Despite what most people thought, Kaitou Kid was an omega. Sure, the first Kid - Kuroba Toichi - had been an alpha, not that anyone knew it for certain as he had used scent blockers during his heists. But it had always been assumed, due to his mannerisms. But Toichi was the only alpha Kid. Jii had briefly taken over the Kid role, and he had been a beta. Then Kaito permanently took it, and, well, he was an omega.

Despite what others thought of omegas, though, the role of Kaitou Kid wasn't a challenge to Kaito. In fact, he enjoyed it. At times, it was a fight against his instincts, but as long as Kaito didn't schedule a heist on the same day as one of his heats, he was fine. Kaito had a whole calendar laid out stating the time of his next heat, and he used it to his advantage. He made sure that Kid's patterns were irregular enough that the taskforce wouldn't find out about the heat breaks, and in the end, very few people ever suspected.

Kudo Shinichi was one of the few.

The alpha's suspicion had started back when he was Edogawa Conan. As Conan, he had gotten very close to Kaito, and despite having shrunk, his instincts were still frighteningly good. He had sniffed out Kaito's omega scent, but despite that, he had never done a thing about it. That made Kaito smile fondly whenever he thought of the detective. He never thought before that he would be able to place so much trust in a detective, but Kudo Shinichi was good at defying expectations. It didn't take Kaito long to realize that he was in love with Shinichi.

When he did, he decided not to act on said feelings. It was too risky. Of course, Kaito didn't think Shinichi would turn him in, but what if the alpha didn't return his feelings? What if, by confessing, he ruined that strange relationship they already had? He couldn't do it.

At the next heist, Kaito felt a familiar excitement at seeing a distinctive cowlick in the crowd below. Seeing the two girls next to him confirmed that yes, that was Shinichi. Shinichi would be coming after him again. Quietly, he put on his disguise and slipped into the crowd. No one seemed suspicious of him, and he quickly began cheering for Kid like the rest of the crowd. It was easy to find a place right next to Sonoko, whom he thought might have been cheering the loudest.

"You got this, Kid-sama!" She cried out. "You can steal this jewel, even with this detective geek chasing after you!"

"Sonoko," Shinichi sighed, but didn't say anything else.

Ran gave her friend a pained look. "Sonoko… Kaitou Kid is a thief. He's going to steal your uncle's jewels. You shouldn't be cheering for him!"

"But he's so cool when he's doing it!" Sonoko protested. "Besides, it's not like it's going to be a problem. He returns the jewels in the end, anyways!" Sonoko began to swoon as she said the next words. "Oh, if only a handsome alpha like him would steal a beautiful omega like me with the jewels~!"

Kaito sweatdropped. I'm not an alpha.

Ran and Sonoko were both omegas, that much obvious from their scent. Shinichi seemed to be the only alpha in their usual group, though Kaito had scented other alphas with them, of course. Sera Masumi and Kyogoku Makoto were both alphas. However, Hattori Heiji was a beta, and his girlfriend, Toyama Kazuha, had been an omega.

What Kaito had figured out pretty easily was that alphas were terrifying when they were chasing after him.

"The heist is starting in five minutes," Shinichi spoke up, interrupting the conversation between Ran and Sonoko.

"Yes!" Sonoko cheered. "Let's get closer to the display case!"

"You're still going on about wanting Kid to steal you…?" Ran sighed, but she and Shinichi both followed Sonoko towards the display case.

Kaito grinned. Let's have fun during this heist, Tantei-kun!

The heist was a usual one at first. Kaito stole the jewels, avoided the reaching hands of the taskforce, and ran into the building intending to change to his disguise and walk out of the bathroom unnoticed. And that's where things went wrong.

Kaito's heat started early.

Gasping, Kaito curled up in the corner of a stall, waves of heat wracking through him. Squeezing his eyes shut, he tried to ignore the feelings inside him, but it wasn't possible. The heat had consumed him. He was unable to focus, he was almost in pain. At home, Kaito had methods to make the heat feel better - a warm bath, maybe even inviting his alpha friend Aoko over so her scent could calm him down - but here, in the bathroom stall, he had nothing.

