Dorothy and Madison kept on walking as the dogs were with them. Dorothy looked at Madison as she was fiddling and looking at the necklace. "Something wrong, Madison?" Dorothy asked.
"It's just that... there's so many questions about the necklace. Why did the gem turn from an Emerald to a Sapphire? And what powers does the necklace have that Glinda told me about?" she said as she looked at the necklace. "I was wondering about that too. Including the slippers. I don't know why the witch want them." said Dorothy. "Maybe... maybe we'll find out about this together and learn about it on this journey." said Madison and Dorothy nod her head.
As they kept on going, they came to a field of corn that Madison was familiar to this scene and saw different crossroads. "Follow the Yellow Brick Road? Follow the Yellow...?" Dorothy looked at the crossroads as starting to feel lost along with her friend, "Now which way do we go?" "If only Glinda could of give us a map, which would have been helpful." said Madison.
"Pardon me! That way is a very nice way." a voice spoke. The girls looked around, wondering where the voice came from, but Madison knew as she looked at a familiar scarecrow, hanging on a pole with his arm out like he's pointing. "Who said that?" Dorothy spoke and the dogs were barking at the scarecrow.
"Shh! Shh! Abby!" said Madison as she kneels down to pet her dog to calm her down. "Don't be silly, you two. Scarecrows don't talk." said Dorothy. "It's pleasant down that way too." a voice spoke. "Uh, Dorothy..." Madison spoke as she tried to tell her something. Dorothy looked back at the scarecrow again and saw that his arm was pointing a different direction.
Dorothy was starting to get concern but also suspicious. "That's funny. Wasn't he pointing the other way?" she asked. Madison didn't look at her, but she nods to the answer. "Of course, people do go both ways." the voice spoke again. Dorothy looked back at the scarecrow again but saw him crossing his arms as he was pointing to different paths. Dorothy now realized that the scarecrow did speak and walked towards him along with Madison.
"Why, you did say something, didn't you?" Dorothy asked. Madison had no words to say as the scarecrow shook his head and then nods. "You're really confusing us." said Madison. "Are you doing that on purpose, or can't you make up your mind?" Dorothy asked.
"That's the trouble. I can't make my mind. I haven't got a brain. Only straw." said the Scarecrow as he shows the straw under his hat to the girls. "How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?" Dorothy asked.
" I don't know. Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?" the Scarecrow asked. "He's got a point." said Madison as she looked at Dorothy. "Yes, I guess you're right." she said and walks over the fence to the cornfield. "Well, we haven't really met properly, have we?" she asked. "Why, no." he answered.
"How do you do?" the girls asked together. "How do you do?" "Very well, thank you." said Dorothy as the girls both smiled to him.
"Oh, I'm not feeling at all well. You see, it's very tedious being stuck up here all day long with a pole up your back." said Scarecrow as he frowned. 'Must be painful when he sleeps.' Madison thought. "Oh, dear. That must be terribly uncomfortable. Can't you get down?" Dorothy asked in concern.
"Down? No, you see, I'm well. I'm..." the Scarecrow tries to explain but the girls looked at each other and then went behind the pole. "Oh, well, here. Let us help you." said Dorothy. "Oh, that's very kind of you. Very kind." he said as he was grateful.
"What do you think Dorothy?" Madison asked as her friend was trying to find some way to get Scarecrow down. "Well... Oh dear, I don't quite see how we..."
"Of course, I'm not bright about doing things but if you just bend the nail down in the back, maybe I'll slip off and..." "Oh yes!" the girls quickly pulled the nail out together and saw the Scarecrow fall with some of the straw coming out of him.
"Oh dear!" said Madison as she saw the Scarecrow fell and the girls ran to him. "Whoops! There goes some of me again!" The Scarecrow chuckled. "Oh, does it hurt you?" Dorothy asked as she watched him putting the straw in his shirt.
"Oh, no. I just keep picking it up and putting it back in again." he chuckled and stand up, "My! It's good to be free!" The Scarecrow spin happily until he fell over the fence that cause Madison to gasp and Dorothy to scream. They quickly rushed to him to see if he's alright. "Did I scare you two?" he asked.
"No, not really." said Madison. "We thought you hurt yourself." said Dorothy. "But I didn't scare you both?" he asked but the girls shook their heads. "No, of course not." said Dorothy. Scarecrow looked down with disappointment. "Didn't think so."
A crow flew by and perched the fence beside them and cawed. It then hopped onto the Scarecrow's arm. "Boo! Scat! Boo!" shouted but the crow didn't flee as it was pecking on the straw from his collar. Abby growled and barked at the crow and then it flew away.
"You see? I can't even scare a crow. They come from miles around just to eat in my field and laugh at my face. Oh, I'm a failure, because, I haven't got a brain!" said Scarecrow as he sadly looked down.
The girls looked at each other and then looked back at him. "Well, what would you do with a brain if you had one?" Dorothy asked. "I was wondering about that too." said Madison. The Scarecrow looked at them and spoke, "Do? Why if I had a brain, I could..."
Scarecrow: (singing) I could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts are busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
I'd unravel every riddle
For my individdle
In trouble or in pain
Girls: With the thoughts that you'll be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If you only have a brain
Scarecrow: Oh, I could tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think of things I never thunk before,
And then I'd sit
And think some more
I would not be just a nuffin'
My head all full of stuffin'
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain!
The Scarecrow dance a bit to his song until he fell to the ground as the straw fell off of him again. The girls quickly rushed to him to help him. "That was amazing!" said Madison as she gathered the straw. "Wonderful!" said Dorothy as she put the straw back in him, "Why, if our scarecrow back in Kansas could do that the crows would be scared to pieces!" "Especially in West Virginia."
The Scarecrow looked at them. "They would?" he asked and the girls nod, "Where are Kansas and West Virginia?" "That's where we live, and we need to get back there so badly." said Madison. "We're going to the Emerald City to get the Wizard of Oz to help us." said Dorothy.
"You're going to see a wizard?" The Scarecrow asked again and the girls nod, "Do you think if I went, this wizard would give me brains?" "I'm sure he will. What do you think Dorothy?" Madison asked. "Well... I couldn't say. But even if he didn't, you'd be no worse off than you are now." "Yes, that's true." said Scarecrow.
"But maybe you better not. We've got a witch who is mad at us, and you might get into trouble." said Dorothy. "Oh yeah. I forgot about her." said Madison. The Scarecrow scoffed. "Witch? I'm not afraid of a witch! I'm not afraid of anything!" he said but looked around and whispered to the girls, "Except a lighted match."
"I don't blame you for that." said Dorothy. "I don't blame you either." said Madison. "But I'd face a whole box of them for the chance of getting some brains. Look, I won't be any trouble, because I don't eat a thing. And I won't try to manage things, because I can't think. Won't you take me with you?" he asked.
Dorothy looked at Madison. She smiled and nod and then the two looked back at them. "Why, of course we will!" Dorothy answered. "Hooray! We're off to see a wizard!" said the Scarecrow as he gets up happily but started to stumble but the girls helped him up. "Careful now!" said Madison. "You're not starting out very well." said Dorothy. "Oh, I'll try! Really, I will." said Scarecrow. "To Oz?" the girls asked. "To Oz!" he replied.
