Author's Note:
Thank you all for giving me feedback on the story and how I can improve it. I will take all the requests into consideration as I continue to write more of these chapters. Also, I've been wanting to ask a question to all of those who read this: would you prefer "first-person" writing or "third-person" writing? Please answer in the reviews and I will see which one I should write in the next chapter. Dialogue is still choppy and isn't formatted properly, however, I made sure that the story is readable. Story characters are extremely OOC as you can tell by reading any dialogue from Artemis. Pretty bad chapter overall, but, it is just used to develop the characters and plot!
Chapter 2 Summary:
The hunt is forced to stop due to exhaustion from the random monster attacks they've been getting. Artemis takes Percy out to hunt and they get surrounded by monsters. They kill the monsters with Percy being injured in the process. Whilst Zoë is taking care of him, Percy sneaks out and finds his Uncle Apollo who gives him a special bow and his blessing. This makes Percy the "Adopted Son of Artemis, Real Son of Poseidon, Champion of Apollo."
Chapter 3 - Consequences | October 15th, 1999.
Percy's body seemed to feel upside down as Artemis placed her hand on his shoulder. The aftereffects of flash travel have begun to manifest. It's not like Percy hadn't been flashed to other locations before, but it was still unsettling. As he felt his body drift away before returning to him, a bright light enveloped his vision. When the light faded, he was confronted by an angered Zoë Nightshade, who was looking him down with a death glare. Percy flinched uncontrollably before backing up a few feet into what appeared to be infirmary walls. "You see, Zoë, all I was trying to do was clear my mind and relax a little," Percy said, his voice faltering slightly.
Zoë's face, which was one of anger, slowly turned into worry. "By wandering off into the middle of a forest where thou and Lady Artemis were attacked minutes before? Percy what if thou were surrounded by monsters and couldn't fend for yourself? Who would help thee?" She continued to mumble on and on about what could've happened to him.
Percy zoned out slightly as Zoë continued to worry about him. His thoughts drifted towards what happened in his nightmare earlier when he was in the infirmary. The golden sarcophagus pulled him in. The golden eyes that pierced his vision, illuminated high amounts of power but it was alongside a force of evil. However, the one memory that he remembered clearly was the offer that was made to him.
Flashback - Nightmare
Percy's sole memory was sobbing on his mother's shoulder before falling asleep. Darkness engulfed his vision, only to be replaced by an even darker chamber surrounded by golden pillars. Winds blew past him at speeds faster than any mortal could comprehend. It was as if they were on the tip of a mountain. In the middle of the room, there was a gold-colored sarcophagus that appeared to absorb any light that reflected on it. On the sarcophagus were carvings of gods and goddesses on their knees while ancient Greek cities burned in the background. Except, one goddess caught his attention. On the right side was a carving of his mother, Artemis with her bow snapped broken whilst her silver chariot was in pieces. Anger boiled in his body at the thought of his mother being endangered.
A voice pierced the dark, empty air emanating from the coffin. It was harsh and ancient. "Greetings, my dearest nephew." The voice radiated power and authority.
"Who are you?" questioned Percy, who was suddenly on high alert. "How come you're in my dream?"
The unknown voice chuckled, causing Percy to flinch because it sounded so unsettling. It sounded almost like something out of the movies, but it wasn't. "I'm your grandfather, Perseus Jackson."
Percy was puzzled, searching his memory for any figure from Greek mythology with a voice comparable to this person's. Is this a relative from his mother's or father's side? Percy pondered this over in his mind. It may be Lord Zeus, or it might be... That is not a possibility. The golden color might potentially equal that, but he was vanquished by the gods thousands of years ago and scattered in Tartarus' lowest depths. Why even would the Titan Lord want to be in his dream in the first place?
"The Titan Lord would want to be in your dreams for many reasons, little demigod," The voice said with a dangerous edge. "Son of Poseidon, you are destined to crumble Olympus to its knees."
