Chapter 11 Johnny's Flat
Hey, Baby. I've got some good news for you. It's been taking me an hour each way to go on the subway to the St. James Theater. From home, I have to walk to 86th Street and take either the 2 or 3 Subway and get off at Atlantic Avenue. Then I have to walk to Line 3 and ride across the East River 11 stops to Times Square – 42nd Street, and then walk 5 minutes to the theater. After our tiring dance rehearsal, I have to repeat the trip to go back to my pop's house. This is just tiring me out.One of the other dancers told me about a small flat in the Theater District that rents for $200 a month. It's only about the size of my cabin at Kellerman's but it has a small kitchen. The best thing is that it's just a few blocks to the theater. I won't have to spend two hours on the subway and I'll save money not paying for subway tokens. Plus when you come to the City, we can be together there.
"Oh, that's great. Terrific. I'm glad you'll be close to the theater and that you want me to come stay with you there," replies Baby.
That's a given. I can't wait to show you my own digs, especially the bed! [Baby giggles.]
Christmas
I got you a gift that I saw in a store window that reminds me of when we were practicing the lift in the lake. To me, it looks like a drop of water. The jeweler said it is a "baroque" pearl pendant necklace. But I don't know what that means. I hope you like it.
"Oh, Johnny, it's so beautiful, and I will wear it day and night. It will feel like you are close to me. Thank you so much. Here's your French lesson. 'Baroque' is a French word that means 'irregularly shaped.' Instead of a round pearl, this one is a teardrop and so very special."
Whew. I'm glad you like it. It's special like you. I've never bought jewelry for a woman before, but the sales lady said it would be perfect. I paid for it with my very first paycheck that you steered me to-the Hello Dolly dancing job.
"I got you something, too, but it's not anything to wear," said Baby. "I thought you might want a record player for your new flat. It's too big to wrap; I will put it in your car. I don't have any records for it yet, but we can gradually add your favorites."Oh, this is great. I don't have a record player, and you know how much I like music. Thank you so much. I know what my first record will be: "Cry for Me." I'll never forget that was playing when we made love for the first time.
More soon. I will continue this story as soon as I have time to write.
