Chapter 2: Hopeful Second Chance
Written By AnimayWriteY0
[2 Weeks Ago, At Midoriya Residence 5:30 P.M.]
Near the front door, a worrisome Inko Midoriya is pacing back and forth in hopes that her young son would arrive home and opening the very same door she's waiting for him to show himself. Usually, Izuku would come home an hour early before the 6:00 P.M. curfew hit its mark. Now not only her precious son hasn't come home like he always did before, the clock from the upper right corner of the entrance way continued to tick to the point where the minute arrow nearly landed on the 12th number. When the clock hit six, Inko's heart skipped a beat and calm herself trying to justify her son's lateness.
Probably just hanging out with a few friends…No, that idea is clearly not the case. The older Midoriya with the knowledge on Izuku's outcome with his former friends after being exposed to his burden of being quirkless knew better than to think they'll even let Izuku have a chance to be a part in their social group. In fact, it's obvious that those kids who abandoned Izuku would just bully him. Maybe he's using the extra time to train a bit longer...Yeah that has to be it! That boy, always putting so much work into becoming a hero. Inko thought while laughing humorlessly in her mind, but deep down she felt a slight bit guilty about this change in her son. To see him work so tirelessly and harshly just so he can chase his dream of being a great hero, it made her think. And there came the third reason in which made the mother cringe and clamp her chest tightly where her heart rested.
D-Did my son decided to run away from home? Inko furiously shook her head denying such a notion to be a possibility. No, that's clearly not something he would do even if he's justified into doing it. To Inko, she's partly to blame for not giving her son the much-needed validation in order for him to cope with the biased society against quirkless people like him. As much as she wishes for her son to be happy for what he dreamed of doing, deep down she couldn't say those encouraging words due to her fear of losing her son to such a dangerous occupation. Now, she came to regret that decision. It's eating at her from the inside as more time passes without her son not coming back home anytime soon.
[Near the Bakugou Residence same time]
The same young girl who Izuku managed to get her away from Bakugou's wrath finally stopped herself in order to catch her breath. She looked at her own hands fearfully as to what she had done. She literally let an innocent person get hurt on her behalf. How can she become the hero she dreamed of becoming if she can't even stand up for herself and what's worse is the fact that what she heard from Katsuki's rant, her would-be savior happened to have the same burden as her? She clasps her hands together clutching them tightly while going down on her knees and let out pained cries for how worthless she is. Luckily, no one was there to try and confront her. And she didn't mind that. All her life she wanted to be a great hero like All Might. To stand tall in the face of danger and save those who are in the midst of peril by villainous individuals. And yet her former friend decided to treat her like crap all because she doesn't have a quirk.
"Why?...Why can't I do anything right?!" She cried out.
When herself berating finally diminished the young girl looked at the direction where her fellow quirkless defended her. She's seen the way he stood up against her would-be bullies especially Bakugou. He's unwavering, focused, and obviously courageous. No quirkless person would dare to challenge a quirk user as high as Bakugou and yet the green haired boy proved that he's able to handle himself. Of course, back when she ran away from the encounter, she could hear multiple loud explosions being let loose. She knew it's inevitable for the boy to go down hard and yet that still made the raven-haired girl even more guilt driven at how she just allowed herself to let him suffer in her place.
As much as she admired the ash blonde. She won't let his actions go without consequences. She needed to let his mother know what happened. That's something she can at least do for the freckled boy's troubles. With that she took out her cell phone and began to search for the appropriate contact and dial the call. The moment she got a pickup, she addresses all the details that happened at the creek bridge. "Hello, Auntie Mitsuki…This is Akane Fumo."
[At Bakugou Residence]
Mitsuki is currently washing dishes while Masaru is checking up on the bills from the delivered mail. Soon enough, Mitsuki's phone which is placed by the edge of the coffee table started to chime. Masaru, who is literally closest to the device took the phone and examine the contact number plus name. To his surprise, it came from Akane Fumo.