Percy took another step back until he collided with one of the room's many golden pillars. A figure appeared in front of him, seemingly from nowhere. It was a man with dark gold eyes that seemed to burn right through his soul. Percy recognized the person holding what appeared to be a farming scythe. As the figure got closer and closer to him, his suspicions were verified.
Kronos gave Percy a hard look and continued, "and you," referring to the now cowering Percy, "will help me defeat them. I will personally grant you the opportunity to witness the end of the Olympians' rule over the earth."
Percy tried to pull out his sword by pulling on his moon necklace but it was useless. It seemed like magic was blocked in this dream-like state he was in.
Kronos merely laughed at him before speaking more forcefully. "Have you seen what the gods have already attempted? That Moon goddess only cares about you because she understands what you're meant to do. The gods are exploiting you, Perseus, and none of the other deities, with the exception of my niece, are concerned about you. When you needed him the most, where was your true father? Look what happened to your real mother, Percy, and join with me to exact vengeance on the gods for their carelessness."
Each sentence made Percy wonder if what Kronos was saying to him was truth or simply a bunch of lies. The Titan Lord wasn't entirely incorrect. His biological father was never there for him when he needed him and abandoned his mother to perish at the hands of one of the universe's worst males. Was it, nevertheless, the wisest decision to join him? Percy thought while Kronos was looking at Percy with interest. His adoptive mother had done so much for him, and the hunters had become his genuine family.
With one final thought, Percy made his decision that he would never regret. "No," he announced, causing Kronos to falter in his step.
The golden eyes pierced the air, emanating such rage that the entire area shook violently. "You will regret that decision, son of Poseidon, and I will take my time letting you watch all your family and friends perish at the hands of the titan army!" Kronos shouted in fury.
Flashback - Ended
"Percy! Hello?" Zoë said, trying to get his attention while she was waving her hand in front of his face.
"Sorry Zoë, I was just thinking about something." He responded nervously hoping that Zoë wouldn't catch onto the scared edge in his voice. Percy didn't need another hour of Zoë continuously telling him he should be more careful.
Zoë looked unconvinced but decided to drop the subject regardless. "Alright whatever Percy, just be more careful next time… and if thou do that little stunt again, I will make thy training ten times harder." She threatened while staring him dead in the eyes. "Let's get some sleep before Lady Artemis comes back and finds that thou are awake in the middle of the night." Zoë finished before grabbing his hand and dragging them towards Artemis' tent.
Percy shuddered at the thought that the last time his mother found him wandering around the camp at four in the morning, he wasn't allowed to use his sword for days! "Zoë? Thank you for everything," he said, drawing the attention of the daughter of Atlas.
"No worries, Percy," she replied warmly, "it's part of my responsibility to keep thou safe anyways."
After that, it was all silent until they reached the large silver tent. Zoë watched Percy enter before walking away towards her own. When Percy entered the large tent, he found his mother sitting on the bed with her bow in hand staring at the ground concentrated in thought.
The goddess' powerful symbol, which she was holding in her hands, glinting with strength and might. The tent was enveloped in an elegant silver light. After everything that had happened today, Artemis had an anxious frown on her face. Percy was injured in a battle with monsters, and her idiotic brother had discovered Percy's true origins.
"Mom?" Percy asked, slightly worried.
Artemis smiled as she looked up at Percy, brushing away the worry from her face. Although, this was quickly replaced with a troubled expression. "Percy, I know something is upsetting you; would you mind telling your mother what's wrong?"
Percy gulped before mumbling out something that was too quiet and couldn't be comprehended by Artemis.
"Percy, slow down so I can understand what you're saying," Artemis encouraged, resting her hands softly on his shoulders.
"Kronos appeared to me in my dream," Percy managed to mutter, prompting Artemis to return her hands to her bow. At the mention of the ancient titan, the room got noticeably colder as a breeze rushed through them.
Artemis' eyes widened as she realized what she had just heard. "What did he say to you, Percy?" She asked, her grasp on the silver bow hardening to the point that her knuckles were practically white.
