Chapter 7
I was … angry, I suppose would be the correct word for what has happened within the last couple days. I was correct that the moment my brother was aware that camp was no longer safe, he would immediately head back to camp as fast as he could, however Chiron had only just managed to get ahold of mom to let her know about the new danger at camp, when we were made aware that Annabeth had not been seen since dinner the night before.
A search party had turned up nothing and I had begun to wonder if my paranoid musings, after Luke had betrayed us, about Annabeth's loyalties had become true or not when just as evening had begun to set, my brother, Annabeth, and a … rather small cyclops come walking downhalfbloodhill.
Apparently, Annabeth had taken the matter in her own hands and had gone to retrieve Percy. TheDemiProtectorsmade quick trips into the mortal world simple and a lot safer, but we were still required to attain permission before leaving and more than that Chiron and Mr. D had the final say in important decisions. Chiron had decided to try talking my mom into keeping Percy with her for his safety instead of allowing him to return to camp, not only for his protection but also for the protection of the other campers. Percy as a child of one of the Big Three, and quite a bit more powerful than most of the other campers already, had a very powerful smell and presence when it came to monsters and thus could actually lead monsters straight for us should hisDemiProtectorsuddenly fail. My own smell was bad enough but adding Percy's as well...
I wasn't surprised when the camp was almost immediately attacked not long after my brother arrived, after all if it wasn't my brother's scent that was followed then it would've had to have been the cyclops'.
Good news though. I found out I'm heat resistant and I also somehow have pyro-kinesis, a fact I realized when trying to protect my brother from Colchis Bulls, bulls with bronze hooves and mouths through which they breathed fire.
Bad news though, Zeus was furious that his daughter's tree had been poisoned and was, for the second time since I've come to this camp, quick to blame someonewithout proof; Chiron. As such he'd ordered Mr. D to fire Chiron and now Chiron had been forced to leave and in his place was a disgusting immortal by the name of Tantalus.
Chiron, before leaving had told us that the only way to save Thalia's tree was by finding the 'Golden Fleece', so of course my brother tries to appeal to Tantalus for a quest to find the Golden Fleece.
Tantalus, however, is reluctant and by that I mean it is clear he doesn't actually give a damn about what happens to the campers here. He spends most of his time trying and failing to catch his food and the rest of the time he spends mocking my brother in front of the campers, and clearly trying to create in fighting within the camp. This is a man who wants nothing more than to watch the world burn.
I don't see much of the man though, my brother won't let me leave the cabin without Will or Tyson, our new baby brother cyclops and recently claimed by dad, beside me. If they can't be beside me, my brother directs me into the lake withAerethiaand the other naiads until he returns to the cabin for the day.
If the other campers notice Percy's protection of me, they know better than to speak up about it. I try to stay busy so I don't have to think about why my brother doesn't want me to draw Tantalus' attention.
In all the confusion, Annabeth's actions against Chiron's decision fall to the wayside and is immediately forgotten by nearly everyone, except me of course. Don't get me wrong I love that my brother is here with me but I also understood that it was dangerous to have both my brother and I here at the same time at the moment when the camps protections were at their lowest.
I didn't like not knowing Annabeth's reasoning for retrieving my brother. Though I did notice that she didn't think too highly of Tyson, my cyclops brother who I believe was only a little older than my brother. Annabeth and Percy weren't friends and he was barely civil with her. So why would she go get him? It didn't make sense.
It's after a chariot race and shooting down Stymphalian birds, I managed two of them, and a very creepy and disgusting story that Tantalus finally grants a quest... to Clarisse.
My brother protests that the Golden Fleece is in the Sea of Monsters and thus he should be allowed to go as well. I would agree but I was also aware that Clarisse wasn't quite ready to get over her issues with Percy and I enough to trust either of us.
