Fyan Hyssop of District Eleven was not a favourite to win, but had relatively high odds for a year that was mainly filled with skinny, whimpering teenagers. He was invited to join the Careers by the boy from District 4, Racuda, as he was one of the only other tributes that showed promise, but declined as a career had killed both of his district's competitors in the previous games.
Because of this, when the tributes were lifted into the volcanic crater arena, Racuda glared at him with an expression that could only mean one thing: Fyan was about to be murdered.
Extremely nervous and already sweating from the extreme heat, the seventeen-year-old chose to risk sprinting into the centre, hoping that the Careers would be distracted by weaker tributes. However, the 4 male was determined to kill him for declining his group's offer, grabbing a mace as he bolted towards the boy from 11. Fyan anticipated his attack, diving out of the way before charging at him with his kukri. Racuda was overwhelmed, suffering multiple blows to the torso, and was about to be finished off before one of his allies came to his aid. Fyan knew that he couldn't beat multiple careers and ran away, grabbing what supplies he could.
That night, six faces appeared in the sky, one of which being Racuda, who was killed by his alliance when they realised that his injuries were too severe for him to be anything more than a liability. Fyan meanwhile found a relatively sheltered place to spend the night, and was about to fall asleep when he heard the scream of his district partner, Blossom. He bolted up, seeing the girl from 6 chasing her, and ran towards the fight, tackling the attacker to the ground, easily overpowering her and slitting her throat. He then agreed to ally with Blossom, who promised that she would be useful. The duo returned to Fyan's spot, sharing a meal before resting.
After many days of the pair working together to find the little food and water that was spread across the arena, tributes were told that poisonous smoke would be released into the arena, and the only way to avoid this fate would be to claim one of the five pills that were placed at the cornucopia. Since only nine tributes were still standing, Fyan and Blossom knew that they had to be the first to reach them, as others would likely take what they needed and destroy the rest. To their horror, by the time that they arrived, the Careers had already taken the pills and were guarding the rest from others, including the unfortunate District 3 girl who was slaughtered when she ran into the District 1 male. The pair began panicking, knowing that they had no way of survival, until one by one the Careers dropped to the floor, dead. As the large group had fallen for the Capitol's trick and swallowed poison, only the duo from 11 and the boy from District 6 were left alive. The male from the transportation district suddenly dropped down from the cornucopia on top of Blossom, skewering her neck with his spear and charging at her district partner. With no time to react, Fyan found himself pinned by the boy as he laughed with glee at becoming his district's first victor. Despite this, the fight was not over, as the boy from 11 summoned all the strength he could muster and released himself from the boy's grip, gouging at his eyes before reaching for his kukri and slitting his neck.
Fyan, a rather irrelevant victor in the eyes of the Capitol, became good friends with Thorpe Teseos who had won two years prior, and worked with him to create underground training clubs for their districts' future tributes.
Victor 17: Fyan Hyssop, age 17, from District 11. Two kills.
