Yu-Gi-Oh! Convergence of Champions
Episode 2: 'Chaos on Two Worlds'
DISCLAIMER: Yu-Gi-Oh! was created by Kazuki Takahashi.
Previously on Yu-Gi-Oh!...
On the world of Lancaster, the High Mage Heishin and his fellow magic-users incited a rebellion against the brave warrior-king Yasuke. Heishin intended to use the power of the Century Items in a ritual to awaken the massive titan Reshef the Dark Being and use its powers to remake the world in his image. However, his plan hit a snag when Yasuke stole the original items and ran to another Earth. Specifically, the Earth where the King of Games Yugi Muto and his best friend Joey Wheeler live!
Meanwhile, on another Earth, Cole Yeager was challenged to a duel by Simon Kaiser. Simon, a pro circuit champion, wanted to see if Cole was as strong as his father Robert - who's known as the "Ace of Cards" due to his skill as a duelist. Cole's knights and Simon's dragons clashed in a fierce duel until Cole was able to pull out his ace card, the dragon slaying Buster Blader, and win.
This has caught the attention of pro duelists Lucas Alfson, who uses a Viking deck; the cold and analytical Wesley Steele, and the lovely Britney Blaze - who seems to be interested in Cole as more than a duelist. Cole and his friends Hana Hikari, Eleanor Weston, and Eleanor's brother Eli are now juggling their impending summer break with preparing for the Excelsior Cup tournament, which will determine the next Duel Monsters champion…
Another World.
Avalon City.
Avalon City was known for its many landmarks. There was the massive statue of King Arthur (despite the fact that the legendary figure was more known in British and Welsh circles). There was its stadium, which was home to Duel Monsters matches and all kinds of traditional sports. And there was the mall. A three story structure, it boasted every kind of shopping experience known to man…and a great food court.
That was where four Duelists now resided. Cole Yeager sat reading a book, while Eli Weston was in the process of tinkering with his Duel Disk. Meanwhile, Eli's sister Eleanor was at the arcade locked in a fierce battle of Dance Dance Revolution with Hana Hikari. It was close, with neither girl showing signs of letting up.
"C'mon Ellie! Almost there…!" Hana shouted, leaping from pad to pad with amazing dexterity.
"Damn these long legs of mine…" Eleanor growled as she slammed into the pads with ferocity, trying not to trip.
Finally, the score flashed on the screen. The girls shouted with joy and hi-fived each other. "PERFECT SCORE!" they shouted in unison. Hana stepped down, smoothing out the wrinkles in her shorts.
"What a rush! Thanks for the help, Ellie."
"Ah don't mention it," the taller girl said, tilting her forest green baseball cap in response. "I'm just waiting for you to ask Cole to dance."
Hana quickly turned her head, her cheeks almost as pink as her hair. "I…I don't think he likes those kinds of games."
"No, you're hoping he'll like YOU."
"...is it that obvious?"
Eleanor leaned against one of the racing machines, folding her arms. "Is the Pope Catholic?" She then wrapped an arm around Hana's shoulders. "Don't worry, Hana - your secret is safe with me."
Despite her mortification, Hana smiled.
"Now this is how you write a wizard," Cole murmured to himself. "I mean if I had magic, I'd never go to school." A clicking and whirring sound caught his attention, as Eli finally finished inserting a new circuit board into his Duel Disk. The younger boy screwed together his disk and pulled the trigger switch, snapping it into position. He then dug into his backpack and pulled out a card, slapping it on the plate.
Immediately, Elemental Hero Knopse - a small, flower-like being with a cape made of petals - appeared. (Level 3/Plant/Earth/ATK: 600/DEF: 1000)
"Got it working?" Cole asked, placing a bookmark in his novel.
"Yes!" Eli cheered. "Knew it was a malfunctioning part."
"Way to go, Eli. You're gonna be running your own IT division one day!" Cole ruffled the other boy's hair playfully as Eleanor and Hana approached.
"So guys, who wants to hit up the food court?" Eleanor said. "I don't know about y'all but I could eat a pretzel or two."
"See now you've made me want a pretzel," Cole pointed out. "And pretty soon…"
"Mmm…" sighed Hana contentedly.
"Prezels…" Eli rubbed his hands together.
"See? The magic of mall pretzels."
