The Hunger Games: Victors Retold

Inspired by The Victor’s Project by Oisin55 and Tales of the Hunger Games by Christian Blanco, The Hunger Games:Victors Retold tells the stories of all 75 victors of the Hunger Games, both canon and non-canon. Most chapters are around 500 words, which is perfect for any Hunger Games fans looking for a quick look into the archives of Panem.

11. Mags Flanagan

Mags Flanagan entered the Eleventh Hunger Games with a grin. Although tributes were told that the games would not take place in their usual venue this year, they were still unaware of what would lie before them in the arena and so it was hard for most tributes not to be taken aback by the incredible views on the island of Guapri.

Seabirds flew over the coastal cornucopia giving the illusion that the animals here were friendly, but an array of monsters including genetically mutated Komodo dragons lay waiting for them in the depths of the thick jungle.

When the timer reached zero, Mags leaped off her podium and towards the centre, which was the first to include supplies such as food and water. Tempted by this array of resources, almost all on the island chose to risk running in, and a fair few died at the hands of the District 2 boy, Andreas, and the District 1 girl, Irene.

Mags almost died herself, being attacked by the District 6 boy whilst she was drowning his district partner, however she was rescued by Andreas who brought his hammer down on the pair from six with no hesitation. Mags thanked Andreas for saving her life and then rejoined the rest of the group to organise supplies and begin hunting.

By night 5 and the tribute count still at 10, the Capitol began to grow bored with the lack of action and so triggered a devastating earthquake that killed Irene and her district partner when a tree fell on them as they slept. The rest of the careers ran to find shelter, but Mags tripped on debris and was separated from her alliance.

Trying to navigate her way back, she heard an intense rumbling coming from the south. Eventually, she realised that it was a tsunami and managed to scarper up a tree, safe from the wave.

The tsunami killed 3 tributes, most notably the girl from District 9 who had somehow slept through the entire event. In addition, the cave where the remaining three Career tributes took shelter turned out to be a Komodo dragon lair, and they were all devoured by the vicious creatures, much to the delight of Capitolians watching on from the city square.

Now, with just 4 tributes remaining, the Gamemakers decided to push them back towards the Cornucopia, and so began a wildfire that forced tributes to run back to where their Games began. Mags arrived last, witnessing the male from District 8 take out a tribute from 10, before being killed by the District 9 boy.

This final fight was once again disappointing to viewers, since Mags had such a level of expertise that the the boy from 9 was slain in a matter of minutes, leaving the career as the first female victor.

Mags was also the first victor to have a Victory Tour, where she travelled across Panem, giving speeches that honoured both her brilliant win and her fallen opponents. The girl from 4 was also said to be a brilliant mentor, who created strong bonds with all of her mentees despite not seeing most of them again. She was reaped for the 75th Hunger Games, where she died after sacrificing herself for Finnick Odair, Peeta Mellark, and Katniss Everdeen.
