Maria's POV

Maria barely slept last night, all she could think about was a sea captain and 7 children and wondering why he had difficulties keeping a governess. Maria thought he must bark orders at the others and now I'm next.

While Maria was eating breakfast, sister Berthe started walking towards her with a serious expression on. Maria bent down, sister Berthe said "You don't have to kiss the floor Maria, the mother superior wants you to go to her office before you leave".

Maria said "Yes sister" and continued eating.

Well, Maria made it to Vespers on time. Maria got to the reverend mother's office and she gave Maria an ugly grey dress to wear. Before Maria left reverend mother said "God bless you my child" and Maria left.

After Maria closed the gates, Maria said "When the Lord closes a door somewhere he opens a window" and walked away singing.

What will this day be like

I wonder

It could be so exciting

To be out in the world to be free

My heart should be wildly rejoicing

Oh what's the matter with me

I've always longed for adventure

To do the things I've never dared

Now here I'm facing adventure

Then why am I so scared

A captain with seven children

What's so fearsome about that

Oh I must stop all these doubts all these worries

If I don't, I just know I'll turn back

I must dream of the things I am seeking

I am seeking the courage I lack

The courage to serve then with reliance

Face my mistakes without defiance

Show them I'm worthy

And while I show them I'll show me

So let them bring on all their problems

I'll do better then my best

I have confidence they'll put me to the test

But I'll make them see I have confidence in me

Somehow I will impress them

I'll be firm but kind

And all those children Heaven bless them

They will look up to me

And mine me with each step I am more certain

Everything will turn out fine

I have confidence the world can all be mine

They'll have to agree I have confidence in me

I have confidence in sunshine

I have confidence in rain

I have confidence that spring will come again

Besides which you see I have confidence in me

Strength doesn't lie in numbers

Strength doesn't lie in wealth

Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumbers

When you wake up wake up

It tells all I trust to lead my heart to

All I trust becomes my own

I have confidence and confidence alone

Oh help

I have confidence and confidence alone

Besides which you see I have confidence in me

Maria rang the doorbell out of breath. A balding man answered. Maria said "Here I am captain".

The man had a confused and skeptical expression. Maria said "I'm from the convent I'm the new governess captain".

The man said "And I'm the butler".

Maria said "Well how do you do" and shook his hand.

The man said "Come in".

When Maria walked in, the man said "Wait here please" and left. As usual Maria's curiosity got the better of her and began exploring.

Georg's POV

Georg was in his study reading the morning newspaper when the phone rang. Georg picked it up and said "Good afternoon".

Elsa said "Georg darling, I wanted to make sure you're still coming to Vienna tomorrow".

Georg said "Yes I am".

Elsa said "And stay for at least a week".

Georg said "I will try darling".

Elsa said "Good because on Saturday Erik Beelek is throwing a party for his new baroness".

Georg thought I hate parties. Georg said "I will see you tomorrow".

Elsa said "Auf Wiedersehen darling".

Georg said "Auf Wiedersehen" and hung up.

Georg said "Come in" after he heard a knock.

Franz walked in and said "The new governess is here sir".

Georg did notice is butler wasn't too keen about this one. Georg said "Send her in".

Franz said "Yes sir" and left.

Franz returned with a flushed Maria. Georg was shocked by the sight of Maria. Georg thought young, slim and beautiful nothing like the plump, average looking and older ones. It'd be a sin to leave me alone with her. But it was too late, Franz just left. What pulled Georg from his thought was when he caught her looking at him strange. Georg asked "And why are you looking at me like that?"

Maria said "Well you don't look the slightest bit like a sea captain sir".

Which left Georg surprised and wondering What does a sea captain look like? Georg said "Well I'm afraid you don't look like a governess". Georg mainly said that to himself then to Maria.

Georg said "Turn around please".

Maria asked "What?"

Georg said "Turn around".

Maria turned around but made sure to keep one eye on him because of her curiosity of him not looking like a sea captain, meanwhile Georg was looking for something of her that would look more like the other governess but found nothing.

