Prompt 14: Kitchen
Late Night Dinner
Asami was in the middle of studying some magic engineering course materials as she sat outside in the garden. She was sitting on a grassy patch, back resting against a big tree trunk, with her knees pulled up to her chest. She was somewhat hunched forward with her hands held out in the front, holding her notebook. She always did prefer studying outside than inside the public library since she was always stuck in her workshop the rest of her time anyways; had to get as much sunlight and fresh air as possible while she can.
Besides, it was honestly more peaceful in the garden, at least the one she escaped to compared to the other public gardens on campus was nicer. For one, it was more out of the way to walk to so no one came, meaning, no couples smooching it up in front of you. And two, little birds and critters would come up to her every now and then. They were cute and if she was lucky, she'd get to pet some.
Peace and quiet.
At least… until her best friend came out of nowhere, shouting and disturbing her tranquility. She sighed before saving the spot in her notebook and closing it shut.
"Asami Asami! Let's get some lunch, I heard Avatar Korra is swinging by the quad today!"
"Avatar Korra?" She repeated while raising her eyebrow. "Doesn't she always sell out in less than an hour?" She then looks at her wristwatch, "I bet you it's too late already."
"Yeah, that's why we gotta get there now! ASAP! Stop being pessimistic Sams!" She then grabbed Asami's arm, helping her up in a haste. "Yee of little faith."
"H-Hey! Watch it!"
"Come on you slowpoke, we gotta hurry!"
"Urghhhh, coming coming! Geez." Once Asami was on her feet, she rushed to put away her notebook while hobbling along the path. By the time she was packed up and ready, she ran with Opal down to the squad. Once there, they both gasp at the already long line. Asami then whistles before pointing out the obvious. "That's one long line, I told you it's impossible."
"Hey!" She slapped her arm, "If you weren't so far away we could have made it!"
Rolling her eyes, Asami crossed her arms. "Oh so now it's my fault?"
"Yes! Or well no but we totally could have made it today you know?" Opal then sighs in defeat. "You want to at least get close to watch her cook? I heard she was quite attractive."
Asami only shook her head with a smile. "I guess, we can watch for a second before heading to the canteen."
"Hey yeah!" She then grabs her arm, "Let's go!"
The two of them made their way towards the front of the food stand. There was a crowd as expected but to their luck, they found a decent spot to observe Korra work her magic. Asami's eyes widened when she saw her eyes. They were the brightest shade of blue she had ever seen and also the most beautiful person as well. She was struck in awe. Her looks were one thing but her amazing magic work was what made her heart skip a beat. If she didn't know better, at least of the rumors, she wouldn't believe it.
Korra was amazing at her work, cooking up a storm. She was already legendary for being the only person alive to use all four elements but made new covers when she opted to work in her field of passion instead of the royal guards. Many questioned her capabilities but that wasn't an issue once you saw her work. She was using air magic to cut and prep the food, water magic to season, toss and move them around, fire magic to cook the food, and earth magic to plate serve the food.
There was a reason why she sold out instantly.
One was her wonderful display of master using the four elemental arts and the other was the amazing flavor it packed. Asami wouldn't lie… she would love to test her food someday but the chances of that were extremely low unless she were to put all her time and energy into hunting her down. Oh well… maybe 'fancy' food wasn't her thing after all.
As she spaced at admiring Korra's handy work, she happened to make eye contact with Korra. Korra notices her and gives her a bright lopsided smile. That made Asami blush for some reason and she gave back a sheepish grin in return. After that, they didn't make eye contact again and Asami and Opal parted ways without even a single hello.
xXx
"Ugh… dang." Rustling her hair, Asami sighed as she looked towards the night sky. "It's already this late?" She stomached growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten all day. "I'm starving…" she finally looked at the time and to her horror, the canteen closed in ten minutes and she was about fifteen minutes away. "Shit."
She power walked as fast as she could. No matter how desperate she was for food, there was no way she was going to run. Especially after a long day in the workshop. Worse comes to worst, she'd just be hungry until breakfast. Hopefully, her body wouldn't give up on her but that was what her emergency pop tart stash was for. Not the healthiest but with a glass of milk, it'd do the trick.
Not to her surprise, the door to the canteen was locked. There were still people inside but they were just cleaning up for the night. Asami missed them by a little less than five minutes. Minutes she should have left her workshop earlier. She rustles her hair before sighing to herself again. "Guess I'm having pop tarts for dinner… again."
Walking away with her head in defeat, she made her way back to the dorms before her nose caught a whiff of a certain smell. Something savory and aromatic. A smell that was making her mouth water and stomach growl even more. Before she knew it, her feet were already making their way toward the delicious smell. Sure enough, she was surprised when she figured out what it was and who was behind it.
