A/N: I'd like to give another shout-out to Ryuujin96 not only for following this story, but for following me as well! As I've said a thousand times before, fanfic isn't something I do for the fame, but I'm always happy when I get recognized for my hard work.
Between the end of the previous day and the next, nothing notable happened for Todoroki…that is, until he got a call:
"Shoto Agency, Shoto Todoroki speaking."
"Hi, this is Izuko Midoriya. I had an interview with you yesterday."
"Ah yes, I remember you. What can I do for you?"
"Listen, I wanted to thank you for considering my application and taking some time out of your day to interview me."
"You're welcome, Midoriya. I'm still awaiting the results of your background check, but I'll call you as soon as the results get in."
"Right. Have a nice day!"
"You too. Goodbye."
Todoroki hung up. No sooner had he done so than he got another call from Jane:
"Shoto Agency, Shoto Todoroki speaking."
"Hi Shoto, there are two other young women looking for you."
"Please send them up."
"Will do. Goodbye!"
Todoroki hung up. After doing so, he thought about the applicants he'd gotten thus far. While it wasn't unusual for Hero Agencies to get a good number of women in their ranks, he found it unusual that his first three applicants were women, more so that his next two had shown up together. Nevertheless, he vowed to judge not by sex or gender, but by how qualified they were for the position. Soon enough, he heard knocking on his door.
"Come in," said Todoroki.
The door opened, and in stepped a short young woman with pink cheeks, auburn eyes and matching hair with bobbed ends, the hair on the sides of her face being longer than the rest. She wore a white blouse with a gray suit jacket and matching skirt, plus black pumps.
"Hi, this is the Shoto Agency, right?" asked the woman.
Todoroki nodded. "This is. I'm Shoto Todoroki, founder and leader of the agency."
The woman smiled and waved at Todoroki. "Hi, I'm Ochaco Uraraka! My friend Deko told me about this agency, so I decided to sign up."
"I'm honored that you elected to apply here, but who is this 'Deko' that you refer to?"
Still smiling, Uraraka rubbed the back of her head with her free hand. "Oh…right! She's better known as 'Izuko Midoriya'."
Todoroki stood up and approached Uraraka. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Uraraka."
Todoroki and Uraraka shook hands.
"Please, have a seat," said Todoroki.
Uraraka did so, and Todoroki alternately made eye contact with her after looking over her application.
"Please, tell me a little about yourself," said Todoroki.
"Before I became a hero, I used my Quirk to help my parents out with their construction company because they saw mine as more compatible with the work than their own. However, my father told me that what would really make them happy is if I pursued my own dreams, so like, I became a Pro Hero not only to help people out, but because my parents gave so much to me, and I really wanted to give back to them."
"I see." Todoroki nodded. "What would you say your greatest strengths are?"
Uraraka smiled. "One of my greatest assets is that I have a very positive outlook on life. I've used this to help quite a few people. Like, Deko has often felt insecure at times, and I did my best to cheer her up and help her see the good in herself. In fact, I feel like I'm part of the reason that she became the hero that she is today."
Todoroki nodded again. "Interesting. And what would you say your greatest weaknesses are?"
Uraraka maintained her smile. "Coming from a household that wasn't very well off, I was taught to be conservative with money. Because of that, I avoided treating myself, and I even had times where I skipped meals just to save money. However, over time, I not only learned not to worry too much about getting enough of the essentials, but I learned that sometimes, rewarding myself is a good thing."
Eventually, Todoroki finished his interview with Uraraka. He was not only taken with her positive personality, but he figured that her Quirk could be a great asset to his agency. However, he also noted that some of her responses to his questions seemed a bit hollow and generic. Nevertheless, having gone through job interviews of his own, he had to remind himself that the candidates who gave some questionable responses weren't as ill-suited for the position as they might seem, and conversely, those who gave dead-on responses could ultimately prove to be dead ducks.
That aside, he welcomed his next applicant, a young woman who was even shorter than Uraraka, who had large hands, long dark green hair tied into a bow at the bottom, round eyes with large irises and a wide mouth that dipped a bit in the center. She wore a white short-sleeve blouse with a dark green skirt and black pumps.
