It was a question they were all honestly afraid of. Sure, he is the human one, without powers. Otherwise, he was as innocent as a newborn baby that needed as much happiness as possible to cure his Kryptonian amnesia, now…
Should they tell him the truth? But won't he be so terribly disappointed? Will he still be fine with being the human one? But Lara already confirmed that Jon was more Kryptonian than they all thought? And thinking about it, Clark knew that it was wrong to never let him be scanned, too. They couldn't know if he was maybe just a late bloomer. And Jordan already confessed to them that he was so happy when he thought that Jon got powers, just that his brother does not feel so left out again.
Clark really wished for a private moment with the others to discuss the answer to Jonathan's question before. But that would be too strange if they leave and then return. Jonathan was still shining brighter than the sun and with big eyes. Looking so innocent and happy like a little child that is waiting to unwrap a Christmas-present…
"Ehmm… well…" Clark blushed. He knew Jonathan was fine with being the powerless one. The whole jealousy came because they gave all their attention to Jordan. But how will Jonathan react now? "…ehm…"
"Basically, the same!" suddenly Jordan said. The adults looking on them with big eyes and full of questions.
"Jordan…" his father wanted to interfere. But Jordan continued anyway…
"Yeah, brother… but due to your amnesia you can't use them now. You just don't remember how to activate them! As soon as your amnesia is over you can fly again." Jordan said making his brother even happier. "And now put on some clothes and then we work on you regaining your memory."
"Okay!" Jonathan said happily, finally took the bag with clothes and walked away.
"Jordan, what was that?" Lois asked shocked.
"You tell your brother that he has powers?" Clark added. "Why? What if he gets disappointed when he…"
"What?! I make him happy!" Jordan said, smiling brighter than ever. "I've decided to not to care about how mad he will on me after he regains his memories. After this day, I just want to see him smile again."
The family looked on Jonathan, sitting in a corner and looking through the pack of clothes they brought him. Jonathan had a terrible day… no he had a terrible year… two terrible years to be honest… and he was so happy now. They understood it.
"Happiness activates certain brain parts that set free specific hormones that support the healing process!" Lara said. "I recommend continuing!"
"You recommend lying to him? He will be so mad!" Clark asked shocked. "Jonathan was so mad on me that I didn't tell him the truth for 14 years…"
"I recommend making him happy and support his healing." Lara explained. "That your son is mad on you is your fault! So, you have to deal with the fallout! But now his recovery his more important than your family issues."
"Yeah, you are right!" Clark said, looking on Jonathan again, who was still naked and obviously was not able to decide what to wear. "Jonathan, do you need help?"
"Nothing has our family crest!" Jonathan said.
"Our family crest? Oh, you mean… ehm… On Earth it is uncommon to wear your family crest all the time." Clark realized that Jonathan looked for a Superman-t-shirt or anything else with the house of El crest on it. His mother obviously left a lasting impression on him.
"Oh… okay… What do I usually wear?" Jonathan asked.
With a bright smile, Clark gave Jonathan a t-shirt of the Metropolis Meteors while helping him to dress. Now Jonathan was wearing a t-shirt and training pants, but no socks or shoes. But that was no problem. The new fortress was cozy and well-tempered.
It was still empty, but Clark already brought some stuff to this place. They planned to bring some furniture to this place to make it a bit homier. One of the few things, he already brought here, were some of his old suits and the spaceship, to get it away from the farm as this place was safer. Another thing was a big picnic-blanket he spread over the ground in the fortress to sit on it together. And so, they gathered on the blanket and Clark start to tell Jonathan about his human life, by showing him photos…
As a result of mainly being absent, Clark was only on a few pictures. But they spared that part out…
They told him about his life. Showing him photos of his earlier years…
"What is football?" Jonathan asked.
This question forced everyone to laugh…
"Oh, something you like very much. It's a sport and you are very good in it!" Jordan said. Showing him a photo of his younger self in his football-equipment. And then a photo of both from the team in Smallville… "Oh… here… we were briefly in the same team…"
"Isn't it… cheating?" Jonathan asked confused.
