Disclaimer: I don't own H20 or the Hunger Games
Once inside the Justice Building Emma and Ash were marched into separate rooms where they would be allowed one hour to say goodbye to their various loved ones. Emma immediately went for the leather couch that was better than anything her family had, and the Gilberts were one of the wealthiest in District Four. Same could be said for almost anything in this room. She also shuffled around the cushions in the sofa to feel comfortable. If Rikki was here she would have set fire to the room with her heating powers.
Emma though did not want to waste any energy on pointless destruction. She was well aware that District Four was one of wealthier districts and although she had always lived a good life she knew people who starved, like Rikki. Or who lived in a plain home with tasteless food, like Cleo. It wasn't like they showed those parts on television. Also that they were allowed to keep the fruits of their labor was wrong as Emma clearly knew people who had been executed for stealing fish or illegally fishing.
Lewis almost ended up in a heap of trouble a few years back when he was out fishing with a rod he had made and only got away because he managed to land a large fish just when the peacekeeper came to arrest him. In exchange for surrendering the fish he was allowed to go free. Since then Lewis became an agent for peacekeepers who wanted good seafood for themselves.
Lewis had also vouched for them on the day when the three girls had been arrested by the peacekeeper sea patrol around Mako Island after being trapped there because Rikki wanted to test out the boat Zane (the mayor's son) had gifted Cleo buy untying it while she helped him fix the engine. It was the day that they got their abilities to transform into mermaids upon contact with water.
Emma had also later discovered her ability to turn water into ice, a trait she wanted to avoid revealing until the Hunger Games, something that had worked well for Johanna Mason of District Seven. But to think that she could win the games was just false hope as the last two victors had both come from District Two and although District Four had six living victors which was more than almost every district they were still way behind District One and Two.
"Emma, what were you thinking!" Her mother Lisa burst into the room and hugged her daughter. "I know you want to protect your friends but you are not yet ready to fight to the death." Both of them started to sob. Her mother had told her that she was actually once training to be a career back when she was young but she met her dad Niel and chose not to volunteer at 18.
"I know but Rikki and Cleo share a special bond." Emma responded back. "In fact when we turned twelve and Rikki took her first tessera to support herself and her father we promised we would volunteer for her!"
"You are a good swimmer so use that to your advantage." Her younger brother Elliot came up and hugged her which was probably the closest they had been in a while.
Emma then had a session with Elliot telling him that he should stay strong in the years to come since next year would be his first reaping. He would not under any circumstances take out tessera not that the family needed it but she knew Elliot was starting to become interested in girls and would do anything for them, including risking his life.
"Okay your time is up!" A peacekeeper came in to escort her family out. "Remember to stay strong Emma." Her father Niel told her as her family left her. Emma knew that this would certainly be their final interraction.
Unexpectedly her next visitors were Cleo, Rikki & Lewis. Cleo didn't say much mother than hugging her and being conflicted about whether she or Emma should have gone. Lewis and Rikki on the other hand were busy teaching her strategy and how to make it out alive. Lewis, being more of a quiet nerd, was often shouted down by Rikki's more fiery temperament.
After her friends had left Emma did not expect any visitors but she was proven wrong when Zane the Mayor's son entered holding a small box.
"I gather you don't think much of me?" Zane asked her
"No why should I, given how you continue to be a jerk every time in school." Emma responded back.
"Well I have decided that you should wear this as your token." Zane said, opening the box to reveal a gold- plated medallion which appeared thought to be some kind of bird holding an arrow in its talons. The medallion was tied to a leather chain.
"It was my mothers, she wore it on her reapings and gave it to me when she died." Zane continued to explain as Emma held the medallion in her hands. "I want you to have it as a show of good faith. I may not have been the best person for you or your friends growing up, but I feel like I should give myself a chance to redeem myself." Zane continued sounding positive.
"I am sorry Zane, but I can't take it." Emma said, handing the token back to Zane.
Zane put a hand on her shoulder. "Then feel free to return it to me?"
Before Emma could give it back to him Zane had already turned towards the door. "After you win the games." Zan said he closed the door behind him leaving Emma alone in the large room. "Darn it!" Emma said as she slammed her fist in the dark wooden table made out of some type of wood that she didn't know the name of? She wanted to freeze the room and create a blizzard around her*, obviously doing so would attract the attention of the District Authorities and The Capitol. Something she and her friends had promised Lewis to avoid at all costs.
*I have only seen Season 1 & 2 of H20 & I know that their superpowers become stronger in the Season 2 premiere. Emma will use her powers in the HG but they will be used sparingly & she will not be a superhuman.