Two Minutes Later…
As the four friends approached the food court, the other patrons turned and looked at them. Whispering began to intensify, and it freaked Cole out a little. He approached the pretzel stand. "Hi, can I get a-"
Suddenly four large pretzels, along with an array of dipping sauces and four drinks, was pushed in front of him! "Here - on the house!" The girl behind the counter said cheerfully, also pushing a scrap of paper towards Cole. He picked it up, and scratched his head.
"This is a weird receipt."
"It's my number. My name's Allie," the pretzel girl said with a wink.
"Oh…OH! Well, uh, thanks." Cole took the tray and brought it over to where everyone was sitting.
"Guys I just got free pretzels and a girl's phone number…what is happening?"
"Dude, yesterday you beat the Pro Circuit Champion - a guy who's never lost, ever. In front of a stadium half-full of the world's biggest duelists," Eleanor said matter-of-factly. "You're gonna get a LOT of attention, especially when the Excelsior Cup starts."
"Ellie's right," Hana added. "I didn't want to say anything, but two kids in the arcade said they wanted to be like 'Cole the Dragon Slayer' when they grew up."
"What, am I Sarah Michelle Gellar now?"
"People are starting to notice you. And it's a step towards building your own identity as a Duelist, away from your dad."
"You're right Hana. It's just…something I'll have to get used to, I guess."
Two boys approached the table. One timidly held up a poster to Cole. "Uh, Mr. Yeager? My name's Cody, and this is my friend Matt. We were wondering…could you sign this for us?"
"Uh sure! And Mr. Yeager's my dad, just call me Cole." Cole took the pen and looked at the poster, a small smile crossing his face. It was of the Buster Blader leaping at a Tyrant Dragon, sword withdrawn. He wrote "To Cody and Matt - be the best Duelists you can be! C.Y." Cody rolled up the poster. "Thank you so much!" he shouted and ran off. Matt gave the thumbs up to Cole. "I hope you win the tournament Cole, thanks!"
"On second thought, I can get used to this." Cole smiled.
"You'd better, hot stuff."
The four friends spun around to find Britney Blaze standing there, a sly smile on her lips. "B-Britney!" stammered Cole. "What…what are you doing here?"
"Just a little retail therapy," Britney said, motioning to two large bags. "Can I sit down?"
"Uh, sure," the knight duelist turned to his friends. "That's cool right?"
"I don't see why not," Eli said.
"Sure," Eleanor shrugged.
"It's fine," Hana said…a slight edge on her words.
"Great!" Britney picked up her bags and sat down next to Cole. "Like I was saying Cole, the spotlight's gonna get bigger and bigger for you. Pro Duelists get endorsement deals, primetime matches…the works."
"Yeah, that's how my dad made a living. That and some smart investments."
"And I bet a guy as skilled…and let's face it, as handsome as you…could do the same."
Heat flared up in Cole's cheeks.
Hana gripped her soda so tightly it threatened to burst.
"Yeah, who knows? Maybe you and I will duel in the Excelsior Cup!" Cole said, his mind racing to one of the few subjects other than books and cooking that he loved.
"That would be fun! I hope you won't take it too bad when I beat you."
"Is that a challenge, Ms. Blaze?"
"I didn't get to be a pro for my good looks, Mr. Yeager."
Hana snorted. Only Eleanor noticed it.
A beeping noise emitted from Britney's pocket, and she pulled out her cell phone. "Oh, sorry guys but I gotta run -my friend's in town, and we have plans for the Tag Force tournament." She picked up her bags, then turned to Cole. "Can I see your phone?"
The knight duelist handed over his phone to the blue-haired beauty. She typed in a few numbers, then handed it back to him. "There's my number. Call me…maybe one day we could be tag team partners." She walked off, then at the last minute turned and blew him a kiss, causing Cole's cheeks to redden even more.
Cole tugged at the collar of his jacket. "I see why they call her "the Blazing Beauty" now," he said before looking at the others. Eli's jaw was open, Eleanor was trying to suppress a laugh, and Hana looked like she wanted to stab someone. Finally, Eleanor burst out laughing. "Dude, you are TERRIBLE at picking up hints!"
"And terrible at sensing danger!" Hana blurted out.
This threw everyone for a loop.