"He offered me to join him and... destroy Olympus," Percy explained before seeing his mother's worried expression, "but don't worry mommy, I rejected his offer."
Artemis let out a sigh of relief she hadn't realized she'd been holding in for so long. Percy's hands were in hers as she dragged them both to the bed. When they were both changed and ready to sleep, Artemis smiled at her son. "Whenever you have these nightmares, my son, you can wake me up." She whispered before warmly holding him and shutting off the lights. The two of them fell asleep, unaware that the second line of the great prophecy was currently being fulfilled.
Time Skip - Morning Next Day
Artemis awoke with a mild headache, the revelations of the day before still fresh in her memory. Should she inform the other Olympians about Percy's nightmare, or should she keep it a secret for the time being? The great prophecy would not be fulfilled until Percy reached the age of sixteen, which would be still many years away. Furthermore, if she did tell the Olympians, Uncle Poseidon would find out earlier as well as her father who would most likely kill Percy. Artemis was very certain that the Olympians were aware that Kronos was rising, but they were taking no action.
The sun was just rising beyond the trees as she silently left her tent, taking care not to wake up Percy. "Apollo is still out on his daily run," she said aloud enough for anyone nearby to hear. Artemis, on the other hand, knew that no one was awake at this time, or so she believed. She heard a slight movement behind her, and hurriedly drew her bow and aimed directly at a female figure. However, the female figure in question was none other than Zoë Nightshade. "Zoë! What the Hades are you doing up this early?" Artemis hissed quietly and stored her bow.
Zoë's eyes widened "Apologies, M'lady, I was just..." She paused, "I couldn't sleep and needed some fresh air." She explained while attempting to sound confident, but in reality, her mind was filled with emotions and stress. Everything that was going on with Percy and his biological father worried her. Zoë didn't want anything bad to happen to the Hunt, Lady Artemis, or Percy.
Artemis eyed Zoë carefully, examining her facial features before narrowing her eyes slightly. "I can tell something is worrying you, Zoë, what is it?"
Zoë sighed as she looked at her mistress. "It is just everything that has happened in the last few weeks." She gave a thoughtful response. Artemis, on the other hand, only gave her a stern look, knowing she was hiding something. Without many options, Zoë answered truthfully. "I am just worried about Percy and his real father, M'lady."
Artemis only responded with a nod, understanding what her lieutenant was thinking about. To be honest, she was just as concerned as Zoë was. Her conversation with Apollo replayed in her mind, reminding Artemis of the troubling situation they were in. "I understand what you're worrying about, Zoë, but there's a lot more you need to know," Artemis spoke, causing Zoë to raise an eyebrow. "Percy had..." She began before biting her tongue. "When he was in the infirmary with you, he had a nightmare in which he was in a dark room with a golden sarcophagus."
Before Artemis could finish, Zoë exclaimed, "It's Kronos, isn't it?" Her dark volcanic eyes widened.
When the powerful ancient titan was mentioned, a cold breeze blew past them. The name sent shivers down Zoë's spine. After all, she was alive when the Titanomachy occurred.
Artemis nodded once again. "It is best that we discuss this later Zoë, as I have to go inform the other Olympians about these new revelations without exposing Percy. The most we can do is watch for unusual activities and hopefully be able to stop them as soon as possible." She cautioned. "Try to get some rest before you need to train Percy." Artemis reminded Zoë before flashing in a silver mist to Olympus.
Zoë was left deep in thought as she stood in the midst of the leaves and grass. She decided to listen to her mistress and attempt to get some sleep. When she climbed into her bed, the other hunters were all fast asleep, the feeling of comfort covering her body with darkness consuming her vision.
