The very next morning, Emily was the first to wake up. As soon as her eyes were open and she saw the sunrise, she gave a yawn, the looked to her buffer where her Friendship Chain was hanging. Then she smiled as a rush of excitement dashed through her boiler. Ever since the night before, she knew exactly what she planned to do, and she couldn't wait to start her day, and see the inventions for what they really were. Thomas woke up next and saw Emily's smile, remembering her secretive behaviour the evening before as she looked to him.

"Oh! He-he! Good morning, Thomas," Emily giggled.

"Good morning, Emily," said Thomas. "You look refreshingly happy. What are you up to today?"

"Oh! Look at the time!" Emily exclaimed suddenly. "Begging your pardon, Thomas! Can't talk! Lots to do and see! Do and see! Yes!"

And she set off right across the turntable and on her way to Knapford Station to receive her schedule, leaving Thomas further puzzled as to what she could be on about. He could tell already he would be left in the dark as to what Emily was on about...until he would find out in due course.

At Knapford Station, the Fat Controller was waiting for Emily, right along with David. Just the evening before, after Emily had learned the inventive truth, he had told the Fat Controller everything that morning.

"I must say, David. You have done Emily very well," said the Fat Controller. "I am now very eager to hear what she thinks of what she'll be seeing today."

"Oh, Sir Topham. I think this will be the finest experience with a Fair Emily will partake in," said David. "All the inventions Thomas has seen so far, she must see them herself!"

And at that moment, Emily whistled in and saw the two men at the platform. She smiled broadly and winked playfully to David. The Fat Controller was pleased to see Emily smiling again and came forward.

"Well, good morning, Emily. You look perfectly rested," he said.

"Good morning, sir. I've had the best sleep since the Fair began," said Emily. "All thanks to David right here. Yoo-hoo, David!"

"Hello, Emily," David nodded. "I've managed to find time to accompany you to the Fair today. Are you excited?"

"Ooh, I certainly am, David," said Emily. "Now, what jobs do I have, so I know when I can be at the Fair, sir?"

"Your jobs today put you right where you want to be, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "Your round of passengers today are going right to Ulfstead Castle to see the inventive displays...which gives you the chance to see the inventions yourself."

Emily's boiler bubbled with glee. "Ooh! Thank you, sir! I can't wait to see what they're all like!"

"I'm eager to see just what they can do too, Emily," said David as he leaned down and took her Friendship Chain. "And here. I'll keep your chain safe on the way to the castle, so you don't lose it. You're welcome to wear it once we're there."

"Alright, David. Thank you," said Emily. "This is going to be an inventive day indeed."

Emily collected three of her emerald coaches, and as soon as her passengers arrived, David got inside her cab and waited until all her passengers were aboard. Then Emily's guard blew his whistle. She whistled in turn and was on her way to Ulfstead Castle, just as Thomas pulled into the station to collect Annie and Clarabel.

"Hello, Thomas," said the Fat Controller. "Emily is certainly looking happier. Isn't she?"

"Yes, so she is, sir," said Thomas. "But...she won't say why. I know she talked with David yesterday...but what is she up to?"

"Well, Thomas. You'll just have to wait and see," said the Fat Controller.

Thomas kept these thoughts in his smokebox as his passengers arrived and he set off for work too...and most inventive news from Emily would soon await him when the day was done.

With her passengers, Emily huffed steadily along the line, and in a much better mood with her passengers this time. Instead of an envious green colour on her face, she had a light pink of excitement tingling in her cheeks and a dancing gleam in her eyes as she made her way along the Main Line towards Ulfstead.

"Ohh...I haven't seen the Fair since its opening with Kenji," she gasped excitedly. "I wonder what the inventors might think of me?"

David leaned out from her cab. "I'm sure they'll be most delighted to see a beautiful emerald invention like yourself, Emily."

Emily smiled and whistled cheerfully as she carried on her way, picking up passengers from Crosby, Wellsworth and Maron on her way, until she came to the line that would lead to Ulfstead Castle. Her points were switched and she was soon on her way. It was then that Emily noticed that she had not gone along this line ever since the first day of the Fair when she brought her last loads to get it ready, and when she saw Kenji's presentation. It had been three days since the Fair had begun, and now that her fears were curbed for the better, she would get to see these inventions with her own eyes, beyond the dream she had concerning David.

Eventually, the time came that Emily made her way to the hill that would lead to Ulfstead Castle, to which she took a deep breath and sighed strongly. This was the moment she had been waiting for.

"Here we go, Emily," said David. "To the World of Tomorrow."

"This is it, David," she whistled. "My chance to see the inventive nature of this whole Fair...the right way!"

And Emily huffed up the hill, bubbling with anticipation until she came to the castle gates. She went right through and looked up, remembering the preparations she had taken part in for this big event. As she came to the platforms and stopped to let off her passengers, she looked around and recognized all the tents, booths and refreshment stands from the start, and she looked further ahead to some of the other tables and could see quite a few inventions.

Then Sir Robert came along the platform. "Well. Welcome, Emily. We haven't seen you here since the Fair started."

"Hello, Sir Robert," said Emily. "I...I've been a little caught up with other things lately, but with my passengers here now, I was hoping if...I could see the inventions Thomas saw two days ago? Are they still around on display for me to see?"

"Of course they are, Emily," said Sir Robert. "Feel free to look around and see for yourself."

"Thank you, sir," Emily nodded as Sir Robert turned and returned to the Fair. Then Emily looked back. "Now, David...shall we look for those inventions Thomas saw?"

"Please. Make your may through," invited David. "Now is your chance to experience the inventive truth of this Fair."

Then he opened her regulator again and she huffed slowly through the castle grounds. Emily's eyes kept scanning left, right, up and down for any of the four inventions Thomas had already seen two days past. She thought back to her dream once more and wondered just how she would feel seeing them with her own eyes compared to the illusion of a dream. Then she looked ahead to her left and suddenly stopped. There on one of the tables, she saw what she thought for sure was the Mighty Magnet, and standing close by was a woman in a purple dress, teal green apron, brown gloves and short grey hair. This was of course Dr. Hetty, but Emily didn't know this yet.

"David..." she whispered lowly. "Look. On that table. Is that...?"

"That's one of the inventions, Emily," said David. "And I bet that woman is the scientist for it. Let's see what she says."

So Emily gently trailed forward until she came beside the table, looking curiously at the contraption. That's when Dr. Hetty looked up and saw Emily at once.

"Oh! What have we here?" she said with surprise. "Hello there, pretty emerald. I don't believe I've seen you here yet. May I ask your name?"

Emily felt a little wobble in her wheels as she introduced herself to the inventor right before her eyes.