The Bakugou's are well acquainted with the petite little girl due to her love for heroism and share that passion with their son. They also wanted to introduce the girl with the Midoriya's yet her free time is quite limited due to her putting all her time into heroics.
Akane was orphaned because of her actual parents having a hideously bias hatred for the quirkless. In short, they just threw her away into an orphanage as soon as they had a quirk doctor check up on her to see if she'll ever manifest a quirk later on and proved to be negative.
The orphanage didn't fare any better. The caretakers barely given her the appropriate nutrition needed to avoid starvation, didn't offer her any education compared to her quirked age group, and worst of all she took a lot of abuse by the very same kids who used their manifested quirks to test them on her. It lasted for 4 months until that one-day Akane finally had enough and made a decision to run away. Hence the reason why the two parenting Bakugou's met the girl when they're out getting some weekly groceries. When they saw her scavenging through garbage's in order to find any decent leftovers to eat, their hearts ache for the poor starved girl. In guilty conscious they decided to give her temporary sanctuary at their residence until someone is willing to adopt her.
Thankfully for Akane, Mitsuki and Masaru still showed the much-needed kindness towards her regardless of her quirkless status just like Izuku. They did their best to provide safety and comfort for the girl in order to let her know that there are people out there who will accept her for who she is as a person. And soon enough they're right, Akane managed to get adopted by a couple. To make this even better is the fact that the couples are fairly well known within the hero community.
Akane was a little hesitant of letting them know of her quirklessness. But to her shock and delight, they never cared about that. They still love her as their own daughter.
That news of Akane finally having a loving family gave Mitsuki and Masaru a sense of happiness and joy that the young girl can live peacefully. But one Katsuki Bakugou isn't pleased, in fact he's down right pissed at the thought of another quirkless peasant getting the attention by two pro heroes. So, the ash blonde would go out of his way to bring her down and keep her from ever thinking of becoming the number one hero. That honor should only belong to him, and him alone. Not for that useless Deku, not to that damned Dotty, and surely not to anyone who thinks they're good enough to take that away from him. And he'll do it under his parent's thumbs. But that would soon change with a call.
"Oi Masa Kun! Can you pick up the phone for me?! I'm a little occupied making my son his favorite spicy curry!" The matured woman called out. With that permission Masaru did just that and answered the call.
"Hello, Akane?" Masaru asked until his carefree smile dropped the moment Akane told him everything.
"U-Uncle Masaru! K-Katsu Kun he accidentally fell off a bridge at the creek! I wanted to help him, but he and his friends tried to hurt me! I told him to stop but they wouldn't listen!" Akane cried out behind the other line clearly in extreme stress and desperation.
"W-What?!...Why would he?!" His outburst suddenly caught the attention of his wife which in reflex had already stood behind her husband with obvious worry plastered on her face.
"Put it on speaker mode Masaru…" Mitsuki demanded lowly as her anxiety for the girl grew. The older ash blonde woman had already figured something like this would happen between her and Katsuki, but something is definitely wrong the way Akane sounded.
"Akane Chan please calm down. I need to know what happened next?" Masaru hesitantly asked hoping his son didn't hurt her in any way. But what he got shook him and Mitsuki in their core.
"A Green haired boy, he came out of nowhere and tried to d-defend me against Katsu Kun and his goons! He told me to run! I tried to tell him not to or he'll get hurt but he told me to run! I ran but I heard large explosions behind me! K-Katsu Kun may have gone overboard on him!" Akane began to cry between words feeling completely useless for allowing this to happen.
Both Bakugou parent's eyes widen at the implication. The two looked at each other in fear of who that green haired boy would be? "Please dear god don't tell me it's him…!" Mitsuki shook in anger the moment she thought back at how her son attempted to mentally and physically scar his best friend. The mother did what she could to discipline her son to never treat Izuku badly for his condition, but she knew it wouldn't convince him. She didn't understand how her son changed so drastically but it was clear that Katsuki grew a toxic and aggressive ego soon after the end of his kindergarten year. Whatever happened there Mitsuki didn't know but to her knowledge given the way Katsuki acted definitely spelled trouble.
