Why did you follow me to ShadowClan?

Hawkpaw's ice-blue eyes were narrowed as he slunk amongst the tall grass and his snow-white underbelly just a whisker-length above the murky silt of the muddy marsh he was trudging his huge paws through. Sight set on a muskrat nibbling within the reed area. Unaware of being Hawkpaw's prey.

You loved it in ThunderClan.

Hawkpaw made sure to keep his movements slow and steady, his scent masked amongst the grass, and trying to keep the water as undisturbed as possible.

You love mom and our siblings more than you ever will anyone in ShadowClan.

Hawkpaw was practically on top of the muskrat when he pounced. Sinking his long claws deeply into the furry brown rodent's chest. Making it's death a quick and painless one as he bit into the back of it's skull.

You don't even like the taste of frogs or lizards!

Hawkpaw proudly held up his catch to show off to his mentor. Blackfoot came stalking out of the grass from where he had been observing Hawkpaw's hunting skills. The jet-black pawed ShadowClan deputy looked pleased.

If you're just trying to protect me then you shouldn't have joined. I don't need you to protect me.

Leaving ThunderClan had nothing to do with Tawnypaw. His father or anyone else. It was all about Hawkpaw and his reasons for leaving ThunderClan and joining ShadowClan.

Truthfully, Hawkpaw left because he felt coddled. In ThunderClan he had nothing to prove. Being born, raised and taught the warrior code was something every other ordinary warrior went through. Generation after generation. Everything was guaranteed. You were trusted. You were respected. You had a Clan that accepted you unconditionally. ThunderClan gave him everything. Hawkpaw proved nothing of worth in return.

His mother, Firestar, had nothing when joining ThunderClan. A kittypet accepting an invitation to join a Clan that was hostile towards her in the beginning. Gaining their trust, their acceptance, admiration and clawing her way up the ranks to leadership on her own merit and skills.

She had saved the Clans and even the whole forest more than once.

Hawkpaw, ever since becoming an apprentice, wanted to be just like his mother. The dark brown tabby strives to be the best, to work the hardest, to gain the same recognition as his mother. However in ThunderClan he was overlooked for that sole reason.

When his former Clanmates looked at him, all they saw was his mother's son. His abilities, his accomplishments, his rigorous training meant nothing to the superiority of his mother's success and popularity.

Hawkpaw saw that the same validation he wanted wouldn't be found in ThunderClan. If Hawkpaw truly wanted to have that inner complete achievement, like his mother, he needed a fresh start on the same starting point.

Hawkpaw needed to leave and seek out somewhere he could truly branch out and flourish into his own brand of warrior.

I don't think being part of ShadowClan is the right place for you.

"You're turning out to be just like your father." Blackfoot picked up a toad that was caught just a few moments prior, and continued on in the lead.

Hawkpaw nodded. Picking up his own muskrat and began padding after his mentor.

Though Blackfoot's words were meant as a compliment, a show of support to his apprentice. Hawkpaw felt as though he was once again being pushed into the shadows of someone he would never be.

I think you belong somewhere else.

This wasn't all that exciting but it's something I wanted to address. Hawkpaw left to prove himself just like his mother proved herself. Unlike his mother he isn't doing it for a Clan, he's doing it for himself. He's proving to himself that he can become a part of a Clan on his own merit and worth.

Fun Facts:

Tawnypelt and Hawkfrost still have arguments to this day about Hawkfrost joining ShadowClan.