"H...Hello, ma'am. I'm Emily. I...I've come to see some of the inventions at this Technology Fair. And...who are you?"

"A pleasure to meet you, Emily. I'm Dr. Hetty, and I am proud to have come to this Fair and show the inventive work I have put together. Thomas and Gordon have already seen the unveiling, but I don't think you've seen any inventions here yet."

"Well, do excuse my previous absence," said Emily. "All these inventions initially seemed very overwhelming for me to take in, but I've decided to take my chance and see them while I have the time. So...is this right here your invention?"

"Yes, Emily. It is You've come at a fitting time," said Dr. Hetty. "This right here is my Mighty Magnet. The most powerful magnet the world has seen!"

Emily took a look at the magnet and remembered what Thomas had told her the day before.

"Is...is that the magnet which got Gordon covered in chairs, tools, a rubbish can and even those milk churns spilling all over him?"

"Oh...well...yes," said Dr. Hetty. "I most certainly did not plan for that to happen. But I assure you, I won't let this magnet get you too messy."

"And I hear Thomas saved the Metal Man with that magnet too," said Emily.

"That, he did, Emily," said Dr. Hetty. "A really useful maneuver indeed. And seeing as you're here now, would you...care to see for yourself how it works?"

Emily remembered Gordon's experience and looked around, making sure there were no metal objects nearby. As she saw the coast was clear, she looked to Dr. Hetty again.

"Hmm...I think I'd like to see that. Just so long as I don't get covered in metal things, or get milk spilled on me. After all, I do have a position to keep up as Sodor's Safety Engine."

"Alright, then," said Dr. Hetty. "Whatever you say, Emily. But don't let the little size of this magnet fool you. Here goes."

And Dr. Hetty activated the magnet, sending out the same magnetic wave as before. Almost right away, Emily felt a strong gravitational pull like Gordon did, which made her shake and quiver all over. David and her crew stepped down to watch. In his pocket, David could feel Emily's Friendship Chain tugging away towards the magnetic force, making him grab his pocket and hold on tight so the Friendship Chain wouldn't escape.

"Whoa...Cinders and Ashes...that magnet IS stronger than it looks!" Emily shook.

Then just as it did with Gordon, the magnet flew off its control panel and stuck to Emily's smokebox, making her shake even more.

"Tha-a-a-at...fe-e-els...stra-a-ange," she shook and vibrated.

"It looks like you're getting quite the jitters, Emily," David looked on.

Dr. Hetty could see Emily felt strange indeed with this firsthand experience with the magnet, and decided her invention had made its point. She came right up to Emily and deactivated the magnet at once, making it slip off Emily's smokebox, and she stopped shaking. But even now, Emily could feel her axles shaking instinctively until she felt herself standing still again.

"Ooh...oh...that felt weird," said Emily. "I knew magnets attract metal, but I never knew we engines are...magnetic."

"Well, in the scientific matter of magnetism, of course you are, Emily," said Dr. Hetty. "All metal sticks to magnetic material. So...what do you think of the Mighty Magnet?"

"Hmm...an interesting piece of engineering," said Emily. "And unlike Gordon's experience, it's a very good thing there wasn't anything metal near me."

"Indeed, Emily. And a good thing I held onto this," said David as he drew her Friendship Chain from his pocket.

"My Friendship Chain! Of course!" Emily remembered. "Thank you for holding onto it, David. Otherwise, it would have gone flying."

And David placed it around Emily's buffer again, which Dr. Hetty noticed at once.

"Goodness, Emily. That's very lovely," she noted.

"It's her Friendship Chain, Dr. Hetty," said David. "It was a gift to her from my mother, and inside is a portrait of me, Emily, my mother, Thomas and Percy for her to always hold onto."

"That sounds very lovely, David," said Dr. Hetty. "And indeed very good of you to hold onto that."

"Well. Thank you, Dr. Hetty, for showing me your Mighty Magnet," said Emily.

"You're quite welcome, emerald beauty," Dr. Hetty smiled. "I'm very glad to have shared this invention with you too. Now, I must get on with the Fair."

Then Dr. Hetty left and tended to her Mighty Magnet. Emily took one more look at that invention and smiled. Hearing Thomas' experience was one thing, but to experience it for herself made her view it more clearly and with more interest now. David returned to her cab and they set off a little further through the castle grounds.

"Well, now," said David. "That was interesting. The Mighty Magnet. Quite strong indeed, Emily. And to think Thomas caught the Metal Man with that thing."

"Remarkable in its way, David," said Emily. "Although I don't I'd like to be jittering all day with that on my smokebox."

"No indeed," agreed David. "Now...where's the next invention Thomas saw?"

Emily's eyes looked ahead, and she saw another inventor. None other than Dr. Holyfield, wearing his light grey shirt and blue checkered pants. Then Emily saw just what was on the table beside him, recognizing it from her dream at once. David stepped down and saw it himself. There was the Milkshake Machine. As Emily stared at this invention, she discreetly remembered Thomas' milkshake muddle when she teased him over being a slowcoach because she was made to take the children instead of Thomas, angrily prompting him into racing her, only for his win to cost him the milk by churning it into butter.

Emily sighed quietly, closing her eyes as she leaned left and right, shaking her head in regret over that event. David saw this and got up on her running plate, making her eyes open again. She could tell David knew just what she was thinking.

"What's done is done. There is no need to dwell on that event, Emily," he stated.

"Yes, David. It's far in the past. Anyway...that's the Milkshake Machine right there."

David looked back to the machine, while Paul and Declan looked out from Emily's cab, and all felt a little jump in their hearts as they began to bud an idea. And David suddenly felt a jump in his heart.

"There it is, Emily," said David. "The one Thomas told you about."

"Hmm...I've picked up what happened with Sir Topham with this invention," said Paul. "But we're not so overly curious like he is."

Declan agreed and eyed the machine with interest. "Well, what do you say we take a closer look...and maybe...?"

"Enough said, Paul and Declan. Let's find out," said Emily.

Then she huffed through the grounds and up to the Milkshake Machine and its inventor, followed along the line by David. Dr. Holyfield was arranging metal cups which most milkshakes were served in for anyone to come along and enjoy one. Then he heard a quiet hiss of steam and looked up to see Emily right there, eying his invention curiously.

"Oh. Hello there, emerald lady," Dr. Holyfield greeted pleasantly. "I don't think I've ever seen an engine quite like you. What engine class are you?"

"I'm a Stirling Single, sir. And my name is Emily, Sodor's No. 12 Safety Engine," she answered. "Are you Dr. Holyfield? I hear you're the inventor of the Milkshake Machine."

"Yes, Emily. That's me," said Dr. Holyfield. "And yes, this here is my Milkshake Machine. What do you think?"

