Part I:

"Add these two volumes to your reading schedule," Giles said as he handed two incredibly musty books to Buffy.

Taking them in her hands and almost dropping them to the floor under the weight of the ancient books. Grunting, Buffy said, "Giles, honestly, you really need to get yourself a life here."

"I have one, thank you very much. The acquisition of the Magic Box opens a new world up to me. And with your unquenching thirst for information of the slayers' origins keeps me on my toes," he said rather smugly with his voice dripping with a thick British accent.

Buffy rolled her eyes at him as soon as he turned his face away from hers so he wouldn't scold her yet again for her flippant action. "Whatever," she sighed but then suddenly remembering something she burst, "Giles, the last set of volumes you gave me was missing an addition. Don't tell me you don't have that issue?"

"Which one are you talking about?" Giles asked as a furrow began to deeply imbed itself in his forehead.

"I am thinking volume 73, 1566. It was missing from the Watcher's diaries that you gave me to read."

"Oh that one is…." Giles paused as he contemplated on what to think next. Nervously he answered "G-Gone, someone stole it a long time ago and it has never been recovered. Sorry."

Buffy noticed Giles nervous reaction to her question but she wouldn't let him know that. "Oh darn, where's a Barnes and Noble when you need one? I guess that means less homework for me, always a good thing."

"Yes good. Shouldn't you being going home soon? It's getting pretty late," Giles quickly responded.

"Why so anxious on getting me out of here?" Buffy asked while hopping down from the table that she was sitting upon. Giles just stared at her and raised his eyebrows as a sign not to ask him anymore. Getting the clue, Buffy said, "Ok fine, I didn't want to be here too much longer anyway. Can I ask you one more question before I go?"

"What is it?" Giles said with an exasperated tone to his voice.

"I know that most, well practically, all slayers come with kind of a quick expiration date, but I read some where some slayers actually got to live relatively long lives for slayers and I was curious," Buffy stumbled, "did any slayers have any family of their own?"

"Do you mean, brothers and sisters and whatnot?"

"No, did slayers ever have children?"

"NO," Giles quickly responded almost before the entire question could come out of her mouth.

Buffy noticed his abrupt answer and stepped back a little to take a good look at Giles' body language. He stood unusually erect and still. She found it really odd that as soon as he answered her question, he removed his glasses and began to abrasively clean the lenses.

"No," he answered again a little more relaxed, "I am sorry Buffy. I didn't ever want to have to tell you but slayers are sterile, they are not meant to have children."

Taking a few moments to let what he just said sink into her brain; she stood there and stared at him. She couldn't believe what he had just said. "I'm sterile?" she asked completely shocked.

"Yes, I am sorry."

Shaking her head in defeat, Buffy turned her attention from her watcher towards the floor. "Well, just chalk this one up to the fact that slayers will never have normal lives," she whispered as she felt tears beginning to brim her eyes. "I should probably get going, Mom is probably waiting for me."

"I am truly sorry, Buffy," Giles sounded sincere.

"Hey, no big. Who wants them anyway?" Buffy said while she walked through the door of the Magic Box.

Buffy walked the dark streets of Sunnydale hoping that some stupid vampire may come out so she could release some of the pain that she felt in her heart. 'I never thought that news like that could hurt so much,' she thought to herself. Her mind was plagued over this revelation and nothing seemed to get it out of her head. Not knowing anything else to do, Buffy let her tears fall with the rhythm of her broken heart.
