He slithers in the water. Something is here with him, something that whirrs. It's a loud thing, an obvious thing and it creaks like the wooden ship that he likes to cuddle up with.
He swims closer.
This deep in the water, there's no light for his eyes, but he can tell the thing is very small and not good to eat.
The thing turns around. Small but strong beams light up from its face and very briefly, oh ever so briefly, he's able to see green.
But green makes his eyes hurt, so he brings up his giant hands and cups them around the thing.
'Quiet!' he rumbles from his throat.
"This mission is so stupid," an agent grumbles. "There's nothing here. The giant is just an urban waterfolk legend. No naturally incurring mer could get up the reported size."
His partner rolls his eyes. "Stop being such a scaredy cat and turn on the beams. The radar is picking up something."
"Probably just the mountain peak we're nearing. Which beams do you want?"
"Eh, just for the hell of it, let's do UV. I wanna see if anything glows."
The agent flicks on the lights. A few fishes darted into the UV beams before darting away. The agent slowly turns around the sub to get a feel for where they are.
Slowly their entire window is filled with fluorescent green.
They're both silent until the green moves. "It was nice knowing you, man."
