Beginning A/N: Hey, everyone. Well, here we are with a little experiment that I wanted to upload in response to an old Pixar classic… Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins! This was the official pilot episode of the series which was made into a movie on VHS back when I was a kid, and I remember that I used to watch it all the time as a little one. Upon remembering this movie, I was all, "Hey, I like Buzz Lightyear and I like My Hero Academia." and I figured why not try to combine the two. Of course, there will be some elements of the new movie, Lightyear, in this story, but it's basically a oneshot for now, just to see how well received this story is. And if enough people like it enough and want me to continue it, I'll consider turning it into a full story. But for now, I hope you all enjoy this oneshot of mine.
Disclaimer: I don't own My Hero Academia or Buzz Lightyear of Star Command!
Beginning of a Space Hero
Our story begins with a backdrop of outer space as three identification screens appear. Each one details a member of the elite universe protection unit of the Space Ranger Corps. Two of them are young men who appear to be in their early to mid twenties. One is clearly human with pale skin, blue eyes, and despite wearing a purple cowl on his head, you can tell that he has light brown hair thanks to his exposed eyebrows. The other man looks human, but he has blue skin, his eyes have yellow sclera, and he's not wearing a cowl. The third individual is a fourteen year old boy with light skin, four freckles that form diamond patterns on each cheek below his eyes, and green hair that has a curly yet spiky look to it. His face and eyes are both round which gives him a sort of innocent look.
These three are our main protagonists.
["This is the universe. I work here. The name's Lightyear; Buzz Lightyear. I'm a Space Ranger. My partner, Warp Darkmatter, and my young apprentice, Izuku Midoriya, are among the elite universe protection unit. At 08:00, a concerning report came in."]
Next to flash on the screen was a warning about three little aliens with green skin, three eyes, pointed ears, and a single antenna on their heads, wearing the same blue uniform, appeared on the screen as the word 'MISSING' flashed over the image.
Missing: three Little Green Men. Last seen Star Command science bay. Alpha mission objective, locate LGMs A.S.A.P.!
[We'll fly and rescue the Little Green Men, even if it means going to infinity… and beyond.]
We now find ourselves on an uninhabited moon with a single space shuttle perched on a cliff. The planet is completely toxic towards everything that could possibly call it home, save for, perhaps, a few creatures that can survive in such a toxic environment. The terrain seems a bit unstable. Geysers spew poisonous gas which proves that the air isn't breathable. And, aside from the trio of Space Rangers, there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere.
"Buzz Lightyear Mission Log: We've searched this gaseous planetoid from top to bottom with no sign of the missing personnel-" Buzz said, monologuing.
Until he was startled out of it by the loud honk of a car horn as a pair of lights flashed next to him.
"Hey!"
"Come on, buddy, nobody ever reads those reports." Warp said.
Both he and Buzz were wearing the standard Space Ranger suits which were white with green armor plating, some buttons on the chest area, built-in laser blaster and communicator in the arms, and a flight pack attached to their backs. They had their helmets up so that they could safely breathe in the toxic environment. After getting over his shock from Warp's earlier joke, Buzz just strode over to his best friend and partner.
"Warp, my friend, procedure is what separates us from the dark forces of chaos." Buzz said as he activated his ocular scanners.
"Che, Buzz, if it means less paperwork, I choose chaos." Warp scoffed before asking, "Hey, where's Greenie, by the way?"
"I'm right here, sir!"
Both men turned to see Izuku jogging over to them. Unlike Warp and Buzz who wore similar space suits, Izuku's is slightly different. It still protects him from the cold vacuum of space, but it's also a different color scheme. Rather than being white, green, and purple like Buzz and Warp's suits, Izuku is wearing one that's beige, red, and dark blue. It also appeared to be a bit more low tech as Izuku seemed to need to wear an external flight pack instead of having one built in. Even his weapons were external with the wrist-mounted laser blaster needing to be strapped on and having twin Plasma Pistols holstered to his utility belt.
"Sorry I'm late. This terrain is rather difficult to navigate in this old suit." Izuku said, finally making it to the trio's moon rover.
"Old?" Buzz asked.
