Chapter One: A reunion and a Funeral

2003- Sixteen years ago

"Today's training will be a joint exercise." Reginald stood in front of the two groups of children, Fredrick on his left, Pogo standing to the side. "You will be put against one another, powers are allowed. Number Four you will join seven on the side-lines to make it even."

"Number one and Xavier." Fredrick called, the two boys walking out from their respective academy line-ups and standing in the middle of the training area. "The first one to knock the other out of the training arena will win, good luck!"

Luther charged at Xavier with not much thought process besides trying to overpower him on sheer strength. Xavier's body began steaming, rolling out his neck his form altered, a large paw swinging at Luther directly hitting him in the chest a roar coming from him so loud it made the other children cover their ears. The boy was sent flying out of the arena smacking into the wall cracking around his landing site. Returning back to his human form he smirked at him, putting his hands in his pockets and heading back to stand over with his siblings, nudging his twin in the ribs playfully in celebration of his win.

Next were Diego and Jackson stepping into the middle of the area facing each other. The moment they were given the green light Jackson moved in a blur, Diego went to reach for his knives to find them missing, he looked up at Jackson who stood in his original position holding the knives between his fingers with a smirk across his face. Diego ran at him with a scowl on his face, Jackson had moved behind him before his eyes could register the movement and pushed on his back to overthrow his balance and making him fall out of the arena giving Jackson the win.

Felix and Ben stood staring at one another, unimpressed expressions across each of their faces, neither keen to participate in this little exercise. Felix walked to the edge of the arena and stepped out, tapping out making Ben the winner.

Sara and Allison sparred with one another, equally matched in combat skills matching each other punch for punch. "I heard a rumour... I heard a rumour you walked out of the arena." Sara eyes glowed over before her body took steps out of her control and stepped out of the arena forfeiting the fight giving Allison the win, she glared daggers at the girl who simply smiled sweetly in return.

The group moved outside for the final pairing, Aurora and Five stood in the middle of the courtyard facing each other. Five had a smirk on his face, Aurora sticking her tongue out at him. "The first one to get the other to submit, wins." Reginald announced taking a glance at his pocket watch. "Begin."

The moment it had been announced to start Aurora had used a vine to slap Five across the face, snickering at his annoyed reaction. Spatial jumping next to her to grab her she moved out of the way dodging him with ease. Every time Five landed Aurora could feel the shift of weight on the grass, vines shooting out of the ground ready to wrap themselves around his legs. He had to move quickly, running and jumping at a rapid rate to avoid being caught. He appeared behind her to grab her but she had ducked out of the way, vine wrapping around his waist and throwing him away from her. Five landed on the ground with a grunt, narrowing his eyes at the girl, his irritation rising when she winked at him. He got up off the ground quickly jumping in two quick successions surprising her at how quick he had managed to spatial jump from beside her to in front of her. Five lunged at her, forearm against her neck slamming her back against the tree in the middle of the courtyard. Smirking at the feeling of the vine already wrapped around his neck. His face was close to hers, leaning into her to apply pressure onto her neck. "Submit."

Aurora leaned closer so their noses were almost touching, the vine around his neck tugging tighter. "You first."

"It's a tie." Fredrick said, the amusement clear in his tone as he clapped. "Release each other children." Five and Aurora stared at each other, neither relinquishing the other, if anything the two tightened their hold against the others neck that little bit more. "Aurora."

Aurora rolled her eyes at her father's stern tone, the vine unwrapping from around his neck. Five removing his arm from hers letting her down off the tree. Aurora smiled at him tapping the side of his cheek before running off to stand with her brothers and sister.

"That was wonderful children! Very good, you are all getting better. Sara you'll get her next time and Felix, well you're a lover not a fighter eh?" Fredrick let out a belly laugh, ruffling Felix's hair. Aurora looked over to the Umbrella academy being lectured for their performances, Reginald standing in front of them reading over things they needed to improve on and he looked severely unimpressed. Her father calling her name brought her attention back to him. "Your powers are coming along nicely but now we must think about how to keep you from being defenceless when you're indoors."

2019- Present day

Five landed on the ground, he felt winded, that had taken a lot of out him. Rolling onto his back watching the rip in time above him close. They had actually managed to do it, his thoughts then went into overdrive about Aurora, he shot up and looked to his left to see her face down, eyes closed. He took no notice of the people that were around him staring. He gently wiped the hair out of Aurora's face, she was much younger than she had been mere moments ago. Her eyes fluttered opened coming into contact with his, he gave her a small smile but only confusion sat behind her eyes.

"Five?" It hurt her head to speak, pulsating with sharp stabbing pains with each word. "Did you manage to time travel?"

Five stared at her, his chest tightened in a sudden dread that perhaps went wrong during their return. "We did, we made it back."

