CHAPTER 2
Meeting Aalto
Their journey to Advanta Peak was long, but not difficult. Their wheels rumbled on the asphalt, and the wind blew into Skye's face as they came past the main highway, and merged onto the Advanta National Forest Road, which led from the main highway east, to where the National Park was situated. All the pups, especially Skye, widened their mouths at the site of the wonders of nature, from the flocking Yellow-rumped warbler, to the lake and its wonders of fish types. As they encountered others driving alongside them on the forest road, they all were shocked at the pups of the well known PAW Patrol, three of them, out on the open rural roads.
Chase could see a mother warbler dropping off worms for the hatchlings. Up high in the sky, Skye watched as deer ate grass, and roamed limitless and free as large gushes of water came from a hot spring in the middle of the field by them. All of the pups, especially Skye, were amazed at the vast scenery Advanta Peak had, and they had all thought why Ryder had never taken them there before! On their way up the mountain leading up to Advanta Peak's highest point, they could see the vast lodges and vans people had rented for a long vacation this spring.
After driving up the peak, they finally saw an airfield. Advanta Peak Air Attack, at least as they hoped. It wasn't as fancy as they envisioned, with numerous buildings having some lean form of damage, wear, or tear. As they all looked around they could see a group of aircraft, getting some form of maintenance, or sitting blankly in the hangar. , a group of three male pups jumped over a pile of gravel and sand, sliding down in front of the pups as they came to a stop quickly, and the pups jumped out of their vehicles after Skye had landed, and looked with a raised brow at the group.
"Woah! Watch it! You almost got hit by another pup!" A female like voice responded, coming from behind the pile of gravel. As the grey furred and blue eyed pup looked at her group with slight angst.
"Hey uh, I know you guys are likely busy and don't want to be bothered... but we are looking for Advanta Peak Air Attack?" Chase tilted his head, slightly moving his collar as he looked at the pups standing in front of them.
"You are there!" Two of the male pups, a brown and silver furred, with green and golden eyes jumped and hit their bodies together, similar to what humans called a fist bump, but in their own style!
"Serving Advanta Peak since 2001, you must be the new recruits, we heard you were coming a long time ago." She paused, looking over at the rest of her crew, left to right. "I'm Keahi, that there is Arno, Rynver, and the one who almost hit you, is Destan." She looked back, smirking slightly at the new recruits, how did she know? Not probable Chase knew, if his bewildered expression from it didn't give it away. Arno was a male Alaskan Malamute, with grey fur and heterochromia in his eyes, his left eye blue, and his right red. Rynver was a Australian Shepherd, with blue eyes and numerous spots alongside his floppy ears, Destan on the other hand was a Border Collie, in a black and white two tone fur color. He took a mental note, and nodded at the information Keahi had given him.
"Hey, I am Chase, and there is Everest and Skye with me too." Chase partially smiled, as a cheery Everest and Skye came up alongside Chase, as he looked behind him at he sounds of someone almost high pitched screaming, and Keahi sighed.
"I-Is it really you! C-Chase!" The white male with brown hair said, with an excited voice tone in his expression, crouching down in front of them.
"Y-Yeah?" Chase seemed shocked, but still managed, albeit barely, to maintain his stability with someone this excited, an adult to be said, over him.
"You can call me Cove, as everyone has called me!" He said afterwards, his smile still apparent as Chase coughed to change the subject.
"I'm looking for a pup named Aalto?" Chase asked, Everest also raising a brow at the question. They had been confirmed to be at Advanta Peak Air Attack, but... Aalto was nowhere in sight?
"Oh, Aalto?" Keahi began. "Oh he is out looking for spot fires, he should be back soon." Before Chase, Everest, or Skye could say a thing, a deepened male voice was heard behind them.
"There was a recent storm earlier. Just like the smashing of the cymbals, which create thunder, which is after lighting, and with lightning, comes fire." His voice stopped, as Cove chuckled and shook his head left and right. As that was said, the alarms around the facility rang out, and a female voice cam over the speaker.
"Attention all personnel, we have a report of a wildfire!" Everyone paused, as a ginger bearded mechanic came running out, looking at everyone.
"Alright boys! Lets load up!" Everyone began running off. Several pilots were seen running outside of the small hut, and the pups they met were running off into the empty hangar, parachutes dropping onto their back.
"The fire is caused by an unattended campfire, about five miles northwest, with a southernly wind on it." The speaker followed suit, as all the planes had their engines starting and were pushed back into position to be loaded up.
Skye, Chase, and Everest were all shocked at their mobility, as the ginger bearded man attached hoses from the large hoses into the plane's, as the helicopters attached onto their loads, and all took off as a dual prop cargo plane flew off, and all of the five aircraft got into formation and Skye looked at Chase and Everest.