Of course, Mitsuki talked to Izuku about it a few days ago but he would always let her know just like his mother that he will handle it. It's his overall responsibility to help his former friend into getting that self-importance out of his ungrateful ass and bring him down to earth. Even if he doesn't have a quirk he's hell bent on making sure Katsuki would see what he's doing is not the right path he's currently crossing. At the pace he's going, there's no doubt he'll gradually become the very opposite of what he believed he aspired to become. But Izuku will call him out for that at a later time.
Looking at the clock, they came to a realization that Izuku is extremely late from his curfew. That was enough to have Mitsuki use a home phone to dial Inko's cellphone number. Immediately Inko answered with a tone that spelled a rightfully sickly worried mother desperately wanting to know what happened to her missing son. "Mitsuki! Mitsuki! Is my son with you and Masaru San?! Please, dear god please! I don't want to think he's out there all alone at this hour of the night!" That was enough for Mitsuki to drop the phone and looked down in utter disbelief. So that was Izuku who defended Akane from her son.
She quickly picked up the phone and begin to calm Inko down. "Inko, relax. Take deep breaths. You gotta stay focused because now it's very crucial to know exactly where Midoriya is. First, I need to talk to my son about what he did." Mitsuki said stoically yet subtly with a hint of ire behind it. "And...I'm sorry he's not here with us…" That was all Mitsuki needed to say without dragging this any further. One could tell that behind the other line Inko's silence is enough to put the entire room in dire tension.
"I-I see…" Inko's words has gotten cold and emotionless. Now, that got both Mitsuki and Masaru to freeze up at the sudden tone from her. Both of them couldn't help but feel this overwhelming chill running down their spines. "Where is your son...Mitsuki…" The ash blonde mother eyes grew wide as she slowly hung up the phone.
"Shit…" That was all she could describe at the situation her son put himself into.
And on cue, her son stepped inside the house with a smug grin on his face feeling good about himself of showing the damn nerd his place. "Oi old hag! I'm hungry!" He yelled somewhat proudly until Mitsuki got up on him and back hands him straight to the front door. That instantly shocked the smaller ash blonde not understanding what that was for. In fact, his mother never hit him this way other than getting a quick bonk on the head. He stared at his mother and what he saw scared him. "What was that for?…" He asked still confused and afraid to raise his voice at his own mother.
"Where is Izuku?! Katsuki Bakugou?!" Mitsuki venomously asked crossing her arms in utter rage. "You better tell me exactly what happened back at the local creek!"
The young Pomeranian widen his eyes while coming up with an elaborate lie to get himself out of this predicament. "Well, uh you see, I kinda forgot to tell that nerd to come back home but he decided to keep running around that stupid pla-" He was cut off with a harsh slap to his face.
"Don't you lie to me! I was already notified by Akane Chan about what you did to Izuku! I called his mother to see whether he got home safely! Turns out he wasn't! Care to explain?" His mother growled while grabbing her son and dragged him into Masaru's car. "We're going to find Izuku before his mother decided to try and hunt you down for what you did!"
That instantly appalled the explosion quirk user. Did that worthless Dotty actually snitched on him?! He internally wanted to curse, shout, and point fingers but at this point he couldn't find ways to justify himself in this dire predicament. Now caught red handed by his own stupidity and pride. Katsuki grew even more enraged towards both Deku and Dotty for what they had done. He wasn't supposed to get caught! He'd made sure that Dotty wasn't going to. As for Deku, he knew he wouldn't let his mom get to him since he foolishly wanted to deal with their problems alone. Now, all he could do is trying to find that worthless Deku so he can save face and not deal with Auntie Inko's impending wrath.
[Back At the Unknown Cabin]
Once Izuku had his fill, he slowly glance at both his bandaged arms and body while feeling the intense burning pain. He hissed while trying to get up but failed horribly. "Easy there bud, you shouldn't move just yet. Your burn marks are slowly being healed by my ointment I applied on them." The woman warned while taking the bowl and placed it in a metal bucket filled with soapy water.