Georg said "Hat off".

Maria quickly took off her hat and at that moment Georg wished she'd put it back on because he found her golden blonde hair alluring. Georg said "It's the dress, you'll need to put on a different one before you meet my children".

Maria said "But I don't have another one, when we enter the abbey, our worldly possession are given to the poor".

Georg thought It's probably better for you to wear that ugly dress. But even with that thought Georg wondered how she'd look with a pretty dress on. Georg asked "And what about this dress?"

Maria said "The poor didn't want it".

Georg hoping after a while of seeing her in that dress would find her less alluring but at the same time annoyed that a girl so beautiful could wear a dress like that. Georg thought That dress is probably uglier than it actually looks. Maria noticing the captain's confused look, quickly said "I would've made myself another dress but there wasn't enough time. I can make my own clothes".

Georg said "Then you'll get some material today hopefully".

Georg said "Now fraulien uh-".

Maria said "Maria".

Georg said "Maria" trying to memorize her name.

Georg continued "I don't know what the mother abbess told you and what she didn't".

Maria said "Just that you have seven children and have difficulties keeping a governess".

Georg said "Now you happen to be the 12th governess to look after my children since their mother died, I hope you'll be an improvement on the last one she stayed only 5 hours".

Maria asked "What's wrong with your children sir?"

Georg was surprised by this question cause no other governess or anyone ever questioned or thought of questioning him. Georg said "Nothing just the governesses".

Maria said "Oh".

Georg found the way she said "Oh" unquestionably and undeniably cute. Georg continued "They had no idea what they were doing and how to maintain discipline. And discipline is very important in this house will you please remember that fraulien".

Maria said "Yes sir".

Georg said "Every morning you will help them through their studies and I will not allow them to spend their summer holidays dreaming each and every afternoon they will march breathing deeply and bedtime is strictly observed no exceptions-".

Maria said "Excuse me sir. But when do they play?"

Georg said "You will see that they conduct themselves maturely. I'm placing you in command".

Maria said "Yes sir" and did a salute. Which Georg was surprised and intrigued by that.

Georg said "Now it's time to meet the children. Follow me" and they walked out his study.

Author's note. I always wondered where the captain was and what he was doing when Maria arrived so, I just used my imagination and I apologize for putting this in the middle of a chapter.

Maria's POV

Maria followed the captain to the main room where she just admired a room moments before she met him. Maria saw the large gold doors and opened them. As quickly as they opened was as quick as they were closed by the captain. The captain said "In the future I kindly advise you to know that this door is to never be open".

Maria said "Yes captain sir". Maria wasn't listening to him; she was lost in her own thoughts as to where the children are. The captain blew a whistle. Maria ran to a desk behind the captain after she heard a herd of rhinos above her.

Maria looked up and saw children and began counting them. Maria thought it was weird she only counted 6 when the reverend mother told her 7 and the reverend mother a never wrong. When they were all lined up, another child emerged from a door reading a book. The girl got in a straight line with her brothers and sister. The captain said "Now children this is your governess fraulien Maria. When you hear your signal step forward and say your name and then return to your place you fraulien listen careful so, you can learn their signals and call them when you want them" and blew his whistle.

Child #1 "Liesl".

Child #2 "Frederich".

Child #3 "Louisa".

Child #4 "Kurt".

Child #5 "Brigitta".

Child #6 "Marta".

The last child and clearly the youngest didn't say anything. The captain looked a little embarrassed and said "That's Gretl... Now fraulien let's see how well you listened" and held a whistle out.

Maria said "Oh I won't have to whistle for them captain. What I mean is I'll use their names they've all got such lovely names".

The captain was obviously surprised by that comment and said "Fraulien this is a large house and I will not have anyone shouting. You will take this and learn to use it".

The captain saw Maria hesitate and said "The children will help you". Little did he know Maria was thinking that whistle will be the first thing to go. Maria took the whistle and put it in her pocket.

The captain said "Now when I want you this is what you will hear" and started whistling.

