SupergodzillaSailorCosmos: I will eventually be using every Doctor from the revival series. Thank you for your review!
Bill could watch the Doctor work on the Tardis for an eternity. There was just something inherently fascinating about seeing him type in the correct coordinates, pull the right levers, even banging on the console with his little hammer.
"Right-o!", said the twelfth incarnation of the man known only as the Doctor, turning away from console. "So, where are we off to next? We could sail across the seas of Panflagilous-9! We could Scour through the jungles of Farfrickian-5, searching for the lost city of ultra-diamonds! Or, we could..."
As Bill chuckled at the Doctor's display of enthusiasm, a voice filtered in from the lower decks of the console room.
"Or, we could travel back to Earth, and get back to guarding the Vault, which is what we should be doing in the first place.", said Nardole, sternly, as he walked up the stairs into the console chamber.
"Oh, Nardole.", said the Doctor, his voice dripping in sarcasm. "Sweet, dear Nardole. What's the point in having a space and time machine when we're not allowed to use it."
"You didn't seem to have that point of view, before..." Nardole made a not-so-subtle head tilt to Bill.
"Oi!", said Bill.
"Sorry.", said Nardole. "But it's true! Ever since Bill came into our lives at the college, we've been slacking off on our duties to maintaining the security of the Vault."
"The Vault isn't going anywhere, Nardole.", said the Doctor, turning back to the Tardis console. "Wait, what's that?"
"Oh, don't try to change the subject.", said Nardole.
"No, really; what's that?", said the Doctor, continuing to stare at a blinking red light on the console.
Bill sat up straighter at the serious tone in the Doctor's voice, and even Nardole ceased his nagging.
Suddenly, the Tardis gave a violent pitch. The Doctor grabbed quickly onto the Tardis console, preventing him from flying off.
Bill did the same, hanging onto the railing of the staircase to the upper floors of the chamber.
Nardole had nothing to grab onto, and was quickly buffeted around the floor.
And just as quickly as they came, they stopped. The Tardis became quite still.
"What the hell was that?", said Bill, as the Doctor came up to her to check she was all right.
"I don't know.", said the Doctor, seriously, turning back to the console once he was sure Bill was unhurt.
"Nardole's all right as well.", snarked Nardole, from his position on the floor.
The Doctor immediately went to the screen on the Tardis console, and typed in some data from the keyboard.
"Oh, no, not again.", said the Doctor, once he realized what the computer was trying to tell him.
"What do you mean, again?", said Bill, properly worried now.
The Doctor began muttering to himself. Bill distinctly heard the word, 'Cybus'.
"Look, Doctor, what's happening?", said Bill.
"We're in another universe.", said the Doctor, after a long pause.
"Oh.", was all Bill had to say.
"Oh. Oh?", said the Doctor. "Do you realize what this means?"
"Well, I mean, you've probably traveled to other universes before, right?", said Bill.
"Not a lot, and when I have, we've barely managed to get back to our home universe.", explained the Doctor. "It's incredibly dangerous, traveling across the Void into another universe. I may never get you back home."
Bill gulped to herself, now that she realized what the stakes were.
"Tell you what, we could've landed on a cooler planet.", said Nardole. The Doctor and Bill both turned to see the man in question looking out of the Tardis doors, into a bright setting.
The Doctor and Bill both looked at each other momentarily; despite their dire circumstances, Bill couldn't help but be excited to step foot on her very first parallel universe.
As Nardole walked out of the Tardis doors, the Doctor and Bill followed, shielding their eyes at the intense light spewing forth from the open doors.
Nardole had been right; it was intensely hot outside. They were in what looked like a marketplace in the middle of a desert.
Standing in the middle of the street the Tardis had landed on, were multiple aliens. Some of them were human like, while others were distinctly not.
Something they all had in common was the fact that they were looking up into the sky with shock and fear.
Some of the aliens were looking at the Tardis with similar expressions, but not much had noticed the Tardis' appearance from thin air.
"What are they all looking at?", said Bill, looking up into the sky. She tried to shield her eyes against the two suns in the sky, trying to piece together what it was they were all looking at.
Nardole was the first to properly see it. "I imagine that they are looking at... that.", he pointed up at something.
Bill followed his finger, and finally saw it, as he eyes adjusted to the light.
It was a crack in space and time that perfectly bisected the sky. It ran from east to west (or, north to south; Bill wasn't exactly sure which) along the otherwise blue sky.
Bill looked to the Doctor, expecting an explanation, but the Doctor had gone into shock.
"It... It can't be.", said the Doctor, in a quivering voice. "They all closed."
They stood staring at the crack for quite some time, until the Doctor half-staggered to the first alien he could find.
"What planet is this?", said the Doctor.
"Tatooine.", came the alien's startled reply.
"And what galaxy is Tatooine in?"
The alien looked in considerable confusion at the Doctor. "The galaxy.", said the alien. "What else would there be?"
The Doctor watched as the alien walked away. "Either they haven't left their galaxy or they don't know of any other.", muttered the Doctor, half to himself and half to his companions.
The Doctor cast one last disgusted look at the crack, then marched to the Tardis. "We're leaving.", he said, simply.
A million questions invaded Nardole and Bill's mind. Just as soon as they started to ask them, a groaning sound from up above captured the three time-travelers' attention.
The crack was convulsing wildly, shifting and causing the groaning sound to occur in Tatooine's upper atmosphere.
Finally, it stopped.
"Something's come through the crack.", said the Doctor, captivated by the anomaly.
A screech from every electronic system on the planet happened right after the Doctor finished his statement. Slowly, every communications equipment came on on the planet.
"We are the Borg. Lay down your weapons and disengage your shields. This planet and every intelligent life on it will soon be part of the Collective."
End of chapter.