"Functional, but old. I mean, come on, this thing's not going to protect me as well as Terrillion Carbonic alloy would. And not to mention real combat. 'Ahh, robots are shooting at me! Wait… let me strap on my laser!'." Izuku elaborated.
"Ha, he's got you there, Buzz!" chuckled Warp.
Buzz just retracted his scanners and gave his young apprentice a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
"You raise several valid points, Izuku, but don't you worry. You'll get yourself an up-to-date space suit, son. You just need to complete your apprenticeship is all." Buzz said.
"I know I've said this several times before, but I am honored to be your apprentice, Captain Lightyear, sir." Izuku said with a salute.
Buzz just laughed at his apprentice's antics.
"And I couldn't have chosen a better apprentice. I'm certain that once your apprenticeship is complete, you'll be a shoo-in for UA's hero course." Buzz said.
But Warp didn't seem to share his sentiments too much.
"Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath with how quirkist Greenie's home country is." Warp said.
Neither Buzz nor Izuku replied to that statement, but they couldn't deny that he had a point. Japanese society on Earth seemed to believe that one couldn't become a hero without having a quirk, and that having no quirk made you less than human. Even somebody with a purely cosmetic quirk, like the power to change their eye color at will, was worth more in society than somebody who had no quirk at all. It's sad, really. As Warp buckled into the driver's seat of the rover, he scoffed once again as he saw Buzz and Izuku gazing out over the rocky terrain.
"Give it up, partner. This rock's as dead as it looks."
"One should never judge a moon by its craters. We'd better double-check the dark side." Buzz said.
"I'll drive." Warp volunteered with a smile.
NOW, he was really interested in this mission.
And so, they drove off to the dark side of the uncharted moon in search of the missing Little Green Men. Warp drove fast and recklessly, but none of the passengers were worried. Not even as they drove off a cliff. At least not until three new voices screamed and made themselves known. Landing hard, they skidded to a stop as Warp, Buzz, and Izuku saw exactly who, or rather what, was riding with them.
"Well, mission accomplished. Three LGMs disappeared, we just found three LGMs." Warp said, activating a hologram of the LGMs in question.
But his two companions weren't so convinced.
"...Call me crazy, but I don't think that these are the three missing Little Green Men." Izuku said.
"Sure, not anymore." said Warp.
"No, Izuku's right, Warp. I'm afraid that these three are stowaways. Blast! This won't look good in my report… HEY!" Buzz began to say before he noticed their stowaways wandering off.
"Must save the lost ones." said the LGMs.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! We'll find your amigos, boys, just not here." Warp said as he ran in front of the Little Green Men.
"Here." said one of the LGMs.
They tried to move on, but stopped when Buzz asked, "How can you be so sure?"
"Mind link." they replied together.
"Oh, come on!" groaned Warp.
Suddenly, the LGMs' antennae began to wiggle as they turned around, their expressions blank as they uttered a single word in unison.
"Evil…"
Warp rolled his eyes as Buzz and Izuku looked at each other, not liking what they had just heard.
"Now, you're just trying to freak us out." Warp said dismissively.
"No, it's my worst fear come true!" exclaimed Buzz.
"Oh, jeepers, here we go again." groaned Izuku.
"For the hundredth time this week alone, and it's not even two o'clock yet." quipped Warp.
"This diabolical plot can only be the work of the sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance… Evil Emperor Zurg!"
But Warp and Izuku were not impressed by Buzz's little speech. In fact, Warp was just annoyed, and Buzz could see that Izuku actually looked angry. Like, Commander Nebula levels of angry, if the scowl and the twitchy eye, along with the anime tick mark throbbing on his temple are anything to go by.
"WHAT! FUCKING! PLOT?!" yelled Izuku, who had had enough of Buzz's Zurg obsession.
"Ohhh, the green cinnamon roll finally cursed. Not good." Warp muttered with a wince.
"Buzz, I don't mean to sound rude, but you think Zurg is behind every kitten stuck up a tree!" exclaimed Izuku.
"The fiend! Why can't he leave kitty cats out of his nefarious schemes?" Buzz asked, only proving the boy's point.
Izuku stomped off as he went on a little mini rant in his angered state, but still not going too far from the group.
"All I know is we've searched half the Zeta quadrant for the missing LGMs, and what the hell do we find? A LOT OF FUCKING NOTHING!" he ranted.