Maria thought that's the last straw. Maria said "No sir".

Maria raised her voice "I'm sorry sir!"

Finally, the captain heard her and had that same surprised look, Maria finds entrancing. Maria said "I would never stoop so low as to answer to a whistle, whistles are for dogs and other animals but not for children and definitely not for me that's just absurd".

The captain asked "Fraulien were you this difficult at the abbey".

Maria said "Oh much more sir, you should here what the sisters say about me". Kurt looked like he was going to laugh until the captain silenced him with a look.

The captain said "Thought so" and started to walk away.

Maria blew her whistle and said "Excuse me you haven't told me your signal".

The captain was surprised and annoyed Maria thought he had a signal. The captain said "You will call me captain" and walked away.

When she was sure the captain was out of ears reach, Maria said "Your father's gone you can relax". The children just widen their stance but still stiff.

Maria mumbled "We've got a long way to go".

Maria said "Well that's a start. Now could you please tell your names again and how old you are?"

Liesl said "I'm Liesl, I'm 16 and I really don't need a governess".

Maria said "Okay we can be friends".

Frederich said "I'm Frederich, I'm 14 and despite my age I am a man".

Maria said "That's good".

Louisa said "I'm Brigitta".

Maria said "You haven't told me how old you are Louisa".

Brigitta said "I'm Brigitta, she's Louisa, she's 13 and your different and I'm 10 and your dress is hideous".

Kurt said "Brigitta that's not very nice".

Brigitta said "Well don't you think it's hideous?"

Kurt said "Yes but I wouldn't say it to her face. - I'm Kurt, I'm 11 and I'm courageous".

Maria said "Good for you".

Kurt asked "What's courageous?"

Maria said "It means you have a lot of courage".

Marta said "I'm Marta and I'll be 7 on Wednesday and I'd like a pink dress for my barbie doll".

Maria said "Pink's my favorite color also".

Marta just smiled. The youngest of all stomped her foot. I said "Yes you're Gretl". Gretl held her hand up.

Maria said "And you're 5 my you're practically a lady".

Maria said "Now I have to tell you something, I've never been a governess before".

Brigitta said "You mean you don't know anything like how to start".

Maria said "Nope, I'll need lots of advice".

Liesl said "We'll help you. Wont we?" The children nodded.

Frederich said "You must always come to dinner 30 minutes late because that's when we actually eat".

Kurt said "You must wake us up at 10".

Liesl said "And our bed time is at 11".

Louisa said "Always tell father to shut up when he rambles on because he doesn't realize he's doing it".

Gretl said "Don't you listen to a word they say fraulien Maria".

Maria asked "Well why not?"

Gretl said "Because you're pretty and I like you".

A woman walked in and said "Okay children outside for your walk" and ushered they kids outside.

The woman said "Fraulien Maria, I'm Frau Schmidt the housekeeper, I'll show you to your room".

Maria thought Polite and very different than the captain. Frau Schmidt picked up her carpet bag and Maria picked up her guitar case. On their way upstairs, Maria realized the children were still standing by the door like they were waiting for something.

When Maria was half way up the stairs, she screamed and took a toad out of her pocket while the children had innocent looks. Frau Schmidt said "You're lucky the last governess found a rat and fraulien Helga found a snake".

Maria was official scared but knew God sent her here and she'd never let God down just like he's never let her down.

Georg's POV

Georg was in his study talking to Max. Georg said "I don't recall inviting you Max".

Max said "As their godfather I am automatically invited to see them any time I please besides you and Elsa need a chaperone while I seek talent".

Georg said "There are plenty of hotels close to the house".

Max said "Whose cook doesn't have a cuisine half as delicious as your cook".

Georg grunted. Max said "Well that's settled".

Georg said "Fine" and hung up.

Georg sat in his black leather chair lost in thought about Maria. A knock at the door brought Georg back to reality. Georg said "Come in".

Frau Schmidt walked in and said "Dinner is in 10 minutes sir".

Georg said "Thank you" and Frau Schmidt left.