Time Skip
The morning air flew throughout the sky with the sun beaming down on Earth. The hunters were currently practicing either archery or close combat with hunting knives. Percy had just been awakened from his slumber by Zoë, who was yanking him from Artemis' tent. The goddess had already traveled to Olympus for a crucial council meeting, where she planned to raise the issue of the monster attacks that were far more powerful than usual. Artemis couldn't risk her fellow Olympians finding out about Percy just yet, even though she knew what was causing the attacks. The time for him to be discovered is slowly coming. Percy still has ten years to prepare before the second line of the great prophecy is struck.
"Zoëeee," Percy whined, "why must we wake up at such an early time?" He complained while being dragged by Zoë through the hunters' camp.
Zoë tightened her grasp on his hand, squeezing it and making Percy squeal in pain. She looked at him before bursting out laughing. Her black hair flew in the breeze, and her face was devoid of the usual stress and tension. Before responding to him, Zoë had to calm down enough to speak. "Percy, do thou know it is nearly noon?" She stated this while squinting her eyes slightly towards the sun. "We also need to work on thy close combat skills." Zoë pointed at his necklace which was blessed by Artemis.
Percy glared at her before she glared back, causing him to flinch making Zoë smirk. "Fine, Zo-Zo, but I'm tired of being beaten all the time."
"Don't worry about losing, Percy, that is how thou improve by accepting thy defeats and conquering them," Zoë said, smiling, giving him the confidence boost he desperately needed.
He returned the smile as they walked silently to the training grounds. However, the silence was shattered as Phoebe approached the two.
"I see you two are getting along very well," Phoebe commented, "and I can tell Moonboy's combat abilities have really improved." She said while wrapping her arms around both Zoë and Percy.
Zoë laughed at his nickname, "He may get obnoxious at times..." she remarked, but before Percy could object, she added, "but he is totally different from the rest of his gender, and I believe M'lady was right about him."
Phoebe chuckled as Percy's eyes twinkled with joy. All he ever wanted was to be a member of a family that cared for him, and he has finally received his wish.
"All right, both of you, be cautious and don't wander off and do something dumb while we wait for M'lady to get back," Phoebe warned before walking away to join her fellow huntresses.
The pair arrived at the combat arena and prepared to begin their daily practice fights. Zoë took out her silver hunting knives, which were remarkably identical to Artemis'. The long sharp edges made Percy tremble slightly, but he regained his composure after recalling that Zoë would never intentionally harm him. He tugged on the Moon charm, which transformed into a stunning sword, but instead of the pristine silver hue he expected, there were lines of gold inscribed into the blade. Near the hilt of the sword, Percy noticed some small writing engraved in the sword. After a closer inspection, the words read out, "Blessed by the Sun and Moon."
Zoë noticed his visible confusion, "What is wrong, Percy?" she asked before something seemed to click in Percy's head.
"Oh, it's nothing, I just remembered that Uncle Apollo blessed me," Percy answered casually.
Zoë looked at him as if he was crazy. "Lord Apollo blessed thee?" She mentioned Apollo's name with clear distaste. Although, her disgust didn't go unnoticed.
"What is wrong with Uncle Apollo?" Percy asked curiously as to why Zoë despised him. Percy thought his mother's twin brother was a really cool and nice person.
"There are several things wrong with 'Uncle' Apollo," Zoë spat angrily, "for one, he's a womanizer and doesn't have any regard for women."
Percy looked at her even more confused this time, "what is a womanizer?"
"Thou are too young for that Percy," Zoë said, her eyes widening. "I will tell thou when thy are older," Zoë replied, attempting to avoid the subject. "Let us fight and I will show thou where to improve on." She announced while twiddling with her hunting knives.
Percy responded with a nod as he prepared his sword and took a starting stance. As the battle began, Zoë followed his every move. Percy was the one who struck first, striking at Zoë's side. Before she could respond, her hunting knives immediately deflected the hit. After exchanging blows for a while, with one small flick, Zoë managed to disarm Percy's sword and encircled his throat with her hunting knives all within a few seconds.
