Paige shot up, breathing heavily. She looked around and saw Seth was curled up by the base of a tree, and Brook was sprawled out a few yards away. Paige put a hand to her head, realizing then that she had sweat running down her forehead. What a horrid vision to wake her from her slumber.
She eyed the horizon, being able to make out what appeared to be a fortress. Her hidden sixth sense began to kick in. Someone close was inside. As much as Paige wanted to go, she understood it would be rash and in vain to go alone. Paige sucked in a deep breath, knowing the boys would grumble at her because she woke them from their peaceful slumbers.
"Homura needs us. If that nightmare was any indicator, we are all in danger," Paige mused to herself. Sighing, she got up and tapped both Brook and Seth on their shoulders. They began to stir, and then shot up. They looked around until their gazes landed on Paige. Seth was getting ready to speak up before Brook beat him to the punch.
"Paige, you look like you've seen a ghost. What's wrong?" Brook asked softly. Paige sucked in a deep breath. Her eyes darted from Brook to Seth, then to the ground. She was still trying to process a way to tell the boys what she had seen during her resting hours. Since her parents were robots, she had also been built a robot. Paige didn't truly sleep; her processors just went into a power-conserving mode, which put her into a light sleep. That didn't stop her from having visions though.
"I had another vision…." she admitted. Seth perked up, seeing that Paige had been having visions nonstop for a few weeks now. Brook and Seth both nodded, allowing their nindroid friend to continue. "Homura was…trapped," Paige continued, "She is being held in some sort of fortress. The leader has her as bait for the rest of us to come. If we all go without Sensei, we will be putting Ninjago in even more trouble."
Brook and Seth sat where they were, their mouths gaping at the vision their friend had experienced. Nothing was said, and time seemed to crawl by. Brook fidgeted with his nunchucks, trying to keep his composure. Seth was fiddling with his curl, and Paige was pacing back and forth. Nobody could come up with anything, but they couldn't just ignore the tension that had arisen amongst the three. What are they going to do?
"We have to get Sensei before we go," Brook said. He and Paige turned to look at Seth, waiting for his instructions. They noticed Seth force a rather large lump down his throat. "Seth? Seth? What's wrong?!"
The young earth-wielder took a deep breath to compose himself. He was on the verge of a mental breakdown due to a piece of him knowing he was responsible for Homura being captured in the first place. He was thankful for his shaggy black curls; they hid the tears that were running down his face. From his lack of response, Paige went to check on him and saw the tears Seth fought even then to hide from her. Immediately, Paige and Brook lifted his arms around their shoulders and began to walk up to the monastery.
"Sensei!" Brook and Paige called in unison. They opened the doors, rushing to their sensei's room. Cole looked up, seeing his son being supported by his two comrades. He quickly stood up, not asking any questions.
"Sensei, he just started freaking out and not responding, what do we do?" Brook asked, worry dripping with every word. Cole's face was filled with an alarmed reaction, but it quickly faded to the normal, nonchalant countenance he always wore. "What do we do?!" the master of lightning repeated.
"Lay him down here. Go and get him some tea," Cole calmly said. Brook and Paige nodded and sprinted out to the kitchen. Seliel came in, her eyes wide when she saw her son lying on the ground. "He's not hurt-well, physically he's not…"
Seliel sat down beside Seth. She ran her fingers through his black curls. She could hear his faint whimpers every now and then while she stayed rooted to her spot on the ground. Seliel gently moved Seth's bangs to the side and was shocked at the result. It wasn't every day she saw her son with tears running down his face.
"Seth? What's wrong?" Seliel asked softly. Seth whimpered in response, clutching his hands tightly. Seliel continued to run her fingers through her son's tangled curls, hoping to get some answers. "You didn't get hurt on a mission, did you?"
Cole had gotten the tea from Brook and Paige and was sitting beside Seliel. "N-No. I've failed them-I failed her," Seth stuttered out. He looked down at the cup of tea, seeing his reflection. He silently laughed, seeing how messed up and pathetic he looked. How could he be any sort of hero when he had red puffy eyes and mangled hair crying to his mommy?
"How can you blame yourself for Homura getting herself captured?" Seliel asked. She looked at Cole, trying to read his expression.
"No! Paige and I were eavesdropping when she was playing on her ukulele! Don't you understand Mom?! She ran away because of me!" Seth cried. He clenched his hands into fists, the tea splashing violently in the cup. Some droplets fell onto his legs. Seth fought back a whimper of pain as he saw small red welts begin to form.
Cole placed a hand on his son's shoulder and spoke with a soft voice. "Nobody ever said being a leader would be easy. It was never going to be easy with four teenagers under the same roof," he added with a short laugh, "I'm sure Homura would forgive you. Knowing her, it was never her intention to get herself caught." Seth's grip on the teacup lessened, but whether it was from relaxation or from fear of breaking the cup, nobody could be for certain.
"Seth, nobody is blaming you but yourself. You are your biggest obstacle," his mother continued to speak softly. Seth nodded his head. His eyes closed as he relished his mother's touch to his curls. It was delicate-like; he would break if she prodded him too hard. His thoughts and constant self-belittling faded, and were replaced with nicer thoughts. His hands let go of the teacup, and his mind fell into a well-needed sleep.
…
Brook and Paige waited patiently outside the room. The door opened, and they jumped up, expecting to see Seth. It was their sensei, not one of their leaders. Brook jumped up, wanting to start talking at a million miles a minute. Paige simply placed her hand over the lightning wielder's mouth and shook her head.
"Seth is resting, as you both should, as well," Cole said. It was more of a command than a statement. They watched Cole leave, then headed to the corridor.
"Seth seemed pretty upset," Paige commented. Brook nodded his head. He folded his legs and sat beside Paige. "I sense that his sense of security and mental stability has been less than good without Homura by his side," she spoke to Brook, "I do not know if he has the mental capacity at this point to continue leading."
"I don't know. Usually, those types of choices are left up to those two…" Brook said. Paige shook her head.
"One of them is being held hostage, the other is in an abyss too far gone to save him unless we can get the other one back. Think about it, Brook. Homura is the one that Seth bounces ideas off of."
"So you're saying that it's broken Seth to a point we might not be able to retrieve the pieces?"
"Precisely."
Brook let out a deep breath. If things were looking the way they were, it wasn't going to only be Homura they had to save.