It's at that point that I realize something, watching Annabeth and her shifty expression, her intense, hopeful looks at my brother, her bouncing knee as the quest for the Golden Fleece is discussed. She had expected my brother to be the one given the mission considering how powerful he is and his previous experience and success. It wasn't a bad assumption to make.
If Chiron was here, she wouldn't have been wrong, but Tantalus is the Camp Director, he's in charge, and he very obviously doesn't want to save Camp Half-Blood. Tantalus is expecting Clarisse to fail and without my brother's experience and ability to sail the Sea of Monsters, I don't see the expectation being too far off the mark.
Annabeth, Clarisse and Travis Stoll leave on their quest for the Golden Fleece the next morning. That was a dumpster fire waiting to happen. Annabeth and Clarisse on the same team? Poor Travis. I suppose at the very least Annabeth finally got her wish. Now we would see what she made of it.
That same morning, I wake early, packed and ready to go. Absolutely no way was my brother going to allow himself to stay at camp like a good little boy when camp wasn't safe anymore. Neither would he have let me stay, not with Tantalus here, if he was going on a quest.
I find Percy, Tyson, Ethan, and Will on the lakeshore, all of them packed and ready to go. Percy immediately takes charge the moment he sees me, "Will, whatever happens you stick to Cas like glue."
We leave camp on the back of hippocampi, who take us near the Princess Andromeda, which is for some reason barely out of sight of the camp, and we climb aboard. I hate it immediately and have no clue why until the next morning when we realize the boat is being commanded by Luke Castellan himself.
We barely escape with the gifts my brother received from Lord Hermes and Will has refused to let me out of his arms since. I'm sitting between his legs, practically curled into his chest when we get a surprise guest in the middle of the ocean – Triton, Poseidon's heir and our oldest brother.
"WHatwere you thinking?! A quest is no place for a nine year old, Perseus Jackson!" Triton was raging at Percy and I opened my mouth to speak in his defense, but Triton continued, "And right into the traitors arms as well?!"
"Would you have preferred I leave Cas at camp under the threatening gaze of our new camp director, Tantalus?" Percy growled, irritably.
Triton growls as well at the information, before grudgingly admitting, "Rock and a hard place, got it."
He breaths heavily through his nose to calm himself, before continuing,"Still this quest is too dangerous, Perseus! Even father has very little control of anything in the Sea of Monsters. It is the one place in the ocean we do our best to avoid. It's infested with powerful monsters. Even with your new rather ingenious bracelets."
My face is on fire from the embarrassment and I'm sure he hears my squeak, at the rush of pleasure at the praise for my work, as I tried to burrow into Will's chest. I pinch his side when he snickers under his breath at me. I don't care what he thinks. My oldest brother is proud of me damnit!
"Perseus! Explain quickly why our youngest sibling is in the arms of a boy?!" Triton roars, the waves crashing against our vessel dangerously.
Will tenses against me, but doesn't let go and instead seems to hold tighter and I follow his example, clinging onto him tightly. Percy told me to stay close to Will. Will would protect me. I hold back a whimper, remembering that Will was only three years older than me. I didn't want him to die. Not for me or because of me.
I reach for my control of the water and try to ease the waves into something more settled. We were not going to capsize just because my brothers don't know how to control their tempers! Most of us would be fine, but Ethan and Will didn't have our ability to swim easily or breathe under water.
"Triton, meet Will Solace, son of Apollo,Cas'best friend and my go to forCas'bodyguard." Percy intones, dutifully.
"Is he worthy?" Triton snaps, sharply.
"Will is a healer, a marksman, and fiercely loyal to Cas. That's good enough for me." Percy responds just as sharply.
I bit my lip to hold my tongue. It would seem both my older brothers were very protective, I didn't like the way Triton talked about Will, but I wanted him alive so I said nothing. I didn't think either of them would take it very well right now. In the middle of the ocean.
I was now hyper aware of the danger Will was in and vowed that I would protect him to the best of my ability, even if that meant going up against my brothers. My eye's narrowed and I glared at my brother, daring him to try something.