"Well. So, there it is," said Emily. "It looks most interesting, Dr. Holyfield. Very inventive, if I may say so."

"Emily's right, Dr. Holyfield," said David. "I'm Captain Rider of the Sea Emperor and Emily's best friend. Thomas says he saw your invention two days ago...and he told Emily what happened with Sir Topham Hatt."

"Oh, yes," said Dr. Holyfield. "His sample didn't go very well at all, did it?"

Emily blushed a little awkwardly as she remembered what Thomas said.

"Not in the least," she answered. "Getting covered in pink milkshake. He really should have let you do the work from the start, Dr. Holyfield. I know Sir Topham Hatt was excited. It's just too bad his only tooth at that moment was a sweet tooth."

"Perhaps you're right, Emily," said Dr. Holyfield. "But I still have plenty of milk and ingredients to keep the milkshakes flowing a little while longer. And speaking of which...seeing as your best friend and your driver and fireman are all here...would any of you three care to taste one? It makes the frothiest, tastiest milkshakes in the world!"

To this, Emily drew a curious smile and looked to David, then behind herself. "David? Paul? Declan? What do you think? Like to try one?"

David, Paul and Declan thought for a few moments, and even Emily started budding a little thought in her funnel until the silence broke.

"Well...just so long as everything is set properly beforehand, I think so," said David. "After all, we're not the ones to blindly explore inventions like Sir Topham did."

"No indeed," said Paul. "You're the inventor, Dr. Holyfield."

"Therefore, you manage the machine," said Declan.

Dr. Holyfield smiled and got right to work. "Very well, then. I'll just set everything properly, until it's all in tip-top shape."

Emily, her crew and David all watched as Dr. Holyfield turned a few knobs on the machine, pushed one or two buttons, waited a few moments, and then...

"Alright. It's all set! Now, Paul, Declan and Captain Rider. Would you care to discover a new taste?"

"Gladly. Even I enjoy sweet taste in moderation," said David as he came forward.

"Don't mind if we do," said Paul and Declan.

"Now, perhaps you ought to work the dispensers this time, Dr. Holyfield," added David. "We don't want any sloshy, sticky accidents."

"Of course. Glad to show how my machine works," said Dr. Holyfield as he drew three metal milkshake cups.

"Okay, then," said Emily. "Let's see what these milkshakes are like, Dr. Holyfield."

"Here it goes, Emily."

Then Dr. Holyfield placed the three metal cups under three of the dispensers. He worked one of the levers, then Emily watched as the concoction of thickened milk, ice cream and flavouring ingredients came fissuring out from the dispenser, much more smoothly this time, and filling up the metal cup until Emily could see the froth bubbling deliciously at the rim. Then Dr. Holyfield filled the other metal cups just the same. Within moments, a sweet, sugary scent filled the air, and even Emily licked her lips to the delicious smell.

"Mmm. Yummy," she tittered softly as she sniffed the air.

"Now, here you are," said Dr. Holyfield as he handed each cup to each man. "The frothiest, tastiest milkshakes in the world!"

David smiled broadly, clearly excited to see what this would be like. "Alright, boys. Let's see what this is like."

"Ready, Declan?" Paul asked.

"Ready, Paul," said Declan.

Then Emily's crew and David all spoke at once. "Bottoms up."

In that moment, David, Paul and Declan all put their cups to their lips, and took their first sip of Dr. Holyfield's milkshake. The mixture flowed into their mouths and down their throats while Emily watched and waited for their reaction. There were a few moments of silence that followed, then David, Paul and Declan all widened their eyes and looked Dr. Holyfield square in the eye.

"Dr. Holyfield...my strongest and most sincere congratulations are not enough," said David. "When it comes to milkshakes, I believe you surpass any expectations there could be!"

"The frothiest, tastiest milkshakes in the world! Thank you, Dr. Holyfield!" Paul exclaimed.

"Yes, thank you, Dr. Holyfield," said Declan. "So precise and pure...oh, that is most pretty."

"Thank you, and you are all truly welcome, Paul, Declan and Captain Rider," said Dr. Holyfield. "So very glad to see the true result of my machine."

Now Emily had been keeping quiet while she watched the three men sample the milkshakes and enjoy them, and she still had a little thought budding in her smokebox...and now that she had seen and heard what the three men thought, that's when she suddenly got an idea which made her blush lightly as she remembered being a chocolate emerald for Thomas to enjoy. She looked to Dr. Holyfield and tried not to sound too awkward as she felt her heart jiggle.

"Umm...Dr. Holyfield?" she asked a little shyly.

"Yes, Emily?"

"I...I can see David and my crew absolutely adores those milkshakes," she said. "And now that I see what they think...I've been thinking..."

"About what, Emily?" asked Dr. Holyfield.

Emily's cheeks turned pink as she slowly let the words out.

"I...I...I'm wondering...this may sound a little strange," she said. "But...do you think you could offer a little spoonful of that milkshake to...to me? Please?"

To this, David, Paul and Declan all looked at Emily with a certain expression, and Dr. Holyfield was most perplexed when he heard what she said.

"Y-You, Emily?" he asked with surprise. "But...but you're a steam engine. Not a person."

"That may be so," said Emily. "But I actually have tasted a few select things over the years. I once had to deliver chocolate syrup across the line, then I crashed into a set of buffers and got syrup covered all over me...and I absolutely adored that fascinating taste."

David remembered that time well, and looked to Dr. Holyfield along with Emily.

"...Is that so?" said Dr. Holyfield as he pondered curiously. "Hmm...well, if that's true...I suppose...one spoonful would be alright, if that's what you'd like."

When Emily heard this, she smiled broadly and gave a small giggle as her heart tickled with delight.

"Ooh! Thank you, Dr. Holyfield! What do you think, David? Do you think I could try just a little spoonful of this milkshake?"

"Certainly," David smiled slyly. "I would much enjoy seeing my best friend's opinion on...inventive and...delicious delights. He-he-heh."

So David went over to the machine, Dr. Holyfield handed him a spoon and David held it under one of the dispensers. Dr. Holyfield turned the lever and let out a dollop of milkshake onto the spoon. David nodded, then carefully brought the spoon over to Emily, who licked her lips again as he got on her running plate. She had not tasted anything like this since she was a Chocolate Emerald, and she was now every excited.

"Ooh...milkshake," Emily bubbled with glee, as the Fat Controller did before.

"Here we go, Emily," said David. "Open your mouth and close your eyes, and you will get a big surprise."

