AN: Hello fanfic readers. The Star Guardian Universe has been my favorite universe ever since Burning Bright, but it was Kai and Akali that had me fall in love with it. I adore these two, and I want to give them a continuation of their story that can satisfy the heart. I hope I am able to stir the emotions in you all that their story had stirred in me.
I would also like to say that not everything will be 100% referenced how it happened in Another Sky. I do not feel as though the writers took everything serious. So if you see any continuity errors it's probably intentional xD.
I have no idea how many chapters I will write, but I am hoping to do this for a while. Please enjoy 3
Kai'sa was layed on her back, pink eyes staring into the sky above, clouds streaking across a canvas of blue. Summer was her favorite time of year, with flowers blossoming, the birds singing, you could almost forget the city was nearly destroyed only a few months ago. She didn't understand how so many people could just move on so quickly. Act as if nothing has changed. But perhaps for them, it is not the same. After taking the oath with her best friend, she soon realized that any future other than fighting could be lifetimes away. But perhaps one day, together, they would finally be safe.
"Kai?" a soft voice called out from beside her, a girl with blue hair and sharp features.
"Yeah?" Kai answered, her head tilting to the side ever so slightly to look at her, strands of pink hair falling across her eyes. Her hand held onto Akali's lightly, their fingers dancing with one another seemingly on their own, the charms of their bracelets glinting in the rays of the setting sun.
"Can we just... Stay here? Forever?" Akali asked before she turned to look at Kai as well, with purple eyes which Kai could quickly lose herself in.
Kai was quiet at first, a smile creeping onto her lips as the idea did sound tempting. Part of her wished for the same, just to return to how things were. No monsters, no impending doom. Just life, homework, sports, shopping, Akali... She had the power to protect her now. To protect everyone, it had to be worth it.
"We could... But could you really give up Noodle Bill's breakfast ramen?" Kai countered, trying to make light of the situation they were both in.
Akali snorted in amusement, her trademarked lopsided smirk curling onto her lips, "Yeah, true. So maybe we can leave here for Noodle Bills. Only exception!" Akali said as she looked back up into the sky, each of them letting out a quiet bout of laughter.
Akali slipped her phone out of her school jacket with her free hand to check the time, which quickly caused her high spirits to fade away, "I... I should be heading home." she said softly, the muscles in her jaw tensing, as well as her grip on Kai's hand strengthening.
Kai frowned as she continued to rest her eyes on Akali. She knew that Akali's homelife had only gotten worse recently. It was frustrating, knowing she had the power to protect her best friend from monsters from other worlds. But she could not protect Akali from this.
"I'll walk you home." Kai offered, sitting herself up next to Akali.
"Thanks, Kai." Akali answered before reluctantly letting her hand slip out of Kai's. She slipped the strap of her backpack over her shoulder and then got up. Kai picked up her school book, and the two set off.
"So... You gonna tell me what it is that's botherin' you, Kai? Don't even try and hide it. I see right through that facade of yours." Akali asked to break the silence of the walk.
"Facade? A fancy word for you, 'Kali." Kai said in an attempt to deflect from the subject, she glanced over to Akali in hopes of seeing that smirk one more time, but her expression was deadpan.
"Kai. I'm serious... You p-" Akali was then abruptly interrupted.
"I'm having nightmares." she blurted out, then took a deep breath as she stared ahead. They were walking rather slowly; neither Kai nor Akali was in a rush to get to Akali's house.
Akali didn't look away and leaned in towards Kai as they walked, slipping a hand underneath Kai's arm as she hugged her book to her chest.
"What kind of nightmares? Like... Of the attack?" she asked, her brows furrowed. They both got distracted for a second as the street lights flickered on. The sun had nearly fallen down past the horizon.
"No." she answered bluntly. She did not want to frighten Akali with what she had been seeing. Things finally felt like they were returning to normal. Akali seemed happy and safe. She wanted to protect that, to protect her. To protect her from everything.
"Kai... Talk to me, please." she pleaded. Akali knew what she was doing, and though she loved this about her, she just wanted to be there for her. Someone for her to rely on.
"Visions... Of, I don't know. Something. Something dark... It called out to me directly, 'Kali." Kai'sa then turned towards her. She had a clear look of worry on her face. It has always been hard for Kai to let herself share her burdens with others. A big catalyst to what had strained their relationship in the past, it was not something she wanted to repeat. She trusted Akali, and she knew she should be able rely on her.
It was unlike Kai to be like this. She was always the one trying to keep everyone hopeful. Never showing any fear, but this was different. It was bothering her, Akali knew what that was like. She would not let Kai bury this or hide it.
"Maybe... Maybe it was just a bad dream, Kai." Akali was being more hopeful than practical. She knew it. But she was just trying to comfort her.
"They are so vivid, 'Kali. It's like I'm there. I can feel the cold of space. I can feel the darkness. It keeps giving me a warning..." Kai explained further that she couldn't get the image out of her mind now; it was frightening. But then she felt the squeeze of Akali's hand on her arm. She turned towards Akali, her anxiety slipping away as she smiled at Akali.
"We're gonna figure it out... Maybe Nilah knows something? We can ask her after school tomorrow... But, what do you mean 'it'?" she asked.
But before Kai could respond, a voice shouted out to them.
"Akali! What did I tell you about staying out so late?! Getting into trouble again!?" Akali's mom shouted from the front step of her porch, her hands on her hips as she glared at the two girls.
"Sorry, Miss Tethi! We were just helping each other study! We lost track of time!" Ka'sa shouted back, giving a bright smile.
Akali's mom just glared back at them, silent for now.
"Thanks..." Akali whispered, turning towards Kai to hug her, "I'll see you tomorrow..." she said as she squeezed her tightly.