Tritonhmms, thoughtfully and something about Percy's words seem to strike a chord in him, luckily, because he nods, "Loyalty is a good quality to have. I suppose I see your point, Perseus."
He shakes his head a bit, seeming to focus again, "Back to the matter at hand. Your quest is too dangerous for Castor. Father wants Castor closer to Atlantis. Back within our territory. Thing is, we can't actually be in contact with either of you for too long so we have to do this indirectly."
Triton looks Will and I over, his hands twitching as if he's trying to keep himself from snatching me away and making a run for it.
"Nothing for it then." Triton sighs to himself, "Castor Jackson, I have a quest for you."
I jolt in Will's arms and stare at my oldest brother in disbelief.
"What?" Percy snarls.Uh oh.
The waves are sharp and jagged in Percy's anger and I swallow thickly. I needed to do something quick before these two rip our vessel in two.
"What is the q-quest?" I ask as strongly and as confidently as I can.
Triton ignores Percy for the moment, his lips twitching into a small smile, "Father has told me of your abilities as an enchanter and your desires to build a safe haven for those who need it."
He pauses for a moment and I can feel the heat in my cheeks again, "There is an inactive underwater volcano that father and I believe would be suitable for you to set up your desired forge and workshop."
"It is well within our territory and father has already ordered more than a dozen of our cyclops siblings to head in that direction." This, he says more for Percy's benefit than mine, I'm sure, because Percy nods and seems to relax a bit.
"They will follow any orders you give them. Your quest is to sail across the ocean and find the inactive underwater volcano that I speak of. There you will begin setting up your forge and workshop to your specific desires." The way he speaks is more formal, as if giving a command, but I can hear the glee in his words.
"Since you are far too young to be travelling on your own, even in our territory, you shall be allowed your current bodyguard and your pick of two more companions, preferably older and more responsible companions. For this quest only, your companions will be given the gift to breathe under water." He's stern as he says this, shooting a glare at Will, who only tightens his grip on me.
Triton looks back at me and his gaze is soft again, a smile tugging at his lips, "I will gift you a small sailboat to achieve your quest since this quest is such short notice and you have not been given time to prepare for your journey. I will send your boat to pick up your two companions and these two hippocampi will escort you to your boat and your companions whereupon you will assume command of your boat. Do you accept this quest, Castor Jackson?"
I blinked at all the information, "Y-yes?"
That entire spiel was an overload of information and could barely if at all be considered a quest. It was only on a technicalitythat it could be considered a quest and that's only because I would have to sail the boat on the ocean for who knows how long to a very vague location with only three other people with me.
I glanced at Will, who had a very odd look on his face. Sorta like amusement, disbelief, shock, and budding hysterics all rolled into one. Well, he was no help.
I looked over at Percy, who was grinning like a loon, and Tyson, the poor sweetheart looked as confused as I was, though I had a very vague idea of what was happening.
Bright grin in place, Triton continued on like nothing was amiss, "Just need the names of your chosen companions then?"
"O-oh, um, Charles Beckendorf, and uh Silena Beauregard." I stuttered quickly.
"Good choice." Percy murmured, nodding his own consent to Triton, who nodded his acknowledgement.
Hugs and kisses were quickly passed around and the next thing I knew both Will and I were sitting on hippocampi.
Alone.
In the middle of the ocean.
I blinked down at the myriad of colors beneath me and whispered to Will, "What the Hades just happened?"
A sharp slap of an oddly placed wave against the side of my hip told me, dad did not approve of my language or that I had invoked his brother's namein the middle of the oceanwith only my best friend beside me.
I yelped at the sting and Will finally seemed to snap out of whatever daze he had been in and he roared with laughter, struggling to stay seated on his very colorful ride.
I rolled my eyes, exasperatedly. The only ones who still made sense was Tyson, who had cried as he gave me a great big hug and waved tearfully as we left.
Was if the age difference?
