The entire Spyro PS1 Trilogy is home to some of the most enjoyable and greatest moments, I have ever played from a Video Game and I have found a good 75% of the levels from Spyro 1-3 to be so enjoyable and unique that no matter how many times I go through finishing the level to 100%, I always find myself having a time where no two moments play out the same and just plain enjoyable to play through over and over again.
If there is however one Spyro level in the entire PS1 Trilogy where I found myself having an annoying and frustrating time getting through and not having fun with it of any kind, it would have to be Haunted Tomb from Spyro 3. Thanks in part due to the most annoying gameplay based elements and enemies appearing in Haunted Tomb from the entire Spyro series and with the Dragon Egg based mini-games to be very bland and forgettable for me to collect with compared to other levels in part to collect Dragon Eggs in from Spyro 3, causes me to rank Haunted Tomb dead last on the countdown.
The biggest problem I had with this level and why I hate it with a passion unlike hardly of the rest of the main PS1 Spyro Levels, is the main gameplay concept to defeat the enemies in the level and how to fully 100% complete the level. In order to defeat the stone earthshapper based rhynocs and collect the main treasure from the mummy coffins, is that you have to use snowball based rocks that randomly pop up in only a handful of places in the level and use them to destroy the main enemies in this level. It's annoying on the nerves that you are limited to not being able to use your charge and fire based attacks on the enemies in this level and only able to kill them via with the snowballs because in such the main enemies in the level are placed in one small group and causing one small mistake in your attack on the group of enemies to take out, can cause out doom for you. This problem is notable because it slows the main free action level design that the classic Spyro games are known for slowed down to an annoying stop.
Other annoying gameplay based elements abound in this level and can be too much to handle to enjoy from such as random falling rocks appearing at certain times in the level with you only given say maybe three seconds to jump across to another safety area from the falling rocks and so on and so forth. The award of the most grating enemies in the Spyro series, the Earthshappers are extremely annoying to battle through like I said earlier and could only be destroyed by snowballs and are immue to your fire and charge attacks and the fact that they are the ones that hold snowballs themselves and love to fire perfectly and kill your behind if you make one little screw up can be a pain in the you know what.
I even found the Dragon Egg based mini-games to be a big letdown and flat out boring to play through compared to some of the rest of the levels in Spyro 3. The hovercraft and Agent 9 based snake mini-games in the level, I found to feel to be very boring, forgettable and repetitive to play through and adding more to the nightmare pain I found overall going through from the level.
Overall, I found Haunted Tomb to be easily the biggest dud of a level from the Spyro PS1 games and has remained as a level that I always find to be nothing more then one of the very few disgraced bad moments to the Spyro 1-3 games. Moving on.
