Enclosed in the bathroom of the FBI jet, Neville is sweating bullets. In his heart, he knows his friend has not committed any crime and he thinks that if his team had bothered to make the connection between Harry's image and the fact that the victims all have similar features then they would know this too. Neville also knows that regardless of his relationship with Harry, they need to do this.
However his brain is thinking the opposite. He knows Harry was a very angry man before he left the Auror squad. He knows why he left and it was definitely justified, but he knows what anger can lead to and he knows Harry had always had a temper in school that never quite went away as he grew older.
Though if it is Harry that is responsible, none of the evidence actually makes sense unless he is trying to draw attention to himself with the physical similarities between himself and the victims. Even then, that also doesn't paint a picture of the Harry he knew, the one who hated his fame, his notoriety.
Neville pulls out the miniature two-way mirror he and Harry had charmed during their Uni days and sends a pulse through to it's twin to let the wizard on the other side he wished to speak with him.
He waits a few seconds before it starts to vibrate letting him know that Harry was calling through.
"Neville"
"Harry, I know we'll see each other on Saturday but-"
"They think I'm involved don't they?"
"Yes Harry, but they haven't dug up much about you and I think they are already suspicious due to our Hogwarts information isn't public - and it's not helping your case"
Harry pauses here before replying.
"Look, you know it's not me - if it was, I wouldn't be stupid enough to commit these in my own hotels,"
"Harry I know you're not a fan of law enforcement, but please PLEASE don't make them even more suspicious of you"
He hears a sigh on the other end "Neville I gotta go get on my flight. I will see you soon" with that Harry shits off the connection.
Neville is a little put out that his friend seems to be deliberately unhelpful, but he puts up his mask and walks out to join his team. Though he must have raised their suspicions as they all turned to look at him.
"Everything all good Longbottom?" asks his boss and wow all of a sudden he feels as if he's regressing back to timid first year Neville.
"Yeah boss, all good" he replies.
"Hey so what's the deal with your friend?" asks Emily
"What do you mean?"
"You mentioned he was in law enforcement, but is no longer. Why did he leave?"
The profilers filed away the reaction Neville gave before replying; it was a look of unease. trying to think of a muggle friendly story. Neville settles in for a long flight.
"Do you remember the terrorist attacks in London about eleven years ago?"
He got a few nods in reply. "Yes, there were some bombings around that time" says Morgan in thought.
"Yes, well at the time Harry and I were still in school and most of the perpetrators had been arrested awaiting trial. Harry was recruited into the team that caught these guys right out of school - mostly out of desperation because there were not many of the older generation left after those attacks and people were too scared to join" Neville takes a sip of tea before continuing.
"The trials were long winded and Harry was involved in chasing down those that avoided arrest. What you need to understand is that at our school, there was a lot of discrimination between houses. Gryffindor was seen as the good guys and Slytherin the evil ones. Unfortunately the inter house enmity continued on with the older generations even after they left school. It didn't help that most of the kids in Slytherin all had at least one parent that was arrested" here he takes a breather.
"The faction responsible for the attacks were lead by one man. A man who fashioned himself a "dark lord". His name was Tom Marvolo Riddle. His followers were called Death Eaters and they all had children at the boarding school I went to"
"What happened next should not have happened. While those that were proven to be Death Eaters were trialed and convicted, if they were found guilty...their children were also condemned. What should have happened is that those children would have been adopted by approved families. What instead happened was that the children were forced to watch their parents get sentenced to death. Unknown to Harry, most of the task force had their own agenda were too corrupted by the decades of fighting. Most of the force went behind everyone's back and massacred those children. None were left alive. Poor Harry, he was one of the only ones in the force who believed that the sins of the father should not be put on their child's shoulders. Kind-hearted Harry...he would've adopted them all if he could have."
There was absolute silence with a touch of disgust that filled the room.
"Are you serious?!" exclaimed Rossi
"Wha-how could they DO that?" JJ in tears at the thought of so many children and the loss of life.
Crying could be heard coming from Garcia. Hotch, though, looked murderous. "Tell me that these people were also convicted"
"Y-yes, they were - but they were left off lightly" replies Neville.
"What happened to Harry?"
"He lost faith in the justice system completely by then and you read about the abuse that was covered up. Authorities failed him time and again. He retired from the force shortly after. He was labelled a traitor for that, because he was so outspoken over the massacre and refused to see that it was the "right" thing to do" Neville shakes his head.
"He was harassed so much, lost so many friends over it, he packed up and left and hasn't returned once to England"
"So, this is a guy who has no reason to trust LEO's and all the reason to just be very unhelpful" states Hotch.
"Yeah" says Neville sadly.