Georg sat down and thought I've been sitting here for 30 minutes with nothing but that fraulien on my mind. Georg stop this. Georg went upstairs to get ready.

On Georg's way downstairs, Georg felt a need to go to the children's room to check. Georg walked pass all the children's room and straight to fraulien's room. Georg was about to leave when he heard fraulien asked "Am I here to help the captain or the children?"

Georg realized the door was ajar and pushed it a little more open to reveal that golden hair Georg found so alluring. Georg thought Snap out of it Georg! Since when do you spy on your governess!

When Georg got to the dining area, the children said "Good evening father".

Georg said "Good evening children" and sat down.

Georg said "Frau Schmidt go remind fraulien Maria it's dinner time".

Frau Schmidt said "Yes sir" and left.

About 20 minutes later fraulien was downstairs out of breath which Georg also thought was cute. Fraulien said "Good evening captain" but Georg was in his own thought mainly about her wearing the same dress.

Fraulien said "Good evening children".

The children said "Good evening fraulien Maria".

When fraulien Maria sat down she yelped. Georg also found this amusing and attractive. Georg thought Could you get any cuter. Georg knew about his children's pranks and he wasn't sure why or what made him say "Is that something you learned at the abbey?"

Maria said "Oh um it's rheumatism". Georg thought lying to me about my children's pranks that's a first. The children sighed in relief.

Georg was staring at Maria trying to figure her out when unexpectedly Maria looked up. Georg thought Do something! Georg smiled and Maria smiled back and the children mainly Brigitta and Liesl were looking back and forth.

Maria said "Captain haven't we forgotten to thank the lord".

Georg rolled his eyes and put his utensil down and the children followed. Maria said "Heavenly father for what we're about to receive let us be truly thankful. Amen".

Georg said "Amen".

The children said "Amen" and they began to eat.

Maria said "I would like to thank you children for the precious gift you left in my pocket and in my room earlier today".

Georg asked "What gift exactly?"

Maria said "Oh it's a secret between the children and I".

Georg said "Then keep it and let us eat".

Maria said "Knowing how nervous, I must've been to come and stay with new people it was so kind and thoughtful to make me feel excepted and welcomed".

Georg was surprised by Maria once more and when Maria caught him looking at her, Georg smiled and Maria smiled back. Georg asked "What is the matter, Marta?"

Marta said "Nothing father" and kept crying.

Soon the other children started crying. Georg thought I could almost believe the children gave her something special if Maria didn't have a smile tugging at her lips. Georg said "Fraulien is it at every meal or just dinner do you intend to cause mayhem?"

Maria said "Oh I was simply thanking them for the gift they gave me don't worry about them crying they're just happy they were able to make me feel welcomed". Chocolate cake was served for desert after all the crying.

Franz walked over and said "A telegram for you sir".

Georg said "Thank you".

Liesl asked "Franz who delivered it?"

Franz said "Who else but Rolfe?"

Liesl smiled and asked "Father may I be excused". Though Georg was already in his own thoughts and wonders about Maria and didn't hear her. Maria on the other hand was observing and saw Liesl sneak away.

Georg said "Now children tomorrow I will be going to Vienna".

Frederich said "Not again father".

Brigitta said "You just got back".

Louisa said "Are you visiting the baroness again?"

Frederich said "Mind your business Louisa".

Georg said "Yes I am going to visit the baroness".

Gretl asked "How long will you be gone this time father?"

Georg said "I don't know Gretl, I don't know".

Brigitta asked "How come we don't get to me the baroness?"

Kurt asked "Why would she come from Vienna just to meet you?"

Georg said "Well you all will meet the baroness; I'm bringing her back with me to meet all of you along with uncle Max".

The children excitedly said "Uncle Max!"

After that unusual dinner Georg went in his study.

Georg's POV

After Georg's conversation with the manager of Mr. Bloch's Material, Georg left his study. Georg said "Franz".

Franz said "Yes sir".

Georg said "Bring the car around".