"Cheating?" Jordan asked.
"Yeah… we are Kryptonians! But the others are humans! Isn't it unfair?" Jonathan asked. Nobody ever heard Jonathan calling himself a Kryptonian. So it was a bit confusing.
"Hm… It is!" Jordan confessed. "It was to blend in! I wanted to be part of something."
He starts to think about it… He hated football. But he got into the team just to get respect from the others and get even with guys who bullied him and his brother. His brother was the one who played honestly. Jordan cheated by using his powers. It was just the beginning of Jonathan's downward spiral of being outshined, isolated and feeling relapsed. Jordan realized it was not a good idea to tell him how their teammates treated them, how he broke his arm, how Coach Gaines had no problem to abuse his authority and let him run extra rounds just for hiding Jordan's 'talent' from him. So he skipped that and changed the topic…
"But enough of that… Look that's our grandma!" Jordan said pointing on a picture of them with Martha on the porch. "That was when we were 7!"
"I don't recognize her! I thought this is our grandma!" Jon asked, pointing on Lara who was watching them.
"Well, you have multiple grandmas!" Clark explained. "She is your Kryptonian grandma! And this is your human grandma! She adopted me after I arrived on Earth. She was such a lovely person! I can tell you, I had a lot of luck to crash on her land with my pod. She loved you very much, too."
"Loved? What happed? Did she pass away, like grandma Lara?"
"Yes, two years ago! We all miss her very much!" Clark told and became moody. He took another scrapbook, with pictures of his own youth to show him more. "This is me when I was 12! This is your grandma Martha, and this is your grandfather Jonathan. You are named after him!"
"Oh… where is he?" Jonathan asked and looked around.
"Huh… he passed away long ago… oh my gosh… that are… yeah… 28 years now!" Clark said. He couldn't believe that almost three decades passed since that fateful day. "He was a great man. When you were born, there was no other alternative than naming you after him! Because you are a great person, as well!"
"Oh…" Jonathan had another bright smile on his face. "Can we insert their sun-crystals, too to talk to them?"
"Oh… they… people on Earth don't have sun-crystals." Clark explained. It would had been great if Martha and Jonathan would be here too. Safed on sun-crystals but that was not possible. "I'm sorry!"
"Oh… okay…" Jonathan said browsing threw the scrapbooks. Most pictures were just Jonathan or Jordan. Clark was only on a few. "Where are you?"
"I have to admit I was not present many times." Clark said a bit ashamed. Suddenly he could hear Jonathan's smartphone ringing again…
"Someone is really stubborn!" Jordan said and took the smartphone. It was already the eight missed call, and it was from a number that was only saved as 'TimT'. "TimT? Tim… Timmy Tanner?!"
"Who?" Jonathan asked.
"Oh, he is an old friend of us! He moved to… Oh…" Jordan suddenly remembered what Jonathan said when he stormed down the stairs: That he was going to stay with Timmy Tanner for the night. "Shortly before you lost your memory you wanted to visit him! Wait a sec…"
Jordan held the smartphone in front of Jonathan's face to use the face-recognition to unlock it. Maybe Timmy was waiting for Jonathan…
"…I call him and tell him that you don't come!" Jordan said, lift and left to make a call outside. Luckily the new fortress was able to connect to the phone-service back home.
"Why don't we bring him here, too?" Jonathan asked.
"Oh… ehm… Timmy does not know about this place!" Clark said.
"Why?"
"Because… nobody knows about this place. It is a secret that I am from another planet!"
"Why?"
"Oh… this is a long story…"
"Wait… are we illegally on this planet?" Jonathan asked.
"Oh… no no no! You are fully legal and legit to live on this planet! This is the only home you ever had!"
"Because our old one got destroyed!"