"Greetings. I'm Shoto Todoroki, leader and founder of the Shoto Agency."
"I'm Tsuyu Asui, but my friends just call me 'Tsu'. Uraraka told me about this place, so I decided to come along and see what it was about, ribbit."
"Nice to meet you, Asui."
Todoroki and Tsu shook hands.
"Please, have a seat."
Tsu sat before Todoroki's desk, and the interview began:
"Tell me a little about yourself."
Tsu put her index finger up to her mouth. "My life wasn't always easy. My parents often travelled, so I had to raise my siblings, and I didn't have much time for myself in middle school because I had to spend a lot of time on my hero studies. In spite of this, the more I studied about being a hero, the more I wanted to become one, and it helped that I found a really good friend in Ochaco. From there on, I made more friends, and those connections also helped in my hero career."
"Interesting." Todoroki nodded. "What would you say your greatest strengths are?"
"As a result of having to raise two siblings by myself, I developed a sense of maturity. Consequently, I also learned to care not only for myself, but for others as well. At the previous Hero Agency I worked at, my superiors gave me high marks for being someone that others could rely on in times of emotional difficulty. What also helped is my tendency to stay calm under fire. One time, we fought an especially powerful villain, and even though the odds were against us, I didn't crack under the pressure, which I believe helped us win in the end."
Todoroki nodded again. "OK. And what would you say your greatest weaknesses are?"
"I can be bluntly honest when speaking my mind, and often, I can come off as harsh or cold when I don't really mean to do so. However, in more recent times, before I say something, I've been learning to think about whether it's something that my friends would want or even need to hear in a given situation, and I find that it's improved my relations with people greatly, ribbit."
Tsu was the last candidate that Todoroki interviewed for that day. While he noted that she gave good responses to the questions that were asked of her and had no trouble making eye contact, she did stare blankly at him the whole time, and her intonation seemed a bit flat. However, he was impressed by her Quirk and all the abilities that came with it, so he figured that she too could be a great asset to his agency.
At some point after he got into the office the next day, Todoroki got a report on the CHP's background check for Midoriya, and it showed nothing that would disqualify her from service with his agency, so he called her up.
"Hello?" said Deko.
"Midoriya, it's Shoto Todoroki."
"Oh, hey, what's up?"
"Having reviewed your application, and having gotten the results of your background check, I hereby accept you into the Shoto Agency."
"Really!? Oh, thank you so much!"
"You're welcome. I'm still interviewing candidates for my agency, but I promise to get back to you as soon as I have a date for the training academy."
"Got it! Anything else?"
"That's all for now. Have a nice day, Midoriya."
"You too!"
Just seconds after Todoroki hung up, he got another call:
"Shoto Agency, Shoto Todoroki speaking."
"Hey, it's Jane again. There are at least ten women coming up to visit you."
"OK, thank you for informing me."
By now, Todoroki really had to wonder. His first applicant being a woman was plausible enough, and while it was strange that his next two applicants were not only women, but had shown up simultaneously, he still didn't see much odd about that. However, with ten more on the way, and all of them being women, he had to wonder if this was just a simple coincidence or if there was a special something that women saw in his agency. Regardless of what the overall gender balance of his agency turned out to be, he vowed to treat all of his employees with fairness and respect.
Also, while other new agencies would've been overwhelmed with the sheer onslaught of multiple applicants, Todoroki had thought ahead and installed a number ticket dispenser outside of his office door in addition to an electronic counter showing whose turn it was. The counter automatically activated once the first ticket was taken, an electronic female voice saying "Now serving number 1." Shortly thereafter, he heard knocking at his door.
"Come in," said Todoroki.
Todoroki's next applicant was a tall, voluptuous young woman with black hair in a large, spiky ponytail and a long bang running down the right side of her face. She wore a purple short-sleeve blouse, a black skirt and black high-heel shoes. Todoroki did his best to keep himself composed in spite of the fact that he found her to be very beautiful.