Franz said "Yes sir" and left.

Georg said "Frau Schmidt".

Frau Schmidt said "Yes sir".

Georg said "I have to take care of something before I leave tomorrow".

Frau Schmidt said "Yes sir" and I left.

Georg parked across the street and walked in the store. Johann said "Well it's captain von Trapp what do I owe the pleasure".

Georg said "Just some material".

Johann said "So you finally decided to get your children out of strait jackets".

Georg said "No".

Johann said "What a shame we've got lovely material. So, who's the material for?"

Georg said "Just my governess".

Johann said "Well that's a first. So, which one is this?"

Georg said "The twelfth".

Johann said "Well I don't blame them for scaring their governess I did the same thing because my father loved to stay away and it felt like he was avoiding me because I reminded him of my mother". Georg didn't know what but something about what Johann said sounded familiar.

Georg said "Well hopefully this one can handle more than the other ones".

Johann asked "So why are you buying your governess material?"

Georg said "So, she can dress more appropriate for my household".

Johann said "Good Lod what was she wearing!? A shirt that says "Heil Hitler" across the front".

Georg said "If she was, she wouldn't be my governess, she walked in with a hideous dress and if I ever see it again it won't be pretty".

Johann said "Well buy as much as you like it's a sale buy 2 get 1 free".

Georg began looking around and choosing material that brought Maria back to his mind. 1 blue one caught his eye, Georg thought as blue as her eyes. Johann asked "You alright captain von Trapp you've been staring at that material for 20 minutes?"

Georg said "Sorry" and picked up brown, orange, pink, green, royal blue, baby blue, purple, yellow, white, black and a cream color material.

Georg got to the register but a silky looking sparkly sky-blue material caught his eyes. Georg thought That would bring out the blue in her eyes. Georg asked "How much is that material?"

Johann said "Same sale".

Georg said "I'll just take the blue one".

Johann said "It's the same sale".

Georg asked "How much is it by itself".

Johann said "$22.00 for 2 feet".

Georg thought I have to see her in that color. Georg said "Alright" and put the rest of the material to be tied up with strings.

Johann said "That'll be $48.00 and throw in a tip".

Georg asked "Business not too good?"

Johann said "No business is great but it couldn't hurt".

Georg rolled his eyes and gave a $ 10 tip and left.

When Georg arrived home, Georg said "Frau Schmidt".

Frau Schmidt said "Yes sir?"

Georg said "Give these to fraulien and tell her to burn that dress".

Frau Schmidt said "Yes sir" and started walking upstairs.

Georg went back to his study to clear his head.

Maria's POV

After dinner Maria went to her room to relax her mind and think about what the children want and what they don't, for example the children didn't seem to like it when their father left and he seems to do that a lot and whoever this uncle Max is the children were happy he was coming and obviously the captain has been seeing the baroness for a while.

Maria put all the children to bed except Liesl because Maria couldn't find her but Maria knew that delivery boy had something to do with it. Maria went over to clothes the window when she saw Liesl dancing with who could only be Rolfe. A knock on the door startled Maria. Maria said "Come in".

Frau Schmidt walked in and said "Good evening fraulien Maria".

Maria said "Good evening frau Schmidt".

Frau Schmidt said "These are for you the captain got these from town".

Maria said "Wow I'm sure these'll make the prettiest clothes I've ever seen... Tell me frau Schmidt do you think the captain would get me some more material if I asked?"

Frau Schmidt asked "More? How many dressed do you need?"

Maria said "Not for me, for the children, I want to make them something they could play in".

Frau Schmidt said "The children don't play, they march".

Maria said "Well I'm sure you don't agree".

Frau Schmidt said "It's not my place to say. Ever since the captain lost Agathe he runs this house as if he were on one of his ships again, whistles and orders, he banned anyone from doing anything that reminds him of her".

Maria said "But that's just wrong".

Frau Schmidt said "It is what it is". Maria thought not for long.

Frau Schmidt asked "How do you like your room?"

