2nd of September 1938, aboard the Hogwarts Express.
Huffing, Maggie rudely ripped open yet another compartment door.
In it were a gaggle of seventh year girls who immediatly cooed at the sight of 'adorable firsties'. The door was slammed shut by Tom and he, Alice and Maggie went to the next compartment.
Open. A drooling boy with a toad. Close.
Open. Scheming sixth years. Close.
Open. Quidditch fanatics. Close.
Open. Loud music. Close.
Open. Couples. Close.
It went on.
Maybe they were being too picky. The next compartment they opened was (to their relief) full of first years.
One big and burly one.
A silver-haired snob.
A tall, quiet boy with brown hair.
A short blonde boy reading a french book.
And last, a boy with grey eyes and shoulder-length black hair.
"Malfoy!" Alice hissed.
"Malkin! Never thought I'd see you here with friends!" A boy responded. It must have been Malfoy.
"Scram!" One boy hissed. "Pureblood boys only, Mudbloods are filthy and girls have cooties!"
Snorting Maggie made an attempt to close the compartment door. But Tom's hand stopped her.
"I'll be sitting with you then." Tom declared. His confidence was so intimidating, nobody dared to question his blood status. Tom had read part of the 'Pureblood Directory' by Cantankerous Nott in Flourish and Blotts. If he wanted to work his way up in the Wizarding World, he had to be a pureblood, or convincingly pretend to be atleast.
Maggie and Alice stared up at him in betrayal. "Fine," Maggie sneered before slamming the door shut, effectively making Tom flinch. "C'mon Alice will find somebody nice to sit with." And with that they both flounced off, leaving a flabberghasted Tom in their wake.
The next compartment door they opened was empty, and even though right next to the mean boys who had cooties themselves, the girls settled in.
"Alice, could you explain the Hogwarts houses to me please? I'm afraid I wasn't paying attention when Dumbledore told me about them."
"Alright, well there's Gryffindor where all the brave people are. There house colors are red and gold. Then there's Hufflepuff where all the kind and loyal people are. Most people say the Hufflepuff are losers, but they're awfully nice and their common room is next to the kitchen. Then there's Slytherin. People say all the bad wizards and witches are Slytherin but I don't think so. And last there's Ravenclaw. I hope I'm a Ravenclaw. All the smart people go there. You have to answer a riddle to get into their common room." Alice rambled. The Trolley Witch payed them a visit but Maggie had no money and Alice had already eaten. They continued to talk about the Wizarding World and Hogwarts till a prefect (Maggie knew what those were thanks to Alice) came into their companion and told them to put their robes on.
They soon arrived at Hogsmeade Station and hauled their trunks out along with Maggie's kneazle Merlin and Alice's owl Hermes. A teacher (Professor Merrythought, as they later found out) waited for them there and helped them get into the little boats, four each. Maggie was in a boat with Alice, a boy with tousled black hair whom his friends called 'Monty' and another boy with red hair who 'Monty' had called 'Will'. Maggie didn't think getting into a boat with them was a good idea because she had heard them talking about tipping the boat earlier but Alice insisted, since she had a crush on 'Will'.
All four got in and the boys introduced themselves.
"I'm Fleamont Potter but you can call me Monty and this is William Prewett but you can call him Will."
"I'm Alice Malkin, my mother runs Madame Malkin's robes for all occasions and I'm going to take over the business after I leave school," Alice was smiling brightly and forgot Maggie.
"And her?" Monty asked. "Hello?"
Alice was still staring at Will with a transfixed smile. She was in a daze.
Maggie cleared her throat. "I'm Maggie Eyre." Monty smiled at her.
Alice was still in a daze.
"Earth to Alice," Maggie waved her hand in front of Alice's face.
Alice now tomato red stuttered, "Sorry, got distracted."
Will smirked.
"It's Hogwarts!" Someone screamed.
They all looked up to see it looming around the corner.
Hogwarts! It was enormous with several towers, spire and had an air of magic to it, even stronger than Diagon Alley. They marveled at it until their boats hit the shore with a thunk. They stumbled out clumsily, unable to tear their eyes off the castle.
The next few moments were in a small room next to the Great Hall. Maggie was nervous. What if there had been a mistake and the Sorting Hat (Alice told her you put a hat on to get sorted) told her she had to go home again. All the children at the orphanage would laugh at her and Tom would no longer be her friend.
Before Maggie's morale could get even lower, Professor Merrythought herded them out into the Great Hall.
At the front there was a stool with a shabby brown hat on it. The hat was singing. Something about houses yada yada. Maggie had been distracted by the ceiling, she hadn't listened to one word. It was full of stars. They even had a moon! It looked so real; unlike anything she had ever seen before.
The first child was called up. "Abigails, Maude." Merrythought bellowed.
"Gryffindor!" cried the Sorting Hat.
"Abbot, Peter."
"Hufflepuff!"
"Burns, Helen!"
"Gryffindor!"
This went on forever, as it seemed to Maggie. Then it was her turn.
"Margeret Eyre."
The hat was on her head.
"Not Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, that's for sure! You would do well in Slytherin, very well." But Maggie remembered what Alice said. "You want to be in Ravenclaw?" The Hat asked, reading her thoughts. "Ravenclaw it is!" He muttered before cheerily exclaiming "Ravenclaw!" To the whole hall.
The named table cheered and Maggie walked back in shock. (Luckily, she had already taken the Hat off, unlike Michael Carson, who had embarrassed himself in front of the whole school)
She remembered a few notable ones after that like, Abraxas Malfoy and Tom, who had barely touched the Hat but were immediately proclaimed Slytherin. Alice, who had worn the hat for an entire five minutes (nevertheless she ended up in Ravenclaw) and some boy named Elijah, where the Hat had changed its mind half-way through calling Hufflepuff.
Arriving in her dorm an hour later, she didn't bother to unpack but just flopped down onto her bed, exhausted.
