The Princesses' Ocean Adventure

Writer's Month 2022

Finally, after years, Merida had convinced both her parents to allow her on a journey. Her ma still didn't like it, but she had proven herself over and over again. She was ready to be a queen one day, yet while that day was still far away, she should get her adventures. That was what her father had said. Because there would be no adventurous travels once she would be queen.

She got a ship and a crew and she got to sail off. At first, her travels went incredibly well. They anchored in a kingdom called Corona where they were privy to watch a beautiful lantern ceremony and she was welcomed by the young Queen Rapunzel. Surely, her mother would be proud of her for forging close relations to another kingdom, right? She was sure to visit Corona again one day.

There'd been an excitable, perky princess in the way too cold country of Arendelle to welcome her, but the kingdom itself didn't sit right with Merida. She preferred warmer climate.

Now, warmer climate she got. But at the cost of pretty much everything else.

There'd been a storm. One unlike anything else Merida had ever seen before. It tore their ship right apart. She could still hear the screams of her crew around her, ringing in her ears. With a breathless gasp did she sit up, haunted by the memory of the storm. No, not so much a memory. It was still going outside, she could see the rain and lightning outside.

"Hey. You're awake. It's okay. You're safe now."

Merida turned to look at the one who had spoken and oh. Oh, she was beautiful. With brown skin, adored with curious black symbols the likes Merida had never seen before, her dark-brown hair falling over her shoulders in wavy curls. Even her clothes had interesting patterns that Merida had never seen before. This country she had ended up in this time must be farther away from anything Merida had encountered so far. But oh, it was impossible to look away from the woman's eyes.

"Yeah... I... You saved me? Where are we? Where's ma crew?"

The other frowned at her for a moment, like she was concentrating hard. "Ah. Sorry, I'm, uh, you have an interesting accent? I've never heard anything like that. Your crew is fine. We fished them out of the water and they're being taken care of too. I'm Moana and you are on Motunui."

"Moto..." Merida furrowed his brows. "Mh. So we got lost along the way."

"I don't know," Moana smiled at her. "In my experience, it's hard to get lost at sea. The sea will bring you where you're meant to be. For now, rest some, okay?"

Moana had never met someone she could relate to as much as Merida. Heir to their leader, loving her home but longing to explore. They also had both dealt with shapeshifting in the past. Moana had gone to explore with her whole family, traveling to other islands and by now having made their way back to Motunui. It was so easy to talk to Merida. They spoke for hours, sharing their stories. Moana showed Merida around the island and it was just the two of them most of the time, while Merida's crew – with some help from the locals – repaired the wrecked ship.

"They're nearly done," Merida stared down at the ship.

Both were on top of the mountain, observing the repairs. Moana turned to look at her at that.

"You don't sound very happy about that. I thought you'd want to continue your journey."

"I am," Merida slowly reached out, resting her hand barely a breath away from Moana. "I just... Yer island is so pretty. It's a very pretty island. I like spendin' time here. With... you."

The redhead blushed so brightly, it clashed with her hair. Moana grinned, tilting her head.

"I've been talking with my parents. They know I'm drawn to the sea too. I... thought, perhaps I could join your ship and travel with you for a while. Because I like spending time with you too."

She reached her hand out to bridge that little space between their hands, taking Merida's in hers. Both leaned in, slowly. They lilted their heads slightly just so their lips could touch ever so gently.

"I'd like that," was the first thing Merida said when they parted. "If you'd come with."

"Good," Moana smiled against Merida's lips.

Merida woke up feeling warm and comfortable as the sun tickled her nose. Wiggling it, she turned to bury her face in her girlfriend's neck to avoid the sun. Just five more minutes. Nothing was more comfortable than waking up in her girlfriend's arms.

Which also explained so much. When she'd won her own hand in marriage, she thought it was just the sub-par line-up of suitors. But perhaps it had also been the fact that they were men. Now, if there'd been a line-up of princesses like Moana, oh, Merida thought maybe she wouldn't have minded. Well, she'd still have minded the part where she got treated like a prize to be won, but the prospect of marriage itself seemed much more appealing.

"Morning, Mer," Moana's voice was sleepy. "Come on, we should reach a harbor today, right? I want to see what adventure awaits us today."

That made Merida perk up. As nice as it was to sleep in Moana's arms, exploring all these new kingdoms and islands together with Moana was so much better. Finally, she had found someone who just... got it. Moana fundamentally understood the thrill of adventure, the urge to explore the world and not limit oneself. Quickly, Merida jumped out of the bed, startling Moana.

"Well, come on, Mo," Merida urged her girlfriend on. "We're gonna be late."

Moana chuckled fondly and shook her head. Though she was quick to follow. After getting dressed, the two of them headed upstairs on deck of the Brave Bear. The ship itself was gorgeous, maybe even more gorgeous after they had repaired it on Motunui, because the locals had added intricate beautiful carvings to the wood. Both, their local symbols, the ones Merida liked to trace on Moana's skin, as well as those of Merida's family. The ship was now like a union of both Merida and Moana's cultures and it was perfect that way.

"Look," Merida's voice quivered with anticipation as she pointed at the horizon. "Land."

And truly, far away after a stretch of beautiful blue, high buildings emerged. The potential this offered had both of them buzzing with excitement and Moana couldn't help but reach for Merida's hand, taking it to squeeze and convey her own excitement. Their next adventure awaited them.

Author's note: I got a request for writing Meridana this WM and the "ship" prompt seemed like a MUST DO for them ;D