Emily giggled and tittered shakily, all too excited to experience a new taste in her mouth ever since that lusciously sweet chocolate syrup. With a tickly heart and wobbly wheels, she closed her eyes and opened her mouth, holding her smile as she did this. David looked to Paul and Declan, who nodded at once. Then with a gleeful smile, David brought the spoon toward Emily's mouth, then gently tilted it downwards. Then the milkshake slowly slid off the spoon and plopped softly onto Emily's tongue.

Then David stepped back to watch the result. It was worth watching. Emily closed her mouth and stayed still for a moment, losing herself into the following moments and feeling every instant as the milkshake's cold, sweet and creamy taste spread steadily over her tongue and through her mouth. In those moments, she felt a great and powerful shudder and buzz awaken inside her. Her eyes suddenly popped open, and she began to feel very tingly and bubbly all over with such a fascinating taste to have experienced. Then she suddenly let loose with a chorus of squeals and giggles.

"Whoo-hoo-hoo-HOO! He-he-he-ha-ha-ha! Wow, Dr. Holyfield! THAT is truly the frothiest, tastiest milkshake in the WORLD! Thank you, thank you, thank you! WHOO!"

"Odd bodkins!" David said jokingly. "It looks like our Emily has discovered a new spectrum in flavour!"

Emily was so overly fascinated by the taste of the milkshake, she felt her funnel tingling with pure delight. When she gathered herself and caught her breath, she flashed a big smile to the milkshake inventor.

"Well, Dr. Holyfield. That was truly fascinating. As Sodor's No. 12 Safety Engine, I give you my emerald opinion that your Milkshake Machine will indeed make lots of people really happy!"

"And for your most gratifying criteria, I say thank you, Emily," said Dr. Holyfield. "I'm pleased to have made you as happy as my three testers here."

"Well, thank you for your time, Dr. Holyfield," said David. "Now, Emily must see the rest of the inventions Thomas has seen."

So David, Paul and Declan returned to Emily's cab and they trailed a little further still through the castle grounds...until they came around one of the bends and felt a shadow cast over them. Emily looked up and suddenly gasped and stopped at once. Paul, Declan and David looked up with Emily and raised their eyebrows at once. Before their eyes, standing tall with its hands on its hips was none other than...

"Whoa...David, that's it," said Emily. "Exactly from my dream, and exactly what Thomas saved with the magnet...the Amazing Metal Man!"

And that's when a woman wearing a white jacket and glasses came out from behind one of the Metal Man's giant legs. Emily looked and noticed this had to be the next inventor.

"Oh. Hello there, lovely emerald," said the woman. "Taking a look at my Metal Man, are you?"

"Oh! Uh...yes, ma'am. I'm Emily. I came to see the inventions, since Thomas has seen them all himself. And you are...?"

"I'm Dr. Kim, Emily. And yes, this is the Amazing Metal Man...the one Thomas rushed to save with Dr. Hetty's Mighty Magnet, and what a rescue he performed!"

"Yes, he told me everything, Dr. Kim," said Emily. "You were showing how he's controlled, then something went very wrong and he rushed to the rescue."

"That's right, Emily," said Dr. Kim. "The Amazing Metal Man can be controlled by remote, or manually in the seat there in the back."

"Well...I be a monkey's uncle!" Paul gaped with surprise.

"What in the world...?" Declan asked, most bemused by what he was seeing.

"Hmm. So this is what they're getting on with," said David. "Giant Metal Man who can dance, so I've heard. It's...it's really something, Dr. Kim."

"Yes, I commissioned it myself," said Dr. Kim. "Now, of course, I don't know what else it could be used for besides for show, but you never know when inventions like this could come in handy."

"True, Dr. Kim," said Emily. "Who knows what something like this could be used for? But I am glad to have seen it myself. Thank you."

"You're most welcome, Emily," said Dr. Kim. "And very nice to meet an emerald lady like you."

"Thanks, Dr. Kim," Emily smiled. "Take care now."

And Emily started working her way back down the line to the platforms. When she returned, she idled for a few moments until David came out and up to her front.

"Well, Emily? What do you think of these inventions?" he asked.

Emily looked at David with a steady smile.

"You know, David...I really like what I see," she said. "After seeing them firsthand in my dream, to see them with her own eyes has changed my perception by quite a bit. She now see Thomas' point as to there being nothing to worry about. These inventions are mostly experimental and a chance for everyone to see how they work."

"That's right, Emily," said David. "Even I must say they're quite interesting in their way...but there's still one more thing we need to see before you tell Thomas anything."

Emily thought for a moment, then remembered.

"Yes, David. The Hover Car! And Ruth! I've only seen little glimpses of her while the Fair was being put together."

"Yes, Emily," said David. "Thomas has been forming an acquaintance with her ever since the Fair started. I think now is the time for you to do the same. Let's see where she may be."

And so they did. Emily made her way down the line again, and went down another path, looking left and right again for the last invention she had dreamed of, and the invention that had pushed her fears once more before the tables had turned for her. It wasn't long before Emily looked to her right, and there she was. That very woman in the brown jacket and short brown hair, and close beside her...that magnificent Hover Car. Emily held her breath for a few moments as she watched Ruth checking the car, having not seen her since Kenji's unveiling when the Fair started. Emily slowly came closer and looked in Ruth's direction.

"H-hello, Ruth," Emily said softly.

Ruth turned to the lovely voice and saw Emily. At first, she didn't recognize the emerald engine, but then she remembered glimpsing her on the first night of the Fair and looked a little closer, while Emily waited. Then Ruth smiled.

"Well. Hello there," she greeted warmly. "I think I saw you on the first night of the Fair when we presented Kenji, along with Thomas, Percy and James."

"Yes...yes you did, Ruth," said Emily.

"I see. And what's your name, lovely?" Ruth asked.

"I'm Emily, Ruth. I'm Sodor's No. 12 Safety Engine...and the most beautiful engine the island will ever see."

"Oh, my goodness! Well, you certainly are beautiful, Emily," said Ruth. "Your curves are so smooth, and gorgeous too."

"He-he-he! Thanks, Ruth," Emily gleamed. "I know Thomas has been talking with you quite a bit lately. He says you love steam engines."

"That, I do, Emily," said Ruth. "And I especially love how you look as a safety engine."

"Thank you. Oh...and...something else you'll be very tickled to know," Emily said as she leaned in closer to Ruth. "This may come as quite a surprise to you...Thomas and I are in love."

To this, Ruth gave a big gasp and smile, taken absolutely in awe by what Emily had just said.

"In love?! I've know steam engines to be really useful, but...you don't really mean in love?! You're pulling my leg, Emily!"

"No, Ruth. I'm not," Emily gleamed happily. "We've been in love for several years. It's Thomas who makes my life forever happy and wholesome here on Sodor."

"Well, I never!" Ruth exclaimed. "I knew a whole lot about steam engines, but I never thought they could fall in love."