Burying his face in his knees, Kaito was dully aware that his heat scent was going to be strong. Maybe it even reached out of the bathroom. He hoped that no one would try to take advantage of his current state. He realized he was still in his Kid suit, and that really just made it worse.

When would it end?

Then the bathroom door opened and Kaito almost felt his heart stop. This is it, he thought helplessly. This is the moment my life will be ruined.

"Kid, I know it's you."

Kaito's head quickly shot up as he turned towards the sound of the voice. "Tantei-kun?"

"Yeah, it's me," Shinichi replied. "Could you open the stall door?"

Kaito bit his lip, then replied. "Okay." Standing up on shaky legs, he reached towards the stall door and slowly opened it.

Shinichi's scent quickly washed over him, and Kaito almost collapsed in relief. Shinichi reached over to support him and helped him sit back down, before locking the door behind him. "Kid," he muttered. "Are you okay?"

"I-I think so?" Kaito stammered. Oh, that scent felt so good. The pain seemed to be slowly fading away. "I mean, I'm as good as I can be while in heat."

Shinichi rolled his eyes, but seemed to sense the effect his scent had on the omega and moved closer to him. "Idiot. Why did you have a heist if you were this close to being in heat?"

"It's two days early," Kaito argued. "I can't be that cautious all the time." Unconsciously, he laid his head on Shinichi's shoulder. The alpha stiffened, but quickly relaxed and began to soothingly brush Kaito's hair.

"Don't do it again," he murmured. "I won't be here every time."

Kaito chuckled. "I know."

A few moments passed, Kaito's heat pain gradually fading away, before he asked, "You're good at this."

"Good at what?" Shinichi asked.

Kaito rolled his eyes. "You know. Taking care of omegas in heat."

Shinichi let out a soft smile. "Yeah. I help Ran sometimes, when she really needs it. I mean, she usually goes to Masumi now, since they're dating and all, but still, I have experience. I used to help Sonoko too, in fact."

Kaito laughed softly. "That's good." He leaned into Shinichi a bit more, and the detective wrapped his arms around him.

"Do you need anything else, Kid?" Shinichi questioned.

Kaito shook his head. "No, just… stay here a while longer," he whispered.

Shinichi nodded. "Of course."

They stayed together for almost half an hour.

Finally, the heat's effects faded away enough for Kaito to get up on his own. Shinichi still supported him, and Kaito was grateful. Then, after making sure that Kaito could walk on his own, Shinichi let him go. "Are you sure you'll be alright from here?"

Kaito grinned. "Of course! Who do you think I am?"

"An idiot who let himself go into heat during his own heist," Shinichi replied, deadpan. He reached towards his phone and winced. "Oh crap, Ran's been calling me this whole time. What should I tell her?"

"The truth," Kaito suggested. Shinichi jerked his gaze towards him, eyes wide, and Kaito quickly clarified. "I mean, just tell her you helped an omega in heat. You don't have to tell her I'm Kid."

"You're not thinking clearly, Kid," Shinichi muttered.

"Kuroba Kaito," Kaito corrected, and Shinichi's eyes seemed to widen even further.

"You idiot!" Shinichi hissed out. "You're definitely not thinking clearly if you decided to give me your real name! Just… just go, and I'll pretend I didn't hear anything."

Kaito paused, then said, "Maybe I'm really not thinking clearly," he said. "But if, by the next heist, I don't regret telling you my name… I'll tell that to you. And maybe then… we could meet up? Not as a detective and a thief, but as…" His face turned red. Oh no, the heat really was messing with his brain.

Shinichi sighed, then smiled softly. "Yeah, sure. I'll tell Ran I was helping an omega in heat, but you better leave now. Don't forget to change into your disguise."

Kaito nodded, followed his instructions, and returned home.

A week later, when the heat finally faded away, Kaito realized exactly what he had done and screamed into a pillow.

Yet in the end, he still didn't regret telling Shinichi his real name.