But as a cloud of poisonous gas erupted from behind Izuku, Buzz and Warp flinched and looked on in shock and slight fear as something was rising up from out of the mist. And that shock was enough to snap Izuku out of his rage as fear set in.
"...There is something really bad behind me, isn't there?" he asked.
A loud combination of a roar and a hiss caught his attention as a giant alien snake creature with no eyes, dark blue upper half, purple underbelly, and bladed arms lunged at the young Space Ranger apprentice. And as he turned and saw it, Izuku knew he wouldn't be able to move in time.
"CRATER VIPER! LOOK OUT!" Buzz cried.
He tackled Izuku out of the way just in the nick of time as they tumbled down a cliff face. Warp jumped down after them and they all readied their weapons, Buzz and Warp arming their standard laser blasters while Izuku drew his twin Plasma Pistols, as more Crater Vipers rose up from the crags surrounding them.
"Crater Vipers never hunt in packs." said Buzz.
"Tell them that!" quipped Warp.
The beasts roared and screeched as they attacked, prompting Buzz, Warp, and Izuku to start firing in an attempt to ward them off. Buzz ended up shooting one in the mouth which repelled it for a moment, but it quickly recovered and attacked again. Warp was so focused on two other Crater Vipers attacking him from both directions that he didn't notice another one about to strike him from the side until it was too late. Lucky for him, Buzz intercepted and shot the beast which quickly retreated.
"Thanks, partner."
Buzz just gave Warp a smile and returned to shooting. Even Izuku was firing rapidly with his Plasma Pistols and hitting every shot, but these Crater Vipers were hecka durable.
"Looks like this moon's not so dead after all." said Izuku as he ducked under a bladed arm.
"Gimme a minute! It will be!" exclaimed Warp.
But the three Space Rangers were so focused on repelling the beasts that they didn't notice that the LGM stowaways were walking off on their own through the veritable minefield of Crater Vipers. Not until they spoke up, at least. That's when Buzz took notice.
"The lost ones!"
"What are you doing?" gasped Buzz.
He quickly ducked under an incoming strike.
"This way." said an LGM.
The trio went down through a rocky path as a Crater Viper narrowly missed them. Hard to believe that these little green guys were able to avoid danger just by walking in a straight line, eh? One viper tried to coil around Warp who shot in the chin, and as the LGMs continued on their way, the other vipers seemed to be fighting each other over the little green prey, leading to the aliens not getting hurt. But still, Buzz wasn't about to take any chances. He ran after them only to be grabbed from behind by another Crater Viper. Another beast appeared in the LGMs' path and Buzz quickly, with some difficulty, activated his jetpack.
The wings popping out from the sides caused the viper that had him to lose its grip as he flew to the Little Green Men. Skidding across the ground on his back, Buzz intercepted the hungry beast and shot it multiple times in the underside, eliciting cries of pain from the beast. Thus, showing him a potential weakness in their foe. He quickly shouted some new directions to his partner and apprentice who were still fighting the other beasts.
"Warp! Izuku! Hit them from below!"
"Soft underbellies, huh?" Warp asked.
He also took flight while Izuku pressed a couple of buttons on his pistols and combined them into a much more powerful Plasma Rifle. It bore a stunning resemblance to an Earth double-barrel shotgun, but its range was much greater.
"Then let's see just how ticklish these things are." he said.
Taking aim, he shot three plasma blasts that each hit their mark and caused the three beasts to retreat into their craters. But this also caused the rest to retreat and reveal the REAL threat.
"I should have guessed! A Crater Viper Slag Monster mutant!" exclaimed Buzz.
The three Space Rangers looked on in shock at the sight of the giant beast. It was a monster that looked like a giant rock formation with a single eye, a huge mouth full of primitive teeth, and four hands that each had five Crater Vipers for fingers. All in all, it was something straight out of a nightmare.
"The LGMs!" exclaimed Izuku.
Once again, the Little Green Men were walking towards the danger. Izuku groaned and quickly pressed a button on his wrist communicator which caused the back of his seat from the rover to shoot something out of it which hooked itself to the back of his suit… before a pair of wings unfolded from the sides and rocket boosters activated to reveal an older model flight pack! The three quickly flew after the LGMs as the mutant monster noticed them and sent its Crater Viper tendrils after them.