"Are thou willing to yield?" She asked, smirking at Percy, who quickly nodded. Before facing him, Zoë stowed her hunting knives. "When thou are fighting someone, thou need to be more patient. I am not suggesting that attacking first is a terrible idea, but thou should do some extra examination on thy opponent before making thy initial move. Consider thy battle to be a chess match. Take thy time to anticipate thy opponent's next move before it occurs." She offered while glancing at Percy who appeared to be deep in thought at her little lecture.
Percy furrowed his eyebrows attempting to process everything Zoë had just said. His facial features reverted to the normal mischievous boy. "Thank you Zo-Zo! Could you teach me how to use your knives?"
"Of course, Moonboy," Zoë answered with a smile, "but first, let's go work on your archery." She said while already dragging Percy to the archery range.
Line Break
It would be an understatement to say Artemis was bored. These council meetings, which were growing more and more frequent, had badly exhausted her. Listening to her father go on about how nothing was wrong despite the fact that several of the other gods and goddesses had informed the council about the monster attacks. Artemis had arrived earlier in the day and was currently twiddling with her bow while listening in on a quarrel between her father and her sister, Athena.
"Father, the ambushes on demigods have been going on for weeks while you've been over here ignoring them like it's nothing."
"Athena-"
"We can all feel the power building day by day, it's so unmistakable that something ancient is stirring!" Athena shouted angrily, drawing everyone's attention in the throne room.
Artemis, however, decided to provide a helping hand to her sister before her father could answer. "Athena is correct, Father. These monsters have been attacking the Hunt for the past few days as well." She said while looking around at the council to see their reactions.
Hera didn't seem to be paying attention. Demeter was staring at her growing crops on her throne. Apollo was immersed in music. Ares was sharpening his knife. Hephaestus was amusing himself with a small metal object. Aphrodite was applying makeup whilst holding a mirror. Hermes was conversing with the two serpents on his staff. Hestia was tending to the hearth. Dionysus fumbled with a wine bottle. However, even with everything that was going on, only one thing caught Artemis' interest. Poseidon. He appeared to be deep in thought and not paying attention to the meeting at hand. Artemis remembered what Apollo had said about their uncle during the previous night's conversation.
"C'mon little sis, Uncle P has been muttering about a child in previous council meetings and he appears to be looking for Perry, but your blessing on the hunters' camp greatly reduces his scent."
Artemis quickly looked away before anyone noticed her staring. She returned to waiting impatiently for her father to respond.
Zeus paused, he stroked his beard in contemplation. "There is not much we can do except for keeping an eye out for future indications of danger and to notify the council immediately. If no one else has anything else to add, then I declare this meeting is dismissed." Zeus announced before lightning struck the spot where he was sitting flashing him wherever he went.
Many more council members vanished in their own spectrum of light and elements. However, after a second look around, Artemis noticed Apollo had lingered behind rather than departing first as he always did. "Why are you still here Apollo? Normally, you're the one who leaves first." She asked curiously.
Apollo's smile faltered, "there's some important news I would like you to know about, Artemis." He responded seriously.
Artemis flashed him a worried look. Unless anything was harming her or the hunt, her brother was never like this. She nodded letting him know to continue.
"The minor gods..." Apollo began before hesitating for a little moment to consider his thoughts. "Hecate and a handful of the others have been acting rather strangely recently," he muttered quietly.
"Apollo, what are you trying to insist on?" Artemis asked after carefully examining his facial characteristics.
"Well, it's very evident that something ancient is rising, and father isn't concerned with it at all," he added, gesturing to their father's throne, "and when I went to get a potion from Hecate yesterday, I discovered them having a chat about a new 'master' they had."
Artemis' eyes widened before she sighed, "Apollo, have you felt the power surges all around San Francisco? Othrys is rebuilding itself and the titans are rising now alongside the minor gods while we are all sitting back, not even bothering about it." She said with her face in her hands in stress.
Many think that immortality is a blessing or even an extremely lucky gift but, in reality, being immortal is more like a curse. An eternity of endless pain and suffering while forced to watch everything around you slowly fade away.