"Thomas and I aren't the only ones, Ruth," said Emily. "There's Gordon and Rebecca, James and Molly, Luke and Millie, Percy and Gina, Belle and Flynn, and Rosie and Stanley."

"Wowsers!" Ruth gasped. "That is a most impressive surprise! But I really like the sound of that!"

"I'm glad you do, Ruth," said Emily. "Anyway, I came here today to see the inventions Thomas saw, while I have the time."

"Have you?" said Ruth. "Why didn't you come along before?"

Emily remembered her previous fears and didn't want to dampen the spirit.

"Well...I...I've been withheld by a few things and not feeling too perfect since that night, but I've since felt better, and I decided to come here and see the inventions while I can. Including yours."

"Have you now?" said Ruth. "Did you see the others yet?"

"I have," said Emily. "Dr. Hetty's Mighty Magnet, Dr. Holyfield's Milkshake Machine, Dr. Kim's Metal Man, and now...say! Is that your Hover Car, Ruth? The one you showed everyone two nights past?"

Ruth gesturing to the red car with tail wings. "This? It is indeed, Emily. Pretty amazing, don't you think?"

"Yes, I like those tail wings," said Emily. "And if...if you would, I would very much like to see how it works. Please, Ruth?"

Ruth pondered for a moment. "Hmm...well, I suppose I can show you how it hovers, Emily. But seeing it fly...well, that may have to wait for another time. I've already given my presentation for everyone to see."

"Fair enough," said Emily. "It is called a Hover Car, after all, and that's what I'm here to see."

"Me too," said David as he came down from her cab and approached the inventive woman. "Hello, Ruth. I'm David Rider, Navy Captain of the Sea Emperor and Emily's best friend."

"Wow! A Navy captain? Well, this is quite a treat for me to see!" said Ruth as she shook David's hand. "So. Would you all like to see how my car hovers?"

"Yes, please, Ruth!" Emily bubbled excitedly.

To this, Ruth approached the Hover Car, put on her helmet and goggles, got in and started the car. Emily watched with a racing heart as she the car revved up and made ready to do what no other car aside from the Road Plane could do. Ruth turned a few gears, then Emily and David watched as the car suddenly levitated in the air and the wheels folded inward under the car. Ruth was hovering in the air again, and Emily and David could not believe what they were seeing!

"By thunder, she flies!" David exclaimed. "She FLIES!"

"WOW! Whoo-hoo-HOO!" Emily whooped.

Ruth turned another gear which made the car spin around slowly in circles, giving Emily and David a view from all angles, until a few minutes later, Ruth lowered the car back to the ground and the wheels came out to their normal position again. David and Emily were in absolute awe, as was Thomas when he saw this invention.

"Truly spectacular, Ruth!" David exclaimed. "That car is certainly a thing of wonders. What do you say, Emily?"

"Your car, Ruth! It certainly does hover!" Emily exclaimed. "You truly are an amazing inventor to have come up with such innovative ideas."

Then David came down and spoke next.

"And now, Emily...you've seen all the inventions. You've seen the World of Tomorrow. As such...what do you think of it now?"

Emily thought to herself while David waited. Then a few minutes later, she looked at David, then Ruth and smiled hugely.

"Well, David...and Ruth...now that I have seen all the inventions for myself...I'm so happy I took the time! I've loved this Fair so much, and I'm glad to have seen it while I had the time. I see what these inventions are all about now...and I can see they're not here to replace any of us."

"Of course they aren't, Emily!" said Ruth. "Steam engines and the railway are some of the best inventions ever, and I know that will always be true for engines like you, and Thomas and all the rest of the engines too!"

"Well, some of the other engines have been wallowing in constant fear and worry about being replaced," said Emily. "But it's happened a few times before, and by now, Thomas and now even I think we're too old for this trope to go any further. And after seeing this Fair myself, I truly know there's nothing to worry about. Thank you so much for your time, Ruth. I'm very happy to have met you."

"You're very welcome, Emily," said Ruth. "And I'm very tickled to have met such a lovely engine like you."

"Thanks, Ruth," Emily gleamed. "Now...We'd best be off. My passengers need to get home, and I surely have more work to do until the day is done, and David surely has things to do himself."

"Right with you, Emily," said David. "And now, you have everything you need to tell Thomas when he finds out what you now know, as agreed in our pact."

"Oh, David. That, I do," Emily giggled. "Bye, Ruth, and keep up the inventive work!"

"Thank you, Emily. See you later," Ruth waved.

So Emily went right inside the castle, turned around on the turntable and made her way back to the platform and fetched her coaches, while David kept her Friendship Chain safe. As soon as her passengers returned and boarded, Emily set off back down the Ulfstead hill and on her way back down the Main Line. Emily was feeling very pleased with herself. Her plan to see the Technology Fair had now been fulfilled, and she had enjoyed every moment of what she saw, and she was now even more eager to finish her work for the day, then tell Thomas everything.

Emily let off her passengers at Maron, Wellsworth and Crosby alike until she returned to Knapford with the last of her passengers, where the Fat Controller was waiting. It didn't take long for Emily and David to explain everything about their time at the Fair, and the Fat Controller was impressed to see Emily's perception of the Fair now.

"Very nice to hear you had such a fun experience, Emily," he said. "And I must say...you certainly handled the Milkshake Machine better than I did. Glad you...enjoyed the new flavour. He-he-heh."

"T-heh! I'd LOVE to see what Thomas thinks of that, sir!" Emily tittered cheerfully. "Now...what work do I have left today, sir?"

"A few goods runs from here to Kellsthorpe Road, Emily," he said. "Then you're done for today. But first, you'd best take David back to Arlesburgh."

"Yes, sir. On my way, sir."

Emily hurried up the line toward Arlesburgh, while David leaned out her cab and smiled, happy to see she had truly enjoyed the Fair. But then as they went on their way, David suddenly began to think about the progress of his proposition to the SPD...and of those three figures Thomas told him about. If his intended establishment had taken any steps closer to becoming real, he had to find out...and calibrate when the right time for Emily to know the details would be.

Eventually, Emily arrived at Arlesburgh and dropped David off at his house. He briefly stopped thinking about his secret plans and smiled to Emily again.

"There you go, David," she said. "Thank you for joining me at the Fair."

"Pleasure, Emily," said David. "I enjoyed it all too...now, be sure to share all your news with Thomas...and see what he thinks of your newfound joy."

"I will, David," Emily smiled as she whistled goodbye and set off to finish the rest of her work.

David then went inside his house again, and resumed thinking about his proposition, wondering if there had been any word he needed to know. But he was scarcely one minute into his thoughts when the telephone rang. He went right to it and answered...then his heart began beating strongly to who it was, and just what was being said to him right now.