Avatar Korra.
Blinking once, Asami stood there in shock before twitching slightly when Korra looked up and made eye contact with her. Korra blinked as well before smiling and greeting. "Oh hey there. Good evening."
Asami blinked repeatedly, not believing that this was real. She finally snapped out of it and responded. "Hey there! Good evening."
Korra gave her a soft grin before speaking up again, "I wasn't excepting to see someone around this time. Were you up studying late or ticked with something in the workshop?"
She cocked an eyebrow at that. "How'd you know?"
She responded with a smile before pointing at her own cheek. "You got a little grease stain."
That comment makes Asami's face heat up. "O-Oh— how embarrassing." She turned away to wipe her cheek with the collar of her sleeve.
Korra only chuckled in response before earth bending a makeshift seat and table. "Come on, take a seat. I'll whip you up something."
"Wha—" Asami turned to face her with a surprised look. "Oh no, it's fine, don't worry about it. I can't bother you!"
She started cutting up some ingredients while starting the stove with a flick of her wrist. "Don't worry about it. Better than pop tarts with milk."
"Huh?" Her mouth fell slightly, "What— how do you know what I eat?!"
Korra only smiled before pointing in the direction of the dormitory. Asami turned to see where she was pointing before eventually, she realized where. Her dorm room. Her mouth dropped again, not knowing whether to be shocked that you could see her room from here or whether to be shocked that Korra had seen her once and possibly more.
"Don't worry, I only saw you like once. I pass around here sometimes when I head back home. I just so happened to glance up and recognized you from the quad."
Asami raised an eyebrow at that. "From the quad? That was like… last week. I didn't even get something from you so how…?"
At that comment, Korra blushed before clearing her throat. "Oh— that's uh… cause of your eyes!"
"My eyes?"
"Yeah, they're really beautiful so they left an impression on me you know?"
Humming suspiciously, Asami ended up taking a seat at the makeshift area that Korra bended. "In that case… I'll take you up on the offer."
Korra sprinkled in some salt before throwing her a bright smile. "Cool~ look forward to it. I don't have much left but it should be pretty decent."
Taking another whiff of the air, Asami cocked an eyebrow before snarking back. "Pretty decent? I'm pretty nothing you make is 'pretty decent'. You always sell out before most students even get a chance to buy."
Chuckling at that comment, Korra brushed off her comment before tossing around the food in her pain. "Thanks for the compliment but it's not as 'amazing' as people make it out to be. I'm pretty sure most come for the show and not the food."
Amused by that comment, Asami raised an eyebrow. She zoomed in to take in the details of her toned arms before mentally agreeing to herself. For the show indeed. "Well if it makes you feel better, whatever you're making smells ten times better than anything I've ever cooked."
Laughing at that comment, Korra finally plated some food. "Thanks." She then walks over to the seating area before setting down a plate of fried rice. "Enjoy." She then twirled a spoon in her hand before courteously handing it to Asami. "Ah, come to think of it… I don't think I ever caught your name."
Graciously accepting the spoon, Asami said her thanks before replying. "Asami, it's Asami."
"Asami huh?" Korra repeated with a smile. "Nice to meet ya. You already know my name but I'm Korra."
"It's a pleasure to formally meet you."
"Ditto, now go on! Dig in, it's best when it's warm."
"Thanks again," Asami smiled one last time before taking a healthy bite. The moment the spoon of flavor hit her taste buds, she let out an unintentional moan before taking another bite. One after another, she kept on chowing down, finishing the plate and cleaning up every last grain of rice. "Wow… that was delicious."
"Thanks, glad you enjoyed it."
Giving her a pleased smile, Asami started to reach for her wallet. "How much do I owe you?"
Korra was quick to shoot her down. "It's on the house, don't worry about it."
"But—"
"No buts! I enjoyed cooking you something. It's nice to cook with much pressure every once in a while, you know?"
"..." pursing her lips at that, Asami ended up slanting them. "I guess you can say that."
Korra gave her a bright grin. "It was fun. Feel free to stop by again. I'd be happy to feed you over letting you eat pop tarts for dinner."
"Hey!"
She belts a happy laugh before standing up. "I'm usually here Mondays and Thursdays, feel free to stop by then."
"... fine. I'll take you up on that offer but next time, I'm leaving a tip!"
"Don't expect me to keep it!" Korra shot back with a small grin.
"Just you wait, I'll pay you back one day!"
"Yeah yeah, shouldn't you be heading back now? I'm pretty sure it's past curfew."
"That's—" she looked at the time before her eyes snapped open. "Oh shit—"
"Later!" She waved at Asami who was lightly running back to the dorms.
Asami only waved back in response and that was the beginning of their newfound friendship.