"Must save the lost ones!"
The LGMs were quickly picked up the little stowaways and started flying up to a cliff that would be out of range of the beast's tendrils.
"Can't you just!-" Warp started to say but was interrupted by Buzz.
"Warp, Izuku, split-up now!"
As the mutant monster sent more tendrils at them, the three Space Rangers split formation to avoid them. Izuku had flown a little too close to the beast's face and kicked off of its lone eye to get higher up faster, drawing a roar of pain from it.
"I hope that hurt, cyclops!" exclaimed Izuku.
And as they landed on the cliff, it was apparent that Warp was more than a little annoyed by the antics of the LGMs thus far.
"Any reason you were looking to shake hands with a beast from twenty-thousand craters?" demanded Warp.
"The lost ones are there." the LGMs said, pointing to the beast below.
Naturally, Buzz, Warp, and Izuku assumed the worst from that phrasing.
"Oh, well I'd say they're the dead ones now." said Warp. "Let's get out of here."
Buzz closed his eyes, mourning for the dead… until he realized what the LGMs were really saying and came up with a plan.
"No. I'm going in. Boys, follow my lead."
Buzz activated his flight pack and flew down towards the monster, prompting Izuku and Warp to do the same as they followed after Buzz.
"I hope you have a plan!" exclaimed Izuku.
"You and me both, Greenie!" Warp said.
"No more so than usual." Buzz replied.
He pressed a button on his suit and shot grappling cables out from his wings. Using these cables, he began to fly around while tying up the monster mutant's tendrils. Warp and Izuku did the same as they followed Buzz's lead.
"Now what?" Warp asked after they had all of the tendrils tied.
"Full throttle, hit it!" Buzz ordered, pressing a button on his suit.
The three rangers flew at full speed upwards, higher and higher until they found themselves struggling to go any higher at all. They were giving it all they had as they tried to follow Buzz's plan, which Warp and Izuku now realized was to lift the monster up out of its resting place. But it was by no means easy. The beast easily weighed more than just a few tons, and even though the beast was successfully being lifted, as proven by the rocks crumbling away at its base, it became apparent that they weren't going to fully lift it up as the cables were straining far too much.
"The lost ones aren't in it, they're under it!" exclaimed Buzz as he began to feel the strain. "Not… enough… power…!"
He set his sights on the cliff jutting out above them and aimed his wrist laser at it while Warp did the same. Izuku quickly strapped on his own laser and also took aim.
"Alright… new plan!"
The three rangers shot their lasers at the cliff and began to, for lack of a better term, saw their way through the rock. They quickly detached their cables and flew through the debris as the giant stone fell right on top of the monster mutant. Though, whether it killed it or not remains to be seen. With the crisis averted, the three regrouped at a higher altitude, with Warp being a little less than pleased at what they just went through.
"That was your plan?" he asked Buzz.
"Most of it." Buzz replied before asking, "Where are the LGMs?"
Izuku sighed and said, "Take a guess."
They slowly lowered themselves until they landed right behind the three Little Green Men and saw something that they never thought they'd see on a desolate moon such as this one.
"Zurg." droned the LGMs.
"I knew it." said Buzz.
Right there, beneath the monster they just defeated, was an outpost that had the symbol of the Evil Emperor Zurg on the roof. And it was here that the missing LGMs were being held captive.
Meanwhile, inside the base, several of Zurg's henchmen, who were literal brains with eyeballs in jars attached to robotic bodies wheeled around as they continued a form of torture on the missing LGMs. The three Little Green Men in question were floating in a vat of green liquid as they were occasionally shocked by the brainpods trying to get information out of them. The main door to the room opened up, scaring the brainpods, but to their relief, it was just one of their own comrades. Another brainpod by the designation of the number thirteen.
"Anything?" pleaded Brainpod-13.
"No." Brainpod-29 replied regretfully.
"Oh, he's not gonna like this…!" groaned Brainpod-13.
He gasped in fear as the doors opened again, only for another henchman, this one bearing resemblance to a humanoid pillbug wearing a red and purple jumpsuit walked in. He seemed just as nervous as the brainpods did.
