Suddenly, there was a loud banging on Perry's door. "Joy!" the young woman heard her boyfriend on the other side of the door. He continued banging on it. The man threw Joy to the ground and ran to the door that led to the hall. He opened the rear door and ran out of the office. Joy got up and ran to the other door. She shakily unlocked it and opened it. She threw herself into Ken's arms, "are you okay?" He asked as she cried.
"I don't know," she choked out.
"Let me see," he held onto her arms as he pulled back and crouched down to see if she was hurt. "You're probably gonna have a shiner tomorrow. Your lip doesn't look like it split too badly." He took in her disheveled appearance. The right sleeve was partially torn off of her dress. The seam on the side was split and her zipper was halfway open. She had several bruises forming on her face and arms. Ken held Joy's hand and the two went over to lock the door that the man escaped out of. Then, Ken went to lock the front door and call the police. He also had to call Perry and Della, but he wanted the police and paramedics there as soon as possible. Perry and Della didn't answer, so he called Margaret and she offered to try and find them. Ken then went to the couch in the waiting area and sat by Joy. He put his arm around her and pulled her closer to him.
"Thank you," she said softly.
"You don't have to thank me," he said as he kissed her temple.
"Well, you got here just in time to stop him from...from doing anything worse."
The police arrived ten minutes later. "Can you tell me what happened?" the lieutenant asked Joy.
That was when Margaret walked in, "I'm sorry," she said, "I've called everywhere I thought they could be. I thought I'd come here and look at Della's appointment book to see if that would help."
"Thanks," Ken said.
"Are you okay?" she asked Joy.
"I will be."
Margaret gave the young woman a sympathetic look and went to look at the appointment book. There was nothing so she sat and waited like the others. "I was organizing some of the files in Ken's office when I heard the front door open. I thought it was Ken returning from his meeting. When I walked out of the office, I saw it was Mr. Donaldson. My dad and Ken have a connecting door to their offices that only locks from my father's side. I knew my dad's door to the reception area was locked so I ran back into Ken's and shut the door. When I ran into my father's office, I tried to shut and lock the connecting door, but he was too strong for me to hold off. He locked the connecting door and told me that he was going to make sure I was never able to testify about what happened. Then he started beating me and throwing me around the room. I tried to get away, but I couldn't. The next thing I knew. I heard Ken's voice and he was banging on the door. Then, Mr. Donaldson was gone."
"We need to take some pictures," the lieutenant said. Joy nodded her head and stood so that the pictures could be taken. It broke Ken's heart to see how broken and vulnerable she was.
"Joy! Ken!" they heard Della yell from the hallway. She and Perry rushed in and saw their beaten daughter with the police. Perry held Della back while the police finished photographing the injuries. The officer stepped away and Della ran to hug her daughter. "What happened? Are you alright?"
Joy winced and Ken gently pulled Della back, "easy," he said gently.
The lieutenant walked up to Perry. "Mr. Mason, your office is unfortunately a crime scene. We have to take a look around."
"Of course," Perry said.
"Do you have surveillance cameras?"
"Yes," he said, "Margaret can show you how to access them." The former nun had started helping with some investigative work and even took classes so she could be better equipt to help. She was the one who had the most time to pay attention to the installation of the cameras so she knew the most. The lieutenant sent one of his detectives with Margaret. The paramedics arrived and started patching up Joy. Della was beyond distraught and Perry was furious. How could that man have escaped? Joy didn't have any injuries that required hospitalization or stitches. The paramedics cleaned her up and patched her up before leaving. Ken took off his coat and placed it on his girlfriend so that she wasn't so exposed. Della tried to be near her daughter, but she only wanted Ken's arms around her. When the detectives were done, they left with the information and evidence they had. "Miss Mason," the lieutenant walked back into the reception area. "I'm going to have a couple of my men keep an eye on you. When you leave your apartment, they'll follow you to wherever you go."
"Okay," Joy said.
"Is there any chance you may know where Mr. Donaldson went?"
"No," Joy said, "he never really went anywhere. He brought everyone to him."
The lieutenant finished and left. Perry walked up to Ken and placed a hand on his shoulder, "thank you," he said.
"Like I told Joy, you don't have to thank me. I just wish I hadn't gone to that meeting. I also wish I had left on time."
"It's not your fault," Joy said.
"She's right," Perry said. "He would have found her eventually. At least you were able to stop him."
Ken leaned in and kissed Joy's temple, "I've never been so scared in my life," he said.
"What about when you were on trial for murder?" Joy asked.
"Not even close. It was my life in danger. Not the love of my life."
Joy smiled and leaned into his embrace. "Why don't you kids head home?" Perry suggested. "The office will be closed until it can be cleaned up."
The phone rang and Margaret answered it. When she hung up, she looked at Ken and Joy. "That was the lieutenant. Your detail is out front." She handed them a piece of paper she'd written some information on. "This is the information about them so that you know it's really them."
"Thanks," Ken said. He took the paper and led his girlfriend out of the office.
