Author's Notes: I know this is really late and I'm sorry ;w; I have a valid excuse though. Well, you probably only care about the story so I'll rant at the end of the chapter instead hehe
Youkai live in the outside world AU
The scene was a barren and red hellscape, the twisted and distorted visage of a western underworld. Fiery, bright, and yet also cold and dim. There were piles of rubble, discarded luggage, broken electronics, the telltale sparking of a felled power line, and many ruined buildings, once great structures that stood tall, now but stumps of a bygone time.
In the center of it all was a girl, one with majestic black wings, looking barely ten years of age, in awe at the sights, yet at the same time frozen with fear. One look at the girl's trembling frame and glistening blood red eyes and it was obvious she was shaken. That the sight before her was a horrific one. When she shook tears fell from her eyes and gathered into a pool on the dark soot-stained ground. But the puddle suddenly stopped growing, and the girl had stopped crying. She tried to speak out. A whimper. The girl closed her eyes again, and clenched her fist, determined. So she faced forward, her short cerulean hair obstructing half her face, yet it was so clearly a pained one.
Taking a single step forward, the girl moved, and moved, and moved. She walked forward aimlessly looking for something, or nothing in particular. She passed by torn down buildings, free standing walls, abandoned homes, chipped statues, and collapsed mailboxes. It was among the mailboxes that she found something that had caught her eye. "Scarlet".
The girl's eyes went wide. With fear? With realization? With anticipation? Who knew? What was clear was the panic. The panic in her stride, in her sprint, in her desperate digging among the rubble to find something. Anything. Please. Please.
Gold.
The color of treasure, the color of divinity, and the color of the sun that was absent from the crimson sky. But most importantly, it was also the color of her sister's hair.
Her beloved little sister whom she held dear to her heart. Despite all the trouble she brought with her, she still loved her immensely. She was always so cheery, energetic, and loved to make a mess out of things, all while looking as bright and golden as the sun. No matter what she did or how much she broke, her elder sister would always forgive her after seeing her sheepish smile and hearing her adorable voice say 'Sorry'. Right now, that sister's hair was in front of her in the wreckage. With no sister in sight.
And Remilia wept for it.
Remilia awoke and blinked, feeling the fresh hot tears that were streaming down her face, and mentally noting everything she had just experienced. Remilia was blessed with the ability to see into the future, unfortunately this resulted in some less than savory dreams. At this point she was already used to them, doesn't make them any less annoying to go through though. Damn oracles, can't I go one week without dreaming about some sort of post-apocalyptic hellhole!? Fate really is a cruel mistress.
"Ah, you awake? You had another nightmare, didn't you?"
"Hnn?" Remilia turned towards the voice and saw someone standing at the door to her bedroom. It was current roommate, one Satori Komeiji. Satori was a kind girl, she was about the same height as Remilia, that is to say very short. She had light purple hair and a pr etty cute face, at least Remilia thought so.
"Umm…" Satori vocalized, blushing. "I'm right here you know?"
She can also read minds. Yes I'm aware, I am currently focusing all of my attention on you after all. Remilia thought, which was a lie; she was still pretty shaken about that dream she had. Who knew that being able to see into thousands of possible futures could cause a young vampire some distress?
"Putting aside the fact that you lied, it's a bit rude to not respond to me you know? Just because I can read your mind doesn't mean you don't have to talk to me." Satori interjected. She really was cute when she was pouting huh.
"Flattery will get you nowhere."
"Fineeee" Remilia relented. "I had another dream that was maybe about a depressing future. Nothing to concern yourself with though."
"I'm sure." Satori wordlessly sat down next to her on the bed, and took out a warm towel that she has prepared, as well as some cold pudding from the fridge. She was prepared for this.
"Ah, thanks." Remilia didn't bother asking. She was used to this already. She simply took the towel and wiped away some of the cold sweat on her face, and proceeded to eat the pudding she was given. "So did I wake you up?" She hazarded.
"Yeah, it's a bit hard to sleep when you keep dreaming loudly like that, so I woke up." Satori answered calmly, while taking the towel to wipe off Remilia's brow and back. "It's fine though, I needed to warm up this towel for when you woke up, and it's better than being jolted awake by you springing off the bed."