"Hey Chase, and Everest! How about you hop into my helicopter and we check out what is happening!" She chuckled, as the two found a place in their seats. As she took off, they could see the wildfire. As they flew far behind the formation, they could see a yellow speck in the distance. Squinting, it looked like a plane, and their eyes widened as they saw a yellow prop plane fly through the smoke, and dropped fire retardant around the smoke, with the pup himself commanding the humans and the others.
"Cove, line up for a drop ahead of the fire, and don't get too low or you'll spread the embers!" The pup said over the microphone, Skye particularly watching as they dropped their loads. Chase, Skye, and Everest thought it must be Aalto! They were all amazed at their skill, and they looked to their right, watching the cargo door drop of the twin engine plane, and watched as the four ups they met earlier jump out and land on the ground. All of the pups were so distracted by the rescuing that they almost struck the plane, and the plane turned around, the pilot not pleased over the speaker.
"Hey! Get out of this air space!" The pilot replied before seeing the plane run into the fire retardant Cove in his plane was dropping, and he bit his lip nervously. Aalto, was not pleased. As they all flew back, Skye landed her helicopter and the mechanic sprayed them down with a water hose, cleaning her helicopter quickly and cleaning their fur from the retardant.
Aalto who had finally talked to them, wasn't pleased. He was like Marshall had described, but MUCH more mature, which Chase was able to notice quite easy.
"There... that oughta do it. Well, time to mix a new batch of retardant." The ginger bearded mechanic, whom they now knew as Mack, walked away, as Aalto came up to them.
"Now that you are cleaned up, once you all dry off you can go down south to the national park with everyone else." The German Shepherd looked off with his blue eyes, before turning back at the sound of Chase speaking with a long pause.
"Actually... we are the new recruits." Chase admitted with a slight frown of embarrassment, as Skye gave him the comfort he needed. Aalto paused, and looked at them with disbelief.
"You're the new recruits Marshall radioed in earlier? Oh brother..." Aalto sighed, shaking his head as he looked at Mack, him now looking up.
"Mack!" Aalto called out to Mack, with a neutral and irritated look.
"What!?" Mack replied, looking over as he dropped a wrench almost on his foot, his voice clearly stressed and irritated
"Rip of the helicopters landing gear and give these two some planes!" Aalto ordered, as Mack lowered his welding helmet, pushing her helicopter into the hangar and remove the landing gear, adding a forward thrust dual helicopter system, and adding pontoons to her helicopter, which now resembled a small plane more than a helicopter.
"Don't you think you could've given us... new ones?" Skye asked, as Mack chuckled slightly. "We don't even use the word new around here! I rebuilt these and those planes myself!" Mack rolled his eyes, resuming the welds as Skye walked over to a picture wall.
"Hey! You have pictures here on the wall, what does it take to get it up there?" Skye looked up, as Chase and Everest came up beside them.
"Saving lives..." Skye's eyes widened at his words.
"Oh..." Skye and Chase silently exclaimed.
"It is dangerous work training and being a firefighter... saving the lives of complete strangers they don't even know. They move in while others flee." Mack finished explaining with a less of a gravely voice. Mack told them it would be a while before they could start training, and that it would be a good idea to get all of their luggage taken to a small building they housed trainees in. As they walked in, they sat everything up for later that night. Their sleeping bags, food, and water. As nightfall came, Chase and Skye were talking to each other on what Mack had told them earlier.
"What he said... its on my head... I've only rescued people I know..." Chase began, sighing as he looked straight up. Almost all of his rescues in Adventure Bay were of people he knew, not complete strangers. But he had to put it off... time was running short, and Adventure Bay needed to be recertified. Skye however yawned, and after nodding looked over.
"Yeah... I know... Chase... but remember! We are doing this for Marshall, and Adventure Bay." Skye said soon after his phrases, while Everest, was simply fast asleep, drooling practically. She made her attempt to assure her long time friend, and smiled.
"I guess you are right Skye... this is for Marshall..." Chase spoke weakly at the last part of the sentence, as Skye yawned again within a three minute period. Skye looked from Everest sleeping to Chase, and sighed with a yawn under the covers of a blanket.
"Hey... Chase? Can we continue this discussion tomorrow? I'm tired... its 10:40 PM." Skye yawned, and Chase sighed. After looking at Skye fall fast asleep, Chase got up, and silently walked out onto the small porch, and looked at the stars and to the small light which was from a small pole near where they would live for the time, and his mind raced. What did... sacrifice and saving others... mean in retrospect?