"Greetings. I'm Shoto Todoroki, leader and founder of the Shoto Agency."
"Hi!" The woman smiled at him. "I'm Momo Yaoyorozu! One of my friends told me about this place."
"Nice to meet you, Yaoyorozu."
Once again, Todoroki shook hands with Yaoyorozu.
"Please, have a seat."
Yaoyorozu took a seat, and once again, Todoroki got down to the interview process:
"Tell me a little about yourself."
Yaoyorozu smiled. "I come from a famous hero family, so I thought it was only natural that I'd follow in their footsteps. It hasn't always been easy. For example, I lost in an early round of a sports festival that my school held, and that was a huge blow to my confidence, but I chose to do my best anyways, and thanks to what I'd learned not only in my final exams, but at my first job, I regained my confidence, and I hope to inspire others through the example I set as a hero."
Next up was Kyoka Jiro, who had accompanied Yaoyorozu to the agency.
"What would you say your greatest strengths are?" asked Todoroki.
Kyoka had a neutral expression on her face, but made some subtle gestures with the earphone jacks on her ears. "I'm very organized. Whenever I plan anything, I try to spell it out in as plain and simple a way as possible, such as when my boss once asked me to come up with a plan when we were raiding a villain's hideout in Long Beach. I'm also multi-talented, and you might not find this relevant, but I play many different musical instruments, which I find has helped sharpen my mind."
After Jiro, Todoroki interviewed Mina Ashido.
"And what would you say your greatest weaknesses are?" asked Todoroki.
Ashido smiled and rubbed the back of her head. "Well, I never was the best when it came to my academic studies, but like, I've learned not to be afraid to ask others for help if I really need it, and I find I do better if I have like a tutor or something. I also have trouble coping with the fear I feel after going through a difficult situation, but that's why I have super good friends that I can talk to about it!"
Next up was Toru Hagakure, who had accompanied Ashido.
"If you could start a business of your own, any sort of business, what would it be?" asked Todoroki.
"I'd open a candy store because not only do I really love caramel, but I totally love working with people, and I want people to be happy, you know?"
Todoroki's next interviewee for the day was Itsuka Kendo.
"How did you hear about this opening?" asked Todoroki.
Kendo smiled. "I was looking for openings for Hero Agencies on Craigslist, and then I found this one."
Next after Kendo was Yui Kodai.
"Tell me about why you're leaving your current job," said Todoroki.
Kodai sat up as straight as a board and intently focused her gaze on Todoroki. "I like my current agency, but the environment is rather toxic, and nothing I have done has seemed to ameliorate that."
Ibara Shiozaki followed Kodai.
"Tell me about a time when a coworker or client got angry with you and how you responded to it," said Todoroki.
Shiozaki had a serious look on her face. "Once, I refused a coworker's advances. I reminded him that not only were his actions unethical, but sinful as well. He continued with his iniquitous actions, and thus, I reported him to my immediate supervisor, who promptly punished the transgression."
After Shiozaki, then came Setsuna Tokage.
"Tell me about the most difficult decision you had to make in the past six months," said Todoroki.
"One time, my boss offered me a new position in the agency that not only paid better, but also had an easier schedule. However, this was an overseas job, and as much as I liked the opportunity, I couldn't leave my family and friends behind, so I passed it up.
Following Tokage, there was Mei Hatsume.
"What makes you a good fit for this job?"
Hatsume smiled and gestured to herself. "I've not only had years of experience in designing and repairing support items for heroes, but I'm continually learning about what I can do to improve on my work!"
Todoroki's final interviewee for the day was Camie Utsushimi.
Utsushimi had her finger on her cheek. "So like, what do we do in the training academy?
"Not only will you be taught to hone your existing Quirk and abilities, but you'll also be given training in additional skills that you'll need while working here."
Utsushimi smiled. "Oh, totes awesome!"
After finishing this round of interviews, Todoroki decided to call it for the day. While some of his candidates had shone more than others, he felt that they were all suited for his agency. Now, the only thing that remained was to set a date, time and place for the training academy to begin…
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