"Anything?" he asked.
"No…" the brainpods replied.
"Oh, he's not going to like this." said the pillbug.
He walked out of the room, the doors closing behind him drawing a sigh of relief from Brainpod-29. But the brainpod yelped as the doors opened again, but fortunately it was just that same henchman.
"What should I tell him?" the pillbug asked.
"We have proven that the Little Green Men think and feel as one. We, heh-heh, just don't know how." replied Brainpod-29.
"D'oh, he's not gonna like this at all!" exclaimed the nervous pillbug.
He left once again, drawing relief and a little bit of annoyance from the brainpods.
"Oh, now what?" demanded Brainpod-29 as the doors opened not two seconds later.
It was indeed the same henchman… but he was not alone.
As proven by the clawed, metal hand that had him in a death grip as he struggled to breathe.
"Yup… he… didn't… like it." wheezed the pillbug.
The poor little bug was abruptly dropped to the ground as his boss, Zurg, strode in.
Zurg takes the form of a tall, thin-built but broad-chested humanoid of unknown species clad in armor and robes of royal purple. His head is always sealed in a great helmet crowned with horns, through which a pair of angular red eyes and a grille of yellow teeth (or at least a frowning bevor or mouthpiece) stare forth. His chest is clad in a grey and purple chassis, possibly of steel, his arms in gauntlets of steel tipped with cruel claws. His feet are shrouded by long, imperial robes of purple, and overall he dons a dramatic black cape lined with red, with upturned lapels in vampiric fashion. The clasp on of his cape is emblazoned with "Z," and it apparently functions as a sort of control panel for his various systems, for with it, he can activate his rocket boots, permitting him the ability of flight. Although not obvious at first glance, due to his obscuring robes, he does indeed have feet, demonstrated by his rocket boots which he apparently "got on sale".
Naturally, the Brainpods started panicking and rambled about their progress to Zurg who simply shoved them out of the way. Extending his claws, Zurg broke the container holding the LGMs, spilling the green water all over the floor. Yanking all three LGMs out of the tank by the wires attached to their torture helmets, Zurg held them up and charged one of his claws with electrical energy before he lightly touched them, making the little aliens cry out in pain from the high voltage. Zurg simply cackled at their pain.
"We are one." the LGMs said.
Right before they were shocked again. Yet still, they remained defiant.
"We will never talk!" exclaimed one of the LGMs.
"Do your worst!" declared another.
To which Zurg upped the voltage of his electrical charge.
"My plan exactly."
He zapped them again, making them scream in pain.
Back outside, Buzz was trying to blast the door down with a concentrated beam from his Star Command laser but had no luck and was forced to stop.
"Blast! Laser resistant diabonic alloy!" exclaimed Buzz as he glared at the door.
"Let me try."
Everyone watched as Warp calmly walked up to the door, knocked a few times, and hid on the other side. The door opened as a smiling little Grub answered.
"Yes?"
Warp abruptly slammed the door in the little guy's face, sending him flying back with a crash and knocking him out cold. Opening the door, Warp saw that the path was clear.
"I can't believe that worked." Izuku said, holstering his pistols.
"Yeah, Zurg's henchmen aren't too bright." Warp said, holding the door open for Buzz. "Now, please, after you. I insist."
Buzz strode right in, more than happy for the chance to finally bring down Zurg.
"'Scuse us."
"Coming through."
Buzz looked down, and to his annoyance, the LGM stowaways were once again trying to go ahead and rescue their friends. While it was admirable, Buzz really wished that they would just let him, and his crew do their jobs.
"Get back on the ship and wait." Buzz ordered.
"Noooooo!" cried the LGMs, surprising Buzz.
"Now, I know this is personal for you, but I must insist." Buzz said.
"Noooooo!" they cried once again.
"Okay, you're clearly ignoring the chain of command here-" Buzz started to say.
"We feel their pain! OHHHHH!" exclaimed the LGMs.
This caused Buzz to calm down as he came to realize what the problem was.
"Oh, oh, oh, oh, right. It's their mind link thing."
"How do you do that anyway?" Warp asked.
The LGMs collected themselves and replied, "The Unimind…"
"Unimind?" asked Izuku.
