[Hello Everyone! Welcome back to another fanfiction, written by yours truly, Owen. It's been a while since I have written anything but luckily I wanted to try my hand at writing a Winter x Kinkajou story! And best of all, a concept immediately came to mind when I thought of our favorite Icewing and Rainwing couple! Whenever I write my fics, I like to have a concept to write about so the narrative has structure. Hence why Sunny Skies and Butterflies was about a date. Here, I want to try my hand at something novel and different: A play directly inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet but with a twist of Edgar Allan Poe's Annabelle. I also took great inspiration from Alesana's The Emptiness when it came time to write this. I would like to inform you all about a couple of things.]
[Originally, this story idea was going to be a sequel to Sunny Skies and Butterflies but with Snowfall in the mix as a rival to Sunny. However, after much evaluation and critical thinking, I decided it was best to make this tale about Winjou. The main reason was that I was getting into the Winter x Kinkajou ship. I also wanted to dedicate this fanfiction to another Fanfiction writer I hold much respect. I won't say his/her name but you might know who it is I am talking about. Much regards to that person. Finally, I would like to inform you that this story is an indirect spinoff-sequel to Sunny Skies. Yes, there will be nods to that story but I like to give all stories I read their respective individuality. Just needed to get that out of my system.]
[Let's get started, shall we? Here's to A Serenade Of Scales]
Thespian.
Never had Winter imagined his Rainwing of a lady love would become someone who adored the spotlight. How foolish he was when the day came for Kinkajou to announce to Winter that she now had a job. At first, Winter gave her a simple smile to show his support (showing his emotions was still a new concept to him), and Kinkajou graciously accepted it. The former royal Icewing had promised himself he would do a better job being supportive as he knew this was probably a big deal to his partner. Luckily, Kinkajou had offered him an opportunity. Without a second thought, Winter had fallen right into his girlfriend's trap.
And what a dupe he was when Kinkajou revealed what was behind her back.
Flash forward to the present.
"A show?!?!" Winter yelped.
Winter was in the official Sanctuary Theatre, which had recently been made and opened. Kinkajou had invited The Jade Winglet to announce that Kinkajou was going to star in Sanctuary's first annual play, written by Winter's human friend, Daffodil. Winter had never expected much of his former pet but a play written by the likes of her wasn't something he ever thought she would do.
Life was so full of surprises now that he was free from his former life. Winter had grown to accept this but the one thing he hadn't expected was that he was going to be a star in the play.
Qibli, Daffodil, and Kinkajou were failing miserably to hold in their laughter.
"Yep!!!" Kinkajou beamed brightly. Her scales had morphed into a bright shade of pink, almost magenta-colored. Daffodil was still laughing at her dragon's expense but something told Winter she played a role in this little scheme. One thing he learned from his studies was that one should never underestimate the potential of humans.
"Kinkajou, why of all places did you announce that I would be a part of this little show you're putting on?"
The rainwing grinned with mischief. "What can I say? You did say I was full of surprises!"
"Kinkajou, dear. That still doesn't answer my question."
The excitement was still present in the room. Although Winter had mellowed out during his time with The Talons Of Peace, there was still something that generally annoyed him. This was one of them. Being patient wasn't his strong suit. Dealing with his friends' antics was another.
Daffodil finally stepped in. "Let me explain, Ice-brain. Before you get your claws twisted in a knot, I was inspired to write this after my experience with you. I modeled the character you will be playing, The Lover, after my time with you. Kinkajou and I have been planning this since I took the mantle of being Sanctuary's Human Representative. I want you to star in this, Winter."
In the claws of Kinkajou was a flyer, made from what Winter could guess was a scroll. Displayed on the parchment was what Winter guessed was an advertisement for the play. Even though Kinkajou wasn't anywhere close enough to Moon's skill in painting, his Rainwing partner utterly sucked when it came to grammar. Something she would need to work on with Turtle.

Speaking of Turtle, it seemed like he wasn't the only one who winced at Kinkajou's spelling. The young Seawing cringed slightly but gave a reassuring smile to the vibrant Rainwing. Thankfully, she didn't seem to notice anything.
"Well…"
Winter snapped his thoughts back towards reality. Qibli had gently shaken him, with a snicker. Winter resumed his gaze towards Kinkajou and he noticed she had the biggest grin cast upon her.
"Well, what?", he asked.
"Well, what do you feel about it? Are you up for it?"
"Up for the role?"
Kinkajou nodded excitingly. "I would love it if you would do it, Winter! Just think about it, us two on a stage! Performing underneath a starlit sky! Acting jointly as a team, along with our friends! The crowd is in awe, teary-eyed from the performance!"
Or we either get booed at and get a faceful of tomatoes, Winter thought cynically. Throughout his life, he was always the laughing stock of the family. The disappointing failure, the lowest of the low. He was not going to do this little stage play Kinkajou and Daffodil were hosting.
But then again, Winter could see how important this was to them. Kinkajou especially since it seemed like she put a lot of effort into this. The poster she made was evidence; Sure the grammar needed some work but the artwork wasn't bad. Very precise coloring and had a polished look to it whenever it shined in the light. Something Kinkajou would do.
Plus, he did need to spend more time with his mate. The two of them have been busy lately with their lives, as Sanctuary needed Winter's attention twenty-four-seven. Getting away from his responsibilities temporarily would be a benefit to him. A benefit for both of them.
Besides, Sanctuary was in a time of peace. The Undauntable Lord was now helping to make amends with the Dragon tribes and so far, no one has complained about the young Lord. Everyone except The Pyrrhian Ambassador, Wren.
Maybe this was something worth doing.
After a silencing moment of thought, Winter caved in. "Alright, I'll do it. Give me the script so I can go over it tonight."
He had expected his girlfriend to give him the script right then and there but to his shock, Kinkajou merely laughed.
"Oh, you silly Icewing! Winter, all you need to do is be here before noon. Can you do that?"
"That doesn't sound too bad."
Kinkajou excitedly jumped in joy. "Neato! See you there."
As Winter walked out of the theatre, something came to his mind. He wasn't sure what but he felt he was going to either regret this… or he was walking into a trap. Whatever the case may be, he hoped it would be in his favor.
After all, being in a play wasn't going to be that bad… Right? All he was going to be doing tomorrow was reading a fanfiction his girlfriend made.
Little did Winter know though how wrong he was.