"Hello? Yes, sir...they want to see me again? What's the progress right now? I see. Yes...it's all arranged? Whoa, excuse me! Approved? Goodness, me. What's that? Intelligence reports from Maithwaite? Arrange for Henry to be ready tomorrow? Yes...I understand. Yes, I'll tell my crew and reach out to Henry, then I'll come by this evening...thank you, sir."

Then David hung up and began staring blankly ahead to what he had just been told. That phone call had come from the Sudrian Police Department...and everything concerning David's proposition had been all worked out. His proposition had been granted, and now was the time to coordinate it all as best as could be done. David picked up the phone again and telephone Vicarstown Station. When the stationmaster answered, David asked for Henry's crew at once. As it happened, Henry was at Vicarstown at the time, and his driver took the phone, and David explained everything he needed to, about Sonny, Baz and Bernie, and what he and his crew had been working on with the SPD. Henry's driver heard everything and gave a serious nod to himself as he answered.

"I see, Captain Rider," he said. "Well, thank you for telling me about this. We'll have Rosie manage some of his work for tomorrow, and we'll have Henry ready in the morning."

"Excellent," said David. "I'll pass the word to my crew, and tonight, I have a little more business to attend to with our SPD allies. Goodbye."

And David hung up and ran out of his house to fetch his crew and explain everything. As soon as his whole crew was gathered together, David took them onboard the Sea Emperor, and the talking began once more, until David would return to the SPD that evening for the much-anticipated talk...

The rest of the day passed. Emily got on with her work, keeping on time with all her goods deliveries, until the time came that she was done, and evening was closing in. At last, her time to bring everything forth to Thomas had come.

"At last. My work here is done," she said proudly. "Now, Thomas...I turn my attention and news to you."

And she set off back for Knapford to tell him the news...and hear a few things for herself as well...

By this time, Thomas had just finished his work for the day and returned to Knapford Yards. All through the day, he had been thinking on and off about Emily and her sudden lift in spirits since the night before, and he was immensely curious as to what she knew and what he would find out once the time came. He wondered if it had anything to do with the Fair and about her talk with David. If that were so, he felt as though he had to tell her his side of what had been going on...and about the potential threat to any of the inventions at the Fair.

"If she's feeling better because of what I might think it is, then I'd best tell her...about them," he said to himself. "It's only appropriate that she knows..."

Then sure enough, Thomas heard Emily's whistle from up ahead. He looked up and heard it coming nearer and nearer. Then there she was coming around the bend with a swift stride in her wheels. She looked up and saw Thomas right there, which made her smile broadly. Now she could unveil her secrets and see how Thomas would take it all. Thomas watched as she came closer and closer, holding her smile and a little glimmer in her eyes until her buffers touched right with his. Thomas looked into her eyes and could sense she had plenty to tell as they both waited for each other to say something.

"Hello, Thomas," Emily said eventually. "So...How have you been keeping today?"

"Hello, Emily," said Thomas. "I've kept a good position today with my work...but I've also been waiting all day to hear what you know, and what I should find out. Now, I must know...may I find out now?"

"Say, that's why you're here, isn't it?" said Emily. "I did say what I had to do today was for me to know and you to find out...and so now, the time for that has come."

"Alright, then," said Thomas. "What do I need to find out?"

"Well...you recall me going to see David yesterday...as the Fat Controller told me to do?"

"Yes," said Thomas.

"Well, I think it's time I tell you just what he and I talked about," said Emily. "He told me he's been aware about the Fair since the start, and I told him just how I'd been feeling...then he decided that given my fears at the time, he had to come out with what he calls the inventive truth..."

"And what is that, Emily?" asked Thomas.

Emily told him all about what David said about inventions that really were faster, stronger and more efficient than steam engines, but also how being new doesn't always mean being better than steam engines, as well as what David said about steam engines, diesels, signals, timetables, and the American Streamliners that truly ended up being replaced, whereas the steam engines of Sodor and beyond were here to stay as long as responsibility, reliability and being really useful were always there to shine. By the time Emily had explained everything, Thomas found it all most intriguing indeed.

"Wow...that is all truly fascinating, Emily," he said. "So that's why you looked so much happier last night."

"He-he! Yes, Thomas," Emily giggled.

"So you see, Emily?" Thomas smiled. "What did I tell you...just like you told me at the beginning? There's nothing to worry about."

"No, Thomas. There isn't," said Emily. "Which brings me to what you really should find out...about today."

"What's that, Emily?" asked Thomas. "You did say there was lots to see and do...and what was that for you?"

Emily suddenly drew a thin, coy smile as she answered...and secretly, ever since her little taste at the Fair, she had been keeping just a little bit of that milkshake somewhere in her mouth to put to use once Thomas said the right thing at the right time. As she made her answer, she spoke more slowly to see if Thomas would catch on.

"Well...David asked me what I would do about this Technology Fair, given the inventive truth I now know...and I told him...I would enjoy it as best I could. So with my passengers today, you could say I stepped into the...World of Tomorrow."

Thomas heard what Emily said and did nothing at first. Then he suddenly exclaimed and froze where he was, locking his gaze onto Emily.

"What did you say?" he asked steadily.

"I went to the Fair today, Thomas," said Emily. "Just as you suggested to me after you told us about the inventions yourself, when I had taken enough of all the talk about inventions...I've seen them myself. All of them."

Thomas could not believe what he was hearing. Given all the worry and fear Emily had displayed before, this sounded so unreal.

"No, no, no, no, no! I can't believe what I'm hearing! It's just unheard of!"

"No, Thomas. I'm not joking," said Emily. "I saw all the inventions you saw, and they're most interesting to see. And I now know just what they're like. I saw Dr. Hetty and her Mighty Magnet first. Quite like Gordon, it certainly did make me shudder and quake, but no metal things hit me that time, and it was interesting just the same. I can certainly feel its power for you to save the Metal Man the way you did."

Thomas still gaped in disbelief until he spoke again.

"I don't believe what I'm seeing and hearing...my Emily actually excited over the inventions now! All this back-and-forth of worrying and not worrying about inventions! This is OVER!"

Emily saw her chance as soon as Thomas said that.

"Eat this!" she suddenly blurted.

And by sudden surprise, she buffered up and pressed her lips to Thomas', kissing him wildly as she writhed her tongue with his...and passed that little dollop of milkshake to his tongue. Thomas popped his lips away from Emily and gulped, sensing a sudden buzz in his boiler from what he had just tasted.

"This is NOT over! WHAT was THAT?!" he exclaimed loudly.

