The Gamemakers faced intense criticism after the events of the previous year's games, with Capitol spectators being disgusted by the effects of the horrible disease spread by mosquitos that killed thirteen tributes. Therefore, the setting for the Thirteenth Hunger Games, won by Dove Granwing of District 9, encouraged more tribute confrontations and less deaths from arena hazards.
These games took place in a wondrous mushroom village, with fifty-feet fungi scattered across the relatively small town which consisted of several houses surrounding a shallow lake, on which was the Cornucopia island.
Dove agreed to ally with the District 10 female, Gavina, as they had complementing strengths that they could use to help each other. Since Gavina was the faster of the pair, it was agreed that she would collect the majority of supplies whilst Dove only reached for a backpack that was near to her podium before heading north towards some of the smaller houses.
Dove had waited for almost three hours in the corner of some tiny bungalow before realising that Gavina wasn't going to arrive, and her face in the sky that night confirmed it. The girl from 9 then decided to search the house, for she knew that the few supplies that were in her backpack were not going to last long.
Although she found nothing of immediate use, she did come across a species of mushroom that released a sticky blue substance. She used this secretion to attach the knife that she managed to grab from the cornucopia to a plank of wood that she ripped out from the ceiling, constructing a makeshift spear that would be very helpful later on.
Meanwhile, the Careers had been busy decimating other tributes. The tiny arena combined with the obvious hiding spots in houses meant that by the end of the first day, there were only ten remaining, including the six in their group. For this reason, when the girl from District 2 noticed a mysterious gas being slowly emitted by the mushrooms near her alliance's camp, she collected their supplies and abandoned her night watch, leaving the rest of the Careers to be poisoned as they slept.
Dove was subsequently awakened by the last remaining career pinning her down and holding a knife to her throat. As she opened her mouth to beg for mercy, the District 2 girl punched her in the face, causing her to come to terms with the fact that she could be facing her last moments alive.
The girl from District 9 therefore had to think fast, as her spear was out of reach. A glimpse of electric blue flashed in her peripheral vision and she was reminded of what she had used to build her weapon. Using one hand to grab the knife and stop it from plunging into her throat, Dove lunged her other arm out to grab the mushroom and and smear it across the career's eyes.
This temporarily blinded her, allowing Dove to shove her spear into her abdomen, before grabbing her things and leaving the bungalow for the first time since the beginning of the games.
As Travis from District 6 was killed by Owen from 11, the final three tributes were manipulated by the mushroom spores to return back to the centre of the arena. Dove prevailed in this fight after skewering Owen and drowning the boy from District 7 in the village lake.
Despite remaining a friendly and likeable character for the rest of her life, Dove was simply unable to cope with the stress of being mentor and killed herself after the last of her tributes died in the Second Quarter Quell.
Victor 13: Dove Granwing, age 16, from District 9. Three kills.
