Synopsis
The drama portrays the story of an unlikely romance between a tomboyish woman, who dresses like a man in order to get work, and a young food empire mogul. It contains homoerotic elements, as the man does not initially know of the tomboy's true sex.
Let's face it, the reality of a girl passing herself as a man and almost everyone around her believing it is a bit farfetched. That is the basis for this drama. All of the orbiting comedy, drama, angst and love circles around this unlikely scenario. How this drama pulls it off and makes it possible for you to suspend disbelief is that every other situation in this drama is grounded in an everyday reality.
The 17 episodes provided the background information on Go Eun Chan the eldest daughter of the Go family whose lives where turned upside down when the father passes away. At the age of sixteen she promised that she would take care of her mother and younger sister. Her appearance though tomboyish made it easy for others to mistake her as a boy rather than the girl that she is . She works constantly doing jobs as a Tae Kwando instructor for little children, delivering food, sewing dolls eyes, shelling chestnuts….. there is nothing she won't do to to keep her family from going into further chaos.
She doesn't have the luxury of dressing up, being a pretty girl who can buy cloths, shoes and make up to reflect who she truly is. Love is the last thing on her mind until she enters Choi Han Gyul's orbit and her whole world begins to tilt on it's axis.
Blending comedy and high angst of the stories within the stories of Coffee Prince , the writers didn't achieve the climax that the 17 episodes warranted. Their failure was in opening story lines but failed to deliver background information that brought the viewer to the ending that would be suitable. The storylines that were opened but not closed.
The baby of Yoo -Joo and Han Sung was introduced in episode 15 only to disappear in episode 17 … the buildup didn't warrant the let down.
The unrequited love of Sun - Ki introduced only to disappear and a possible new love appearance needed more in seeing who Sun-Ki really is
The Wannabee player of Ha Rim being played by his new love interest Byul can be a story in itself having two players in a relationship…. Who plays who?
The Scene with Hong Gae Sik and his ex wife was a token filler in that if it had any relevance to the story … why did she appear at all?
The biggest disappointment was that the writers introduced Han Gyul's biological parents and not reveal the background story of how his two fathers and their love for his biological mother led to his birth. For the writers to not have Han Gyul show any interest in who his real family is was disheartening at the least. Han Gyul spent his life in turmoil in wondering why he is the way that he is. The writer's leaving it with a business card and the word's: Here's my business card…. If you're ever in Sydney , look me up
That scene was more infuriating than informative.
I will attempt to place clarity on these and other issues that weren't fully resolved.
Episode 18
Episode 18 begins with a flash back of Episode 17 two years prior…..
Everyone's sad to see Eun Chan go, starting with her family, the men/ boys of the Coffee Princes, and of course, Han Gyul. Eun Chan goes to the airport alone to avoid a painful parting, especially with Han Gyul, and says her last goodbyes to him over the phone. Her last words before hanging up are a choked string of "I love you"s.
On the plane Eun Chan begins to cry as her heart breaks as to why she had to leave Han Gyul… Trying to wipe the tears the stewardess in first class tries to comfort her
Stewardess: Can I get you something to help your discomfort….. is this your first time away from your loved one?
Eun Chun tries to smile but the tears still come: yes… how did you know?
Stewardess: You have a ring on your finger and your sitting alone crying… you must love him very much
Eun Chun: I do …..
Stewardess: just think you'll be back to him before you know it
Eun Chun: that's the problem… I'll be away for two years….. I'm studying in Italy to better myself so that I can be equal to him and his family… we just found each other and now I'm leaving him
Stewardess: Most young girls wouldn't do what your doing… you must be a very strong girl….. to want to better yourself
Eun Chun: Thank you…. Thank you for talking to me….. I feel a little better
Stewardess: It's my pleasure… Would you like something to drink ... snacks… we will provide dinner a little later.
Eun Chun: Thank you I would like that
Meanwhile back in Seoul… Han Gyul has only one thing on his mind and he stays up all night so that he can call Eun Chan when she lands. The 12 and half hour flight along with the 7 hour time difference makes communicating with each other somewhat difficult… but this is what it's going to be like these next two years After several failed attempts they get to talk to each other
Han - Gyul: Eun Chan… did you get their safely?… did you miss me?
Eun Chan: There was a very nice Stewardess that talked to me… I was really missing you …. When will you come to see me?
Han - Gyul: I miss you too….. but want's done is done…. I'll try as soon as I get some time off… my dad has me working on franchising the Coffee Prince ….. Grandma has OK'd a second location….. this was all because of you… when you become that Top Barista … we will even have more people coming to our location…. You must be very tired from that long flight….. get some rest… I love you
Eun Chen: I love you too… Goodnight…. I'll meet you in my dreams
A flashback of Episode 16 ensues for both of them That night, Han Gyul and Eun Chan text back and forth.
Han Gyul: "Are you sleeping?"
Eun Chan: "Nope."
Han Gyul: "What are you doing?"
Eun Chan: "I miss you."
Han Gyul: "Let's meet in our dreams."