"What do you think? A little dollop of Dr. Holyfield's milkshake," said Emily. "David, Paul and Declan all had a taste of their own shakes. They all agree it's the best milkshake in the world...and David gave me a little taste of the milkshake too...just like I gave you a taste of my syrup as your Chocolate Emerald."

"Well, Cinders and Ashes! That was so stinging STRIPEY!" Thomas rapped with a buzzing smile.

"It put such a buzz in my smokebox, Thomas," Emily giggled. "And I knew then you would have to hear about that. I then had a chance to see the Metal Man by Dr. Kim, which you saved with the magnet. And then, most importantly, Thomas..."

"Yes, Emily?"

"You've done it yourself while the Fair was being prepared," said Emily. "But now...I have a new friend...in Ruth."

Thomas smiled broadly when he heard this. He had to know how it went. "You did, did you? Just like I did. And did she show you...?"

"Yes, Thomas. Just like what you and Rebecca saw, I saw her demonstrate how her Hover Car can hover."

"And? How was it, compared to the dream you had about those inventions?" asked Thomas.

"Seeing them in a dream was one thing...but with my own eyes, I was elated, Thomas," said Emily. "Ruth really is a most interesting sort, and I think she brings a sense of flash to Sodor. So in the end, I've seen all the inventions, Thomas...and I'm very happy to have taken the time to see them. And that is what was for me to know...and now you have found out. David was such a big help through all that he told me, and I really am glad to have seen the World of Tomorrow."

Thomas had taken everything in, and his boiler was now bubbling with pride. Emily had seen the Fair after all, and just as he had originally hoped, she had enjoyed every moment she'd spent...and it was then that he suddenly remembered the night he took Percy's mail and saw David...and how he had originally wanted to tell her about it. Emily noticed Thomas look a little solemn and he looked right into her eyes.

"Actually, Emily...the more I think about it..." he said gently. "David wasn't the only one who helped you see the real side of the Fair."

"What do you mean, Thomas?"

"Well...despite what you thought before about me not being to help you," said Thomas. "Now that you've told me everything...I actually think I did help you after all,"

"How so, Thomas?" she asked,

"I...I had actually meant to tell you this earlier, but at the time, I decided not to because I didn't want to overload you with too much thought on top of your fears of being replaced."

"Well, my fears are over and done with, Thomas," said Emily. "What did you want to tell me?"

Thomas swallowed and buffered closer to Emily, looking right into her eyes.

"Well...when I took Percy's mail run last night...I made my way to Arlesburgh and I saw David myself. He was outside his house...and I told him how you'd been feeling."

Emily heard Thomas and took it in with a small nod. "You did, did you?"

"Yes," said Thomas. "He had been aware of the Fair and how you'd been feeling...and he told me not to worry about you from then on, and that he had a solution for you. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to help you before...but I now feel that if I didn't see him that night...maybe you wouldn't have seen the Fair at all...or even have felt better."

Emily briefly thought back to how incrusted her fears of being replaced were just a few days ago and how hard Thomas had tried to make her feel better, only to find his efforts didn't work. But now to hear of this bit of news, she slowly felt her cheeks go red with a sense of shame.

"Emily, what's wrong?" Thomas asked.

"Oh...oh, Thomas..." she said shakily. "I...I didn't know you'd seen him that night. The Fat Controller only told me that he told you how I was feeling, and that's when he told me to see David...but seeing as you told him about my position at the time...I think now that I was wrong to assume you couldn't help me."

"Really, Emily? And why do you say that?" Thomas asked.

"Well, you told me a few times over there was nothing to worry about, even though I didn't believe it myself at the time...and then when you took Percy's mail...you approached David and told him about me...and it's because you went to see him that he helped me and set everything clear for me. Therefore...in a way...you actually did help me, Thomas. David may have told me the inventive truth, but if it weren't for you seeing him, I probably wouldn't be as happy and relieved as I am now. Therefore, I should be saying thank you, Thomas...for helping me as always."

All Thomas could do was smile as he leaned in and kissed Emily on her cheek.

"Nothing makes me prouder than being able to help you, Emily. My beautiful emerald angel...and beautiful invention too."

Emily smiled back to Thomas and kissed his cheek too. "And you're my handsome cobalt star...and invention, Tommy."

Thomas nodded proudly, but then he suddenly remembered one other thing he had not told Emily yet due to how busy he was. She suddenly saw him looking down to his buffers and forming a nervous expression, which immediately made her sense something was not right.

"Hey, Thomas? What's wrong?" Emily asked. "This is all very good news, isn't it?"

"Yes...yes, it is, Emily," said Thomas. "But telling you about my talk with David reminds me of what else happened that night...something else I should have told you sooner."

"What, Thomas? What is it?" Emily asked.

Thomas took a deep breath and sighed as he looked right at Emily.

"Telling David about you was only part of my trip with Percy's mail last night. There's something else I have not told you yet, but now, it's vital that you know this."

Emily nodded and listened as Thomas continued.

"In the midst of this entire Fair...these inventions aren't the only new things on Sodor...and I don't mean that in the most promising way."

"Oh, dear. What do you mean by that, Thomas?" Emily asked.

"Well...I didn't tell you before since you were so entangled in all your worries and fears, but now, I think you need to know the facts. I feel that one or more of the inventions are in danger of being...stolen."

"Stolen? By whom?" Emily asked.

"There are three new individuals on Sodor, whom I've never heard of before," said Thomas. "One is an engine, and the two others...are men."

Emily swallowed nervously when she heard this. "And just who are these three figures?"

"The engine is a navy blue steam engine named Sonny."

"Sonny?" said Emily.

"Yes," said Thomas. "I saw him a few times coming and going from the Fair, and I helped him to the Dairy when Dr. Holyfield needed more milk following Gordon's incident with the magnet. Interestingly enough, in your case, Sonny bears a few resemblances to Bernard."

Emily looked to Thomas at once. "Does he? Like what?"

"He's navy blue, has a similar-looking smokebox and even his voice reminds me a little of Bernard," said Thomas.

"Hmm," said Emily. "Interesting. But these two men? Who are they?"

"From the murmurs I heard...their names are Baz and Bernie," said Thomas. "Baz is tall in a grey suit, and he seems particularly clever and sneaky. Bernie, however is very loose-lipped. I saw them first when I brought the food supplies on the first day of the Fair, and I saw them eyeing the inventions. When I asked if they were supposed to unload my trucks, Bernie said it's hard to unload trucks when they're looking for something to steal...I think. Baz stopped him before he could speak any further."

Emily had heard everything and she suddenly had an uncomfortable jump in her heart. Her Safety Engine intuition was telling her already that these men were bad news.

"That's not good, Thomas. That sounds very bad to me. When did you see them next?"