"Yes, exactly!" Clark wasn't used to talk to Jonathan about Kryptonian things. Jonathan always fixed on his humanity. If he would remember everything, he was for sure, Jonathan would say that he does want nothing to do with Krypton, that he is human and never refer himself as a Kryptonian. But Clark had to accept that he was fault for it, too.
He waited too long to tell them. He didn't bring Jonathan to Jor-El and never ever did anything to give Jonathan a chance to adapt to this side of his heritage. His mother was right: Jonathan was Kryptonian, too. He always was! He was born as the son of a Kryptonian. He should have offered Jonathan to show him his fortress. Powers or not… Giving him a sense of this part of him may have prevented that he took the XK. Till today, he had no clue how it really affected him… Not even after he figured out about his drug abuse, he took him to the fortress to scan for the possible side-effects…
Jonathan took another scrapbook which was filled with newspaper-articles.
"Oh, this is you!" Jonathan said to his father.
Clark looked on the article and saw that it was a photo of him as Superman.
"Oh, how do you…" Clark was surprised. Jonathan never recognized him. So how he was able to recognize his alter-ego.
"It's you… just without those glasses!" without his memory, Jonathan seemed to be a lot smarter.
"Oh hehehe… well… that's a long story!"
While Clark starts to tell the story of him being a flying Superhero with secret-identity and all that stuff, Jordan went outside to the terrace and gave his old friend Timmy Tanner a call.
Jordan remembered Timmy Tanner as a friendly, open, hyperactive, tolerant boy. One of the few friends he had who never made fun of his anxiety, or his quirks. He lived next door, and his father was working for the Daily Planet, too. 6 or 7 years ago, Timmy's father was sent to Berlin, to be the Planet's correspondent in Europe! Around a year or more ago, after losing his job at the Planet, the family returned to Metropolis. But he only heard of that… He, Jon and Timmy had sporadic contact via Facebook and Instagram, but hadn't seen each other in person since his return…
After being sure that Jonathan wouldn't hear him, Jordan called him…
"JON?! Oh, what a relieve! How are you? Are you okay?" Timmy Tanner sound worried but seemed to be relieved that he finally got called back.
"Timmy? Timmy Tanner? This is Jordan!"
"Jordan?"
"Yes, Jordan Kent!"
"Where is Jon?" Timmy asked harshly.
"Nice to talk to you, too again after all those years!" Jordan said a bit offended.
"Sorry! Where are you?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Because I am standing in front of your house, and nobody is home!"
"You are in Smallville?"
"Yeah, Jon called me today. Absolutely devastated, crying and desperate. He asked me to stay at my place for a day or two. Yelling that he doesn't endure it anymore and that he must get away from this place. He literally sounded like… like being in danger and that nobody cares. So, I got into my car, drove here to this place to pick him up because he said your father does not want him to learn to drive?"
"We do care! And the driving, well… That's why my dad…" Jordan almost blurted out that his father flew him to the fortress to help him. "…listen, Jon hit his head today so terribly that he got amnesia. We are at the doctor now!"
"What?"
"Timmy, would you please… Oh my gosh! Timmy, did you call the child-protection-service, today?"
"Wait, should I do that?" Timmy asked.
"No! I mean…"
"Jordan, if you are not able to talk freely, shall I call the police? Just give me a signal!"
"No! No police! Jon will be fine! I am fine! There is no reason to… gosh… Timmy, the spare key is under the doormat. You can wait in our house!" Jordan said. "I'll call you back!"
Jordan hangs off and ran back inside…
In the meantime, Clark had told his son Jonathan (despite his worries and his fear the that it would be too much for him) how he, with the help of his kryptonian father, and the support of his human adoptive mother, created the figure of Superman. How Lois came up with the title Superman and why his civilian identity had to remain a secret…
"WOOOWW… You are so cool!" Jonathan said astonished while looking on old photos of his father, using his powers. Clark had to smile. Hearing from his son, who yelled that he hates him just a few hours ago, that he is cool was awesome.
