I might edit something later, since I keep changing my mind about plot elements. Doing my best, people.
When Clary woke up, her eyelids didn't flutter. She didn't croak out "Where am I?" in a quiet voice. She kept her eyelids shut and listened.
"She'll wake up soon, Jace. Why do you care so much, anyway? She's just some mundie who got caught up with a demon."
"She's not a mundane, Izzy. She has runes. I saw one."
"Really? She's unmarked, Jace. We're not turning her into a Forsaken just to prove you wrong. Though the Angel knows your ego needs the hit."
"I saw it, I'm sure!" The boy - Jace - lowers his voice. "She has the Agony rune. I don't know why it's there, but I saw it. It's a bit faded, like it hasn't been activated in a while, but it's there." Shit, he saw that? Her father had given her that rune, so when he was too busy to punish her, he'd tie her up and leave her with it activated for hours. It couldn't do physical damage, but it could make her want to crawl into a hole and die.
"Jace, why would she have an Agony rune, of all of them? That doesn't make any sense."
"I don't know, Izzy, I don't know. Maybe she'll tell us." Not happening, Clary thought. She didn't particularly feel like being prosecuted simply for the accident of her birth. And she knew the Clave would throw her in the Gard forever, simply for being too different to control.
The girl sighed. "Alright. I have patrol now. But you should sleep, Jace. You didn't at all last night."
"Later. I just wanna talk to her." The girl stalked off, her footsteps loud and dramatic.
Clary was….confused? She didn't really know how to feel. The people here didn't see a demonic murderer. They didn't even see a Morgenstern. They saw a normal human being. Though once they knew who she was, that would be gone.
If she stayed, she could get a taste of a normal life. Thanks to her demon blood and angel blood, she'd never been able to fit in with anyone for long. She was too different to be a mundie, too much of a demon to be a Shadowhunter, and too much of a Shadowhunter to be a Downworlder. But she could do it - be normal - for a little while. People want what they can't have, she'd learned a long time ago. Indeed, the one thing she couldn't have - a normal life - was the only thing she desired.