"Danger? What danger?" Cole said.
"Have you ever considered that she might be flirting with you to throw you off your game? And then when you face her, you'll be too wrapped up in your own hormones, make a mistake and lose!"
"Hana, we were just talking. She's not that kind of girl."
"You don't know what kind of girl she is!" Hana exploded. She picked up her soda and flung it in the trash, then grabbed her purse and stalked off. "Baka…" she muttered venomously.
"I'll talk to her," Eleanor said, pushing back her chair and walking after the pink-haired girl. Eli scooped up his Duel Disk and ran after Eleanor. "Wait Eleanor, you're my ride!"
This left Cole alone...and very confused. "I wouldn't lose…we were just talking…" he muttered to himself. "And so what? There are way worse duelists I could lose to. It's not the end of the world."
Another Earth.
Domino City.
Kame Game Shop.
"We must find the Century Items," Yasuke said, leaning forward intently. "If we don't, it marks the end the world."
"Been there, done that pal," Joey Wheeler replied.
Joey and his best friend Yugi Muto - known the world over as the King of Games - had listened to Yasuke's tale of the betrayal by his high mage Heishin, as well as the sorcerer's plot to resurrect Reshef the Dark Being. Others may have written Yasuke off as crazy, but with everything Yugi, Joey, and their friends had been through over the years, it wasn't entirely out of the question.
"What makes this…Reshef so dangerous?" Yugi asked.
The blue armored warrior let out a deep sigh. "Reshef is a titan…a being born before the creation of the universe. He viewed humanity - and the current universe - as little more than an infection. And if he were ever awakened, he'd cut us out."
"And you beat him before?"
"Yes…3000 years ago when I traveled to Egypt. In fact, I had help from a young Pharoah…"
Yugi's eyes widened.
"Atem…"
"Yes. He used the power of the Egyptian Gods, while I used the power of the Century Items to seal Reshef away. And now Heishin seeks to undo that sealing as he believes that Reshef will grant him powers." Yasuke slammed a fist on the table they were sitting at. "I should have known! He always craved power…setting up the other high mages, asking for access to the temple…"
"Hey take it easy," Joey said. "These Century whoozits are scattered across the globe right? So Heishin can't take 'em."
"Unfortunately, it's not that easy. I didn't take the Century Rod, and Heishin holds that - intensifying his power tenfold. And as if that weren't enough, I suspect his fellow mages are looking for the pieces to complete their ritual…the God Cards."
"The God Cards!" Yugi stood up. "We have to warn Ishizu!"
Yasuke stood up, still feeling the aches in his bones. "How do we get to Egypt? Without my Century Coin, I can't teleport there…and Egypt is far away."
"We can take care of that."
Joey blanched. "Yugi, tell me you're not thinkin' of who I think you're thinkin' of…"
"Joey, you know as well as I do, he's the only one who has what we need."
"Forgive me, but who is this person you're talking about?" Yasuke asked.
A growl escaped Joey's lips. "Seto freakin' Kaiba…"
Egypt.
The Tomb of Pharoah Atem.
Ishizu Ishtar stood, the wind blowing through her jet-black hair. Her dark brown eyes turned toward the sky, as a rippling beam of energy shot down and slammed into the sands around her. When the dust cleared, Marthis stood there, his expression shielded by his pure white mask.
"I assume you've come for the God Cards," Ishizu said calmly.
This threw Marthis for a loop. "How-?"
"I may not possess the Millenium Necklace, but enough of its energy remains within me to sense that which does not belong here," the tomb-keeper continued, her eyes hardening. "And as long as I live, you will not defile the tomb of Pharoah Atem."
Marthis chuckled darkly. "That can easily be rectified, woman." He raised his arms toward the sky. "RAGEKI!"
A massive thunderbolt shot down toward Ishizu! Suddenly a black blur tackled her out of harm's way as the bolt struck sand, immediately turning it to glass.
Ishizu sat up, dusting off her dress. "I had the situation handled, Marik."
"Against lightning bolts?" her brother Marik said. "I doubt it."
Marthis turned toward the Ishtars, but a massive arm wrapped around him. The tomb-keeper Odion stood behind him, grabbing the mage in an impenetrable lock. "Miss Ishizu asked you to leave," he said, his deep voice carrying a sense of finality to his words. "You will respect her wishes."
Marthis pretended to consider this. Then he shouted once again, "RAGEKI!"
Another thunderbolt descended from the sky and struck Odion head-on, causing him to howl in agony! The massive tomb-keeper sunk to the ground, smoke rising from his body.
"Odion!" Marik yelled and raced toward his adoptive brother. "RAGEKI!" He hadn't gotten more than ten steps when another lightning bolt struck him down. Ishizu leaped to her feet. "Stop!" she cried out, a hint of fear in her eyes.
Marthis floated toward her, his expressionless mask locking with her eyes. "Take me to the Phaorah's tomb. And if you deceive me, or attempt to flee…" He raised a hand. "Hinotama." Flames swirled around his palm, and he looked in the direction of Odion and Marik. Despite the heat, Ishizu felt a chill running down her spine…
America.
The Freedom Flight Bar.
The Freedom Flight Bar, despite its impressive name, was a bar that had seen better days. Dust caked most of the top-shelf liquor. The floors and bar needed a desperate scrubbing. And most of the inhabitants would kill you rather than look at you. It was not a place Secmeton wanted to spend any time in. And yet his master Heishin had pointed him toward a man who was integral to their plans.
The man in question turned to look at the massive, blue-cloaked mage, peering at him over his dark sunglasses. "Comic-Con isn't till next year, pal. Whaddya want?"
"I come on the behalf of my master Heishin," Secmeton said. "We wish to reform the organization known as the Rare Hunters and a man of your…skills…is the right person to lead them. Conquer Domino City. Strip its Duelists of their fighting spirit. And…we guarantee you will have your vengeance on the men who took everything from you, Keith Howard."
The man in the sunglasses rose, straightening out his black leather vest. "It's Bandit Keith buddy."
Another Earth.
Avalon City.
Robert Yeager was nervous.
There he was, preparing for the biggest tournament of his life…and some freaky-ass medallion landed in his living room. He immediately took the thing to his office safe and locked it up, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. A line from the Lord of the Rings drifted into his head: "The Ring has awoken, it's heard its master's call." He couldn't help but shake his head. This is what I get for taking Cole to those movies when he was a kid.
The door slamming shook Robert out of his reverie. "Dad I'm home!" Cole called out, tossing his backpack on the couch. Robert couldn't help but notice the glum look on his son's face.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
Cole sighed. "Dad…what do you know about girls?"
Letting out a low whistle, Robert walked to the fridge and took out a beer as well as a bottle of soda. He handed the soda to Cole, taking a sip of his beer. "What happened with Hana?"
"How'd you know…?"
"Son you only know two girls and Eleanor's always been like a big sister to you. It's Hana," Robert chuckled.
"See we were at the mall, and Britney Blaze came up-"
"Hold the phone, you met Britney Blaze?!"
"Yeah. She was there when I beat Simon Kaiser. Anyway, she was flirting with me and Hana got mad and said that Britney was trying to distract me-"
"That's odd…Britney's a skilled duelist, gave me a run for my money during the Pro Circuit." Robert scratched his chin. "I think she genuinely likes you. And Hana is jealous."
"Why would Hana be jealous? If I date Britney, it's not like Hana and I won't be friends."
The Ace of Cards chuckled. "You have a lot to learn about girls, son."
Suddenly, bright blinding light erupted in the middle of the room, causing both Yeagers to drop their drinks! "What the-" Cole began to shout before the light subsided, revealing Heishin standing there. Robert's eyes immediately flew to the scepter in the wizened man's hand. A groan escaped his lips - clearly this nutcase was after the weird medallion.
As if by - well, magic - Heishin turned toward Robert. "So you do have it." He chuckled, a sinister smile spreading across his face. "Good, that'll make this easier." With the speed of thought, his scepter flicked out and a glowing gold force surrounded Cole, pinning him to the wall!
"COLE!" Robert roared. He turned to Heishin, hands balled into fists. "Let my son go or I swear to God-"
"There will be no Gods left when I've accomplished my mission, Robert Yeager. No heaven, no angels, no devils. Just me…and my newfound godhood." Heishin pointed a withered finger at the Ace of Cards. "The coin, or your son's life. I assume you have a preference?"
Robert hung his head.
"It's in my office, in the safe. I can go and get it."
"You have five minutes. And Robert? Were it my son's life on the line, I'd hurry."
Robert dashed to his office, opening his safe in record time. He plucked the Century Coin and walked over to Heishin with it. "Now let him go." Heishin waved his arm and the glowing force field surrounding Cole disappeared. As the younger Yeager fell to his feet, he heard a voice.
Cole Yeager.
"What?"
You have the spirit of a Champion.
"Champion…?"
Heishin whirled. "Champion?!" Suddenly the Coin shot out of his hands - and into Cole's. "What the devil?!" the sorcerer snarled.
Cole stared at the coin in his hand. Suddenly it began to glow with a bright golden light, which enveloped his body. "NO! NOT AGAIN!" Heishin roared, swinging his scepter around. "I'll take your soul boy-"
And time seemed to slow.
Cole watched the scepter as it swung toward him…its eye glowing a sinister gold…and his father was diving in the way. This was enough to shock him out of it. "DAD, NO!" he screamed.
Too late.
With a flash of light, Robert's body tumbled to the ground. A Duel Monsters card appeared in Heishin's hand, and a picture of Robert was visible.
Cole could only shout as he was being carried away.
Domino City.
Yugi, Joey, and Yasuke were on their way to KaibaCorp. "I'm tellin' ya, Yug, Kaiba's gonna make us do something horrible. Remember the Grand Championship?"
Then…
Yugi Muto.
"Huh?" Yugi spun around - and the Century Key flew toward him! He caught it, staring at it. "This looks like Shadi's Millennium Key…but black."
You have the spirit of a Champion.
A glow surrounded Yugi, and Joey placed a hand on his friend's shoulders. "Hang on Yugi!" Yasuke did the same.
Industrial Illusions.
"...and that's the general pitch for my Destiny Board Traveler RPG."
A boy with long white hair and a blue jacket closed his laptop as Maximillion Pegasus, the head of Industrial Illusions, clapped his hands. "Wonderful presentation, Ryou-boy! And I can definitely see a long shelf life for it!"
"Thank you sir!" Ryou Bakura replied bashfully, rubbing his head. "Me and Yugi worked for ages on it-"
Ryou Bakura.
"Hmm?" Ryou stared in his hand…and paled slightly. In it was a jet-black orb that resembled…
"My Millennium Eye!" gasped Pegasus.
You have the spirit of a Champion.
In a flash of light, Ryou was gone…
New York City.
"Glissade! Pirouette! Plie, Ms. Gardner, plie! And…break!"
Tea Gardner sunk to the floor, grateful for the break. Her senior year of high school and she had accomplished her dream…she was dancing in New York City! Well, taking dance class in New York City. And it was paying off. Her instructor praised her form, her classmates were amazing, and there was talk of giving her the lead in Swan Lake.
Only one thing was missing…
Tea pulled out her phone, opening it to a picture of Yugi and Joey. Underneath, a caption read, "Tea-congratulations on finally achieving your dream! P.S. take a bite out of the Big Apple for us!"
"You guys…" a slight smile crossed the brunette's face.
"You were amazing, Tea."
A soft voice shook Tea out of her repertoire, and she looked up to see an auburn-haired teenager standing in the doorway.
"Serenity!" She quickly got up and hugged Serenity Wheeler. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm going back to visit Joey for summer break, and I made a stop here! He told me you were dancing."
"Good ol' Joey," Tea chuckled. "It's nice to focus on dance and not the fate of the world for once."
Famous last words.
Suddenly, a jet-black necklace fell into Tea's hands, and both girls stared at it.
"Wait is that…?" Serenity asked.
Recognition dawned upon Tea. "This looks like Ishizu's Millenium Necklace!"
Tea Gardner. You have the heart of a Champion.
A flash of light and both Tea and Serenity were gone…
Another Earth.
Avalon City.
Hana and Eleanor sat at the kitchen table in the Weston residence. "So…what's the game plan?" Eleanor asked her pink-haired friend.
"I don't know!" Hana moaned, putting her face in her hands. "Oh god, I was jealous and he won't want to be my friend…"
"Take it easy," the taller girl said, placing a hand on her shoulders. "Look, you'll see him again and you'll talk it out. And if you really like him, I say make your move. But it's your choice."