Maria said "It's lovely". Maria thought though frau Schmidt made it herself.

Frau Schmidt said "Tomorrow you'll have new drapes".

Maria said "New drapes? But these are fine".

Frau Schmidt said "New ones have already been ordered".

Maria said "But I really don't need them".

Frau Schmidt said "I suggest you don't question anything the captain does, good night fraulien".

Maria asked "Do you think if I asked the captain tomorrow about material?"

Frau Schmidt said "Well he's leaving in the morning".

Maria said "Oh right. How long will he be gone?"

Frau Schmidt said "Well I don't know the last time he visited the baroness he stayed for almost a month, sometimes I think the captain tries to stay away from the children because they all remind him of Agathe. I shouldn't be telling you this, I mean I don't know all that well but if you ask me, I'd say the captain is thinking of marrying the baroness before the year's over".

Maria said "That would be wonderful the children will have a mother again".

Frau Schmidt said "Good night".

I said "Good night" and closed the door.

Maria kneeled down by her bed and said "Dear father now I know why you've sent me here, to prepare these children for a new mother and I pray she will love as they were her own and that the children won't put leaves on her bed or a toad in her pocket or crickets in her room. I pray this shall be a happy family. God bless the reverend mother and everyone at Nonberg abbey, God bless the captain, Liesl, Louisa, Kurt Brigitta, Marta and Gretl. What's the other boy's name well God bless what's his name".

Meanwhile Liesl was sneaking through Maria's window. Maria said "Now dear God what about Liesl".

Liesl said "Please don't tell on me".

Maria said "Shh. - Help her to know that I'm her friend and give her the courage to tell me what she's been up to and help me to earn her trust so I can guide her footsteps. In the name of the father, the son and the Holy ghost. Amen".

Liesl said "I went out to get some air and someone locked the doors earlier than usual and I didn't want to wake everyone up and I saw your window open so I- You're not telling father, are you?".

Maria walked over to the window to close it but realized how high she was. Maria asked "How on earth did you climb up here?"

Liesl said "That's how we always got in this room to play tricks on the governess. Louisa can make it with a jar filled with spiders".

Maria turned around and said "Spiders!"

Liesl seemed to be oblivion to Maria's shocked expression and voice. Liesl said "Or crickets or beetles".

Maria asked "Were you out there all by yourself". Liesl nodded.

Maria asked "Are you sure?"

Liesl said "Yes".

Maria said "So you going out for air has nothing to do with a delivery boy – Rolfe I think Franz said his name was".

Liesl said "Please don't tell father".

Maria saw this as an opportunity to bond and possibly earn Liesl's trust. Maria said "You know if we put that to soak in the bathtub nobody would miss it or notice it tomorrow. You can put this own" and gave Liesl a night gown.

Liesl said "I still don't need a governess but it wouldn't hurt to have a friend I didn't have to sneak to meet" and went in the bathroom.

Maria was a bit on edge and started checking her bed for anymore bugs. Maria's door burst open to reveal Gretl. Maria asked "Gretl are you frightened?" Gretl shook her head. Lightning mad an appearance and Gretl ran to Maria.

Maria said "Well you can stay right here with me" and put Gretl on the bed.

Maria asked "Where are your brothers and sisters?"

Gretl said "Asleep they don't get scared". Gretl held on tighter when the thunder got louder.

2 girls were standing in the doorway. Maria said "Look Gretl. - Alright up here on the bed".

Brigitta said "Really?"

Maria said "Well it couldn't hurt if it's only once" and they got on the bed.

Maria said "Now all we have to do is wait for your sister and the boys".

Gretl said "But boys are brave".

Maria said "Being brave doesn't mean you're not afraid of anything, being brave means facing your fears".

Kurt ran in here, the girls laughed. Maria said "Kurt you weren't scared as well?"

Kurt said "Oh no not me I just wanted to make sure you girls were alright".

Maria said "That's very sweet of you Kurt".

Kurt said "It wasn't my idea, Frederich sent me".