Donawhale – "Running"
After reading the last message, Eun Chan makes a swift decision, and gets up. She makes a lame excuse to Eun Sae, then sneaks past her mother out of the house. She runs through the streets and arrives, out of breath, at Han Gyul's apartment...He's shocked to see her there
Eun Chan: I missed you, so I ran over
Han Gyul can't trust himself to be near her this late at night, and won't let her inside. She pushes past him, and he keeps his distance, agitated at her every movement as she drinks wine, looks around his apartment, and wanders from room to room.
He insists repeatedly that she leave, and tries to occupy himself reading a book. Eun Chan: Do you hate me being here so much? Han Gyul: Not you, me. He tries to push her outside, but can't bring himself to touch her, so he resorts to dragging her toward the door by her foot. He manages to shove her outside, shutting the door and forbidding her from coming inside anymore (only in the daytime, and accompanied by Ha Rim).
Unfortunately, he's forgotten her shoes. She pounds on the door, and taunts him, saying she'll go off to Italy and be sure to have an affair with a handsome Italian man. Finally, Han Gyul cracks the door open and tells her he'll drive her home. She shoves her foot through the opening.
Han Gyul: Don't come in!... Take your foot out... If you come in, I'm not sending you home... I'm warning you.
Looking him straight in the eyes, Eun Chan squeezes herself across the threshold, and firmly plants both feet indoors.
The Melody – "Paradise"
Han Gyul stares at her intensely, understanding the choice she's made, then sweeps her up in a kiss. What is implied but not shown is their first lovemaking session. Eun Chan having never been with a man only knows that she can't be two years away from the man that she loves without him knowing what he has to look forward to when she comes back.
Han Gyul: are you certain this is what you want?
Eun Chan: you're the only man I will ever want….. but I know not what to do ….. teach me
With her legs wrapped around his waist and kissing him as passionately as she can Han Gyul carries her to the bedroom and gently lays her on the bed . Mother Choi called Eun Chan often to make sure that she was doing alright and that this time away will be beneficial to both of them in that the heart become fonder when time and distance tries to keep true love apart.
Grandmother even thwarted from her convictions and would send her some spending money to relieve some of the pressure this contract she made with her would be a little more tolerable.
During these two years Han Sung and Yoo-Joo go through a revitalization of their stagnate 10 year relationship with the loss of their baby. The loss of a baby usually destroys many couples….. the conversation that they had after was very telling
Yoo - Joo crying in disbelief: This baby was the only good thing I've done and now it's gone….. Am I being punished for my selfishness?….. Tell Me Han Sung …. Am I really that bad?
Han Sung with tears flowing and his heart broken… his once infectious smile is quivering for words to comfort Yoo - Joo and himself: If you are to blame …..then blame me also… I thought this baby was our miracle that washed away the troubles we placed on ourselves these past years.
Yoo- Joo: We are not good for each other… if this is our reward for being together… I'm too selfish ….. I only think of my needs… this was the first time I thought I was willing to do something for you…. But I still put myself first before the baby…. How could you still want me…. I'm not deserving of anyone's love
Han Sung: I've loved you from the first moment I saw you…. I loved your independence and your free spirit….. giving you complete freedom without ground rules was my mistake …. I shouldn't have assumed you understood me completely…..having sex and making love only kept us close for that moment…. I fully never tried to understand what your needs were .
Yoo - Joo: I was a mess before... now I'm a complete wreck… just like my mother… I shouldn't have even tried being a mother…. Why did she have me ?

Han -Sung : You have me….. I married you… that says a lot about you… Let's face it Han Gyul was like a lost puppy that followed you home and you like having him give you that adoration as long as he didn't place any strings on you
Yoo -Joo : Can we overcome all of our shortcomings … we both like our jobs , but the jobs take everything from both of us Han - Sung: That's one of my shortcomings… I'm not as spontaneous as you are… I promise I will work on it…. Seeing Han Gyul and Eun Chan has made me realize that…. They can have fun at a drop of a hat…. So when you want to do something spontaneous tell me
Yoo -Soo: I'm not going to be your mother… I'm not good in that department, so you have to meet me half way
This conversation led to what we were shown in Episode 17, Hang -Sung planned a romantic anniversary evening at a hotel, Yoo-soo suggested a trip, they played and laughed together, riding bikes and hugging and kissing on the back of a pickup truck…. They learned many things from Han Gyul and Eun Chan's love for one another and used them to their advantage.
They were rewarded on their third anniversary when Yoo - Soo learned that she was once again pregnant. Both Parents made the baby their number one preference. Work took second place to the baby and each other's needs.
The other story lines that were mentioned in Episode 17 need further clarification.
Noh Sun- Ki is the mysterious one that shed's very little light on his situation. He is model handsome and he could have his pick of any of the student groupies that flocked to his Waffle Vending Cart. Catching Han Gyul's attention when he was forced by his grandmother to revitalize the abandoned Coffee Shop which would be renamed Coffee Prince. Because of Sun Ki's popularity with the young girls... Han Gyul decided to only hire attractive men to work at Coffee Prince.
