Prompt: Tattoos
Most people had soulmarks. The soulmarks were a tattoo of something their soulmate wore a lot, especially around the time that they would meet said soulmate. Sometimes the soulmarks would be vague enough for people to not be able to immediately tell who their soulmate was - a school uniform, for instance, was quite the popular soulmark for those who met their soulmate when they were in high school. Kaito's soulmarks weren't as vague as that, however.
The problem was, he had two of them. A deerstalker and a pair of glasses.
Having two soulmarks was confusing. Did his soulmate wear both of those items at the same time? Or did he have two soulmates, one who wore deerstalkers and one who wore glasses? He couldn't figure it out, because from his research, both were possible. Having more than one soulmate wasn't exactly common, though, leading Kaito to suspect it may be the former. Wearing a deerstalker was rare enough, but with a pair of glasses as well, his soulmate was sure to be recognizable.
Aoko met her soulmate first. Her soulmark had been a strange headpiece with a golden snake on it, and the moment Kaito had seen Koizumi Akako wearing that headpiece, he knew that she must have been Aoko's soulmate. He told the two girls about this, and eventually they started dating. And still, Kaito waited for his soulmate (or soulmates).
He discovered that yes, he did have two soulmates, when he met the first one.
Hakuba Saguru, a great teen detective from England, and the number one Sherlock Holmes cosplayer.
Kaito had expected the deerstalker to mean his soulmate was some hunter of some sort, not a cosplayer. Yet as he stared at the boy challenging him at his own heist, his only response was, "What the fuck."
Saguru stared back, surprise flashing in his eyes. "Excuse me?"
Kaito groaned. If it weren't for his hat, he would have run a hand through his hand. "What the actual fuck? You- you wear that enough for it to become my soulmark?!"
"...oh," Saguru replied. He pulled up the sleeves on his own wrist and Kaito spotted his soulmarks. A monocle and a pair of glasses. "I see. We're soulmates."
"Shouldn't this mean more to you?" Kaito hissed out, annoyed with his apparent nonchalance at the situation. They were soulmates and Saguru didn't seem to care.
"It does," Saguru replied. "But a heist is hardly a place to talk about it, right? Meet me afterwards at my place?"
"Too risky," Kaito pointed out, forcing himself to calm down. This was his soulmate - one of them - and yes, he was a detective and apparently constantly cosplayed Sherlock Holmes, but Kaito should still get to know him, shouldn't he? "There's a restaurant nearby with fast food. You want to go there?"
Saguru seemed to consider for a bit, then said, "Sure."
Kaito nodded. "Great. See you after the heist."
He picked up the painting and Saguru called out "Wait!" but Kaito was already out the window.
They met at the restaurant, Saguru still in his Holmes cosplay (Kaito really needed to get over that, but seriously, it was his fucking soulmark) and Kaito now in a simple disguise of all black, with a cap covering his face. Just because Saguru was his soulmate and that meant something to Kaito didn't mean Saguru wouldn't turn him in if he decided the law was more important than whatever was destined between them.
"So we're soulmates, huh," Saguru spoke up first.
"It seems we are," Kaito agreed, tapping his fingers on the table nervously.
"Do you wear glasses?" Saguru questioned. When Kaito shook his head, Saguru sighed. "I guess this means we have another soulmate, then."
"We'll find him," Kaito replied.
Saguru raised his eyebrows. "How do you know they're a he?"
"I'm gay," Kaito replied.
Saguru breathed out a quiet "ah", and then they were back to awkward silence.
Kaito wasn't exactly sure what to say to his soulmate. The fact that they were a thief and a detective made this even more awkward. Saguru seemed to be thinking the same, because he finally cleared his throat and said, "I'm staying in Japan for a while. I'm going to Ekoda High School."
Kaito startled. "H-huh?"
Saguru raised an eyebrow. "You recognize the place?"
Kaito ducked his head and muttered, "Maybe." He shouldn't be that risky, he knew this. However… He sighed. "I… may or may not go there."
"Ah," Saguru said, a smile growing on his face. "I did think you were rather young. Hope to see you there, Kid-kun."
Kaito blushed at that. They bid each other goodnight, and Kaito disappeared into his room. Maybe the next day, he'd get to meet Saguru as Kuroba Kaito and not Kaitou Kid.
They fell into a relationship almost naturally. Saguru was a gentleman, more than Kid, and he would often give Kaito flowers or chocolates whenever he felt like it. Kaito enjoyed this, and he felt… loved, with Saguru. Sure, they hadn't been together long enough for Kaito to be sure it was love, but he felt that way. Whenever Saguru went back to England, Kaito felt a hole in his chest until Saguru returned. Aoko would tease him about it, and Kaito would tease her about Akako in reply.
Kaito would have been happy, just having Saguru, but knowing he had another soulmate out there and knowing how amazing his first one was? He was most definitely excited.
Then, when he saw the child on the rooftop, he almost fell off, because that kid's glasses were the exact same as the ones in his soulmark.
He would have written it off as just a coincidence, if it weren't for the child staring back at him with that same shock. In fact, looking directly at his… his monocle.
Kaito groaned. "Why do I have a six year old as my other soulmate?"
The kid startled out of his initial shock and said, "Do you say that to all your soulmates when you first meet them?"
"Yes, I did in fact ask my other soulmate why he constantly wears Sherlock Holmes outfits," Kaito muttered, and when the child's face seemed to brighten, he snapped, "No! No Holmes cosplays for you!"
The child rolled his eyes. "Anyways. What's your name, thief?"
"Kaitou Kid," Kaito replied.
"Edogawa Conan," The child introduced himself. "Detective."
Kaito almost facepalmed. "Another detective?!"
Conan rolled his eyes. Again. Wow, he was rude. "Yeah, I am. Edogawa Conan isn't my real name, though." When Kaito's eyebrows shot up, Conan replied, "I'm not telling you my real name until you tell me yours, but this… is neither the time nor the place." He sighed, then scribbled down something on a sheet of paper, handing it to Kaito. "Meet me later."
Kaito nodded. "Yeah, sure."
Then Conan shot off fireworks and Kaito felt dread as he stared into the too intelligent eyes of his young soulmate.
His soulmate shouldn't even be that young, anyways.
As Kaito found out, Edogawa Conan was really Kudo Shinichi, a 16 year old detective, which… almost made sense, except…
"So how did you shrink?" Saguru spoke up. Kaito had brought him to the meeting as well. If Conan (well, Shinichi) was their soulmate, Saguru should also meet him.
"Poison," Conan replied, then winced. "It's… a long story. I promised myself that if I met my soulmates during all of this, that I wouldn't let them get involved."
"We want to help," Kaito replied to that, digging his fingers in his pants. Stupid self-sacrificial soulmate. "What if you die during this?"
Conan stared at them, then sighed, "Fine. I'll tell you about the organization."
The organization, as it turned out, sounded an awful lot like the one Kaito was facing, leading to them striking an alliance.
And slowly, Kaito began to fall in love with Shinichi. They had a strange relationship, especially since they mainly knew each other as thief and detective, not even classmates like Kaito with Saguru. Kaito came over sometimes but always had to pretend to be a babysitter. But in the end, he had feelings for Shinichi, especially when the organization finally fell.
Saguru seemed to be catching feelings, too. The two bonded over their love for Holmes, and often hung out because of that as well. The three of them worked well together during the Sunset Mansion case, and even later during other cases. And when the organization was defeated…
Kaito and Saguru finally invited Shinichi to join the relationship.
Now, as Kaito laid between his two soulmates, feeling their warmth on either side of him, he smiled as he lightly traced the tattoos on his arm. A hat and a pair of glasses.