"I-" Izuku wanted to say something, but the woman interrupted.
"No need to say your thanks...I did what anyone should do when someone's in danger." She said which made Izuku pause and thought about that. He clearly did the same for the girl, but in doing so got him into this situation now.
When Izuku took a glance at the window right by the dining area. He could tell he's in uncharted territory. "Um, do you happen to know where I am? And may I ask who you are?" The young, freckled boy asked politely while feeling a tad bit uneasy trying his best to word his questions towards this stranger.
The crimson eyed woman let out a small chuckle while she looked at him with a mirthful smile. "Unfortunately, you'll get your answers later. Right now, you're clearly not healed enough to stand so I would suggest getting some rest."
When the woman settle herself, Izuku could only slump and sigh heavily at how outmatched he was against his ex-friend. He knew of the outcome and yet he honestly wished he'd done much better than that. At least the girl is safe from them. Then it got him thinking, how come he never seen her when he's hanging out with Katsuki before his quirk manifested?
His internal muttering came to a stop when the woman slowly sat right next to him with a jar filled with some gooey green substance inside. "Alright kid lift up your arms for me." The freckled boy raises an eyebrow but sighed as he did so willingly. The mysterious woman slowly unwrapped the used bandages off his arms gently so his skin won't feel any irritation. Right after that, she applied the green substance onto the most obvious burn marks.
Izuku hissed slightly while keeping his composure steady in order for the lady to heal him properly. When that's done, she took a new bandage wrap out from her back pocket and proceeded to wrap around Izuku's arms neatly until it's fully covered. "There that should last another week." The woman smiled warmly while going back to her usual indifferent face. "So, my answers to your questions. Well, to put it simply we're out in a restricted location that's outside of the city grid from Musutafu. And for me, my name is Falsha Utobe also formally known as the Spirit Heroine: Morally.
There was a long pause, until Izuku shouted with all his might while pointing straight at the wincing former pro hero. "Wait?! You're MORALLY?! The hero who inspires and rallies other pro heroes into pushing their limits and going plus ultra?! The legendary hero who can go toe to toe with All Might himself?! You're an inspiration to literally everyone especially the quirkless community! Oh my god! Oh my god! I can't!" Izuku in a state of fan boy crisis couldn't stop gushing over the accomplishments of Morally while the older woman sports a massive sweat drop on the back of her head. Jeez this kid is a freaking obsessed hero fanboy. Falsha thought before clearing her throat to get the boys attention.
"So kid, what is your name? And do you mind if I ask how you got in such a state like that" Falsha asked questioning his injuries hoping her implied thoughts are wrong.
"Izuku, Izuku Midoriya." Izuku said as he looked at his bandaged body giving off a huge sigh looking up to the former pro hero and come clean. "Well, you see Utobe San. I was doing what any hero should do…" Izuku still contemplate on whether he should tell her that he's quirkless. In his early years he's been discriminated and treated like he's scum on this world just because he's different and not have powers like the quirked community. Even small-time heroes looked at him with contempt, so he's uncertain of her thoughts.
Falsha waved her hands, allowing Izuku to continue. "Go on kid, no need to make this anymore suspenseful." Falsha gave him a small smirk at the jab of his use for dramatics.
The green haired boy could only rub the back of his head in embarrassment for dragging this any longer. "Right, well like I said before. I was trying to keep a certain angry Pomeranian from bullying and hurting an innocent quirkless girl. I kind of got a hit in and manage to get the girl out of danger…" Izuku once again hissed the more he tried to show his point by doing some hand gestures to prove his claim. "And as you can see, I was outmatched. I never stood a chance against a very powerful and flashy quirk user." Izuku said without mentioning his ex-friends name in order to not let others get involved and allowing himself to handle this problem solo.