Apollo gasped before he removed his sister's hands from her face and hugged her. The two twins finally showing affection for each other after thousands of years of constant bickering and annoyance.
"As you said, only time will tell, Artemis," Apollo said in a voice that imitated hers, earning himself a light glare.
Artemis nodded instead of responding before flashing both of them to the middle of the hunters' camp. Everyone around them immediately dropped what they were doing and had bows aimed at their throats. "Relax sisters, it's just us," Artemis said, causing them to lower their bows.
"Sorry M'lady, it was just instinct after everything that has been happening." Zoë apologized, speaking about the monster attacks. Almost every unexpected movement that was heard within the hunt was acted upon with weapons fully drawn due to the many times they were ambushed throughout the weeks.
With a wave of her hand, Artemis dismissed Zoë's apologies. "Hunters! Return to your normal activities," she announced before turning to her lieutenant, "Zoë, can you let Percy know to come to my tent?" she whispered.
Zoë nodded and ran off towards the archery range to find Percy.
"So sis, why did you flash us here?" Apollo asked, trying his hardest not to meet eye contact with any of the hunters.
Artemis just blatantly ignored him. Even though many of the hunters glared at Apollo, Artemis dragged him through the camp until they arrived at her tent, where she found Percy waiting.
Percy's face lit up with a smile once he noticed them "Mommy!" he dashed forward and hugged Artemis, who hugged him back with equal affection.
"No hug for your awesome uncle and patron?" Apollo smirked sarcastically.
"Of course not!" Percy shouted while releasing his mother and jumping towards Apollo who chuckled.
Artemis mumbled something in ancient Greek and emitted a barrier around the trio as they entered the tent.
"My son, would you tell Uncle Apollo over here about the nightmare you had earlier?" Artemis asked warmly.
Apollo looked at her curiously.
"Uncle Apollo," Percy said with a nod, "I had a nightmare two nights ago in which there was a golden coffin and the Titan Lord appeared to me and offered me to join their side."
Apollo gasped as he stared at his sister, "why didn't you inform the council about this?" he exclaimed. "This is important news the council-"
"You idiot! Of course, I wouldn't tell the council about this!" Artemis yelled, "Apollo, I had you take an oath for a reason." She warned him before calming down slightly. "Plus, we would be endangering my son in the process."
Apollo stared at her for a moment before nodding. "Percy's the prophecy child isn't he?" He asked, catching Artemis off guard.
Artemis paused for a moment. She has already told him a lot, so it wouldn't be an issue if she just told him the whole story, right? "Yes, Percy is the prophecy child." Artemis acknowledged sadly.
For a long period, the two sat in silence. Artemis and Apollo were pondering the possibilities for the future. They still had ten years until the great prophecy is going to be fulfilled and Olympus was either destroyed or rescued.
Percy, on the other hand, was standing in the middle of the tent, confused, during their chat. What exactly was this prophecy they were bringing up? All of it was too much for the six-year-old to take in.
"Mom?" Percy asked, drawing the attention of the two immortals. "What exactly is the prophecy that both of you are talking about?"
"When you're older, Percy, I will tell you everything," Artemis assured as she ruffled his hair, "for the time being, let us enlist Zoë's to help with your archery, as I and Uncle Apollo must depart for Olympus."
Percy smiled before running out of the tent happily to test his bow for the first time since acquiring it.
Author's Note:
Thanks for reading chapter-3 of my story! I really appreciate the feedback, etc. If you have suggestions or criticism, please leave them in the reviews (I read every review!). This chapter was supposed to be a part of chapter-2, however, I decided to make it separate to help the plot development. I really do not want to make this story into some cliche, non-original, story that copies a lot of ideas from others and it is much harder than it looks to just think of ideas on the spot. If you want me to write longer chapters, I can gladly try that in the upcoming chapters. Again, thank you for reading and I'll see you in the next chapter which will be out in around a week or two.
