Tails: [Teary] What are you d-doing here?

Shadow: Sonic told me everything. He went to go confront Fiona and asked me to check on you. I also came to apologize for...

But before he could say anything else, Tails wrapped his arms around him making Shadow sit down on the couch as well. He started sobbing again. His white muzzle stained with tears.

Tails: [Sobbing] I-I loved her. But she didn't feel the same way. She was just pretending to love me. She didn't even care.

Shadow wanted to tell Tails to get off him but couldn't. Something change him. Like he now had a soft spot in his heart. So instead, he wrapped his arms around the sad little fox and pulled him close to his chest.

Shadow: Shhhh. Take it easy, my friend. Shadow's gotcha.

Tails: [Sobbing] W-Why would you understand h-h-how I feel? You don't c-care a-a-about any-anyone.

Shadow: That was the old me. I do care about others. I just never had a soft spot in my heart. You see, I also went through heartbreak in my life. And once I met you, Sonic and the others my life brighten up. And surprisingly, so did my mood. So, you see, I know how it feels to be heartbroken, Miles.

Tails was shocked as Shadow wiped away his tears with a small smile on his face. He laid down on Shadow's lap which made Shadow blush a little bit but he quickly brushed it off and started rubbing is back in slow circles.

Tails: [crying] S-Shads, thank you. And please, call me Tails.

Hearing his nickname made Shadow blush again. This time a little harder. Only Sonic had used his nickname a few times.

Shadow: A-Anytime...Tails. Anytime. Are you feeling any better?

Tails: M-Maybe a little. I-I do f-feel t-tired though...

With that Tails fell asleep on Shadow's lap. Shadow had never had this experience before so he was surprised. He kept rubbing Tails' back softly so he wouldn't wake him up. An hour later Sonic came back. Tails was still sleeping on Shadow's lap when he walked in.

Sonic: [Whispers] So, I see that you got him to relax, Shads.

Shadow: [Whispers] I know. But maybe we should put him to bed now.

Sonic: [Whispers] Oh. Ok. But can you stay just for a sec?

Shadow: [Whispers] Sure. I guess.

Sonic picked Tails up from Shadow and took him up to his room. When he came back, he saw Shadow thinking with his usual grumpy expression looking down at the floor.

Sonic: You ok? You look like you got something on your mind.

Shadow: Fiona. She's the reason why I changed. She tough me what it means to love. To have a soft heart. To not just be cold and hurt others. That's what...Maria would've wanted. She reminded me of her and yet she hurt your friend.

Sonic: Yeah. She did. I just want Tails to be ok. He's like my lil bro. And I can't take watching him hurt.

Shadow placed his hand on top of Sonic's and looked up at him.

Shadow: I know how you feel. But I can't pretend that I understand. I've never been in a relationship with anyone.

Sonic: I'm sure you'll find someone. I'm more worried about Tails. I've seen him upset before but not like this.

Shadow: Tails seems really important to Sonic in a certain way. Maybe I should try to help him before things get worse.
