Chapter 3. Johnny Gets Hired on Broadway
Baby, it's me. I'm calling from New York City. I'm glad your roommate said you have a phone call. You were right. I am something after all! Mr. Champion asked me to do a double tour, leaps, and knee spins as well as some other moves like you saw me do in our final dance at Kellerman's. He liked me and I got hired to be one of the dancers in the cast of Hello, Dolly. They pay $7,700 a year. That's a fortune to me-$640 a month, more than twice what I make all summer at Kellerman's. You're going to laugh, though. I'm one of nine dancers who are waiters like that slimy Robbie who got Penny pregnant. At least I won't have to plate pickles!
"That's fabulous, my lover boy. I knew you could do it," said Baby.
It premieres on Broadway at the St. James Theater on Thursday, January 16, staring Carol Channing as Dolly. The music is by Jerry Herman. Maybe you'll be on a break from Mount Holyoke and you can come see me dance in the play. I'm in two scenes. In the first act, I'm in the number called "Put on Your Sunday Clothes." My scene in the second act is called "The Waiter's Gallop," and it's three segments where I have to dance for about 10 minutes. Between now and then, I'll be learning the routines and practicing with the cast. watch?v=xxwXqlNPv5c
I found out that ballet terms are used in Broadway dance and choreography. I'll have to learn the French words to know what dance moves to do at rehearsals. The dancing is kinda goofy—some is like a can-can; some is like Russian squat dancing; and it's tough. A lot more than doing the Mambo! But there are no partners or lifts! No freezing lakes to practice in. Ha. I can live at home and that will save me money.
Will you be going home for Thanksgiving with Lisa and your parents? I'm crazy to see you while you're in New York. I'd like to drive to your college now, but it's six hours round trip, and I have to practice with the cast every day.
"Our college doesn't have classes Thanksgiving week, so I'll be home on Saturday, November 23, through the 31st. Actually, if there's anywhere we could spend the weekend together, I can say I'm staying at Mount Holyoke to study. My parents will believe that. I'm always reading and studying. I can get a ride to New York on Saturday morning and meet you somewhere. I'm getting really good at not being honest with them. However, I'm not going to hide our relationship from them after this weekend."
That would be great, just great. I'll see if my cousin's using his beach house down by the bay. If not, we could stay there. Where can I pick you up? My big Irish family moved from Philadelphia awhile back, and we live in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. I have my Chevrolet and I got the window fixed! You won't be cold.
"That's amazing. I also live in Brooklyn-Prospect Park South-only a few miles from you. In the whole New York City area, it's a coincidence we live so near each other. I'll figure out where you can pick me up. I can't wait to see you. Johnny. I'll be counting the days." Me, too. Me, too.