Maria said "He's the one I left out. God bless Frederich". Thunder struck again and Kurt jumped on the bed next to Brigitta.

Brigitta's POV

Sleep never came easy to Brigitta when there was a thunderstorm. Louisa was sleeping across the room like a baby. The door opened a little to reveal Marta. Marta said "I'm scared".

Brigitta asked "Did you tell Liesl?"

Marta said "I can't find her". Thunder struck and Brigitta went under my covers and Brigitta felt her bed move which meant Marta got on.

When thunder struck again, Marta and I ran to fraulien Maria's room where we found Gretl. Fraulien Maria let us stay and soon after Kurt ran in. Marta asked "Why is it scaring us?"

Maria said "Well it isn't trying to; the lightning says something to the thunder and that noise you hear is just the thunder answering back".

Gretl asked "Why is the lightning making the thunder angry?"

Maria said "I don't know sweetheart".

Gretl said "I wish it would stop".

Marta said "The lightning must be mean it makes me want to cry".

Maria said "Well whenever something's bothering me or making me sad, I just try to think of nice things".

Brigitta asked "What kind of things?"
Maria said "Let's see, nice things, flowers, mountain, a night sky filled with stars and raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens".

(Fraulien)

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings

These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels

Doorbells and sleighbells and schnitzel with noodles

Wild geese that fly with the moon in their wings

These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dressed with blue satin sashes

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

Silver white winters that melt into springs

These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad

Gretl asked "Does it really work?"

Maria said "Of course you try it. What things do you like?"

Gretl said "Ladybugs".

Marta said "Pink dresses".

Brigitta said "Chocolate".

Kurt said "Pancakes".

Marta said "Kittens".

Kurt said "Snakes".

Brigitta said "Christmas".

Maria said "See what fun it is".

Marta said "Bunny rabbits".

Kurt said "No school".

Gretl said "Kites".

Kurt said "Pillow fights".

Liesl walked in and said "Telegrams".

Kurt said "A good sneeze".

Maria said "See".

Maria's POV

One look at the captain and Maria new she was in trouble. Maria said "Hello". Maria thought Maybe that will lighten the mood.

The captain was having thoughts of his own like how cute Maria is right now. Is she always cute when she gets caught breaking a rule? Focus Georg. The captain said "Fraulien did I not tell you bed time is at 8".

Maria said "Well the children were frightened by the storm so, I thought- yes sir you did".

The captain said "And do you have problems remembering something so simple?"
Maria had a mischievous look and said "Only when it's raining sir".

Kurt laughed but one look from the captain and he was silence. Maria thought don't let him intimidate you, Maria. The captain said "Liesl!"

Liesl said "Uh yes father".

The captain said "I don't recall seeing you after dinner".

Liesl said "Really well I was just I just-".

The captain said "Yes".

Maria thought please say something. Liesl said "I was, was I-". Maria than realized Liesl was pleading for Maria to help her.

Maria said "What she's trying to say captain is that we've been getting to know each other better-but it's too late to go into all of that- come on children you heard your father go back to bed right away".

As the children ran out, Liesl gave Maria a grateful smile which didn't go unnoticed to the captain. The captain said "Fraulien did you possibly remember that I'm leaving tomorrow morning?" Maria nodded.

The captain said "And is it possible that you remembered the first rule in this house is discipline". Maria nodded again.

The captain said "And I hope before I return you will have some". Maria nodded as the captain started walking towards the door.

Maria said "Captain". Louder than necessary or she intended but it got the captain's attention.

The captain said "Yes". Maria thought why is this man always so serious?

Maria said "I wondered that before you go if I could talk to you".

The captain said "About?"

Maria said "About clothes for the children-".

The captain said "Fraulien Maria-".

Maria said "I'll only need a little bit of material".

The captain said "Fraulien! I hate repeating myself and I've already given you my answer".

Maria said "But they're children!"

The captain said "I know my children good night" and left with his mind filled with emotions.

Maria plopped down on her bed and thought That man is insufferable. The curtain caught her eye.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad
