Casita had adored the little boy ever since it was created.
Oh don't get Casita wrong! It loved all its residents, but it always had a special spot for its beloved prophet. The poor child was always so painfully shy, but carried so much love in his little heart, that even extended to Casita.
That's partly the reason why Casita gave the boy the power to see the future, to calm him, to let him know that it's going to be okay. But Casita hadn't expected the villagers to treat the child like a curse, for Alma to essentially abandon Bruno, for his sisters to slowly distance themselves from him.
Casita couldn't even begin to count how many times their poor Brunito cried silently in his room, how much Casita wished it could heal the seers' heart from the rejection. Casita wrapped the child in its magic, would rock him to sleep, would play with the child as he was slowly left alone.
Casita knew Bruno was smart, even before the gift that doubled it, but none chose to see his intellect for what it was. The adults saw it as the devil's work, the teens saw him as a freak, and children saw him as creepy.
It saw those bright hazel green eyes now be diminished, his once natural curly black hair lay tangled and less vibrant. His complexion grew paler as years passed, his figure now mostly skin and bones. But the one thing that hasn't changed was his bleeding heart.
Bruno adored his family, his mama, hermanas, caundo's, sobrio's and sobrina's. It hurt Casita that so few loved him back. One night, when Casita unearthed enough power, was able to curl around their miracle, because that's what Bruno was, and healed all that it could. Those dark purple eyes bags disappeared, his hair had shined as it had all those years ago, his skin regained color, those eyes glowed a bright green, filled with so much love that Casita couldn't understand. It couldn't understand because it wasn't a person.
And for the first time since its creation, Casita loathed. It hated Alma, for the pain she put on Brunito and the rest of the family. How she pushed and pushed for something that she didn't understand, she didn't know how it works. Abuela only saw good and bad. And for her, Bruno, their kind, powerful, and beautiful prophet, was bad.
When little Mirabel's gift ceremony arrived Casita was at its wits ends, cracks had started forming, the magic was waning, and they could only watch helplessly as Mirabel's door disappeared as she touched it.
Casita was displeased at the lack of care in Alma's tone as she spoke to Bruno. And bless the man, Bruno would never be able to say no to his mother, for he still wanted love from her, the family, from the Encanto.
But it wasn't meant to be, Bruno was terrified of what he saw, his home, his family was breaking apart. Mirabel was at the center, everything was falling down around her. Pain. Cracks. A broken family.
Tears fell from his eyes, he started sobbing quietly, he couldn't let his mama see this, she would no doubt blame Mirabel, a five year old. She wouldn't kick her out, but Mirabel would suffer for the rest of her life as the destroyer of the Encanto. She'd be seen as a threat, just like him. With his mind made up, Bruno looked at the vision, nobody can find this.
Casita watched Bruno fill supplies into his satchel, tears streaming down his face as he looked around his room. Rats ran towards him, they wanted to come.
Casita didn't want their miracle, their child, their son, to leave. They tried stopping him, begging him through actions alone to stay. Bruno could only kiss the nearest wall, pleading with them to let him go, that it wasn't safe for him, it wasn't safe for the family. However, that only made Casita angrier, it wrapped him in magic, whispering, 'YOU are our family' 'Please don't leave' 'Our prophet'.
But then Casita had an idea, it was a risk, something they've never attempted before. But for their Brunito, they try. A small green butterfly, only palm sized, fluttered towards Bruno. It landed gently on his hair. 'I will stay with you' Casita seemed to say.
Bruno teared up, a shaky smile light upon his lips. The doors to the Casita opened, his magic pulsed in unison with Casita. Bruno smiled, the green butterfly flew off his shoulder towards the ends of Encanto. He smiled and followed his family towards what he hopes will be a better future for everyone.
And unknown to Bruno his door went dark.