"The mystery orb that links all of LGM-kind. It's on their home world. Of course, that's need to know classified." Buzz explained.
"Hey, I'm your partner and Izuku's your apprentice, we need to know." Warp said with a grin.
"Oh, you do?" Buzz asked, also grinning.
"Anything else we should know?" Izuku asked.
"No, I'd say you're up to speed." Buzz replied.
"Okay, thank you." Warp said.
The doors to the next room opened and the three readied their weapons.
Meanwhile, Zurg had the captive LGMs strapped to chairs as he continued his interrogation.
"Tell me of your mind link! Tell me your secret!" Zurg demanded.
"Never!" denied the LGMs.
"Oh… I guess I'll just have to pick your brains." Zurg said with a chuckle before demanding, "WHERE'S MY CRANIAL DISSECTOBOT?"
He laughed maniacally as a large red robot with multiple scalpel blades appeared behind him, only to be blasted to smithereens with the door behind it. Looking back, Zurg watched as his oldest nemesis charged into the room, laser brandished and ready to fire.
"Ah, Lightyear." Zurg said calmly.
"Evil Emperor Zurg, but the authority of the Galactic Alliance you are hereby charged with attempted dissection of Star Command personnel!" declared Buzz.
"I shall destroy your galactic alliance, but first, I shall destroy you!" exclaimed Zurg who pressed a button on his suit. "Well, not personally. Hornets, destroy Buzz Lightyear!"
Descending from the ceiling were several yellow and black robots that had triple-barrel plasma cannons built into their arms. Each one took aim at Buzz who looked around the room and could see that he was drastically outnumbered. Descending down from the roof was an escape platform that Zurg had created for emergency exits such as this one. Before Buzz could do anything, the hornets opened fire on him forcing him to shift his attention to them while shooting his laser to try and thin out their forces. This gave Zurg the time he needed to get on the platform.
"Prepare to die, Buzz Lightyear!" Zurg said as he began to rise up.
"Not today, Zurg!"
Buzz took a shot at him, but it was too late. Zurg has gone through the roof and made his escape. Buzz narrowed his eyes. Zurg wouldn't get far so long as he had anything to say about it. But first things first, he had to take out the hornets before they destroyed him. He shot the restraints off of the LGMs and destroyed four hornets before deploying his wings.
"Hop on!"
The LGMs didn't need to be told twice and quickly got on as Buzz took flight and flew around the room destroying hornets with his laser blasts. But one of the shots from the hornets hit dangerously close to Buzz and made one of the LGMs lose his grip and fall. Luckily Buzz acted quickly and caught him just as Warp and Izuku came down on the same platform that Zurg escaped with and crushed the remaining robots.
"Backup?" asked Warp.
Buzz landed and set down the LGMs retracting his wings as he said, "Always a dramatic entrance, Warp, and you dragged Izuku along for the ride, I see. Let's go after Zurg!"
That's when Zurg's face appeared on several monitors.
"Not today, Lightyear! For I started the self-destruct sequence on my way out. It is a moon of doom, now!" cackled Zurg.
"Self-destruct in sixty seconds…" said a computerized voice.
"Sixty seconds?" Izuku asked, a little concerned.
"All the time in the world, kid." said Warp.
They ducked as more hornets appeared and started shooting up the place, forcing them to draw their weapons one more time.
"Uh-oh!" yelped the LGMs.
The rangers quickly returned fire as they started destroying the hornets.
"Get to the shop! Blast off!" Buzz ordered as he, Warp, and Izuku leapt over the railing.
"But Buzz!-"
"That's an order! We'll meet you in orbit" Buzz told the LGMs.
"Self-destruct in forty-five seconds…"
The LGMs and their stowaway buddies quickly made their escape, being quite fast for little guys, and Buzz and his crew kept fighting even as Zurg mocked them over the monitors.
"Farewell, Lightyear! This time you shall not escape!" laughed Zurg.
Buzz just shot the monitors with his laser, destroying them.
"Just watch me, Zurg!"
More and more hornets continued to spill into the room as Buzz, Warp, and Izuku kept shooting, not willing to give up even in the face of such odds. But that's where it all went bad. One of the hornets stumbled and fell back into an explosive device that caused a chain of explosions that sent Buzz and the others flying in opposite directions of each other. Buzz recovered quickly and got to Izuku as they destroyed the remaining hornets. And a good thing, too, because the base was now on fire and likely to explode at any second!