Remilia had always had prophetic dreams. And they were always loud. But Satori didn't mind, the vampire couldn't control her power after all. And besides, how many disastrous futures did Remilia avert by taking steps to avoid the ones that fate had shown her? If anything she was supportive of Remilia's powers, lack of sleep be damned. And it wasn't as if she could control her own powers either. Remilia was pretty disgruntled the first time Satori had told her that she saw her dream, to the point of getting into an argument with her, but now they're past that. Yes, at this point Satori would consider herself Remi's partner in crime, her other half, her soulmate? That was an embarrassing thought. Not an unwelcome one though.
She had always been taken by the cold girl. She had always come off as standoffish, snobbish, and an elitist. The classic vampire arrogance. But one's true thoughts and feelings could never hide from Satori's observant gaze, and Remi's was no exception. Over time the girl had slowly come to understand the enigma that was Remilia Scarlet, teller of fortune and deliverer of prophecies. For she was just as misunderstood, as someone who was able to see into others' minds. And so they drifted, ever so slowly, closer. And now she shared a room with the once dark and brooding blue haired beauty.
"You know you're staring at me right?" Remilia half-heartedly complained, all the while eating her pudding.
"Eh? Sorry was I?"
"You know I don't have to be a mind reader to know what your thinking right?" Remilia joked, smirking.
"And what would that be?" Satori fell into her trap.
"You're probably thinking that I'm really pretty and that you're lucky to have me." Remilia guessed. Correctly. I know you, you know.
"A bit narcissistic aren't you?" Satori tried to downplay, but her glowing, farmer's market tomato red blush betrayed her true feelings.
"A bit, but I know you love me for it and think that my smugness is really cute" Remilia was a sharpshooter that rivaled Cupid it seemed. Bat wings were hotter than bird wings anyway right?
"I do but you're trying to distract me from your dream aren't you?" Shit.
"Ahaha caught me…" Remilia sheepishly laughed. It seemed she could never win against Satori, no matter how many killer one liners she threw at her.
"If you don't wanna talk about it then that's fine." Satori pulled the covers over herself. "I just want to sleep again, preferably without you crying in your sleep this time?"
"You didn't have to say that you know?" Remilia pouted. "Fine I'll get back in bed after I put away everything you gave me."
Remilia proceeded to throw away the empty pudding cup and was about to wash the spoon when Satori spoke.
"You know, I'll help you change whatever future you saw right? I'm your partner in crime and partner in life after all." Despite the cool line, Satori was so clearly embarrassed. It was really sweet.
"Thanks Satori, I appreciate it." Remilia couldn't express in enough words her appreciation for her girlfriend, but trusted that Satori could read her mind and find out for herself the depth of her love for her. Sometimes having a mind reader girlfriend was nice, even if she was a bit of a bully.
"Hey! I am not!"
And Remilia simply laughed.
Author's Notes: Ok so I originally planned on uploading all seven of the chapters on the seventh, but school started on the eighth so I had to sleep earlier than expected. Then, once I was finished, I wanted to upload this on Ao3, but then I found out I was number 51000 on the waiting list so yeah. Then I tried signing up to fanfiction and it said to wait up to 24 hours to receive mail. It took me 2 days and 2 attempts to send mail before I realized that the email address autofill on my iPad was the wrong email, having an extra '.ph' extension that wasn't in my actual email. THEN, I find out I need to wait 12 hours before I post!? Finally, after struggling with Fanfiction's UI for a while (seriously, it's waaaay too hard), I posted the first chapter thinking I could edit it, but I had to in fact, edit the document itself to do that. Ugh. Then my chrome crashed while I was writing this. The end.
Now, on to my thoughts on the story. When I saw the 'dreams' prompt, the first one to come to mind was Doremy, of course she was, but I desperately wanted my OTP, SatoRemi, to make it into the story. So then I thought What if Satori saw into Remi's dream? and I thought Satori comforting Remi after a nightmare would be super cute. Then this story was born. I'm really bad at angst and drama so the dream scene was pretty weak, but I was going for a more light tone so eh. Hope you liked it!
