District 2 produced two phenomenal tributes to compete in the 18th Hunger Games, and despite earning yet another victory, citizens were unhappy with how things played out.
Amelia Evans was a prodigal swordswoman, mastering her technique before she even fully understood what the Hunger Games were. Even with all of this experience, she had still not managed to win a duel against her future district partner, Nile, and was determined to beat him once and for all in the games.
She emerged triumphant from a frosty garden arena that was plenty of resources (if tributes paid attention in training) but the extremely low temperatures would see the death of many tributes.
In the bloodbath, everything went to plan for Amelia's group, who acquired nine kills and a huge bounty of food, water, and shelter, which would become crucial for their survival later on. When the chaos was over, Nile instructed his district partner and the girl from 1 to stay and keep watch of the alliance's supplies at the cornucopia whilst he and the rest of the group ventured out to hunt down others. Although initially against this plan, Amelia reminded herself that she could be killed by one of her allies for disagreeing, so ended up complying and partaking in a rather boring activity.
Her boredom was quickly replaced with fear as huge chunks of ice started falling from the evening sky. She ran into the cornucopia, luckily before she was hit. The same could not be said for her ally from District 1, who limped into the horn with a severely mangled leg. Amelia saw the state of the girl and reached for her sword, and despite pleas for mercy, she was finished off. Six other cannons sounded, including the boys from 1 and 4 who were abandoned by Nile as he ran to safety. Even though the girl from 4 was left to die too, she was able to find safety under a tree, escaping the hailstorm with only minor injuries. Amelia was tempted to try and kill Nile when he arrived with an injured shoulder, but realised he would be more than strong enough to kill her with one arm, and so continued their alliance. Only five tributes were left standing by the time that night fell on the first night, which greatly annoyed Capitolians who were becoming used to more prolonged games
On the second day, the boy from 9 finally died of his injuries from the hail, and the girl from 5 perished from hypothermia in her sleep, leaving only the three Careers to battle in a particularly underwhelming Hunger Games. Amelia pounced on top of Nile, briefly pinning him before he gained the upper hand. The duo traded positions, each looking like they may win before Amelia was disarmed and Nile held his sword to her throat with a grin. He had pulled his weapon back halfway before he was kicked to the ground and repeatedly stabbed to death by the vengeful District 4 girl, who had returned from the bushes furious that she was abandoned. Even though his cannon fired, she continued driving her knife in and out of his dead and bloody body, allowing Amelia to use this distraction and slice through the girl's neck.
Despite having her throat partially slit, Amelia was able to win solely because she was lucky enough that her ally intervened before a major blood vessel was severed. Most of her district despised her for winning simply because the odds were in her favour, and so she refused her mentorship role, instead living alone in the Victor's Village until her body was found in her bathtub six years later. With no explanation for her death, the Capitol released a story that said she had died of alcohol poisoning, and nobody discovered the true cause of Amelia Evans' untimely fate.
Victor 18: Amelia Evans, age 16, from District 2. Two kills.
