Regina groaned as a blur of yellow and red stumbled it's way toward her. Emma Swan's bags threatened to tip every time she dodged another person in the busy airport. It almost always caused her to trip over her own feet. She was such a klutz. Regina cursed this trip for the hundredth time.
"Hey Gina. Ready to go?" Emma finally caught up to Regina. She silently damned the butterflies that erupted in her stomach at the nickname.
"Yes. Our plan is about to board. I didn't think you'd make it." She monotonously replied.
Emma shrugged. "You know me. I always said I'd be late to my own wedding." She laughed and Regina wondered if her eyes could fall out from rolling them too much.
"Don't I know." The brunette grumbled and turned to walk away.
They didn't speak again until they were in the air. She was too lost in her thoughts to speak. Nor did she want to speak to Emma.
However, the infuriating blonde couldn't pick up on a single social cue.
"I'm glad we're still going on this trip. Fun in the sun." She smiled as she bumped Regina's shoulder with her own. "You promised me you'd build a sandcastle with me."
This caught Regina off guard. She remembered making the promise, but didn't think it was valid given they had broken up. That makes promises null and void, right?
"I'm putting my headphones in." Was her only reply. She slipped her headphones but didn't turn anything on. She just liked having them in. Like a safety precaution, to use if Emma tried talking to her again.
Regina was bored out of her mind. They were only an hour into a 7 hour flight and she was going stir crazy. Her eyes drifted towards Emma. She was curled up in the seat, her nose stuck in a book.
The Shining. Regina smiled. It was one of their favorites. They bonded over their 'twisted taste in books' on their first date. What an easier time that was.
Regina didn't even know why they broke up. It had been a mutual decision. They never had time for each other. When they did manage to be home at the same time they were constantly fighting, though she couldn't recall a single topic form any of those fights. She frowned, trying to think if she could pinpoint when things went sour.
A pale hand pulling her own out of her mouth pulled her out of her thoughts. She had been chewing on her nails. A bad habit she was trying very hard to break. Regina muttered a thanks.
"Regina." Emma's voice was hesitant. She looked up to meet Emma's eyes.
"I know you don't care to be on this trip with me per se, but try to relax. You deserve it." Emma smiled. Why was she so annoyingly sweet.
"Thank you Emma." she found herself saying. That wasn't the response she had in mind at all, but those stupid dimples distracted her every time.
Emma held the book out to Regina. "Wanna read?" she wanted to refuse but If she didn't find something to do soon she was going to go insane. She took the book from Emma and started to read. The blonde almost immediately fell asleep.
Regina got lost in the pages of the book. She knew the story like the back of her hand but it still felt like she was reading it for the first time.
She was so into the book she didn't notice when Emma adjusted in her seat. She didn't even flinch when Emma's head found purchase one Regina's shoulder.
The flight has gone smoothly enough. Regina had been on worse, and Emma finally got the hint to leave her alone. She read the entirety of the book on the rest of the flight. She enjoyed reading Emma's annotations. It was like a peek inside the blonde's immature but beautiful mind.
Emma spent the rest of the flight watching movies, sleeping, or reading. Regina raised an eyebrow when Emma pulled a second book from the carry on. "What? You think I'm only gonna bring one book on vacation? I have enough for both of us." Emma had said so casually.
Sometimes Regina wondered if Emma knew they had broken up. Her love language was acts of service, and it made her wonder if Emma still loved her. They had only been broken up a few months, but people have gotten over three year relationships faster.
Regina pushed those thoughts away as they climbed into a taxi. Already she could feel her stress floating away. The sun was warm on her skin. She tilted her nose to the sky and closed her eyes. A wave of calm fell over her as she took a deep breath. The tilt of her lips in a smile was barely visible when she heard the sound of a shutter.
"Did you just take a picture of me!" She asked, not bothering to open her eyes.
"You looked so peaceful. I had to. You're beautiful." She could hear the smile in the other woman's voice. Against her brain's judgment, her own lips tilted up in a smile of her own.
They pulled up to the resort and Emma squealed. Regina rolled her eyes, but she understood. It was beautiful. Crystal clear water and not a cloud in the sky. She couldn't wait to dig her feet into the warm sand.
"Hi there! Welcome to Sanctuary Hotels in Cancun. What's the last name?" The receptionist asked as they approached.
"Mills, for two."
"Alright, perfect. Third floor to the right." The receptionist handed her the room keys. "Enjoy your stay.
The room was just as beautiful as she had imagined. The balcony overlooking the water was stunning. Emma immediately went to check out the bathroom, making a comment about how big the shower is.
That's when Regina spotted it. The bed. The one bed. She hadn't even thought to call and ask for a different room. Once she found out it was non refundable she tried to forget about it.
"What's wrong?" Emma stood at her side, also looking down at the one bed in the room.
"There's only one bed."
"We've slept in the same bed for close to three years, Regina. What's three more nights?" She shrugged as she said it, like it wasn't weird sleeping in bed with your ex girlfriend on a romantic couples vacation in paradise.
She groaned inwardly and took a deep breath. "I want a shower and a nap. Then maybe we can get dinner or something."
"Why, Ms. Mills, are you asking me on a date?" She raised her eyebrows. Regina felt her face flush.
"We paid for all inclusive."
"It's a date." Emma muttered under her breath when Regina turned away.
She rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile that formed on her face. Good god, this weekend was going to be torture.
Regina's breath caught in her throat as Emma leaned in. Before she knew what was happening their lips brushed. Regina hadn't felt Emma lips in months. It was a feeling she knew she missed but wouldn't let herself admit. Feeling Emma's mouth moving softly against hers she had no choice but to concede. She pressed their lips together harder, savoring the taste of cinnamon coffee that Emma drank every morning.
"Regina." Emma sighed into their kiss.
"Emma." Regina moaned in response.
"Regina?" Emma repeated. Her voice was different this time. A regular talking voice rather than a breathy whisper. Regina opened her eyes to see the blonde standing over her. It took a moment of looking around for Regina to realize what happened.
Her face flushed, and Emma's concerned face twisted into one of humor. "Having good dreams?" She smirked.
"Shut up." Regina groaned and rolled over to hide her face. The truth was yes. It had been a very good dream. She cursed herself for being caught. Hopefully Emma would let it go.