"Meet at Noodle Bills before we head to class?" Kai asked, her arms wrapping around her blue-haired friend tightly, her fears momentarily fading from her mind.
Akali pulled back with a wide smirk, "You betcha!" she answered.
Noodle Bills was like a cheat code to Akali's smile, and Kai abused it as much as she could.
"Hurry up!" Akali's mom shouted as she watched disapprovingly.
Akali sighed, her hand slipping across Kai's as she pulled away, giving her a final glance before walking down the brick path to her house.
"I don't get why she even hangs out with you, making her walk all this way? Your not a child anymore, Akali." Akali's mom began her lecture and stream of insults as she walked into the house, her hand holding tightly around the bracelet on her wrist.
Kai sighed. She couldn't help but hear what she was being told. Part of her wanted to storm into the house and tell Akali's mother why she was wrong about Akali, but it would only make things worse.
This sucks, she thought to herself before turning to walk back home. Kai then took out her cellphone to send a text.
"Are you okay?" she asked, staring at her phone as she continued to walk home. It was a peaceful night. The street lights illuminated the sidewalk, the only sounds being cars driving in the distance, the buzzing of the lights, and the wind. Usually, this would be a relaxing walk. But for now, her eyes were glued to the screen of her phone.
It felt like hours that she waited for a response, but it was only a few minutes until her phone squeaked. It squeaked because she made her notification noise from a recording of Ina being scared during her first time inside the animal shelter.
"yea, she's just being a bitch. the usual." Akali said back.
Kai smiled, her heart resting a bit easier now that she knew this wasn't one of her bad nights.
"You shouldn't call her that!" Kai sent back, even though she agreed entirely.
"lol you know its true, though ur probably gonna have to pay for breakfast tomorrow! :Tongue Emoji:" Akali replied, laying down on her bed, headphones on as she listened to Porter Robinson.
"Fine! I'll ask dad to put more money on my account." Kai'sa shook her head as she hit send, then glanced up, seeing she was half a block away from home
"Kassadad! tell him I said sup!" Akali glanced towards the door after her reply, hearing footsteps make their way down the hallway, so she quickly hid her phone under the blankets to pretend she was asleep.
"Okay Kali." Kai answered with a laugh on her text before pushing open the front door to her home.
"Dad, I'm home!" she shouted, taking off her shoes and placing them by the front door, then hung up her jacket. She'd then make her way towards her room, briefly checking her phone for a response. Nothing.
"How was school?" Kassadin called out from his office as she walked past the door, which was located along the same hall as Kai's bedroom.
"It was good! We didn't have math today, so that makes it even better." she said as she leaned on the door frame, looking at her dad, who was on a laptop, small framed glasses resting on the bridge of his nose.
"Kali says 'sup, as well." she said with a slight grin on her lips, briefly looking down at her phone again. Still nothing.
Kassadin let out a chuckle and leaned back in the leather office chair to look at his daughter.
"What's wrong?" he asked, noticing as Kai glanced at her phone again.
"She's not answering..." Kai said with a worried tone before looking back to her father as if looking to him for answers.
Kassadin frowned, all too aware of Akali's home troubles as well. He twirled the chair side to side slightly for a few moments in silence.
"I'm sure she's fine, Kai. She knows she can come here if things get bad... You can't worry yourself all night. Has she texted you at all?" he asked, his eyes briefly looking to the laptop before averting his attention back to Kai'sa.
"Yeah... She just stopped. I dunno, maybe she just fell asleep." Kai sighed, turned to leave, but stopped just as she was outside the door, "Oh! Uh... I told 'Kali I'd buy us breakfast tomorrow..." she said, smiling widely to Kassadin from around the frame of the door.
He just shook his head and waved her off, "Yeah, yeah. I'll sort it out tomorrow. Go to sleep, don't stay up all night worrying." he ordered as he got back to work.
"Yes, dad." she said as she turned the corner, and headed for her room. Then she felt guilty. Wishing Akali could feel safe in her own home as well. It wasn't fair. Nothing this past year has been fair. She tensed the muscles in her jaw as she got to her room. Then set her school book down on her desk, near the picture of her and Akali.
After brushing her teeth, she changed into her pajamas, then collapsed on her bed, dreading the moment she fell asleep. Knowing she might be met with yet another nightmare or vision. Whatever it was.
Before long, Kai's mind began to race. Thoughts of what all these nightmares meant... How was she going to protect Akali from what she was going through at home? Guardian training, school tests, homework, and what else was there?
Squeak! Her phone went off, and she quickly grabbed it off the nightstand.
"sorry, there was a monster in my room" Akali finally answered.
Kai exhaled deeply, then quickly shot her a text back.
Kai: Are you okay?
Akali: yeah, i can already taste the unlimited seasoned eggs.
Kai: Are you ever not hungry?
Akali: have you seen my order history!?
Kai'sa couldn't help but laugh, a smile stuck on her face during the whole conversation.
Kai: Actually, yes. I pay for it half the time, remember?
Akali: O yeah, thanks bestie :*. Try and get some sleep okay? No nightmares allowed.
Kai: I'll try, Goodnight Kali 3
Akali: goodnight 333
Akai and Kai'sa lay in their beds, smiling as they thought of each other. Feelings that were not understood, or spoken of. Their heads turned, gazing out their windows upon the stars. After coming so far, against all the odds. Whether it be Kai's fears of the future or Akali's trouble at home. They would get through it all.
Together.
"Ugh... Where... Where am I?" Kai'sa muttered, her eyes struggling to open as a bright, blinding purple light shone on her eyes.
A deep, rumbling voice echoed in her mind.