"Hurry, Izuku, it's time to get out of here!" exclaimed Buzz as he activated his flight pack.
"Wait, where's Warp?" Izuku asked.
They heard a cry of pain and ran to a ledge where they saw something they feared wouldn't happen. Warp was trapped! One of his arms and his entire lower body was pinned beneath fallen debris. They quickly jumped down and tried to get him loose, but it was useless! The debris was too heavy and there just wasn't enough time! And from the looks on their faces, even though Warp was still giving his usual cocky smile, they knew this to be true.
"Self-destruct in ten seconds…"
"Both of you… get out of here!" urged Warp.
"No!" exclaimed Buzz.
He and Izuku each grabbed Warp and tried to pull him free, but it was no use. They couldn't do it.
"Go…!" exclaimed Warp.
"We're partners!" Buzz declared.
"We're not leaving you!" cried Izuku, tears beginning to fall from his eyes.
Hey, give him a break. He's a kid, and he's also highly emotional due to his own genetics.
But Warp wasn't giving them the option of dying with him.
"I SAID GO!"
With the last of his strength, Warp activated Buzz and Izuku's flight packs and sent them flying out of range of the blast faster than they could try to stop themselves.
"WAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRP!" they cried out.
After forcing themselves to stop, they flew down as fast as they could to try and free Warp from the exploding base, but…
"Self-destruct in 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…"
It was too late.
The entire base was destroyed in a giant ball of fire that left a huge hole in the moon and took Warp Darkmatter with it. And there was nothing either master or apprentice could do about it.
Sometime later at the disc shaped space station that is Star Command HQ, every single Space Ranger, young and old, fully fledged and cadet, rookie and veteran, was gathered for the funeral of one of their best rangers. Buzz and Izuku stood at a podium by the empty casket that would have held Warp's body if there was one to recover. But there was none. They had checked high and low to try and at least give their fallen friend a proper burial. But there was no body to recover. Not this time.
"Space Ranger Warp Darkmatter sacrificed himself for the safety of his fellow rangers. For the success of his mission. I miss him very much." Buzz said, giving Warp a beautiful eulogy.
The atmosphere at Star Command was somber as everyone mourned the death of one of their greatest Space Rangers, who fell in battle against the Evil Emperor Zurg. His life cut short by a madman who was hellbent on taking over the entire universe. Later on, after the service, Izuku looked through the hologram projectors and found one hologram that held fond memories for him. It was a hologram photograph of himself, Buzz, and Warp after they had successfully taken down a human trafficking ring in the Alpha quadrant. A crime lord was looking to sell human slaves across the galaxy, but with Izuku's help, Buzz and Warp successfully put a stop to them and incarcerated every last gang member while freeing the would-be slaves. This was Izuku's first real mission as a Space Ranger apprentice… and one of his fondest memories of his time learning under Buzz and Warp.
Which just made the man's death hurt even more for Izuku who was still struggling not to flood Star Command with his tears.
What can he say? He's a Midoriya, and members of his family are highly emotional and tend to cry a lot. Par for the course.
"Izuku Midoriya personal log; In one of Zurg's crazed attempts to destroy my mentor, Buzz Lightyear, he has robbed the universe of a good man. That man was Warp Darkmatter. Buzz's partner… our friend…"
Izuku walked up to Warp's old locker and with a heavy heart deleted the man's name from the nameplate that once belonged to him. With his head hanging low, Izuku slowly walked out of the locker room to up his training and become a full-fledged Space Ranger sooner so he could return to Earth, become a hero, and prevent anyone else from going through such things as he and Buzz have had to.
But he intended to involve no one else in his extra training.
He just couldn't after what happened to Warp.
"From this day onward, I vow that no others will ever be put in harm's way because of Buzz… or because of me. I work alone."
***The End (For Now)***
Ending A/N: And so, ends the one shot of my potential story idea! Let me know in the reviews if you want to see this oneshot being made into a full story, or even if you'd like to try your hand at the idea and write your own version. But until that day comes, thanks for reading and have a magical day!