"Aww… I just do what I can do to help and to thank the world for giving me a home. And to show them that I will always support them! You know… Krypton… might be the place I was born on. But Earth is the only home I remember. Your grandmother told you what happened, right?"
"Yeah, she said I can never ever visit Krypton! This is sad… I would like to see what it looked like!" Jonathan said, looking on another newspaper picture with the big headline: 'Superman's new suit'. "Oh… our family crest!"
Clark looked on the article and remembered: "Yeah, that was a weird day. The people didn't care that I saved a lot of people in an exploding gas station. They all just cared more about my new suit."
"Dad!" Jordan came in again and winked to show him that he needs to talk to him. "Could you please…"
"Excuse me, Jonathan! Your mom will tell you more!" Clark said and handed the scrapbook to Lois who continued with stories about their family-life, like his first day of school.
Clark went to his other son and saw how worried he was.
"Dad, I just talked with Timmy Tanner! He is in our house!"
"Why?"
"He wanted to pick up Jon!"
"Gosh… oh, yeah… your brother said something!"
"Dad, I think he called the child-protection-service!"
"Are you sure?"
"He denied it, but he offered to me to call the police!"
"Aww… Oh my gosh… Tell him to feel like home, I go there as soon as we know that your brother is fine!"
Clark tried to forget the visit from the woman of the child protection service. And now even his son's friend thought that he hurts his son. A tear ran down his face. Worse enough that Jonathan believes that they don't care for him. Clark went back again to his son sitting next to his mom, looking over the photos…
They told Jonathan more about his life. But only the good things. The nice moments. They spared him from the many moments, Clark was absent or Jon got otherwise disappointed. And thinking about it, Lois knew a lot of moments Jonathan got disappointed and didn't get the attention he needed…
Lois had to think about that day, her son got dumped by his girlfriend. She later figured out that she cheated on him for weeks. And that with Jordan's bully. Then there was his broken arm. He was so mad. Or that day he tried to help. He just tried to be helpful because he had no heat-vision to repair the damaged truck. And she yelled on him… She later promised to him to help him how it is to be the normal ones in a superpowered family. Now she honestly regrated that she said the 'extraordinary humans'. He wasn't fully human. He never was. Jordan never was. They grew so close together. But she failed to see that it drove apart Jonathan and Clark.
"You are a wonderful son, Jonathan!" Lois explained. "You have done so much to support your brother. We became so dependent on you, what normally shouldn't be. Normally you should be dependent on us… aww… please promise to me to regain your memory fast! There is a lot of stuff we planned together, but never had the chance to…"
Lois was talking about various planned trips. Vacations and excursions they talked about and never made just because Lois was busy with a story, or Clark with being Superman. Trips Jonathan was very excited about but that never happened. They decided to change the topic and tell him other happy things…
"I have a question!" Jonathan said.
"You can ask us everything!" Clark said when he sat down next to him again.
"How can you fly without your glasses? Don't you need them?"
Clark had to laugh. "Oh… them…"
Clark took off his glasses and looked on them. "Well… that's my disguise! The people see what they want to see. When I told you my secret you were so baffed. You couldn't believe it!"
"I didn't know it?"
"Ehm… not always…" Clark confessed. "I told… you and your brother about my double-life after you two found my spaceship under the barn."
"Spaceship?" Jonathan asked. "A real spaceship? Can I see it?"
"Ehm… yeah! Of course! It is here!" Clark said.
The day after the fortress was created, Clark brought the spaceship and his old suits to the fortress. Knowing it would be safer and to get them off the farm. Just in case something happens in Smallville again. And the fortress was a good place to hide this stuff.
Together they led Jonathan to the other room…
The other room had a big gate, that could be opened by command. That's how he was able to get the spaceship into this place. Here it was nicer than in the dark basement, always covered under thick blankets.
Jonathan's eyes were widing in awe when he saw the spaceship standing on a platform, glittering in the bright light of the fortress.