Aurora tried sitting up, her balance off due to the pounding headache she had causing her to nearly topple over again, Five's hands grabbing at her protectively to steady her. Placing her head into her hands bending over herself with a strangled sob escaping her throat at the intense feeling in her head.

"Just because you look like a kid doesn't mean I won't kick your ass, Five." Xavier growled taking a hold of Five's shirt and yanking him to his feet. "Where the hell have you been for the last fourteen years with my sister you little turd."

"It's been a lot longer than that." Five growled meeting his eyes.

"Hey, hey!" Luther tried to come between them and pull Five out of the grip, Five's face was unamused, his mind elsewhere replaying the events that happened prior to them attempting to time travel back.

"Kick his ass!" Klaus cheered from the side-lines, cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth.

"G-guys… now isn't the time for this." Vanya said quietly, her eyes lingering on Aurora in the foetal position.

"Well, your idiot brother did kidnap his twin for fourteen years so, I think he's entitled to punch him at least once in the face." Jackson shrugged.

"Kidnap? Oh, please I'm sure she went willingly." Allison scoffed.

This set them off into a yelling argument, Luther trying to pull Five out of Xavier's grasp while the others were yelling. Aurora dug her fingernails into the dirt, the loud voices weren't helping her pounding head. "Shut up!" She wailed as vines shot out of the ground wrapping around each person in front of her yelling, taking each one up in the air trapped in vines and away from one another. The tear drops fell onto the dirt she was staring at like little bubbles, she couldn't stop them even if she wanted too. She looked up at them. "I don't know what's happening but please, stop! My head is killing me and I'm so confused."

Vanya slowly moved towards the girl bent over on the ground, a gentle hand against her back. "Hey, Rora, let's go get some hot chocolate?"

Aurora turned to look towards her, uncertainty across her face like she was trying to confirm in her mind that it was indeed Vanya who spoke to her. Understanding her confusion about everything that was going on she gently lifted up her sleeve, revealing a small little tattoo of a heart that sat on her right wrist. This brought a look of recognition to her face slowly nodding, releasing the others from their vine prison and placing them back onto their feet. Vanya gently took a hold of her hands, pulling her to her feet ensuring she was stable before leading her off towards the Umbrella Academy.

Vanya led her into the living room and sat her on the lounge, the confused look hadn't left her face. "What year is it? I assume not two thousand and five.."

"Twenty nineteen." Vanya answered taking a seat beside her. "You and Five vanished fourteen years ago.

Aurora placed her head on Vanya's lap, frown never leaving her face as she tried to process what she had just been told. "My head really hurts." She muttered feeling an overwhelming bout of tiredness take over her.

Vanya ran her hand through Aurora's hair in soothing strokes, hearing the gentle snores within minutes. Five stepped into the living room after a very brief explanation to the others that they had been in the future and weren't actually sixteen-year-old kids, they were in fact fifty-five. He knew from their blank expressions they didn't understand or even believe him but he didn't exactly care about that, he had more important things to deal with the apocalypse was coming. The fireplace was alight giving a soft glow to the portrait that hung above it, a portrait of him. He had found an old Umbrella uniform in his room, changing into it, the suit he come back in was far too big.

"She still thinks its two-thousand and five." Vanya spoke softly as to not disturb the girl.

"She must have overdone her energy share when we were trying to come back. I mean we are back in our sixteen-year-old bodies."

"Will she get her memories back?"

"Her goal was always to come back, she never lost sight of that." Five shoved his hands into his pants pocket and sighed. "Father did say time travel could mess with the mind, who knew the old bastard actually knew what he was talking about." He turned from the portrait to look at his sister. "We read your book by the way, found it in a library still standing. It was good you know, all things considered. Definitely ballsy, Aurora was cheering you on while reading." He caught the tug of a smile on the corner of her lips. "Revealing the family secrets. Bet it went over well."

"Our siblings all hate me."

"Oh, there are worse things that can happen."

"You mean like what happened to Ben?"

"Was it bad?"

Vanya dropped his gaze letting her eyes fall back to the girl asleep on her lap, giving a small nod. Ben had always been so gentle; he never wanted this life. Vanya often wondered if he'd still be alive if he had been in the Oak academy instead, their father had been such a kind soul, the complete opposite to Reginald. Xavier walked into the room quietly taking a seat on the lounge opposite the two girls. Vanya had known how much her vanishing hurt him; he'd have uncontrollable bouts of rage where he'd end up stuck in his other form unable to return to his human self. There had been many times where she would sit with him in quiet company to let him know she was there and missed her too. She wasn't sure if she should say anything, her mouth opening a few times but words never making sound. Seeing Five turning to leave she called out to him. "Dad's memorial service is on soon, you'll come right?" Five stopped to look back at her giving a short nod before heading out of the room.

