The Hunger Games: Victors Retold

Inspired by The Victor’s Project by Oisin55 and Tales of the Hunger Games by Christian Blanco, The Hunger Games:Victors Retold tells the stories of all 75 victors of the Hunger Games, both canon and non-canon. Most chapters are around 500 words, which is perfect for any Hunger Games fans looking for a quick look into the archives of Panem.

4. Rufus Duffy

The tale of District Two's second victor is one that has been, mostly, lost to time.

Everybody knows that he was skinny and sluggish, particularly when compared to other boys his age. It's a well-known fact that the only person he killed in the arena was the District 7 guy. But what most people tend to, or rather want to forget, is how Rufus killed him.

The masonry boy evidently must have grabbed a mace from the centre and fled, for he was not seen again until the final fight. The attention of most Capitol spectators instead turned to Caspar Heath from the lumber district, the well built axeman who had made a large alliance with the boys from 8, 11, 4 and 12. Together the group terrorised other tributes, holding hostages and pretending to spare them before giving them a surprise amputation.

This was successful, not only in eliminating the competition, but also in gaining the support of the Capitol, who cheered on the alliance's leader as they turned on each other.

After a fight that lasted almost half an hour, Caspar believed that he had emerged victorious and began cheering in celebration to the raucous applause of the crowd. It is believed that due to this intense shouting, he was unable to hear the warnings given to him of the imminent threat that Rufus posed.

Panem stopped and took a horrified gasp as their so-thought "victor" had his trousers and undergarments ripped from him in one savage move, before he suffered perhaps one of the most painful deaths in the Games' history: a mace driven up his colon.

Rufus struggled to get it in further than the first few spikes, but after pushing with both hands, Caspar gave a haunting scream as his insides got torn apart. It is even rumoured that Rufus grinned and whispered something to Caspar near the end of this torturous ordeal before his victim passed out in shock, never to awaken.

Back in District 2, Rufus is said to have lived a relatively quiet life, at least one with no frisky mace adventures, before dying of old age sometime around the 70th Hunger Games
