A long time ago, (okay, not a LONG time ago but I'm only saying that to make it sound cool) there was a night that Mabel and I couldn't sleep. I can't remember why anymore, since we were in first grade. It could've been that we had a nightmare or a bad night or something like that.
Anyway, dad put Grunkle Stan on the phone (I had no idea who he was at the time, just that he was family) and asked him to help us go to sleep. He told us a story but I don't think it worked. I distinctly remember Mabel crying.
After a while more of doing things I don't remember, I think he was about to give up. He was quiet for a while before he finally said something. The first thing he said was "Don't tell anyone that I'm about to do this, kids."
The next thing I remember from there is that he started singing a lullaby. I don't remember any of the words, just the tune. Whatever he said, it worked. Every time we had a bad night after that, dad would put Stan on the phone and he would sing the same song every night.
I think mom tried but it didn't work. I guess it has to be Stan.
The reason I'm bringing this up is because it happened again today. Mabel and I encountered a Harpie, a very large one at that. It chased us for a while until we lost it by the shack. Mabel and I definitely did NOT want to see that thing's ugly face and we were kind of traumatized after. Stan noticed and helped us with the lullaby.
Honestly, it was nice to hear those words again. I have forgotten all of them until now. It's better than I remember. He really is a good great-uncle, whether he wants to admit it or not.