Aurora sat up startling Vanya and Xavier, she rubbed at her temple. "It hurts a little less now." She sighed turning to look at her twin, head tilting. "Ah, you're old."

Xavier gave her a flat look getting up and charge tackled her into the lounge ignoring her squeals for mercy. Vanya gave a small smile at the look on Xavier's face, he hadn't looked this happy in years. It was always like he wasn't whole without his other half; the twins had been the best of friends before she had vanished and although the others tried to help him there wasn't much anyone could do. He finally stopped tickling her and sat beside her, grinning as she glared at him smoothing out her mess of locks.

"If it's been fourteen years where's dad? I know he'll be so mad at me for 'letting that boy talk me into doing stupid things'." Aurora giggled at her own representation of her father's voice.

Xavier gave a sad smile. "Roar, dads dead, he died six years ago." She had heard him but her brain couldn't understand the words he was saying, the tears welling up in her eyes spilling over in a matter of seconds. Xavier wrapped his arms around her pulling her against his chest feeling a whirlwind of emotions hit him. He had missed her more than words could describe but to her they hadn't been apart for no more than an hour. He had held her like that for a long while, letting her to mourn their father. Vanya had told them the others were meeting outside for the memorial before leaving the two alone. "He never stopped trying to get you home."

"I couldn't let Five try on his own, he said he'd bring me right back… I don't remember anything after that but… was he mad at me?"

Xavier gently wiped a tear from her cheek and shook his head. "You know dad, even when we deserved it he was never mad at us. Now we can skip this thing with the others if you want, Reginald can rot in hell for all I care but it's up to you."

Aurora stood up from the lounge wiping away any leftover tears from her cheeks, turning around and holding a hand out for her brother. "We should go, I'm sure they went to dads… right?"

"Yeah, they did." Xavier agreed taking her hand, entangling their fingers and getting up. "Missed you, brat."

"I mean if I hadn't thought I'd seen you just hours ago I might return the missing." She shrugged grinning.

Xavier led her outside over to where the others stood, holding an umbrella to shield them from the rain, going over to stand next to Felix. Aurora wrapped her arms around his waist holding him tightly; he kept an arm around her shoulder keeping her against him. The rain fell at a steady pace soaking both Diego and Luther who decided not to use an umbrella. Both academies along with Pogo and the umbrella's mother stood around a sombre Luther who held the urn against his chest almost protectively with tears visible in his eyes.

"When you are ready, dear boy." Pogo said, gesturing for him to begin.

Luther stepped forward and tried to scatter the ashes out from the urn, without any wind the ashes simply all fell to the floor in a pile at his feet. "Probably would have been better with some wind."

Pogo cleared his throat. "Does anyone want to say anything?" The silence was overwhelming, each person looking away from him not wanting to say anything. "Alright. Sir Reginal Hargreeves made me what I am today and for that I am forever in his debt. He was my master, my friend-"

"He was a monster." Diego spoke up receiving a snort from Klaus. "He was a bad person and a worse father. The worlds better off without him."

"Diego." Allison chastised.

"My name is number two, why? Because he couldn't be bothered to give us real names."

"Daddy issues." Jackson muttered under his breath, Sara coughing the laugh into her margarita glass.

"That's enough." Luther's tone was threatening, his eyes angry, tear streaks stained his cheeks.

"We all wished we could have been part of the Oak academy, all but you, his stupid loyal little pet." Diego spat the word pet walking up to Luther, prodding his index finger into his chest. "He shipped you off the moon for four years because he couldn't stand the site of you."

"Shut up!" Luther hit away his hand before throwing a punch, Diego successfully dodging before throwing his own punch. Allison rolled her eyes taking a step back for safety, Klaus doing the same putting his arm out protectively in front of Five who swatted his hand away. Pogo walked away in a huff as the two boys hit each other in a fit of overwhelming emotion. Neither male was very good at using their words.

"Typical." Sara turned on her heels walking away from the courtyard with Jackson following suit, the two heading inside no longer wishing to watch the circus act of two monkeys fighting.

"Do you want to stay to break it up?" Felix asked Xavier glancing up from his book, sliding his glasses back up his nose.

"Let them hit each other, it's their family business."

Aurora looked past the two fighting and at Five, their eyes connecting for a brief moment before the boy muttered something and walked away. Her whole body wanted to chase after him but she stayed put, her twin's arm securely around her to keep her from danger. Klaus had taken a seat on the bench with his legs crossed chanting 'hit'im' while Felix stood next to her going back to reading his book, umbrella resting on his shoulder taking no more notice of the happenings around him. Diego stood in front of Ben's statue taunting Luther to come at him before dodging the punch being taken by the statue, knocking it over falling to the ground shattering into pieces. "Well, there goes Ben you idiots." Allison shook her head, a glare thrown in the boys direction before leaving.

"Diego no!" But Vanya's call came too late as Diego threw one of his knives at Luther, hitting him across the arm. Luther grasped at the fresh wound slinking away like a wounded animal. Vanya stopped in front of Diego with a frown. "You never know when to stop do you? Why did you have to take it that far?"

"Got enough material for your sequel yet?" Diego scoffed at her. "Go be with the family you always wanted to be a part of."

Vanya clutched the handle of her umbrella tighter. "He was my father too."

Diego looked away from her saying nothing else. She turned walking over to join the three remaining Oak members, taking hold of Aurora's already outstretched hand into her own walking away with them. "I see not much has changed with you and them?"

"Doesn't help she wrote that book, quite scandalous." Xavier spoke as he held open the door for the others to enter.

"A book?" You're so amazing, Vanya!"

"It was a good read despite all the internal drama it caused." Felix complimented. "She was very kind to you, Roar. You should read it some time."

Vanya cleared her throat, cheeks turning bright red at the compliment, not used to getting positive reviews for the book from people actually in the book. A sadness sitting in the pit of her stomach knowing Aurora had already read it with Five but she didn't remember. Once Aurora entered the house Sara was grabbing at her cheeks squishing her face, Jackson grabbing around her waist to lift her up off her feet, squeezing her in a giant bear hug.

"Now you really are my wittle sister." Sara said making kissy faces at the girl holding her cheeks squished. "I could put you in my pocket you're so itty bitty.

"Sara." Aurora whinged dangling in Jackson tight hold squeezing her so tight she squeaked.

"Sorry, kiddo, you've been gone too long and we've missed the shit out of you. You're just going to have to deal." Xavier ruffled her hair grinning at the hiss he received in return.

Vanya watched the siblings squash Aurora in a group hug with a quiet jealousy, the love for each other radiated off them. Her and her siblings couldn't even tolerate being in the same room for too long before a fight started. She did love her siblings but they defiantly didn't treat her like part of the family, they didn't even treat each other like this. Vanya said her goodbyes to them, promising Aurora she'd come back to see her soon before taking her leave.

Aurora had spent the rest of the afternoon learning about what her siblings had been up to over the last fourteen years, they had stayed together as a crime fighting group until they turned twenty-one before going off to do their own things in life, their father nothing but supportive of the decision.

It was dark outside by the time Aurora had realised just how hungry she was, her stomach rumbling. She made her way lazily down the stairs and towards the kitchen hoping that there was food there. Her mind wondering to Five, she wondered where he was, he hadn't come to see her and they hadn't had a chance to talk. She hadn't even fully processed that it had been fourteen years for everyone else, she probably couldn't comprehend anything else Five would tell her right now anyway. She bumped into something and looked up confused seeing a man standing in front of her with a gun gripped in his hands. Taking a step back she saw that she was surrounded by men in black clothes with guns pointing at her.

"You sure this is our target? It's a child." One of the men spoke up from the left of the man she had bumped into.

The man held up a hand held device studying it intently. "This is her."

Aurora took another step back glancing around the living room looking for any plant life but finding none, swallowing hard she watched the men take aim at her. Felix leapt over the railing landing in front of Aurora, spinning around to face her. "Felix!" Aurora cried, his arms wrapped around her, blue fire wings bursting out from his back, enclosing around the two of them as the gunfire went off assaulting their ears.

Aurora gripped onto Felix's shirt looking up at him, he met her eyes and smiled. "Friends of yours? Or that boy of yours."

She gave a blank look at her brother. "We're being shot at and you're being a smart ass? Never miss an opportunity huh?"

A deafening roar echoed through the room, the two wincing at how loud it had been even over the gunfire. The gunfire ceasing with the men yelling at each other to change targets. Felix lifted his wings from around her, pushing her into Jackson's awaiting arms as he whisked her away from the danger within seconds.

Jackson dropped her off at the top of the stairs against a wall. "Stay safe please, we didn't get you back just for some dicks to kill you." He pat her head before racing off to help his siblings with the intruders.

Aurora crawled cautiously towards the rails to look out over the living area, Xavier was on top of a man ripping a chunk of flesh from the back of his neck. Jackson was running through the men disarming them from their guns. Sara had one of them trapped inside their mind with an illusion while Felix used his wings to cover the others from stray gunfire. She heard the familiar sound of a spatial jump and saw Five in the middle of the room immediately helping her siblings fight off the intruders, he was already covered in blood and she was concerned for him. He glanced up at her. "Aurora!"

Aurora turned to see one of them towering over her, the man's finger on the trigger about to shoot. A sword like object ripped through the mans chest spraying blood over Aurora who stared with wide eyes as the life left the mans body, dropping to the side. The previous weapon changed to a tentacle before returning to an arm.

"…dad.."