Falsha raised an eyebrow until she asks a very simple question that Izuku feared. "Why didn't you use your quirk? That would have saved you the trouble from all those injuries."
Now there's no turning back, he needed to tell her his burden. No matter what, if she would see him just like the way others feel about him it would hurt him so much more. And so Izuku stood up preparing to drop the bomb on her. "The thing is Utobe San. I'm quirkless."
There was another pause until Izuku could feel a tinge chill spreading across the entire interior of the living room. This intense atmosphere became so dense, Izuku couldn't help but hyperventilate at such a malicious feeling. Though it wasn't placed on him, yet this pressure continued to wreak havoc until it died down. The small, freckled boy finally took a deep breath and stared directly at Falsha. The older woman places her hand on his shoulder while setting her other hand onto his head with a sad expression. "Is this true?" She asked with a sorrowed tone.
Izuku absently nodded quite stunned at how hurt Falsha is expressing. Suddenly, he felt a tightness around him. To his shock, the former pro hero made her way in and given Izuku a tight embrace. The broccoli haired boy could hear Falsha sniffling while nuzzling his cheeks. "You poor boy...To think you have done everything you can to save others despite your down bringing. Do you have any idea how inspiring that is?" Falsha slowly moved back to give the young boy some breathing room and continued. "With the way you handle yourself, not letting others tell you what you can or can't do. Even going out of your way to save those who scorned you!" She got up and pointed down at him with her trademark rallying pose. "With your gutsy attitude, your high-spirited convictions, and your overall drive to do what's right! You have the spirit of a true hero Izuku Midoriya!"
That declaration coming from Falsha instantly broke Izuku not out of despair, but with overwhelming joy and pride knowing that there is someone out there who truly believed in him of becoming a hero. Izuku launched himself onto Falsha and thanked her repeatedly while tears start to flow out from his eyes. Falsha smiled warmly at him.
After letting out all his emotions, Izuku soon began to wonder. "Oh um, I know it's strange for me to ask you this Utobe San but what exactly is your quirk?" He asked before answering that himself. "Is it some sort of strength enhancement, or maybe an emitter quirk since you start to sprout what looks like blue flames all around you?"
Ah, now that is one question Falsha is willing to answer for her soon to be pupil. And she seems to be snickering to what would happen if she told him the actual truth of her so-called "quirk". This confuses Izuku until she said something that utterly pushed Izuku over the edge in a comical fashion. "The thing is my boy; the powers you saw me use is not actually a quirk." She stated grinning widely.
Another long pause in which Izuku tried to work the gears in his head in order to process what Falsha said until he exclaimed loudly. "W-wait, WHAT?!"
"You heard me, this power is only exclusive to quirkless people, and it takes ALOT of hard work and hellish training in order to access it." The silver haired woman said while continuing to snicker at the way Izuku is handling all this seemingly impossible information.
For the first time Izuku continued to stutter and blankly looked at her in absolute disbelief. "T-Then if that's the case then you're actually…"
Falsha playfully shrugged and just bluntly dropped her own bomb onto the poor mentally questioning boy. "I'm actually quirkless, yes."
There was a huge flop. Izuku Midoriya has fallen and wouldn't be waking up anytime soon. Falsha could only chuckle and shook her head in amusement. "I hope you're ready for this Midoriya because now I can entrust my hopes and dreams to you."
Author's Note:
Ah yes as you can see, I've placed two new characters into this what if scenario. I know it may go into a different direction compared to the anime and manga adaptation but like I said this is a what if scenario. However, in order for this what if to work I needed to add the necessary characters who are similar to the characters from my original story; Kosetsu No Unmei to benefit Izuku into getting spiritua.
As for Bakugou? Yeah well, I kind of figured I will give him an antagonistic role here only temporary. He's not that bad in terms of his way of handling things in the mha verse but let's be honest here. He really got away with the things he did to those he treated horribly especially for Izuku Midoriya in the start of the anime and manga. So, the guy will get his redemption in this what if fanfiction, but he does need to face legit consequences for his vile actions.
