CHAPTER EIGHT

"So she's living with you now?"

Dean nodded as he shouldered his phone and rooted around in the fridge.

"Yeah, Bobby. She's only been here a couple 'a days but she seems to be settling in okay."

He grinned when he finally found what he'd been searching for. He pulled the bottle out and snapped the cap off before taking a swing.

"How she and the angels getting along?" Bobby asked.

Dean chuckled. He pulled a chair out and sat down. He shifted his phone back to his hand.

"She and Gabriel get along great! That pipsqueak has turned all his attention on Kalen. He's been spending a shit ton of time with her. If I'd known it'd be that easy to get him to leave me alone, I'd have brought in a little sister a lot sooner," Dean answered.

"What about Cas?" Bobby questioned.

"What about him?" Dean asked.

Dean heard a low growl and grumble that sounded something like, "Stupid idjit."

"Dean, I thought you told me Cas didn't exactly get along with her," Bobby explained.

The hunter shrugged while leaning back in his chair. He tapped his bottle with his free hand.

"He's fine, Bobby. You don't have to worry," Dean said.

"Hmm." Pause. "Hey, Dean?"

"Yeah, Bobby?"

"She said anything about me?"

Dean frowned with his focus on nothing in particular.

"Nah. Only thing she mentioned was she wouldn't mind having dinner with you again."

Dean thought he heard a sigh of relief from the older hunter.

"Everything okay, Bobby?"

"Yeah. Yeah. Everything's good, Dean. I will have you over for another meal. But hey I'm going to be in the area. You want to come help me something?"

Dean took a sip of his drink before giving his affirmation.

"Good. I'll call you back with details of where to meet me."

"Okay, Bobby. See you soon."

/…/

Sam tried to hold down the groan, but when Gabriel did that trick with his tongue, there was no holding back. Gabriel pulled him closer as he stepped in between his open legs. He felt the archangel smile into the kiss as he raked his fingers through his hair and over his scalp.

"This really is a fascinating book."

The two pulled away so fast it was a wonder neither got whiplash. A quick eye dart around the room located the owner of the voice. Sitting curled up in an armchair was Kalen. There was a book held up in front of her face which she lowered with a secretive smile on her face.

"How…uh…how long have you been there?" Sam asked.

He was almost afraid of the answer when he spotted a Gabriel-like glint to her eyes. She closed the book after marking her page.

"I've only been here a few minutes, Sam. Although I am curious if you make a habit out of making out in the middle of the library," she queried.

"No."

"Not yet."

Sam threw an annoyed look at Gabriel who only smiled in return. Kalen leaned forward in her seat with the book on her lap.

"I'm actually a little surprised," she said.

"Dean is out helping Bobby and Castiel went with him," Sam sighed.

Kalen chuckled.

"Not about that," she replied.

Sam ignored the familiar crinkling sound of a chocolate bar being unwrapped behind him.

"So what were you surprised about?" Sam asked.

"Well, it's about Gabriel," Kalen said.

Sam raised an eyebrow as he turned to look at Gabriel. The archangel had a mixture of confusion and curiosity on his face as he chewed on his mouthful of chocolate.

"What's up, kid?" he asked.

"Well, I figure you're probably one of the oldest beings in the world. Possibly even the universe," Kalen suggested.

When Gabriel nodded, the growing grin on her face should have warned him.

"Well, I'm just surprised a being that old could still get it up."

Sam's soft gasp was deafened by the book from Kalen's lap plopping to the ground as she disappeared. He turned back to Gabriel who disappeared a second later yelling, "Come back here!"

Sam's mouth twitched as he tried to figure out how he felt about Kalen's statement. He finally settled on releasing a small chuckle as he retrieved the book from the floor. Sam smiled when he noticed the book was "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf. Instead of putting it away, he walked to Kalen's room to leave it there.

He found Marbles standing up from his bed and stretching with a big yawn.

"Hi, Marbles. Want to go for a walk, boy?" he asked.

The canine let out a small whiny woof that Sam took to mean as a yes. The two walked down the hall, up the stairs, and out the door. Sam figured Kalen was probably popping up somewhere else with Gabriel probably not far behind her.

He felt like Kalen was fitting in nice with the family.

Except with Cas.

It hadn't escaped his notice, or anyone else's for that matter, that Kalen and Cas could only tolerate being in the same room. The two tended not to speak to each other. Sure, they would pass things like food at the dinner table and acknowledge each other's presence with a nod.

I just hope it gets better with time, Sam thought.

Marbles reached up to playfully mouth at Sam's sleeve, gaining a smile out of him. He wondered if Cas and Gabriel could see Marbles' true form. He sometimes caught Cas giving the canine a guarded look. They walked in the woods for a while with Marbles occasionally stop to relieve himself. He would sometimes retrieve a stick and bring it to Sam to throw.

When they returned to the bunker, Sam found Gabriel and Kalen in the hallway. Gabriel had the female in a headlock while shaking her. Sam could tell by their body language that it was nothing more than two siblings playing around.

"Hey guys? A little help here?" he called.

The pair turned their attention to him before suddenly collapsing on the ground laughing. He huffed before carefully moving around them and down the hall. He was just passing Dean's door when he heard it open and shut.

"Sam?"

Sighing, the taller hunter turned around.

"Ye…Yeah, Dean?"

Dean pointed behind him.

"Why are you giving the Hell Hound a piggyback ride?" Dean asked, trying not to laugh.

Sam glared as he heard the canine whine in his ear. He readjusted the canine before turning away and walking to Kalen's room.

"Shut up, jerk."

"Bitch."

When he got to Kalen's room, Sam knelt down to help the dog down. Once back on his paws, Marbles licked the side of his face.

"Yeah, yeah. You're a good boy," Sam said, running his hand back and forth over the canine's head.
