Day 1. Festival
There was one good side to taking Inuyasha to a festival - in his customary clothing he looked like any other festival goer. Even his hair and ears raised no eyebrow, all with the multitude of people wearing fox or oni masks.
Dressed in a pretty yukata adorned with summer flowers, Kagome walked beside the boy and smiled to herself, congratulating herself on coming up with the idea of taking him to a festival this weekend. Past weeks had been so stressful and there had been little time to just spend time together, doing some fun stuff.
It was almost like a date. They were enjoying themselves. They listened to music, played a few games, sampled some food and wandered streets lit by lamps. And, the best part, she had already picked the best spot for viewing the fireworks that were going to start in a few minutes. A true nice date.
Okay, so maybe she had wrestled him into wearing zori And she had brushed out his hair for him in a bit of a hurry, pulling at some knots. And she had made him leave his sword behind at home.
And now he was surrounded by an untold number of strangers brushing past him. He had almost burnt his tongue with a bit too spicy rice ball. And his adorable ears were pinned against his head most of the time when they passed noisier areas. He looked around, half curious and half wary.
Kagome looked up at the sky where the light pollution blocked out the stars.
The fireworks were going to be spectacular. Flowers of light exploding in the night sky over the city.
Kagome glanced at Inuyasha, who was observing the crowds moving to get to their chosen viewing spots. He looked a bit lost.
"Here," she grabbed his wrist and tugged him to an allety between stalls where there was less chance of someone seeing them.
"Huh?"
"We're going home," she declared. The boy blinked.
"But you said there was something you wanted to show me. It's almost time for it, we can wait and then go.
She shook her head. Sure, he had had fun during the evening, just like Kagomeshe. Spending time together, incognito among the crowds too occupied with their own fun to notice anything, it was a wonderful change from chasing youkai and taking make up tests. Still, he stood tense next to her and seemed tired of the overexposure to modern times and people.
"We can see that from the Sacred Tree. Take me there. Now," she demanded and gave him her best puppy gaze. There was no time for being subtle about it.
"Okay…" he said somewhat hesitant. As he crouched for her to climb onto his back he added in an uncertain voice. "It wasn't something I did?"
"No," she assured him and wrapped her arms around his neck. Doggy-back rides in yukata weren't too comfy, it seemed. "Now go, before it starts!"
"Sure, sure," there was relief in his gruff voice when he leaped up and swiftly reached the rooftops, unseen by the crowds. Fast like a shadow he ran across the city block to where her home and the Sacred Tree was. Kagome looked down at the city in wonder, admiring the play of lights and shadows, but then she was set on a thick branch of the Sacred Tree, her hanyou next to her and looking at her quizzically. She felt bad for putting him through so much, even if he had have some nice time too. She hadn't asked him if he had wanted to go in the first place, jist had dragged him out of the safety of the shrine grounds.
"Now, what's this all about?" he demanded when she remained silent. She smiled up at him/
"Look to the sky over where we had been," she pointed towards that direction and when he did she reached out her hands and cupped her palms over the twitching ears on top of his head.
That meant that she was facing away from the area and couldn't see the fireworks. But it was fine.
She could see flowers of light reflected in the widened golden eyes of her protector when she protected his adorable, oversensitive ears.
