Chapter 3: Your First Duel
Once again it was simply another boring, annoying day at Aldera Junior High. The classes were not exactly thrilling to Izuku since they never really challenged him on an intellectual level. Call it arrogance, but the subjects just came natural to him. Even with his laid back attitude towards the classes he still often fought for top of his class with his bully, Katsuki Bakugou. The two were constantly back and forth on the top, one or the other outshining the opponent with a small margin in the grades. This only added more fuel to the fire that was Bakugou, and the bullying did worsen for a good while before Izuku stood up for himself the year prior. That was an interesting day, since that's when Katsuki learned that Izuku's quirk actually existed.
Ever since then it was more of a rivalry then bullying, though it was a one sided rivalry. Izuku never really cared to compete with Katsuki, because no matter how things looked now he was still a bully in the end.
Classes ended soon enough, and Izuku was packing his things into his backpack. He wasn't paying attention, so when Bakugou and his goons were at his desk he wasn't expecting the explosion. Izuku backed up a foot, hand open and his mind ready to call whatever spell he needed to defend himself. Bakugou chuckled as he waved his hand passively. "Still so jumpy, Deku. Even with your weird quirk you're still a scardy cat."
"Tell me what's wrong with jumping back from an unexpected explosion, Katsuki." Izuku spit back with some venom in his words. In the back of his mind, Seto was nodding his head in approval for Izuku's actions.
"Shows you got no balls, Deku. Couldn't even handle a little spark on your desk."
"I'll show you a little spark, Katsuki."
"Why don't you try it, you worthless extra!"
"Why don't I just suspend you both now before that happens."
The two boys turned to see a teacher standing behind the two, Bakugou's goons in the hall waiting for him with apologetic looks on their faces for not warning him about the adult. Katuski sighed, rolling his eyes before walking away. "Whatever teach, he isn't worth the trouble anyways."
Izuku let out an annoyed sigh as he looked up to the teacher. "Thanks Mr. Yamoto."
The teacher chuckled before giving Izuku a thumbs up. "Anytime kid, anytime. Glad to see you sticking up for yourself, but remember that you can't always be willing to fight over an insult. If you want to get into UA, you'll need to learn to control yourself. Now get out of here."
The teacher waved to Izuku as he sent him off, and Izuku could only chuckle at the timing of Mr. Yamoto. At the beginning of the school year their normal teacher was replaced with Mr. Yamoto, and what a rude awakening it was for Bakugou. This teacher didn't put up with his antics, nor his bullying. Though he never officially wrote him up, the threat of his perfect record being destroyed was enough of an incentive for him not to dare act out around the teacher. Though it didn't save him from the outside of school, it did give him some sanctuary within his classes.
To say Izuku was excited was an understatement when he was watching one of the new heroes, Kamui Woods, fighting against what looked to be some sort of minotaur-like woman. Though he was constantly working on his quirk like a mad man, he never passed up the chance to watch a pro at work. It's one of the many reasons why he had several notebooks filled with notes about dozens of heroes.
Though the fun didn't last too long as Kamui was easily able to subdue the evil doer with his Lacquer Chain Prison technique. And seeing the pro's ultimate move made Izuku stop and think. Does he even have an ultimate move?
With the thought stuck in his head Izuku kept on walking home, absentmindedly walking through an underpass. As he kept walking, lost in his thoughts, he didn't notice the manhole cover bubbling with green ooze.
"Uhm…Izuku."
"What is it Joey?"
"I know you're trying to do your mumbling brainstorming thing right now, but something is coming up behind you!"
Izuku, after hearing the sound of rushing liquid coming towards him, rolled to his left to barely dodge the attack. He rolled to his right as another lash of fluid went at him. Izuku turned to face what was attacking him, seeing a mass of green ooze writhing about before a pair of lips sporting large, white teeth emerged at its center with a pair of large eyes.
"What is that thing!" Joey asked, Seto and Pharaoh watching through Izuku's eyes as they watched it move.
"Villain no doubt…guys, run or fight?"
Joey looked to Seto, who grinned and gave a thumbs up while the Pharaoh simply nodded in agreement. "Looks like it's time for your first duel, Izuku. I'll keep an eye on your LP and warn you if it gets too low."
Izuku nodded to himself, hand stretching out towards the foe before shouting out a spell. "Hinotama!"
Following Izuku's command a fireball shot forth from his hand, firing straight at the villain as it screamed out in annoyance as the ooze fizzled before slowly reforming. "What the hell kid! Why don't you just sit there like a good skin suit and let me go inside you."
"First off, that sounds absolutely disgusting. Second, I won't go down without a fight! Dark Magic Attack!"
From Izuku's hand shot forth another blast, though this one was conjured by pure dark magic instead of fire. And this time it landed a blow to the monster as it splattered everywhere. Izuku smirked, kneeling down for a second as he felt his LP leave him. He didn't lose sight of the ooze, watching it slowly rejoin with its scattered pieces.
"Shit…this guy won't stay down. Water is weak to electricity right? Do either of you have a spell like that?"
The three duelists talked to one another before shaking their heads. "No, nothing lightning."
"Alright…guess we keep hammering at it. Maybe if I summon Dark Magician Girl I can-"
"HAVE NO FEAR, FOR I AM HERE!"
Izuku turned to see that none other than the world's number one was coming from the sewer cover, his trademark smile across his face. The sludge villain looked at him with horror before All Might wound up his fist and let out one of his famous Detroit Smashes!
Before the young man knew it, he was helping All Might gather up the sludge villain. Usually he would have been in his fanboy mode, but facing the Sludge Villain made him think more than talk. He didn't have a proper counter; it seemed like a villain like that, and neither did the duelists in his mind. AS started to mumble to himself, which caught the eye of All Might as he twisted the cap tight over the bottle that contained the villain.
"Young man, are you alright? You've been mumbling to yourself for about five minutes now."
Izuku turned to look up at All Might, a sheepish smile across his face. "Oh yeah, sorry about that. Thank you again for saving me, All Might."
"Of course, that is the job of a hero after all! Tell me, how were you able to keep the villain off of you before I arrived?"
"Oh, that's simple. I know I'm not supposed to, but I used my quirk to defend myself. I think it's within my legal right to do so though. But my quirk was ill suited to fight against it."
"Ill suited? What is your quirk?"
"I call it Duelist. It pretty much allows me to use this thing I have called Life Points to use spells and summon monsters that I find in my mind." Izuku said with half truth to his words, still to this day no one really believed that the voices in his head gave him the abilities he has now.
"I see, that does seem like quite the interesting quirk indeed! However, don't be discouraged young man! I have nothing but confidence you will find a way to compensate for such weaknesses if you put your mind to it! Now if you excuse me, I must be off!"
And with that, just as quickly as the encounter with All Might happened, it was over. Izuku only blinked for a second before smacking himself for not asking for his autograph. That was a once in the lifetime opportunity that he missed out on because he was too consumed with what to do about his quirk. With a heavy sigh, Izuku continued his way home. Thinking consistently on what to do about finding a way to discover lighting to his quirk.
"I'm proud of you for fighting back, Izuku! Showing us all that time and training really paid off!"
Out of the three Joey was the most joyous about the 'duel' he had against the Sludge Villain. He figured things would be different in Izuku's world, but actually casting the spells like they were magic was incredible to see in a real fight. Seto, on the other hand, was deep in his thoughts as he didn't really talk. Neither did Pharaoh. Joey sighed and rubbed the back of his head.
"Ignore them Izuku, they are trying to think of a way to provide more ways to help you. Fighting the sludge monster realized that elemental factors are a thing to consider."
"I understand Joey, but maybe it's something that one of the other pillars would provide to me."
The three looked to Izuku in unison, raising an eyebrow each before Izuku continued.
"Well, All Might mentioned something about finding a way to overcome my weakness, remember? Maybe, in a sense, my weakness is coming from not being able to connect to the other pillars."
The Pharaoh thought for a moment, pondering Izuku's words before speaking. "Perhaps. Thinking about it, the cards we have in our decks are more or less aligned to a certain style. I mainly use Spellcaster type monsters in my deck, meaning only dark magic."
"And I use mostly butt-kicking Warrior types in my decks. Equipping them with powerful spells to make them hurt!"
"Hmph, my Dragons are powerful in their own right and don't need to consider elemental weaknesses."
Joey, Izuku and the Pharaoh all looked to Seto, who was now standing there as if acting like he didn't say something that annoyed them.
"What?"
"If Blue Eyes White Dragon can help combat the elemental factors Izuku might face then why not give it to him." Joey said with an annoyed tone.
"Because he isn't ready for it. I will decide when he is, and right now he isn't. If anything, he could have used the spell I gave him. That attack would have been enough to wipe the floor with the creep."
"Yeah, about that," Izuku said, "I can't use that spell without having Blue Eyes out into combat."
"Yes, I am aware of that."
The three others in the realm within Izuku's mind simply stared at Seto. Seto simply rolled his eyes at the three of them before jumping back to this throne to sit in his silence.
"Well, one way or another we will figure out something to help you out." Joey said, turning back to Izuku to give him a thumbs up. "For now you need to rest. You only have a few more months till the UA Exam right? You'll need to be prepared for a lot more training in that time!"
Izuku could only yawn, agreeing with Joey before closing his eyes and drifting into his sleep.
Toshinori Yagi, aka All Might, coughed as he sat down at his chair within one of the many meeting rooms inside the halls of UA. Ironically enough, he made it into the school just in time before his buff form ran out of steam. The now sickly, skeletal looking man sat in the comfy chair waiting for the others to arrive.
As he sat there, he couldn't help but think of the boy he met earlier.
He was strange, definitely strange, but how he described his quirk was a bit off putting. A quirk that let him manifest what he called spells and monsters? No, that sounded like something out of the old school comic books before the Quirk Era. No, this quirk had to be something else, maybe multiple quirks?
Multiple Quirks.
The thought alone made Toshinori tense up a bit, the hole in his stomach aching in pain as he went to hold it. If the boy had multiple quirks, then there would only be one explanation that would actually make sense. An idea he hoped wasn't true.
While he kept waiting, he texted a friend he had that he could trust to lead an investigation into the boy.
~Toshinori~: "Hello Naomasa, I hope I am not bothering you while you're busy."
~Naomasa~: "Not at all Toshi, something you need help with?"
~Toshinori~: "Yes, actually. Earlier today I encountered a young man with a strange quirk. He said it was something called Duelist. Could you look into this for me?"
~Naomasa~: "I can see what I can dig up. Is there a specific reason?"
~Toshinori~: "If what I suspect is true, and the boy is lying, I have a feeling he has multiple quirks…"
~Naomasa~: I see. I'll look into it right away and let you know if I find anything that needs to be addressed."
Toshinori let out a sigh after reading the last message, and just in time as the others started to make their way inside and to their seats. Soon enough each seat was taken, and at the head of the meeting table was none other than their esteemed principal.
"Okay everyone," The mouse bear said "Let's discuss the upcoming changes to the school curriculum!"
Author Notes
(Hello all, me again! I just wanted to do something real quick to give you an overview of what Izuku has learned and is capable of.