"It was after seeing Ruth's Hover Car with Rebecca, and I told you all about the inventions, to which you didn't want to hear anymore, and Percy asked me to take the mail. I came around the bend and I saw them with Sonny around a campfire. I heard Sonny say something about him not wanting to steal, and instead wanted to be really useful. Baz didn't like that and he said if Sonny doesn't help them, there's a scrapyard with his name on it. Then he said they would chat again after Sonny would decide where his loyalties lie...and I haven't seen them since. Most likely they're hiding and planning further...waiting for the right moment to steal any one of those inventions, if not more than one."

Emily now felt a new sense of concern in her boiler. Not of being replaced, but of both these men. While she could tell they weren't as villainous as Sailor John, she knew that inventions were worth masses of money, and if they were only using Sonny as means to an end, rather like Sailor John did with Skiff, perhaps Sonny needed to be free from both men, and she knew this situation would have to be addressed by authorities as soon as possible.

"Well...this is something to take to serious heart, I think, Thomas," she said eventually. "To hear you talk, Sonny doesn't sound too different from Skiff, or Bernard. He can't be a threat if he doesn't want to steal. He wants to be really useful like us. But with those two men...they sound very shady indeed. If there is anything worth worrying about right now, it's not about any inventions...it's about those two."

"Well, that certainly is more worth the concern than what we've been worrying about with those inventions, Emily," Thomas agreed.

"We'd better inform Phelps and Gallagher to investigate this immediately," said Emily.

"Actually, I don't think we need to do that, Emily," said Thomas. "I made sure to tell David all about those three, and he assured me he's attending to the matter."

"He is?" Emily asked while Thomas nodded. Then she sighed with relief. "Oh. That's good, Thomas. After all, he made his solid promise to the Admiral to protect us all...and I know he will stick to that promise for always."

"And so he will, Emily," said Thomas. "We'll let him deal with this matter. Perhaps he'll tell Phelps and Gallagher himself. But for now, I can't be happier than I am to see you looking much better...after you got to see the World of Tomorrow for yourself."

"T-heh! It was nothing, Thomas," Emily tittered. "This Fair really has been fun in its way, and depending on how tomorrow turns out...I can't wait to see the last day of the Fair, and what may come from it."

"Me too, Emily," said Thomas. "And I would be glad to share it with you and the rest of the Steam Team if we can. Now that you're feeling better, I would really like to see the whole Fair end on a high note."

"I agree, Thomas," said Emily. "Now...I see it's getting dark. I think you and I are ready for a lovely sleep together."

Thomas smiled and kissed Emily right on her nose. "I quite agree, Emily. Let's go home."

"I'd like that, Thomas," said Emily.

And she and Thomas set off through Knapford Station and back to Tidmouth Sheds. They went right into their berths, bade each other goodnight and fell asleep, awaiting the next day and just what the last day of the Fair would bring...

Meanwhile, as night settled on the island, and the moon rose over the trees in the sky, there had been a lot of discussion underway at the Sudrian Police Department. In the Detective's Quarters, David had been talking with Detective Phelps for some time now since his arrival earlier that evening. David had informed his men of the final confirmation of the establishment, arrangements had been made, and Henry was scheduled to pitch in to help in this establishment the next morning based on the intelligence report David had been waiting to hear.

"And so it's all official, Captain Rider," said Phelps. "Your proposed establishment is set, and we support its intentions for the good of Sodor, its people and its engines."

"Thank you, Detective Phelps," said David. "And what's this I hear about intelligence reports from Maithwaite?"

"Well, Captain Rider, we received this intelligence report from the Maithwaite Constable," said Phelps. "He says he was patrolling the surrounding area around Maithwaite, including the forest...and that's where he spotted our three fugitives. He listened in a little bit, and it sounds like this Baz character is just about ready to make his move and steal something or other from the Technology Fair, even if this Bernie is grossly undereducated in every way I can think of. And it seems that there really is something strange about this Sonny figure."

"Of course...hiding within the forest to conceal themselves, and waiting until all suspicions are gone," said David. "Well, my suspicions have stayed high ever since Thomas told me about those three."

"Rightfully so, Captain Rider," said Phelps. "We've done our part to approve this proposition, and I see you've done yours. Your men have been informed, and Henry is right on schedule to partake in this establishment...just as you are yourself, Captain."

"Of course, Mr. Phelps. My service in the Navy has served me well," said David. "It has awarded me many honours."

"Indeed it has. But in the nature of your newfound establishment, take this to heart, Captain Rider," said Phelps. "If you expect your men to succeed in ensnaring these fugitives, you must have shock, surprise and ironclad authority on your side. For if any one of these elements is lacking in your proposed maneuver, you must tread carefully and efficiently. You must catch them off balance before you apprehend them. Only then will you ensure victory, and your establishment's success."

David gave a navy salute to this, just as the SPD Chief came into the room.

"Wise council, Detective Phelps. Most wise," he said steadily.

"Thank you, Chief," Phelps said with dignity and a small bow.

"Report, Captain Rider," said the Chief. "What news from your crew's new establishment?"

"The strategy is working perfectly, Chief," said David. "I have Henry scheduled to go on patrol with my crew in a spare coach from the Breakdown Train, in an attempt to stay undercover while we search the rails for these three fugitives from law and order."

"Good. Good," said the chief. "Soon will be the time to strike. Soon will be the time to launch the main course of your operation and keep Sodor and its railway cleansed of any threats. Is everything ready for your special maneuver tomorrow?"

"Yes, Sudrian Chief," said David. "The unsuspecting fools know not what awaits."

The chief nodded impressively, and shortly afterwards, David turned and left the Sudrian Police Department to return home and get his rest. Then Henry would be ready first thing in the morning. Everything was coming to a close soon for the Technology Fair. Emily was feeling much better about everything, and David's explanation of the inventive truth had worked. Just like Thomas, Emily no longer felt any looming doubt or fear about all the inventions, and she had had enjoyed her chance to see them in a more intriguing light, and she ended up having fun seeing them all. But now that two more days had gone by, Baz and Bernie's plans were just about complete, and their time to steal those plans kept in Ulfstead Castle's tower was very, very close. After four days since its start, the Technology Fair was scheduled to wrap up and depart Sodor in just one more day, and there would be a great chase across the Railway concerning all these inventions in some way or other.

Yet another Star Wars reference at the end, this time to the 2002 "Clone Wars" scene where Count Dooku and General Grievous talk with Palpatine's hologram before the Battle of Coruscant. Next chapter will cover the climax of "World of Tomorrow", and the payoff of everything that David has been establishing, so look forward to all of that. Until then, tell us what you thought of this chapter, and as always, stay safe.