The only thing that was mentioned throughout the series is that Sun Ki is from Japan and that he has been in love with a married girl with child by the name of Yuko. Yuko was in an abusive relationship being beaten by her husband on a continuous basis. Sun Ki fell in love with her and want to be with her. However, while trying to protect Yuko, Sun Ki was badly beaten by the crazed jealous husband. Yuko not to cause Sun Ki any more trouble took her son and left Japan without a word to Sun Ki until the day that he saw her in Soel. Sun Ki came to realize that his unrequited love of Yuko was just that …. As hard as he tried … Yuko was determined to leave once again… she left a note for Sun Ki telling him that he should live his life and no longer be concerned for her. His future is not with her.
Episode 17 introduced Ha Da -Young, the 24 year old girl asking to work at the Coffee Prince. Once hired Da- Young showed the same enthusiasm as Eun Chan and became accepted by the others. She was drawn to Sun -Ki's more so than the others especially after she showed that she could speak Japanese. Sun Ki and Da - Young formed a friendship that slowly developed into a bonding where the two became inseparable. Sun Ki even took Da- Young back to Japan to meet his parents and looked for locations for future Coffee Princess franchise.
Episode 17 showed the relationships of Hwang Min -Yeop and Go Eun -Sae solidify in that each needed the other to make themselves better. Eun - Sae saw the potential in Min-Yeop's body rather than his mind. Therefore she became the brains and he was the brawn. With each new photo shoot Eun - Sae promoted Min Yeop with the photographers so that he becomes the male model in demand and he was completely hers.
The writers tried to impose a playful banter when it came to Jin Ha Rim and Byul. The ongoings between the two was who could get the better of who while neither is willing to let go. Trying to make each other jealous only leads them back to one another and what happens to each other. Byul showed concernand her carring for Ha Rim when she questioned him about his familie's loss of the hospital. When the subject of breaking up came about…. Neither could admit the need nor desire for it…. They were more concerned about where they could do their next sexual tryst and not get caught.
To continue to spark of their sexual appetites… they discovered Cosplay and dress up as their favorite anime characters . Some of the revealing and erotic costumes made Ha Rim think of sex even more while Byul loved the tease until she was ready to satisfy herself. One could say this was a match made in heaven or one made in hell depending what mood their both in.
As I previously mentioned Hong Gae Sik was and remains an odd character… though talented in what he does, his attitudes are very strange. When he laughs at being used in relationship by his ex wife…. Does he like it that way? When he meets Mi- Sook- his ex wife in the grocery store and they exchange their brief histories from the last time they met.
Gae Sik: I understand you got married….Your son seems to be nice
Mi Sook: He's in the first grade
Gae Sook: You seem to be doing well Mi -Sook: I'm like every other woman… My husband gives me a handful of trouble…. Then I don't mind when I do things that I shouldn't
Sun Ki: Mr Hong… let's go the ice cream is melting
Mi Sook stands: Maybe you should go first this time

Mi -Sook looks flustered all most heartbroken... has she lost her control over him after all these years ….. he would never leave no matter what she did to him . Mother Go and Mother Choi both laugh and Grandma smirks but then smiles knowing that she now has a grand daughter that's no pushover… exactly what Han Gyul needs.
Eun Sae helps her sister in the dressing room and sees the transformation that is taking place. Now that Eun Chan hair has grown and no longer the dutch boy bowl cut… Eun Chen's pretty face and her captivating smile and star like eyes will be enhanced by the sleek fitted gown with it's push up bra giving cleavage to breasts that were once wrapped tightly.

The Wedding Ballroom was filled with flowers and candelabras and a long draped platformed walkway covered in rose peddles for the bride and groom to make their entrance to the bridal table .
As The Bride and Groom made their way hand in hand , the whispers throughout the room at how beautiful the bride was with her diamond tiara and diamond necklace accentuating Eun Chan long neck. No one could ever imagine they she was mistaken for a boy. After they were pronounced Husband and Wife The newly married couple did their bridal dance…. Eun Chan was especially worried since formal dancing was something she ever learned. Like every thing else Han Gyul told her to follow his lead and everything would be fine.
After Everyone left Grandma asked to talk to Eun Chan alone
Grandma: Eun Chan…. I was very unfair to you in the beginning…. I'm sorry… My ways made me believe that you were not good enough for Han Gyul….. It may be that Han Gyul may nor be good enough for you.
Eun Chan: Grandma , don't say that…. I never took your criticism to heart… You've given me more than anyone has…. That was the chance to prove myself… after my dad died…. No one gave me that opportunity…. I'm very grateful to you and I'm especially thankful that you allowed me to marry Han Gyul… I can never imagine my life without him

Life tends to play tricks on everyone's life….. some good... some bad….. but each is a learning experience... how one deals with the choices they face defines their life experience.
Han Gyul's life was an accumulation of events that could have easily destroyed him, but it didn't….. his need to understand himself let him see clearly what was missing. Once Eun Chan entered his life there was no looking back but looking forward to a future that he thought would never be.
Eun Chan's life was delt a bad set of cards but her resolve in understanding who she was only made her stronger and more resilient in achieving the happiness that she knew would be hers.