"WOW… This is so cool!" he said.
"Your grandparents build it by themselves!" Clark said proudly. "They were highly regarded scientists on Krypton."
Full of awe, Jonathan went closer to the spaceship to touch it. As soon as Jonathan's finger touched the spaceship a shiver ran across the whole ship and a loud crackle echoed threw the air. Jonathan laughed.
Jordan remembered how they found the spaceship under the barn for the first time and how scared they were back then. His brother was showing absolutely no fear and instead continued touching it just to see it glittering.
"Jonathan… you shouldn't do that. The spaceship does not like it…" Clark said before he suddenly saw a hole forming up in the spaceship…
Everyone could see that Jonathan was able to activate the opening where the crystal was hidden and let it float into his hand, just like Jordan did back then. Clark had always thought that only powered Kryptonians were able to do that. He knew how to do that, Tal knew how to do that, and Jordan once or twice did it. It was just one more proof that Jonathan was like them, too.
Jonathan laughed like a little toddler when he held the crystal in his hand, showing it to his father. Clark just smiled to him and took the crystal to put it back into the spaceship.
"Impressive!" Clark said. "Kryptonian technology is far ahead of Earths…"
"Can it fly?" Jonathan asked.
"Oh,… No, I don't think so. While entering the Earths atmosphere the ship ran out of fuel. And Earth fuel does not work on it." Clark explained. Honestly, he had no clue if the ship was still able to fly.
Jonathan looked around and found Clark's old suits on a table.
"What is that for?" Jonathan asked, pointing on the red trunks.
"OH… That's a funny story!" Clark said.
Before he could explain him that the red trunks were a feature, his grandmother copied from strongman-suits from the circus, suddenly they could hear a phone ringing again. But this time it was not Jonathan's. It was Jordan's! Jordan picked up after seeing that it was a video call from Sarah…
"Hi!" Jordan said after accepting the video call.
"Hi, Jordan… We just… wow… is that the fortress?" Sarah asked when she saw the background.
"OH… yeah… it is…" Jordan said, turning around and holding his phone so that Sarah could see the fortress. "Impressive, isn't it?"
"Boah… this is awesome! MOM! Come, you have to see this!"
Lana appeared on the screen, too.
"Wow, this is even much more impressive than I imagined!" Lana said.
"Lana?" Clark could hear her and speeded into the view. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, we wanted to ask, how is Jonathan?" Sarah said.
"Oh, he will fully recover… He is like a child. So curious and happy…" Clark said.
"Is that a spaceship?" Lana yelled.
"Do you plan to send Jon to space?" Sarah asked a bit shocked.
"No, we don't plan to send Jon to space!" Clark said. He looked to Jonathan who was still admiring his suits and the Kryptonian garments they had here. "Wait a sec…"
Clark and the rest of the family, except Jonathan, went back to the main room to talk to Sarah and Lana without Jonathan listening to them. Explaining them some basic facts of what happened and what they have to do…
"Clark, there was a woman here! From the child-protection-service…" Lana explained but couldn't finish.
"Wow! Is that your new fortress?" suddenly John-Henry appeared on the screen.
"Hey, let me see!" Chrissy was also there and the first thing she spotted was Lara. "Oh my gosh, is that a ghost?"
"It's just a Kryptonian building somewhere! What are you so thrilled about?" Natalie said.
"What is going on at your place?" Clark asked. He could see on the screen that they were all at Lana's place.
"Oh, were drinking coffee together. And then this woman suddenly showed up!" Lana explained.
"Long story!" Clark moaned and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "And this is not a ghost! This is my mother's A.I. Lana she was once in your body…"
Suddenly music was playing…
"What is that?" Lana asked.
Hearing that piano sound, the Kents looked around confused so see where it comes from. Obviously from the fortress itself.
"Mother?!" Clark yelled.
"Quiet, son… Jonathan has another attack!" Lana hissed, before Jonathan entered the room…
Please review and keep well!
