
"Okay goodnight," Elena responded. "And Jenna?" She added.
"Yeah?"
"Don't worry too much about Jeremy, we'll figure it out," Elena reassured.
Jenna nodded. "Goodnight," she replied, walking up the stairs to her bedroom. Elena walked into the kitchen and grabbed an apple and a granola bar, since she didn't eat dinner today. After she ate, she walked upstairs and opened the door to Jeremy's room.
Jeremy was sitting at his desk with his headphones on. He had his feet on the desk and had tear stains under his eyes.
"Hey Jer," Elena said. He didn't respond. "Jer?" She raised her voice. He still didn't respond. "Jeremy?!" Elena yelled, tapping him on the shoulder. Jeremy jumped and took his headphones off.
"What do you want, Elena?" Jeremy asked angrily.
"I just wanted to know if you're okay," Elena said worriedly.
"Well I'm okay. And, now you can leave," Jeremy snapped. Elena went over to Jeremy's bed and sat down.
"No," she stated. "Not until you tell me the truth,"
"Seriously Elena. Leave me alone," Jeremy responded angrily, tears threatening to spill.
"No Jeremy," Elena sighed.
"Just leave me alone!" Jeremy yelled. "Please," he added in just over a whisper, tears now streaming down his face.
"Oh Jer, come here," Elena told him sadly. She stood up and Jeremy walked over to her, allowing Elena to pull him into a hug. "It's okay Jer," Elena comforted, rubbing circles on his back, while he cried. "It's all going to be okay eventually,"
"When?" Jeremy managed to squeak out in between sobs.
"Soon," Elena told Jeremy.
Of course Elena didn't completely believe that any of them were ever going to be okay. But she had to try, what other choice did she have?
