Chapter Five
Remedies
Back breaking work, being a farmer might kill her Jane realized trying to break a particularly large rock. She had spent a pretty penny on an iron pickaxe but the effort was still substantial.
Clank Clank Clank.
With a crack the rock shifted.
Finally
One more strike and the rock crumbled around her. Jane sat heavily on the ground.
"Jane, are you alright." Maru said, running up the driveway. "I was coming to see if you wanted to join us at the saloon again tonight, but you don't look so good." She said, helping Jane to her feet.
"I'm alright, it's just-" she breathed heavily. "That rock took more out of me than I thought."
"When was the last time you had a check up?" Maru asked.
"Honestly, I don't remember, Doctors aren't my favorite."
"Well if you are going to be doing this much strenuous work I would go get checked out. I think the clinic is still open. I will take you there now."
Jane would have protested but she was too tired "you're right. Just to be safe." She agreed.
The two of them slowly made their way into town. Maru held the door open for Jane and she shuffled in sitting heavily onto a chair.
"Here I can take you back to the exam room." Maru said, leading Jane to the back, "let me grab the doc for you. The clinic is closed but he should be around."
Jane nodded and sat anxiously on the table.
I'm feeling better, maybe I should just leave.
She slid off the table and opened the door.
Wham!
She walked right into a wall of green. A strong hand gripped her arm tightly keeping her on her feet.
"Oh I'm sorry," she stuttered looked up at him. "Oh, Harvey, I was just… leaving." She said sidestepping Harvey.
Please don't say it please don't.
" ?" Harvey asked. "Maru said you wanted to see me?"
Jane stopped mid step, cringing. Of course the doctor is attractive.
"Yes, I was feeling tired but I feel much better now." She said quickly. She turned to leave. A sudden wave of dizziness stopping her. There was a gentle hand on her elbow
"Miss Sutton, please. At least let me check you out." He paused, swallowing quickly, cheeks turning pink. "Check you over, your vitals." He corrected quickly.
Jane wanted to leave, she studied him, his green eyes shining behind his glasses.
"Alright, I am feeling dizzy." She admitted letting Harvey lead her back into the exam room.
"Have a seat, how long have you been feeling..dizzy? You said."
"Not too long, just every now and then I can't seem to catch my breath and my arms and legs feel like jello." She said
Harvey stepped closer holding up the blood pressure cuff.
"May I?" He asked
Jane nodded, he wrapped the cuff around her arm and placed the stethoscope to her skin. The cuff tightened and she couldn't help but hold her breath.
Yoba help me, why did he have to be so handsome? She thought, watching his face. Such concentration etched in his brows. His curly brown hair combed neatly off his face.
His eyes met hers and his brows rose.
"Miss Sutton?" He said.
Did he ask me a question?
"I'm sorry did you ask something?" She said a wave of heat washing over her.
"Do you have a history of hypertension?" He asked, grabbing her wrist looking at his watch.
"Not that that I know of." She told him. "I'm just a bit nervous that's all."
"If you are feeling uncomfortable, I can get Maru." He said studying her face.
"No it's not you, I just don't like Doctors, I mean I like you, it's just doctors make me uncomfortable, your not making me uncomfortable just being here I mean that is." She stuttered
Harvey smiled, "it's all right, we call it white coat syndrome. Just being at the doctors makes you anxious."
Jane smiled slightly "Yes exactly."
"Well," Harvey said, wrapping the stethoscope around his neck again.
"You are in great health, just make sure you're drinking enough water and getting enough electrolytes. I suggest bringing some snacks with you when you're working." He helped Jane off the table. "I hope you will learn to feel comfortable coming here, and please don't overwork yourself." He finished.
They walked together to the door.
"So what should I call you Dr. Harvey? Dr.?"
He laughed, "Just Harvey is fine." He said. "And you Miss?"
"Jane. Just Jane."
"Jane, well, if you ever need anything please feel free to stop by or -" he grabbed a card off the counter. "Feel free to call, anytime."
"Thank you."
Harvey walked her to the door where Maru was waiting, she looked to the doctor then to Jane and smiled a knowing smile.
"Thanks Doc, see you tomorrow." Maru said and the two of them walked from the clinic.
"He is handsome isn't he?" Maru asked, nudging Jane's shoulder.
She smiled. "A warning would have been nice." Jane confessed.
"I saw you talking to him out side of Pierre, I thought you knew."
"He said his name was Harvey, not Dr."
Maru laughed, "You know, he is single."
Jane didn't know that. In fact she was too embarrassed by her traitorous blood pressure she hadn't thought to ask, not like she would have.
"You should ask him out! He is a little shy so I don't know if he would ask you but, I can put some feelers out if you're interested?"
Jane blushed. She just moved here days ago, and she was already being set up on a date. Why did it feel like her grandfather had a hand in this?
"Maybe" was all she said. Maru dropped the topic and they switched the subject.
Maru helped around at the farm for the rest of the day before leaving Jane to join Penny and Sam at the saloon.
Jane decided the day had been long enough and went to bed.