Hana lifted her head. "Thanks Ellie. You always know what to say…"
Hana Hikari. You have the heart of a Champion.
A pair of black scales slammed onto the kitchen table, causing both Hana and Eleanor to jump. "What the hell?!" Eleanor exclaimed. Hana reached out, picking up the scales. "What are these…?" she said, as Eli rounded the corner.
And then in a flash of light, the trio was gone.
Kaiser Tower.
Avalon City.
Kaiser Tower. Home to the Kaiser family, the most influential people in Avalon City…and where Simon Kaiser was planning his comeback.
The dragon duelist sat in his room, flipping through a collection of cards. "So, I'll take this out…add this…and…" Finally, he sat back in his chair, satisfied. "There. The perfect deck to take down Cole Yeager."
Unbidden, his mind flashed back to his duel with Cole…
Cole placed a card into his Duel Disk. "I activate Ancient Rules! This lets me special summon one Level 5 or higher monster without sacrificing, and I'm gonna summon my own ace card! The greatest swordsman in Duel Monsters!" He slapped another card on his disk, and a new monster rose up.
It was a seven-foot-tall warrior, clad from head to toe in navy blue armor with golden accents. Strapped to its back was a massive, curved sword. Its red eyes glared at Typhon.
"Meet the BUSTER BLADER!" (Level 7/Warrior/Earth/ATK: 2600/DEF: 2300)
"The Buster Blader?!" Simon gasped. The one card that could beat me…and HE HAS IT?!
"Buster Blader's effect kicks in! Now he gets 500 extra attack points for every Dragon-type monster on your field and in the graveyard! And last I checked, you have a lot of dragons…"
"Typhon…my Assault Wyvern, Decoy Dragon, and Rare Metal Dragon…plus the Shield Wing and Dragon Knight of Creation I discarded with Card Destruction…" Simon's face was nearly as white as the streaks in his hair. "That's 3000 extra attack points!" (ATK: 2600 - ATK: 5600)
"And more than enough to wipe you out!" Cole shouted triumphantly. "Buster Blader, attack Typhon! Destruction Sword Flash!"
Buster Blader drew his sword and leapt up into the air, charging at Typhon. There was a massive white flash of light, forcing everyone to cover their eyes. Soon, the dragon hunter landed in a kneeling position. Two seconds later, Typhon's head crashed to the ground. Its body plummeted to the ground and then shattered into pieces.
"I should be angry…but…" Simon stared at his deck, and a rush of exhilaration came over him. "I've never had an opponent challenge me like that!"
Simon Kaiser. You have the heart of a Champion.
"Eh?" Simon turned, and in his lap landed a jet-black ring, with five dangling points hanging off its edge. He picked up the ring and, in a flash,…
The Dominion of the Beasts.
Yugi, Joey and Yasuke appeared in the middle of a familiar threshold.
"Check it!" Joey called out. "We're in the Dominion of the Beasts!"
Yugi smiled…and then a familiar voice caused his heart to beat faster.
"Yugi!"
He spun around, and sure enough… "Tea?!"
Tea and Serenity waved at the trio. "You know these young ladies?" Yasuke asked.
"Know 'em? That's my friend Tea…and…Serenity!" Joey ran over and hugged his sister. "What're ya doin' here, sis?"
"Ask Tea," Serenity replied. "A necklace sent us here."
"Funny, it was an eye for me."
The others turned to see Ryou Bakura, staring at the Century Eye with trepidation. "Ryou!" Yugi called out joyfully.
Hana stood up, helping Eli to his feet as Eleanor surveyed the palace. "Where are we?" she asked.
"Dunno, but they might have answers," Eleanor said, jerking her thumb toward Yugi and his friends. They started walking, but soon a dark figure descended from the heavens and landed with impressive grace.
"Where the hell am I?" Simon Kaiser asked, before turning and seeing the others. "Oh, you're Cole Yeager's friends."
"Dad…"
This caught everyone's attention. "Who is that?" Yugi said.
"Cole...?" Hana said, turning toward her friend.
Cole was kneeling, his entire body feeling numb. All he could think of was how he'd failed to protect his father…and now his dad's fate was in the hands of a madman. He tilted back his head and howled in anguish.
"DAD!"
